So, it's ok. The weirdest and worst part - old hall carpets created static electricity and I got a shock every time I touched my door handle from the hallway, no matter the shoe. If no one else was around I would take my shoes off in the elevator from the lobby to avoid the shock. rooms are clean and beds are fine but don't let the pretty lobby fool you - it's not that upscale. I stayed at the The Heldrich Hotel for a conference last weekend, which is the sort of place that seems to remember a better version of itself. Two stars. It did not collapse, which felt like an appropriate baseline. The lobby tries very hard. High ceilings, a sense of occasion, the faint suggestion that important people once gathered here to discuss important things. Then you reach the room and the illusion loosens its tie. I had a corner king. It was enormous. Vast, even. You could host a small philosophy class in there, Socratic circle and all. Unfortunately, the room looked like it had already hosted several and lost all of the debates that happened there. The furniture was worn, the decor dated, and everything felt just a little too tired to argue back. In the elevator, an older gentleman joined me. He looked around, nodded once, and said, "this place sure isn't what it used to be." Then he got off. I believed him immediately. The hotel exists in a very convenient location, which is clearly its greatest strength. You can walk to restaurants, to the university, to the train station, to wherever it is you need to be. But convenience is not the same as comfort. Service feels inconsistent. Sometimes friendly, sometimes distracted, as if everyone is working from slightly different instructions. The amenities are a gamble. Some are limited, some unavailable, some simply not what you expected when you booked. There are also fees that appear with a quiet confidence, including valet parking that loudly reminds you your car now belongs to a system larger than yourself. Nothing here is terrible in isolation. That is the trick. It is all just a bit off. Slightly worn. Slightly overpriced for what you get. And so you leave with the feeling that you visited a memory rather than a hotel. I was excited to spend the night at The Heldrich before going to a show the following day. Unfortunately, that excitement quickly disappeared. First, upon entering the room, you could see this huge run/ raised carpet line from the door which would also serve as an example of how run down the rooms are. Every piece of furniture was missing large amounts of paint or was chipped. The bathroom shower had the largest hairball attached to the drain. We tried to make the best of it and proceeded to go to the restaurant/ bar at 4, only to be told it won't be able to serve food until 6:30, and then had to argue about a promotion they were running on the website that the restaurant didn't want to honor. All that being said, the hotel staff were the shining star of The Heldrich. Caroline, I think she was a manager, was friendly and welcoming upon checking us in. Carpets were worn and totally threadbare in places. The kitchen area had no utensils or plates. It was only good for making coffee. There was no bedside table on one side of the bed which meant there was no surface to put anything on and no lamp. Towels were thin and poor quality. We were looking forward to using the pool with our grandson, but the water was frigid, making it impossible to go in. The lounges had disgusting, filthy cushions. Currently staying at The Heldrich in New Brunswick, NJ, and I'm counting the hours until checkout. What was supposed to be a relaxing weekend getaway with my husband has turned into one of the most stressful hotel stays I've ever had. The surrounding area feels unsafe--panhandlers are constantly outside, and tonight a visibly intoxicated man was yelling and swearing before storming into the hotel lobby. The front desk staff (a young lady) tried to manage the situation alone, but there was no security present to assist her. It was a genuinely scary moment, and no guest should have to feel that vulnerable in a hotel lobby. Inside, things weren't much better. Despite prepaying for our stay and paying ahead of time, we were hit with a $150 security hold at check-in--no prior notice. The amenities are practically nonexistent. The king size room is small and outdated. The spa and pool were major reasons we booked this hotel, but the spa was unavailable and the pool had such a strong chemical smell of chlorine and salt that it stung my eyes. Not exactly the relaxing dip I had in mind. Noise was another issue. The guest next door had a dog that barked nonstop. I reported it, hoping for some relief, but all I got was an apology and a vague promise that security would "do their rounds." Nothing changed. Even the valet service, which costs $30 per 24 hours, was a mess. They couldn't locate our car when we needed it and took far too long to retrieve it. This hotel charges premium prices but delivers a chaotic, uncomfortable experience. I won't be returning--and I strongly urge others to reconsider before booking. Safety, rest, and basic hospitality should never be optional. read more

