So we sat at the bar and started on small fashions and some complementary cheese ball. For the meal, I had the fried walleye with a baked potato and a salad. We had fried cheese curds for an appetizer. Everything was amazing! The fish was super good with an amazing homemade tartar sauce. I had a Brandi old-fashioned just to try it, and a few of the whiskey old-fashioned lol they were great. Overall, this was an amazing experience. This was the new restaurant of the week having dinner with some friends. It's in a small town north west of Maddison. It's off the beaten path but we'll worth a stop by. It's an old school WI supper club that's somewhat dated with a small bar and two dining rooms with decent looking wood tables and chairs, not dive cafeteria seating. At 4 pm on a Saturday they had as long as they last cheese ball and crackers on the bar as a complimentary appetizer. OMG the cheese ball is Fu%king delicious/amazing with like Keebler town house crackers. The amazing cheese ball is basically a garlic cream cheese ball rolled in cheese and the most amazing food I have had lately. The drinks at the bar were good while totally enjoying the cheese ball plate. The staff was friendly. It's Texas Roadhouse style warm fresh rolls with cinnamon butter, soft thank you so it's spreadable and more like an after dinner roll. I had the king prime rib rare with scalloped potatoes and ham with potatoes soup. This prime rib was melt in your mouth juicy and not super fatty, I like less lean because fat is flavor but it was very good. The scalloped potatoes were very good because it was served as a ball covered in melty cheese, soft and very good. The ham and potato soup on my visit was also very good in a nice creamy base with small cubes of ham and perfectly cooked potatoes, not mush but not hard so you know it's not a can. The fresh rolls were kinda a baguette style and not a soft white rolls with a slight denseness and chew, I even made a prime rib slider with the good horseradish which was great. The dipping au jus lacked depth of flavor and seasoning but salt cured that. Overall this was one of my best dinner experiences with slowly enjoying a great time with friends having appetizers, drinks , great meal with not being rushed. A Bit of Overpriced Nostalgia at The Hilltop (Cross Plains, WI) Last weekend, our group of 10 visited The Hilltop on CTH-P in Cross Plains, Wisconsin for a dinner outing. The experience was a mixed bag of decent service, mediocre food, and eye-watering prices. ## The Atmosphere The Hilltop embodies that classic supper club vibe - dark interior with dated decor that hasn't changed in decades. There's a certain charm to these rural establishments, but only if the food makes up for the lack of ambiance updates. We spent some time at the bar waiting for our table, which was fine but nothing memorable. ## The Service I'll give credit where it's due - the service was attentive. Our server was on point, and the "water boy" deserves special recognition for keeping everyone's glasses filled throughout the meal. No complaints in this department. ## The Food We ordered cheese curds for the table (a Wisconsin supper club staple) and received some complimentary rolls. For entrees, I went with the blackened grouper ($32) with a baked potato and side salad, while my wife opted for the 2-piece broasted chicken ($21). The food was... fine. Nothing was bad, but nothing was particularly impressive either. Everything was prepared competently but lacked that special touch that would justify the prices. The blackened grouper was properly cooked but it was a very small portion. ## The Value Here's where things fall apart. Our bill came to $97 for just two entrees and three drinks. For that price point in rural Wisconsin, I expect to be wowed by either exceptional food quality, generous portions, or an extraordinary experience. The Hilltop delivered none of these. ## Bottom Line The Hilltop seems to be coasting on tradition rather than culinary merit. The company we were with made the evening enjoyable, but the restaurant itself didn't contribute much to that enjoyment. If you're looking for a classic supper club experience, there are better options with more reasonable price-to-quality ratios. Would I return? Only if someone else was organizing the gathering. I've always wanted to try this place out, and I'm glad I finally made it. We came on Friday for a fish fry, and clearly made it at just the right time. We arrived a little before 5pm and it wasn't crowded at all. We opted to take a seating later just so we could do the supper club thing and wait at the bar for awhile. In the 30 or so minutes we were at the bar before our seating time, the place became jam packed! Even so, service at the bar remained attentive. Good drinks, fun bartenders! I ordered the half-order of fried cod, which was actually a great size even though it seemed small. I'd filled up on the communal bar cheese ball/crackers plus inhaled all of my french fries (sooo good. You know it's quality when no ketchup required). And obviously had to have a brandy alexander. So, perfect size for being full and not having leftovers. I liked the breading on the cod. Compared to other supper clubs I've been to, was a little disappointed that the fish fry didn't come with a salad included. I was also surprised by the limited menu -- it included zero chicken options which did not thrill one of my table mates. I get limiting the menu when it's so busy, but some kind of broasted chicken option seems fair... but I came for the fish fry so didn't bother me personally. Overall, this is a fun option near the city for your Friday night