I recently boarded my French bulldog named Mini with The Highland Dog. We had such a phenomenal experience! The staff is so nice and accommodating. It's obvious they really truly care about our pets. Dakota and Patrick were amazing!!! While out of town, I did not worry one bit. In fact, I feel like Mini kind of had a little vacation of her own having a blast with everyone there! As an overly protective dog mom, I've always struggled with finding the right boarding facility. Hands down, this is the best place! They are so caring, kind, and totally focused on the dogs. What really blows me away is that they welcome and encourage you to send beds, toys, and treats to make their stay a little easier. The first time we boarded, my pups didn't eat much. The second time, I wanted to try a different approach and provided bowls for their food and water and it went better! The fact that I could do that tells you everything you need to know about this place. They genuinely care about creating a happy experience for the dogs. They have great outdoor space for potty breaks and play time. And they take lots of pictures every day so you can see your little ones. The rooms are spacious and quiet since they are upstairs. We dropped our sweet Belle off for an overnight stay. I was nervous but the folks over at Highland Dog were reassuring. The next morning, we had a family emergency in Kansas and had to extend Belle's stay by 4 nights! I was stressed about the family issues and stressed the Highland Dog wouldn't be able to accommodate my last minute extension. Not only were they able to extend, they were so understanding! The Highland Dog is my favorite small business in Louisville! I adopted my dog from the humane society and was worried about leaving her for the first time due to her being abandoned in the past. I toured some cheaper dog boarding places in the area, and they just didn't ease my anxieties. I ended up calling The Highland Dog on the recommendation of a friend. They eased my anxiety immediately! Even though some people may consider it pricey, it is worth every penny to know your dog will get plenty of attention and love while you are away. Had an amazing experience with The Highland Dog! I searched in Louisville for dog daycare, to have a little break from the dogs for my mother and I to enjoy the city pup free, & calling around other businesses, my mom & I felt more at home & comfortable with choosing The Highland Dog. Judy the owner called me to follow up on a few requests I had, and she informed us that wouldn't be a problem at all to accommodate the dogs according to their needs! Without her even saying it, I already knew they would be in great hands because of her understanding & caring nature. Initially when I called & spoke with Sharon, she was so informative on the pricing, the shot records being a must, & hour of operation to bring the dogs! Made it a breeze to do business with them. Was able to print out the application & get the shot records sent over prior to arriving! So when we brought the dogs Raven was so kind while asking a few simple questions about the dogs & took no more than a few minutes to do the transition & they were gone already in great caring hands & having a good time with the other dogs at the daycare! Doggie daycare is more like a summer camp for them! They get to be away from home, hang out with new pals, be supervised, and have some freedom that they don't have at home! Makes us happy as pet owners to see our dogs happy and excited for something new! Very satisfied with our experience & can't wait to bring the dogs back here again when we're in town!! read more

We left our newly adopted rescue with Highland Dog during a recent trip out of town. The Highland dog folks took the very best care of her! Our dog had a great time playing with the other dogs, going into the pool, etc. The staff responded to our emails and posted photos daily on the public facebook so we could see her enjoying herself. The Highland Dog is the ONLY place we will 'board' Crimson, my husband's Great Dane service dog. In May, we went to Ohio to visit friends and taking Crimson was not the best option. I found Highland Dog on YELP even though there were not yet any written reviews. I checked out their Facebook page and website (http://www.thehighlanddog.com/) and met with the co-owners for a tour and 'meet-n-greet'. I was incredibly impressed by Kelly, her team and 'hotel' set upl! The Highland Dog 'interviewed' Crimson and us for behaviors they should be aware of, her routine, etc. Being a service dog, Crimson is not used to be away from my husband so we were concerned as to how she would behave away from us, but the transition and time away was seamless. Crimson's 'hotel' room was no joke - she had a lot of space to move around and was placed next to a dog she met (and played with for about 45 minutes) during the 'meet-n-greet'. Kelly and 'The Highland Dog' sent daily text messages and FB updates which made us feel so much better! They also offer a MILITARY discount which go a long way in armed forces community! We have quite a loyalty to businesses that offer such a discount (as if we weren't already committed to 'THD'). I recommend The Highland Dog to all my 'dog' friends, family and co-workers. PROS: TOP 10 (no particular order) 1. CLEAN, GREAT smelling 'hotel' set up 2. Daily TEXTS updates and FB photos 3. Thorough interview/meet-n-greet process (including the tour and ensuring their 'residents' met the health standards) 4. MILITARY discounts :) 5. Very accommodating to last minute arrangements and changes, 'pet parent' concerns, pet needs, et al. 6. PASSION The 'THD' team clearly love what they do & do it well!! 7. This past weekend was our dog's first stay at The Highland Dog, but I am sure that it won't be her last. Because my parents have lived nearby for the whole 14 months we have had the dog, we had never boarded her. She is a border collie mix and is full of energy, so I wanted to make sure I took her somewhere where she could play. We dropped her off on Saturday around noon on the way out of town. After filling out paperwork and leaving her vaccine records, bed, food, treats, and bone, we took a brief tour of the place. Facilities: Every dog has a room-sized space with a bed to call their own. There is a lot of space to run and play both inside and outside the house. The entire basement is just a big running play area for inclement weather. I was excited to see that Macey getting to play did not necessarily mean I would need to bathe her the next day. Shortly after hitting the road, my wife quickly noticed recent facebook pictures of Macey running and playing with another dog of similar size and