I REALLY wanted to like this place. Our waitress, Morgan was the nicest server I've ever had. She was so nice to talk to and tried her very best to accommodate our meals. So one star for good service. The food however, was terrible. We asked for the steak medium and it came back dry and well done. Everything was either way too salty or too sweet! We ordered the steak and shrimp and assuming that the shrimp was grilled, since the way it was specified on the menu made it sound like it was, it came back fried. There needs to be major changes to the menu because it doesn't even tell you what you're ordering! We sent it back and asked for a piece of grilled chicken instead. It was pretty rubbery and way undercooked, almost had a texture of it being boiled. And super salty. The only thing I liked was the macaroni and cheese. We felt so bad and didn't want to complain or send anything else back! Waitresses already have a hard enough job and it wasn't her fault. Most of their food just tastes like it came pre packaged. I really didn't want to give this place a bad review because the people there are so nice, but the food was just awful :(( unfortunately we won't be coming back and will be going to Texas Roadhouse instead lol. read more

We found The Hickory on our way through town early on a weeknight. We ordered a fried pickles, half Cobb Salad which was plenty big enough for my wife, and the Green Chile Hamburger. The pickles as an appetizer were great, served with jalepeno flavored and regular ranch dressing. My first bite of the hamburger brought a huge grin to my face. This is a freshly made patty! Juicy. Full of flavor. I didn't even add condiments. My wife's salad was beautifully prepared, crisp and fresh, with a citrusy surprise. The service was competent and only a bit slow. We didn't even order their BBQ and were still impressed. We'll come back if given the opportunity. read more

This is the most inconsistent BBQ place I have ever been to. The first time I went it was great but the next three times I was so disappointed. I ordered fries and all of them were just the tips, as in less than 1/2 inch long. the meat has been very dry the last three times and just disappointing. I might be a little hard on them but I do BBQ competitions and they would not place let alone win with the meat I have had as of late. I was seriously disappointed with the service. We were seated and forgotten about for nearly 20 minutes while other people who came in after we did were promptly taken care of. And after our server finally did find time to come do their job they made it seem like they were doing us a favor by being there. The food was underwhelming and overlooked in my opinion. I have eaten here mutiple times. The atmosphere is good, and the servers are friendly. The food is good but I would not give it five stars the chicken was kind of dried out and the ribs usually always taste good. I think it depends on the day sometimes on how your food is going to turn out. My wife said the salad she had was good as well. I loved the Hickory a few years back. Not anymore. I went to the new location. The remodel is beautiful! Very nice looking restaurant when you first walk in and get a table. The restrooms are gross though. Not new at all. They look like employee bathrooms when that clothing store was there. There is also only 1 stall for males and 1 stall for females. So for my food I ordered a quarter pounder and fries. My husband got brisket with corn and mashed potatoes. My food came on a plate/bowl that looked like it was for dogs or prisoners. That is seriously what it looks like! My fries were so soggy and hardly any on my plate. My burger patty was the size of 2 quarters put together. That was a complete joke. My husbands corn tasted bad, not much meat on the brisket, and his biscuit had no taste. His mashed potatoes were good. I gave this place a chance at the new location after not liking their food quality for the past 2 years. Nothing has changed. I really can't recommend this place. What a let down:( read more

The food was average quality. We tried their lemonade which was just water and sugar. The whole combination super sweet drink with the steak and burger was weird. Their drink menu is very limited since this town does not serve alcoholic beverages at all. Almost 95% of population are Mormons so it is absolutely impossible to find a place with a beer to have a dinner. The official information is that alcohol is prohibited on Sunday but the thruth is they do not have it in any restaurant at all. There is only one place that sells beer and liquor - chevron gas station (except Sundays). This town specializes in Soda, they serve only super sweet soda to every food in every restaurants. read more

Been here several times now. Food is decent, prices are fair, but the service is horrendously awful. Like so seriously bad its ridiculous. Even if the food was the worlds best, I still don't know if it would be enough to make up for how bad the service is. Our food took forever, and it was lukewarm like it had been sitting. People may be nice there, but my wife and I on our most recent date a few days ago had about the worst customer service we've ever had anywhere. We had asked for a water for my wife which she didn't receive until we asked for it a second time once our food came. Our waiter finally brought it out at the end of our meal. Not to mention that we were waiting almost a full hour for our food. We had also asked for a side of ranch. We asked our waiter a second time for it after he hadn't brought it with our food. We waited, and still a no go. We finally got up to go ask someone else for it. He comes back a third time after that and asks "oh did you still want that ranch?" Seriously? We asked a different waiter at the end of our meal to speak to a manager and kindly express frustration about the service. If it had been one small thing, I get it, a restaurant can be busy. But we had to ask multiple times for several things, and had to get up to go ask someone else for items as well. We were told the manager was coming, and after waiting around 20 minutes, asked a second time. We finally got up to go find him, we just wanted to leave. While friendly, all we got was a "I'm sorry, give us a try another time". Thanks for a crappy date night I guess. If you've got time to waste, the hickory is not going to be your worst choice. We will not be returning though. Every time I've been there, its the same story, asking for things multiple times and long waits. read more