fish fry. Has all the classic ambience of your typical Wisconsin supper club. Really fun place a half hour from Madison. Cane out here to try a real Wisconsin supper club and was not disappointed. The drinks were reasonably priced, strong, and delicious. We got cheese curds which were a great starter to our steak dinner. The steaks are expensive but you know that going to a supper club. When it arrived to my table it was amazingly cooked at medium rare,which is difficult to find a supper club that cooks a steak like that. The ambiance reminded me of an old 70s restaurant, I have expected the whole place to be filled with smoke as a nostalgic throw back. The soup excellent as always and steak perfectly rare. We left room for a brandy Alexander which is large enough to share. Sadly the removed the haystack onions from the men. Was staying in Mt Horeb and innkeeper recommended this place. Had to wait 20 minutes for our table but didn't mind at all-bartender, a big guy, decked out in kilt and Scottish braids served us with a smile and mixed around 30 old fashioneds to his customers. Food was delicious, well prepared: I had ribs and my wife had a queen cut prime rib. Would go back next time we are nearby-and this time I will have an old fashioned and probably a steak-I was having a tough time deciding what the order-there was so much that looked good. Server was busy with many tables but did an excellent job. I'm not sure what to expect in terms of prices up that way but in the Chicago suburbs, where we live, you would be expected to pay more for their quality of food. We loved this place, all the old school WI supper club charm you'd expect! We had a fantastic waitress and the food was delicious! We were even given a special ice cream drink menu. There were many other options there and we ordered the strawberry shortcake-we didn't leave a drop behind! We ordered the cheese ball as a starter. It's not complimentary, but it was one of the best cheese balls I've had! It was really big so we had plenary to take home. Well, we arrived around 4:45pm to an almost empty parking lot. Usually not a good sign to get started. As we walked in, I noticed the very dark decor, but it was exactly as I expected from a mid century supper club motif.(the background music kept with the motif too.) We were immediately welcomed by the hostess who was very nice. Once seated, our waitress, who was also very nice, came and filled our waters and took our drink orders and appetizer order. The cheese ball was great. Not overpowering but subtle enough to be complex. Between the 3 of us, we ordered the Cajun Chicken Alfredo, the Fettuccine Alfredo and the Fried Walleye. All 3 were excellent. My son couldn't finish his cajun, so I wanted to try it. Big mistake!!!! I was full enough from the huge slab of walleye but the Cajun Alfredo was so good, I WAY over did just a "taste". We will definitely be back next time we're in the Madison area. read more

Post COVID you might find yourself weirded out by the community cheese and cracker plates at the bar, but close your eyes and remember this is supper club central and dig in. The old fashioneds go down easy so take your time being seated. Second on my list of supper clubs to hit this winter was the Hilltop, super close to home and under new ownership since the last time I came over 10 years ago! We met the rest of a 12 person gathering of friends for dinner and the reservations were a definite must for bigger parties. While not packed and loud and crowded, it was steady and the tables are turned efficiently. Our waitress threw out her best fake smile and gave an exuberant "of course!" when asked if we could have separate checks despite a negative answer to her query if we were sitting anywhere near our partners so it felt a little off to start. (It's ok to say no...) I had the half portion of fried cod and opted for rice pilaf - great batter on the perfectly cooked fish and half portions seem small to start but end up being just right if I am being honest with myself. I wouldn't do the pilaf again - not very fluffy, kind of bland, and I probably shouldn't have deviated from the baked potato. I didn't care for the coleslaw as it was just a bit too heavy on the mayo. I heard the scalloped potatoes were great too. Glad to have tried it again and would be happy to go back at some point but first I'll move onto the next place on my list! read more

4.6 I think this may be the winner so far of our pretty extensive Midwest supper club live tour. ...It has all of the elements you want along with very very good food! Add to that the near rural to Madison appeal and seasoned professionals on the service end and you quickly are in the realm of perfection. And just the food gets a couple gig's to prevent that. Warm very basic coleslaw that was an extremely small portion and had enough dressing to cover half a pint easily. I've been here a handful of times now and every time, it's been fantastic. I've only been for the Friday fish fry, and there's usually a wait but it's worth it. You can wait at the bar until your table is ready. Now, normally I wouldn't order an old fashioned, but here the hilltop huckleberry (blackberry brandy old fashioned) is superb and I highly recommend you order it. Once you're seated, the meal starts with some warm dinner rolls and cinnamon butter (ugh, so good). We ordered the cheese curds for an appetizer and those were great. The deep fried cod is cooked well, and the sides are delicious. The rice pilaf is my personal fav, though if you get the fries, you'll get a mountain of fries (not necessarily a bad thing!). I have to say that I am very torn on