temperament--fast friends! The next morning on our way back to Louisville, we called THD to let them know exactly when we would be arriving. Once we arrived, Macey was downstairs; packed and ready to go. She was excited to see us and the staff really seemed to have enjoyed having her around. Once we got home, Macey (a dog that runs 30+ miles a week) was exhausted from all of her playing and just a little bit out of routine. It seemed like she REALLY wanted another play break with another dog, but she only found our surly cat. Until we get another dog, THD might just be the best, cleanest playtime she can get. We attended the Kentucky Derby this year (2018) and stayed near the event in our motorhome. We went on several tours over the course of nine days and could not leave our dogs in the RV unattended for 8+ hours. I contacted The Highland Dog and reserved a room for my two dogs, Buster (old and difficult) and Ozzy (nice, young, sweet dog). Their private room (because Buster is difficult) was on the 3rd floor. I was concerned about them getting to go to the bathroom, the steps since Buster is old, etc. Sara said she lived on the premises and from sun-up thru bedtime, she would take them out to the private area of the backyard every two hours and also would carry Buster up and down the stairs. When I checked them in, I told Sara I was paying for their room for 9 days, but if we had a free day I would pick them up and leave their crates in their room until their return. This worked out great! When we checked out on our final day in Louisville, Sara actually wanted to refund my money for the days my dogs didn't occupy their room! This was a very nice gesture, but I declined. It would not be right as they couldn't resell the room because of our two crates and belongings inside. Sara was the BEST! She really took special care of Buster and he was in a great mood when I picked him up. He doesn't board well and usually ends up at the vet getting rehydrated etc after boarding for a very hefty price! Not so, this time! He was happy, ate well, loved Sara, wagged his tail... it was amazing! I also know she picked him up and carried him up and down the stairs, because she laughed while commenting how Buster tries to help you pick him up- he hops as you try to lift him. Buster also usually stops eating while being boarded- he likes an audience. In other words, you have to watch him eat. If you don't, he stops. I know Sara took the time to watch him eat too- as his weight did not drop. Sara texted me every evening and gave me an update on the dogs. She also asked if she could give them treats of Animal Crackers during their stay. The special care and attention The Highland Dog gave Buster and Ozzy was absolutely amazing! If I could give The Highland Dog 10 stars, I would. I am not one to usually write reviews, but I feel it's the least I can do for this absolutely amazing local Louisville business. My family has been boarding our two dogs with THD for 8 years now (for at least 2-3 times per year). When we first boarded with them, our dogs were 5 and 4. Now, they are true senior citizens at the ripe ages of 13.5 and 12. Whenever we boarded with them, no matter the length of time, our dogs would return to us so happy! One of my favorite things about THD is their Facebook page where they post pictures of all the dogs having fun each day. Because our dogs are part of the family, we really love this feature. But our most recent experience is what has brought me to write this review. My family recently went on a vacation to Michigan. While we were away, my oldest dog Harry (13.5 years old) experienced some serious health issues (restricted air flow and enlarged heart) due to his age and prior anxiety issues. And if not cared for immediately, he wouldn't be here at my feet right now. Judy at the THD tried calling me when this happened but then took it upon herself to drive Harry, along with one of her employees Raven, to our vet when she couldn't immediately reach me. She signed that she would be responsible for anything and everything that needed to be done to save him. When I finally spoke to her, she was at the vet. Harry was being treated in the ER. Judy continued to stay in contact with the vet as well as us. When they said he was okay to come home, Judy returned and picked him up and took him back to THD. We said we would come home early, but she assured us that Harry was much better now that he was on medication and that she would stay in contact if anything changed. We were very hesitant, but we stayed a few days longer because we knew he was in such good hands. When we arrived back at THD, I was beyond thankful for just being able to pick him up and hold him. There is no question that Judy saved our dog's life. If we weren't boarding with THD, I am afraid to think of what the outcome would have been. If you are looking for a place to have your dogs loved and cared for while you're away, look no further. The Highland Dog is the BEST there is. I can't thank Judy, Raven and the rest of the staff at The Highland Dog enough for all they have done for us over the years and for loving our dogs, as if they were their own. read more

We cannot say enough great things about The Highland Dog! Our large, lab-mix dog has stayed there many times since 2015, and he is treated like a family member by THD's staff. Although we didn't realize it, our dog was getting sick when we dropped him off the last time. The staff ended up having to take him to an animal hospital while we were out of town, and their personal care of him was incredible. We knew he was in great hands although we were gone. I used to take my dog to a kennel when I went out of town, and he always came back with social issues. They typically put them in pens and don't socialize with them. At Highland Dog he comes home happy and well-adjusted because they play with the dogs and give them social time with other safe dogs. I have peace of mind knowing my dog is safe, happy and well cared for. And that he'll come home without any psychological problems. Thrilled we found The Highland Dog! We just moved to Louisville and I looked everywhere for a daycare I would feel comfortable leaving my dog. The Highland Dog is hands down the best place for daycare and boarding. Our dog is running to the door the moment she gets out of the car. The facility is always very clean and the indoor/outdoor areas are a great set up. They only take a limited number of dogs per day so each one is well taken care. Kelly is amazing! She cares for our dog like her own. Hobbes is always clean, happy, and completely tuckered out when I pick her up. We can't say enough nice things about this place! read more