Yummy food, but be prepared to wait. Their customer service is really slow. Also, we have been twice when they ran out of baked potatoes (and we live in Idaho, land of potatoes). 2-3 years ago I loved the hickory, it was one of my favorite places to eat truely, and I have lost of options (being from Philadelphia) however as of recent, the last year, year and a half, the hickory as been sub par at best, I heard a new owner took over and that would explain the many "cut corners" it has seemed they chose to change many menus items. The service was really good, however the bbq is mediocre at best. The brisket was insanely dry, the ribs were just "eh", and they were out of smoked turkey. I spent over $50 on Valentine's Day for my wife and I and we both left feeling like we should have just gone to Blisters (the other bbq joint in town). Which would have saved us probably $30. Went there with some friends for the first time with my wife. Seriously delicious food. Get the sweet potato fries with the honey butter sauce. My wife got the burger, and I got the steak. I do think that it's on a little bit of the pricey range- the same that you'd get at a higher quality restaurant, and I don't think that it's quite on the same level as a higher quality place. Context for this review: I'd never been before and was really excited to try it. My fiancé has been before and said it was decent BBQ. My fiancé and I went and got stuck at a seriously tiny table for 2 in the middle of a walkway for employees out of the kitchen. I ordered pulled pork and brisket and added a bun. My fiancé got pulled pork with an added bun as well. I also ordered a side salad. My side salad came in the tiniest little bowl and ranch dressing on the side. If you've ever had a salad you know that your dressing needs to be mixed into the lettuce and if your bowl is minuscule the lettuce goes everywhere. So that was a disaster. Then we got our food a little while later and mine didn't come with a bun but my fiance's did even though we both ordered one. I didn't realize until the guy who dropped off the food had gone away. My waitress did not come to check on us or anything until the end of our meal. Tried to get another employee's attention and couldn't. My fiancé was finished eating and I was still waiting on the bun to eat the pulled pork by the time someone came by. Finally I asked for my bun I had ordered and I was brought this frozen cold pieces of bread. My fiancé had a nice toasted bun you'd expect to be served. I was so mad!! My waitress finally came by and I honestly told her to feel the bun and said I wasn't going to pay for that because why would I? I didn't even get a bite out of it. So she just took it off the bill. As for the taste of the pulled pork and brisket, the pulled pork was nothing special at all and I took one bite of the brisket and was done. I didn't even bother with getting a to go box. Don't go into The Hickory expecting real BBQ, it won't meet your expectations. I have been in a handful of times hoping that they would change my mind but alas, no. I will say that their baked potatoes are great, but if you get the potato bomb the plate is covered in grease. It's disgusting. The service is usually friendly but my server seemed clueless. I asked a few questions about pricing and food preparation (allergy related) and they not only didn't know the answers, but were very unhelpful in inquiring the info needed. Overall, I would say the food isn't worth coming back for and it wasn't the "hidden gem of Rexburg" that I have been hearing about. read more

My husband and I usually have a great experience whenever we go here but the last time we went we're were very disappointed. The brisket was tasteless and the smoked turkey wasn't very smoky. Also they messed up my order and then when they brought the correct items, my biscuit had hairs on it. :/ Everything else was great! The wait time to even order drinks let alone food was crazy. They really weren't that busy either as we went in shortly after 5pm. The food took forever and most of us just had pulled pork sandwiches or salads. The food itself was average in my opinion as the pulled pork was fairly dry and flavorless. The spicy bbq sauce they have on the table was quite tasty though. Even if the food were great, I still would avoid this place due to the service issues. Please don't go here thinking this is real BBQ. It's not. Barely smoked food. The ribs appear to have been wrapped in order to speed up the cooking. Most of the orders we had the food was dry. I was not impressed with the service or food. We had to wait to be seated for over 10 mins even though half the restaurant was empty. Plus the waiters were slow and just didn't care. Someone knocked over a bucket of tooth pickets all over the front waiting area and we watched ever worker walk by and glance it without doing a thing.