I went here over spring break for a last minute staycation and had an amazing time! Every person I met there was kind, personable, and helpful (at this point I am sorry to say I forgot the names I had asked for then). I was given a quiet corner room that allowed me to relax. The room was clean and spacious with a very comfortable bed. There was a restaurant and a spa that I did not get to use as I got very busy reading the books I brought but will absolutely use next time as they would have only enhanced my experience. I did go to the buffet for breakfast and it was delicious with lots of choices! I also loved the location which was very walkable to public transportation with lots of food options and entertainment options. I will absolutely stay there again for my next staycation! This hotel is not worth the money . This was my first and last time staying here. Somehow I didn't noticed when booking that This hotel has no parking. Its in the heart of downtown New Brunswick wirh metered parking and parking garages that are very costly per night. When we first got to the hotel and learned that there was no parking my husband proceeded to cancel our booking . He was told that we couldn't cancel because we used booking.com . My husband said you got to be kidding me with disbelief and because he made that remark the lady at the front desk called the police. The police came for no reason and did absolutely nothing because there was no reason for her to call the police in the first place She clearly overreacted. What a way to welcome your hotel guests.. That put a damper on our stay and was a huge turn off. There are no microwaves in the rooms or anywhere in the hotel . We were told that one could be brought to our room for $25 a day. I never stayed at a hotel that didn't have a microwave in the hotel room and a 4 star hotel at that. We were very disappointed. We stayed for 2 nights and both nights we were only provided with one wash cloth yet we are a party of two. They provided mini trial size bars of soap , lotion, shampoo and conditioner but no toothpaste. The size was only big enough for one person to use. We had a very disappointing experience at The Heldrich. We arrived late around 11pm, and there was no valet service available. At check-in, the gentleman helping us (Ronaldo) was not welcoming and gave us a very cold response when we requested to have rooms closer together for our family of six (my husband, mother-in-law, and three children). Instead, we were placed very far apart. When we got to the rooms, they were dusty, and my mother-in-law's shower water was scalding hot with no way to regulate the temperature. In our room, the refrigerator still had old, moldy food left behind, which was very concerning. We called the front desk, and they sent someone up (Rafael) to address it. However, when he arrived, he didn't even know why he was there. I had to explain about the food in the refrigerator, and his response was, "What do you want me to do?" The lack of professionalism was extremely frustrating!!! Later, we asked about switching rooms, but the same night staff member said we could, though the rooms would be even farther apart. At that point it was nearly midnight, and with three tired kids, we decided to stay put. The next morning, my husband spoke with another staff member (Rosalyn, I believe), who was much more professional and understanding. She apologized, moved us to better/cleaner rooms right across from each other, and provided breakfast vouchers, which we appreciated. That said, the overall experience was still negative. The hallways smelled and felt dirty, the rooms were dusty, and the property seemed poorly maintained. While one staff member tried to make things right, the issues and lack of professionalism from others were too many for us to consider staying here again. read more

My wife and I have been here almost a week. A few days, I reached out early to get our room made up early, and they complied. But on Friday, I didn't. We left the room at 10:30, came back six hours later, only to find our room hadn't been made up; we were told the cleaning staff had left. Well, they found someone, who did clean our room, so not terrible, but it did get in the way of us getting ready for going out that evening. Today, Sunday, we left at 10 AM; back at 8:30 PM (i.e., 10 1/2 hours later) and our room WAS NOT MADE UP! When we called, we found out there was no one who could make the room up. I asked to speak w/a manager, but Carolyn apparently didn't feel it necessary to call me. Oh, well; that would have been an inconvenience, I guess. Truly memorable. The next day we go to check out the pool area. No hot tub. They say the pool is heated yet it was freezing. Trash left in the hallway for multiple hours. And as you can see by the pictures this read mold and peeling paint in the bathroom. It is tough to review this place because it has a beautiful exterior and is in a great location. The staff is friendly and is has the potential to be a top hotel, but just kind of misses. As a start, the hotel seems to be going through some renovations. Our room was complete, but it was odd. This had two beds, but they were not equivalent--one was a little smaller and lower. Then one major problem was that the door would not close on its own--when you left, you needed to pull it closed (which has huge security concerns). We had family staying at other rooms and one of their rooms also had problems with the door. Then the room had some odd issues also. For example, the alarm went off at an odd time and the bathroom did not have a fan. With all this being said, I would consider staying here again--but hope they pay attention to detail (particularly if they want to charge like a top hotel). read more