this review. Logistics and layout of the restaurant make me want to rate lower, but the food and service once at the table was just sensational. When you walk in, you are fighting up stream if it is busy. People are trying to pay and exit, all while you are trying to enter and sign in; all at the same host stand. Only two of the employees were wearing masks. I was very thrown off by this, because they are in Dane County and the mandate goes for a few more weeks. They do not take reservations for anything less than a party of six, so you're chancing a wait. However, when we left at 7:00, the bar was EMPTY. On a Friday night, that was surprising. So if we do go back, that's when we will try and get there. It was a 45-minute wait when we came in (party of 5), and we had to wait off to the side of the host stand, pretty much on top of a couple's table because the bar is such a horrible layout. A cube that is tucked in a corner of the building. So once your name gets called, you pretty much are crawling over people to get to the host stand. They shout names when your table is ready. They really needed to use the speaker system I noticed was set up everywhere, but no one was using. They almost gave up a couple's table because they didn't hear them. I am pretty sure they never called them. No matter where you are in that place, it's near the door, so always cold for the winter. Once you do make it to the bar, they give you complimentary cheese and crackers. So yummy, but I don't know about sharing this platter with umpteen amount of strangers. Double dipping? Ugh. Our service was, like I said, sensational. She brought things without me even noticing she had stopped by! You'll have to look at the photos for details on each dish, but everyone loved their food. Last Friday night, we had a disappointing experience at the Hilltop with one of the servers. I posted a review detailing our experience and the manager reached out to me to see what could be done to make it right. Today I spoke with the manager at the Hilltop. He was very sincere and genuine about wanting to make sure that we felt heard and that he could better understand our experience so he could make it right with us and follow up with the server. He apologized for the way the server responded to the charge and made it right for us. We will certainly give the Hilltop another chance. read more

This is clearly a well loved locals old school supper club. We arrived just before 5PM... by 5:30 there wasn't an open seat in the joint. I believe the very nice hostess' name was Kitty... I called from Blue Mounds State Park to see what the wait time was. She said hard to say, by 5 we can be pretty busy. When I told where I was calling from she said "we'll see you in a few minutes..." The perch was fantastic with a much larger portion than I would have expected. Nice crunch without overwhelming the perch. Coleslaw was creamy with also with a nice crunch. The NY Strip came with melted butter melting atop. Clearly authentically char-grilled. Decent sized cocktail menu with a huge Ice Cream Drink menu. We tried the Hilltop Huckleberry Old Fashioneds. A bit sweet for my taste but worth trying. We were to full for dessert, but we're talked into one of the house-made desserts to go... went with the Carrot Cake... didn't last long once we got home. This is an old school Supper Club...it's packed with locals but our waitress Mary Ann was wonderful, warm, friendly and very attentive - thank you ma'am. The portions are generous - you won't leave hungry and they clearly take pride in providing a great experience. I've been driving past The Hilltop for years - timing was never right. Ordered takeout from here on a Friday night for a fish fry. Pretty easy process of ordering online and then you get a time to arrive. The signs for pickup were well laid out. I'm glad we ordered early enough, because there was a line of cars waiting to pickup food when we arrived. The parking lot was also pretty full, so we took this as a good sign of food quality. We ordered the baked cod with scalloped potatoes and the fried perch with garlic butter beans. The cod was nicely seasoned and the 6oz was the perfect portion size for me. The scalloped potatoes were nice and creamy, yet still had the texture you wanted so that they held together on a fork. We thought that the fried perch was a little expensive, but when we looked in the container there were 6 nice sized pieces. Definitely enough for two meals. The garlic butter green beans were very buttery, so be prepared! That being said they weren't mushy at all, had a great flavor, and reheat pretty well. Also of note, the tartar sauce was pretty good.The odd highlight of the meal was the roll with the cinnamon butter. Just think of the type of rolls you would get at Texas Roadhouse; these were even better! Charming WI super club experience oozing with ambiance and twinkling lights. Started the evening in the bar with delicious cheese ball and crackers and WI beer on tap. Friendly and welcoming scene. Was seated by 5:15pm to beat the crowd. Enjoyed the Friday fried perch meal and found the fish to be tender on the inside and crispy and flavorful on the outside. Au gratin potatoes were cheesy and tender. Coleslaw was rich and thick with mayo. Of course a fluffy roll with cinnamon butter was on the table. Portion was so large it was easily shared by two people with smaller appetites. Incredible pies for dessert. We shared strawberry rhubarb and a lemon meringue with flakey crust and ample home made filling. The place was packed with lively diners enjoying the good food. I tried to make a Saturday night online reservation for 7 at 7pm. I made the request 24 hours in advance, but it was not accepted. I was instructed to show up and get on the wait list. We arrived at 6 and were told the wait would be at least an hour. People were three deep at the bar, packed in like sardines. After more than 90 minutes we were still waiting and were told they had no idea when or if we would be seated, and that they had run out of the prime rib special. We left and found a place where we could get some late night bar food. There are plenty of other supper clubs in our area with food just as good or better. This one is mismanaged. Overcharged my debit card almost $1600. Tried to call, left messages to no avail. Left a message on messenger. Still nothing. 