The food was outstanding, but a couple of things: 1) they make you stand outside in the heat while you wait for your table to get ready and in the summer that's not fun. 2) they charge you a 3.99% credit card fee and think about it, who really uses cash these days? Visited the quaint town of Helen with a Christmas atmosphere. Ventured into this restaurant. Had to trek up three sets of stairs to have dinner at a table on a dance floor. Not the best seats. We ordered the grilled chicken breast with red cabbage and French fries. Chicken was ok. Also ordered the double lightly smoked pork chops. Very good!!! Served with red cabbage and mixed vegetables. Cabbage ok and the veggies were terrible!! The frozen veggies may have been sitting a while. When there is a town with many restaurants all with in walking distance, one should ensure every dish is spot on. These folks made it half way. Service was ok. Not my best review. We ate here on our 2nd night in Helen. It was about 45 minutes before closing and we were seated immediately. Our server Ethan was absolutely fantastic. Great personality, funny and attentive. The food was fantastic. Turned out to be the best food we had during our entire week long stay in Helen. We had the Schnitzel Weiner Art, cordon Bleu, spatzle, and a side sausage (didn't catch which one). Everything was absolutely fantastic. Not to mention they also had the cheapest price for a liter of draft beer of any other place we went after. Stopped here on a recommendation from a coworker. Service was lackluster, but not poor. Pretzel appetizer was overbaked. The outer part was quite hard to get through,but the flavor was good. My fried and breaded jagerschnitzel was cooked well and the texture was fine but it was quite bland. I added salt and pepper and it didn't help. Mashed potatoes were also bland. Red cabbage was good but had a lot of raisins in it. His grilled entree (I can't remember the name but it had Swiss cheese and mushrooms) was better than mine, had flavor and was cooked well. He didn't care for the potato salad becsuse it was also lacking flavor, but agreed the red cabbage was good. Got an apple strudel to go, by the time we got back home about 30 minutes later, it was as tough as shoe leather. Flavor of the apple filling was good, cinnamon dusting on it was a little much. Probably would have been better if I had eaten it fresh, but I was ready to go. Overall just a mediocre experience and wouldn't go again. I visited this cute little German place with a group of 3 on a Saturday around 4:30pm. We walked in just before the dinner rush began (around 5:00pm), and were immediately seated. Service was pretty quick for us, though our waitress was definitely in an unpleasant mood. The decor here is sweet and pleasant to look at, giving off a somewhat rustic diner vibe. If you get a table by the window, it's a great view! I would say that the food was not bad - we had their allgaeur zwiebelbratwurst, wurstsampler and schnitzel "das Heidelberg art." Each of the dishes comes with two side dishes of your choosing, which is nice. I chose karoffelsalat (German potato salad) and mixed vegetables. The Heidelberg is a recommended option for German food in Alpine Helen. Prices are reasonable, maybe even a little cheaper than comparable restaurants in the area. Great atmosphere and authentic dishes. We had the Hühnerbrust and Schnitzel "Das-Heidelberg Art." Both were excellent. Huge portions on big ol' plates. Very confusing entrance and "wait to be seated area": no hostess, no one to greet you, you are just told to stand on the stairway. Once we were greeted, we were told "over there" to go seat ourself and then another person threw 4 menus and flatware on the table without a word. Waiter was nice, but seemed new. In fact several employees do not seem knowledgeable. Severs were taking food to the tables by stacking plates on top of each other (bottom of plate was touching food on the below plate while server carried several dishes). Food came in huge portions. Pretzel was great, goulash, and potato salad were too; main dishes were bland..... meh. The Heidelberg was pretty meh . It's in an awesome location, right in the middle of Helen square but nothing really impressive besides the location and view from the balconies. The pretzel and beer cheese was pretty good-and their mustard selection was decent-- definitely the best part of our experience. The Bauernwurstteller was just ok (2 mildly smoked and grilled pork and beef sausages)-- the German potato salad and the grilled veggies lacked any flavor, kinda strange-literally zero flavor. I wouldn't mind giving them a second chance and trying the food again HOWEVER, the service was extremely slow. For this reason alone, I don't think I can return. Our very basic food took about an hour and 20 minutes to arrive and they were not very busy so I can't even imagine what rush hour would be like. I can't believe this place doesn't have all 5 star ratings! We were down from Nashville for a wedding and took the opportunity to check out the area. Absolutely lovely area and lunch at the Heidelberg House was the highlight of our visit! My husband and I have both been to Germany and this place far exceeded it in ambiance, food and service. There were 4 of us dining and all had different dishes. There wasn't one that wasn't amazing! Special shout out to Marcus our server! Attentive, friendly and funny. Not impressed, we were charged a secretive service fee after you were already rung up. Also, our server Tina was kind enough to suck on a cigarette outside the window we were dining at several times. I'm disgusted. She smelled so bad and had a sour attitude on top of that. In the middle of taking a bite the server passed the bill to my husband over my plate and in front of my face. I have never felt so disgusted while dining in an establishment in my life. The food way overly salted and my feet sat upon several dried fries from another patron. One of the few places practicing social distancing in Helen. I'd give 5 stars, but I rarely do. Food was very goid, priced better than most places in town. I had goulash, spetzel and red cabbage. Super tasty, meat was tender, a tad dry but it's in a stew so understandable. Soerzel was great, red cabbage has a taste if apples. Son had schnitzel and spetzel. He said it was good. Wife and other son are vegitarian so they were limited on choices. They shared a giant pretzel and the salmon sampler. Beer, soda, ice tea for drinks. We all shared apple strudel.