I asked to purchase a water bottle in the lobby and the lady rolled her eyes and told me the hotel had no water anywhere but I was welcome to walk outside and get whatever else it was I needed. However 10 minutes later someone else asked for water and was given 2 bottles for free. Also none of the locks on the doors work for the rooms. We had to ask for 3 keys in two days. Hotel needs major upgrade! Hasn't been touched in 17 years. Unlike most hotels there was no smart TV in the too so we could not watch our Netflix and we're at the mercy of basic cable. Not one premium channel. For the money, that is not acceptable. Then there was the in-stop parties next door. New Jersey fire code only allows for a 4 person maximum in a hotel room that judging by the loud voices next store, there was little to know walking room in that room. Friday/Sunday at 1 am back from the club the noise started, and again all afternoon Saturday and again at 1:00 am Sunday. We called downstairs to the desk at 1:00 am, 1:15 am and 1:45 am. They finally sent security to break it up at 1:45. The girl at the desk's response was almost what do you want me to do about it, or that she could not believe us was complaining. read more

The hotel is next to the New Brunswick Arts Center and in close proximity to areas of interest both in New Brunswick but also Highland Park. Nice lobby and rooms are decent but it looks like the hotel could use an update as it is showing age with chairs in the lobby that are stained and interior that's needing paint and TLC. Breakfast was ok, nothing to blow you away. Eggs, potatoes and the like. Parking is a little challenging and pricy but it's not NYC prices. Warning: weekends brings a character of drunkenness and other things and you might need to call security to break up 3am hotel room parties with loud music. The hotel responded well to it. They're not the cause but it seemed to be a problem at this hotel a few times. read more

I spoke to the manager, Amr Maged about some concerns I had concerning parking, he giggled at me and said they don't have parking, that's another company, but they reside in the hotel lobby. Then he turned around and walked away when I said I didn't find it funny. This is obviously a scam! I am sooooo disappointed! That said, the valet team are nice guys and this review is not their fault! Why would a manager giggle at someone then walk away? Stayed for one night. It was raining hard and there was no valet on duty so we parked at the nearby municipal lot ($20) and got soaked walking back. The lobby was nice but they were understaffed. We got to our floor and there was a sopping wet towel on the floor that had been moved to a decorative table by the next morning. The room was clean but very tired- everything needs a new coat of paint and the dust above eye level was epic. The beds were pretty uncomfortable- ours sloped from the edge to the middle- and the pillows are filled with shredded stuff but some people probably like that. This is based off the experience I had when coming here for a residency interview a few years back, so one would hope that things have changed, but long story short, the program I was interviewing at was nice enough to book a hotel for me since I was coming in from out of state. I got there at around 11:30 pm (was chasing down a connecting flight after initial flight was delayed) to find out that they'd given my room away, and had "run out of all their other rooms." Dafuq? On a random weekday nowhere close to any holiday, your entire hotel is just completely booked full even though I had a room that was reserved and paid for? They did eventually managed to find me a room in a neighboring town, East Brunswick, if I recall correctly... At 2:30 AM. (Might I mention that my interview was at seven in the morning...) And I still had to pay for parking. Said program ended up being my first choice and I ended up matching there, so happy ending overall, but still super disappointed in this place as a hotel. I have since been back though (early last year) for a conference that included a catered buffet and the food was delicious/service was great, hence the stars above! read more