5 days later I go to my bank because I'm getting overdraft charges. Was gonna go to the Police for credit card theft, but my bank talked me out of it. This was all over a $200 meal. We come on Saturdays for the prime rib. There used to be a lot more around Madison and its burbs, but they are closing. If you live here and haven't been to a Supper Club, you need to go to one. Ron just gave a talk and mentioned that Supper Clubs have fallen out of vogue over the years and are closing down. Their numbers keep dwindling. The Hilltop is a fun ride, in the over the river and through the woods type way for people on the West side. The turn off comes a bit quick, so keep an eye out. Put your name in with the hostess and head to the bar. They do not serve a relish tray, but have a few big a$$ cheese logs and crackers at the bar. Every time we have sat at the bar to wait for a table we have had good times with others. Not kumbaya type stuff, just , "hey how's it going" type stuff. The bartenders are good, the brandy old fashioned sweet, and the mood chill. One does need to close out the bar tab before going to the table for dinner. I agree with others and would love a salad bar. But who has a salad bar anymore? Prime rib, Queen cut suffices for a healthy appetite. They have horseradish too. Caesar salad and scalloped potatoes. While I do not understand why some in my group do not eat prime rib, they do confess to enjoying the ribs and blackened seafood. read more

I agree with all the other 4 and 5 star reviews. Whoever said they didn't like the layout of the place is goofy. It's fine and charming for a building like that. We had a party of 10. I heard zero complaints except my own. My only complaint is that my grouper was way overdone. Otherwise it was a nice piece of fish. I'd simply ask for it to be under next time. The pre dinner cocktail was hosted by Caleb who knew his business and was fun to deal with for a bunch of "old people". Server Cindy didn't miss anything I know of. Great place. Great stuff. I will say that the carrot cake was nothing special so I'll try something else next time. That's not a complaint. Just telling the owner what he must know. I would like for the next time to be soon. Probably my new favorite find. We went on a Friday wanting to try their fish fry. Luckily we got a table right away(fyi definitely want to make reservations especially on the weekends). My husband got the ribeye and it was perfectly prepared med rare and I had the fried cod which was awesome. The sides weren't the best (fries and slaw), but that fish made me forget about it. Another note..really not for kids. We had our 3 year old and they don't really have a lot of options (it's our own fault because we didn't know what to expect since it was our first time). When we asked our server if there was a childrens menu her response "Mac n cheese, tenders and fries or a cheeseburger." Obviously any of those will do just not the best atmosphere for kids. Oh I can't forget the delicious bread that we started with! Comes with a cinnamon butter...YUM. We will definitely be back. Words cannot describe how much I love the food here. The broasted chicken and fish fry are heavenly! The Scalloped Au Gratin Potatoes should be illegal they're so good.... If cocktails are your thing they can set you up right. At first I thought it seemed pricey, but it's so worth it. Average but not great. Staff was pleasant and efficient but the food was so so. My prime rib was very lean to the point it had the texture of steak and somewhat dry. Others got salmon and fried shrimp that was good. Blackened fish was a little too blackened. Good soup and ok salads. Nice neighborhood type of supper club where many of the diners knew each other's. This place is just fine. It's got a down-home atmosphere that is SUPER appealing. The wait staff all seem genuinely interested in the customers (if you like to keep to yourself, this may not be the place for you, but I'm into it). Park in the back; it's a gravel lot. Go slowly when you pull in because the front door opens right out into the driveway. We came here for Easter brunch on the fly, and they were so lovely to fit us in. The buffet was good - not the best I've ever had, but you've gotta give them credit for the varied selection of food. And it tasted good too. I ordered a bloody, and it was nothing special but it sure hit the spot. I'm looking forward to coming back for a non-buffet dinner. This place is just what you'd expect from an old Wisconsin supper club. If you want to frequent a spot where everyone gets to know you and other customers are comfortable chatting too, this is definitely the place for you. :) read more

Great service! Nice Wisconsin supper club ambiance. I loved the rolls, sides, and old-fashioned's. My beer-battered fish reminded me of how my Grandpa made his. I recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a traditional option. read more
