People around town will say that Hickory Hog is a lot better than Woodchuck Grill. I have to respectfully disagree. The food certainly wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special. Pros: great wait staff, clean establishment, large menu without being too excessive. Cons: Food could have better flavor. The sides don't have that "homemade" feel. Fair prices. I'm not even sure where to begin so we'll just cut right to the chase. What The Hickory Hog calls barbecue is not barbecue. Actual barbecue is smoked slowly at low temperature over wood. When it's done right, it needs no sauce. Barbecue sauce should be used only to compliment the flavor of the meat created through seasoning and the smoking process. The meat at the Hickory Hog is covered in so much sauce that there is honestly no way to tell if the meat was actually smoked, but my suspicion is that it was not. If it was, they wasted their time by drowning it in the sauce. I ordered pulled pork and brisket and it was all slopped together. I couldn't tell you which was better because they tasted exactly the same. Brisket and pork shouldn't taste the same. They really shouldn't even be seasoned the same. This was kind of like eating a barbecue flavored stew. Bottom line, as barbecue, this is bad. Like really, really bad. As some kind of stew, I guess it tasted okay. Honestly I'm shocked this is still served and accepted as actual barbecue. With the number of cooking shows, many of which feature barbecue and the popularity of backyard smokers like the Big Green Egg and various pellet smokers, it seems unbelievable. In recent years I've felt that regional food superiority was shrinking. I've had really good pizza in Atlanta and a top notch lobster roll in SW Florida, but if this is 4+ Star barbecue in New Jersey, the south is still dominating the barbecue game. read more

I really don't know what happened to this place. As you can see from my previous review I absolutely loved this place. The past few times there have been problems with the food. This time the service was poor as well. We ordered macaroni and cheese bites which are usually delicious. It seems as if the waitress Debbie didn't feel like working this particular day. She instead brings broccoli bites instead. I asked them to remove them from the bill and you think I was asking them to make the blind see. The popcorn firecracker aioli shrimp were delicious. Had a hard time ordering those with Debbie also as she didn't know they came with a firecracker aioli sauce and insisted we had to choose Cajun or buffalo also. The chef then sent her out to ask which one we wanted and we got that fixed. We had 2 orders of the steak tips which were over cooked and chewy. We didn't want to seem like we were trying to break the staffs shoes so we just figured we would finish. My wife then went up to get the bill worked out as they only took off $4 instead of the $6.99 for the broccoli bites. They explained because we "ate" them we have to partially pay for them. Also the Hickory Hog with the red hair behind the counter rolled her eyes at my wife when asking to use the $1 coupon we have because we come to this place CONSTANTLY. Because of the consistent lack of cleanliness (there was BBQ sauce splattered on the wall next to where we were sitting at eye level), greasy tables, greasy disgusting silverware (I bring my own from home) and dirty floors I will not be returning to the hickory hog. I certainly will not give my money to a restaurant that has such a rude employee rolling their eyes at a longtime customer. Woodchucks right down the road is much better IMO. read more

Some of the best BBQ you will find anywhere..never mind the Jersey Shore. Pulled Pork rocks ...Brisket is killer... And the RIBS...THE RIBS ARE HANDS DOWN SOME IF THE BEST YOU WILL EVER HAVE! Real deal smoked for hours then grilled ribs. There is no substitution for smoking. All rib cuts and sauces (they have several) are terrific but the baby back dry rub ribs will leave you speechless! They have a dish that may sound weird but is crazy good...Blackened chicken in a cajun basil cream sauce. You owe it to yourself to try this dish! Great food! Went here with a group of friends and my little sister. Food tasted fine but a few bites in, my sister noticed a MAGGOT on her burger. When we notified the waitress, she tried to tell us it was a piece of broccoli!!!!! Usually, go to Woodchucks down the street but wanted to be fair and give Hickory Hog a shot. Got Memphis Dry Rub Ribs, Pulled Chicken and Steak Tips along with Mac and Cheese, Beans and Mashed Potatoes. Compared to Woodchuck's, Hickory Hog doesn't even come close. Unfortunately, every item was bland and of low quality. I'm hoping it was just because we are in a tough time and they had to make concessions. I feel bad even writing this but I was/am still very dissapointed. I would not recommend this place when there is a much better BBQ place down the road. read more

The ribs were tough and dried out as well as the rest of the food being very inappropriate. The corn bread was out of a plastic wrapper and not baked on the premises. The decor was very glum which should have set the stage for the food. Why we stayed there - I don't know. The price was not worth the restaurant price that they charge. An old friend, Terri and I went by there today to use up the groupon coupon. We both had never been there...I wasn't expecting a wow factor...what a BIG surprise as the baby back ribs we both had was out of this world! Hadn't had this wonderful taste in a long time since I came back from Texas over 15 yrs ago. Baby back ribs had plenty of meat and ohh so flavorful, delicious and guess what, it's fresh!! (I can't stand a day old flavor like I've experienced it, yuck!!) You gotta order a bunch for superbowl parties, everyone will definitely rave about it! We both also had a side of sweet potato fries, equally good!! Place is clean, the server was friendly and helpful. Met the owners, very sweet couple. Found this place on Yelp when we came to Point Pleasant for a day trip and wanted to grab some lunch. It's less than a 10-minute drive from the boardwalk. The baby back ribs were good. Chopped brisket was ok, but I was expecting sliced brisket. Plus all the meat was completely covered in sauce ... the sauce wasn't bad but I would've liked a little less. Last night my husband and I went to Hickory Hog for the first time. When we got there there were three women at the registers all looking down and not caring who walked in the door. We stood there for quite a while when finally I asked someone if we could get a table, they said sit over there. We sat, and we sat, and we sat, and we sat, and not once did anyone ever come over to us and say someone would be with us shortly, sorry for the delay, nothing like that. The place was very quiet. There were a lot of people just sitting and waiting and no one was tending to the tables and no one was doing anything about making the customers somewhat happy by at least acknowledging them. We could see that the service was going to be horrible so we decided to leave. On the way out, my husband said to one of the girls at the register, no one seemed to care if we were there or not so we're leaving and she just looked at him, did not say a word. I have never had en experience like this! We owned restaurants for 25 years and never, ever would we ever treat customers like this no matter how busy we were! So we went to Woodchuck's who greeted us with a smile, they had nice lively music playing (no music at H.H. and the atmosphere was glum!) and we felt welcomed there. Went there recently. Called the place. I asked the young lady if I needed a reservation for 2. She said not necessary, just come in. Drove 15 minutes to do a review. When we got there it was mayhem (reminded me of the Allstate Auto Commercial), and it wasn't even really that busy. Actually, it was quite funny at first. Yelling, screaming, heads bobbing. Pretty hilarious. Waited for 10 minutes until we said to someone, "can we be seated ?". "Over there or anywhere" was the response. Okay then...... Waited another 15 minutes. No one came over. Again, looked like a circus, a lot of clowns, but no one orchestrating the circus. (Youtube to follow). Got up and left. Didn't know that the circus came to town.