The Heldrich is a nice hotel and we had no problems during our stay. I would think though that they could provide free water or better toiletries such as a shower cap for the price they charge but it was pretty bare bones in that respect. We didn't have a great view, we were looking down on the roof of the building next door, but the staff claimed no other room was available. Other than that, no complaints. read more

I was here for a banquet in November. I reported the mold when I found it which was right after I took my shower. The room was clean but because of it still being a pandemic I also brought my own cleaning and sanitizing supplies. I cleaned the tub, toilet seat and sink just to be extra cautious. So when I happened to notice the mold I called right away. They said they would send up an engineer. After the banquet the mold was still there and it didn't seem as if it had been treated. I spoke to the front desk and they offered to comp my room. I have called daily and their phones were down and it's been 4 weeks and still I have been charged and no one returns my calls. I would never stay there ever again because their lack of customer service. I don't expect a hotel to be perfect but I do expect that when someone says they are going to do something it is executed. I'm reading others reviews that so far from the truth it's appalling!!!!! The front desk was wonderful. I had major surgery and was staying there to relax for a couple days being I live an hour away. The room service was done for the night when I got there after my surgery and the front desk had my mom and I order and they personally brought it u so I could get in bed and relax. They didn't charge us for our food nothing not even the vending machine. The parking was a little pricey but that's a different company. My room was clean and beautiful!!!! Instantly impressed with the Heldrich as we pulled up, and even more impressed as I stepped inside. Seriously, with a name like the Heldrich, and a nice place to back it up, this place felt regal! We stayed in #839. Room looked looked and felt nice and clean. The bed was comfortable. Bathroom looked new and clean especially the bathtub. If you don't want to do valet parking, there is cheaper public parking on the next block. For the price, the room was great, and the location was even better. I really hate the incandescent bulbs though...so yester-year. My only other complaint is the "pet-friendly hotel" part. Visible chew marks on the chair and the occasional whiff of subtle pet odor really just diminishes the quality and overall experience of the room. Perhaps limiting the pets to only certain rooms would help, then make sure all guests are aware whether they have a pet-free or pet-friendly room. The next time we are in town, we'll definitely try and stay here again. read more

Today, I unfortunately had to get a refund as the room I was given was incredibly dusty, there were grease stains on the headboard, scratches all over the furniture, marks all over the walls and what appeared to be makeup on the door post of the bathroom. It's so disappointing as now I have to find somewhere else to stay on short notice and I was told the rooms are cleaned every day. Even after I showed the front desk attendant the photos I'd taken she was curt with me. And I know for a fact that the businessmen who come into and out of New Brunswick would never be treated that way or expected to be ok with a subpar room. It's so unfortunate. read more

This was the worst hotel experience I've ever had. I called for a week before my stay trying to get an early check in, no one could give me a straight answer and kept telling me to call back. The date of our stay the entire computer systems were down!! We could not check in at all! We were getting married at 4pm, they wouldn't even allow me a hospitality room to change. This is a nice hotel with plenty of amenities and I would stay here again, but... Location - it's prime in this hometown of Rutgers U. and Johnson & Johnson. Just a short walk from this property are plenty of fine restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. Staff - Friendly and helpful at all times. Very responsive. The room - It's well appointed, with a comfortable bed and excellent work area ... but no mini fridge. This is huge for so many people who travel with medications (or bring a couple of leftover slices back from a great pizza joint). It's standard even in budget hotels these days (and The Heldrich is hardly a budget hotel.) It should be standard here too, along with a microwave. -- Not a deal breaker but the absence of these inexpensive additions takes points off the board. Miscellany - As I said, the staff is very responsive. That's a good thing, except my extra pillows were delivered to the room by a polite man who had apparently been working on something mechanical just prior. The pillows reeked of motor oil or some sort of solvent. Couldn't use them. ~ During my first 24 hours here, only one of the three elevators was operating. Why? ~ The breakfast at Christopher's is outstanding. Bottom line - A nice hotel. Though it's prices are on par with The Omni or Hilton, it's just a little lacking in the amenities. If refrigerators and microwaves were standard here, I'd give four stars. read more
