Quivey's is one of THE places to go for a Friday fish fry. Or go on Wednesday when they have the same menu and usually no wait for a table. Fridays are busy and we have learned to go at 4:45 or around 8:00 pm. When they have their outdoor "paddock" section open, seating eases up but tap choices are limited unless you walk in to the bar to get your own. We usually an eat at the stable or the paddock but like the house - where you can make reservations - for larger family gatherings. Also look for special events like wine tastings on Wednesdays. I've been to this establishment many times over the years that I've lived in the Madison area. It's iconic, almost a must if you will. There are three different dinning areas, the Stable Grill, the Haus, and the patio (which is a new addition). The Stable is a good choice during the week for lunch or early supper. I prefer the House for family dinners, especially on Friday. The Stable has a neat bar area for socializing and having a few cocktails before supper. Both the Stable and House are great historic spots representing early Wisconsin rural heritage and Germanic roots. The fish fry sampler for dinner is recommended for Friday fish fry, but I really prefer the Heileman Bavarian Dinner on any other evening. I would also recommend starting with the Appetizer Sampler A taste of their unique appetizers, to be shared around the table. Visited Quivey's Grove for the first time for a Saturday date night. Made a reservation in advance for a table at the Stone House. The venue was really cozy & rustic looking. On my last night in Madison, I wanted something local that was casual, but not as casual as just burgers and sandwiches. To that my buddy recommended Quivey's Grove - Stable Grill. Quivey's Grove is two restaurants in one with the main house being a full dining and semi-upscale experience. While the Stabke Grill is a casual, old school style steakhouse vibe with all wooden walls, floors, tables, seating along with dim lights and a slightly limited menu from across the sidewalk. It wasn't busy when we arrived, so we bellied up the bar and were immediately greeted by the bartender (Cory, I believe). He was excellent from start to finish! We ordered a few cocktails to get us started then settled on a couple of entrees including the schnitzel and meatloaf. The schnitzel was perfectly crispy, thin and the mushrooms and butter sauce on top set it off! The meatloaf was tasty, but not the best I've had. Was a bit firmer than I am used to and the red potatoes were like warm. Nothing that detracted from the dish as a whole, but definitely noticeable. During our meals we were talking sports and the bartender switched the tv for us so we could finish the Yankees game. Very cool of him! Overall, we enjoyed ourselves at Quivey's. Not sure I would rush back during my next visit to Madison, but I wouldn't run away either. read more

The waitress was really friendly and helpful with menu selections. We started out with the muffins they always serve you. A nice touch! Then we had the stuffed mushroom appetizer with Madeira sauce. So good! Next, we had the chicken and asparagus soup. From the first bite, I was hooked. Such creamy, yummy goodness. I took out lunch from here on a Friday. This place was in a silent area. They have a dedicated parking lot. And it was mostly empty at that time. I was there for the fish fry and was not sure which one to go for. So finally decided to go with the fish combo. Cod fry was the best, and whitefish fry coming in as a second. Baked code was ok. A delicious dinner at this storied spot. Ate at the Stable Grill, one of the several dining rooms at Quivey's Grove. The Stable Grill is in 2 rooms. The dining side is in what was originally a stable - stone walls, big timber, low lighting. Adjacent to the dining room is the bar, built more recently but using recovered timber from several old barns. Decor and ambiance is upscale in a rustic way, but not fancy. It's a cool vibe. We were treated to great service by our bartender and server. Friendly and efficient; orders placed accurately, food served as ordered, quickly and with a smile. THANK YOU! We started, of course, with cheese curds. You can't be in Wisconsin without eating cheese curds, right? Delicious chunks of breaded, deep fried cheese, served with a creamy ranch dressing for dipping. Yum! I tried the Brooklyn Beef. This is a sirloin, smothered with sautéed mushrooms & onions in a red wine sauce. It's served with half of a baked potato with melted cheese on top. The beef is tender and juicy, ordered and served as ordered - medium rare. The mushroom/onion/red wine sauce was well blended, a great complement to the beef without being overpowering. Delicious! We ended the meal with apple crisp. Chunks of apple baked in an oatmeal crumb crust, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Soft apples with just the right amount of cinnamon and sugar, baked in a crispy, chunky oatmeal crust. The balance of the sweet with the vanilla ice cream is sublime. Add the texture of the oatmeal - this is a great dessert. For a great meal in a rustic setting, give this place a try! read more

I can't believe I've driven past this place so many times. The outside is cute, well maintained, and very unique. The location has two restaurants on site. One requires reservations and the other does not. I chose to do takeout from the stable grill because I was tired from work and wanted to take something home. My food was ready in perfect time for my pick up schedule. I opted for the cheese curds and the white fish because not many restaurants offer a white fish in Madison. The white fish was crusted with pretzel which was lovely and crispy. The cheese curds were good but I wouldn't recommend spending $11 for such a small portion. This is my number one dining spot for fish fry. They have Whitefish, baked or fried Cod, and also trout on the menu. The baked cod and the pretzel encrusted white fish are the best ones we have tried there. The cheese curds come out hot and cheesy. Dinners are easily shareable if you don't want a big meal. My son found this place - it was impressive. Situated in a converted farm house, this place has an extensive menu and great food. Our service was outstanding. Yes, you definitely need reservations. We arrived on time for our reservation and were promptly seated. For appetizers, we had their Onion Tarts, the Gin Garden Basil and the Stuffed Mushrooms, all of which were very good. For the main course, our party had 2 Lake Trout Phoenix, and 2 Tender Sterling Beef dinners. It's difficult to describe the mix of flavors. Review is solely for the Stone House. Made reservations to come here on a Friday night for an anniversary dinner. It was my first time here, so I kind of had high expectations which leads to the 3 star review. When we went in, it was kind of a maze to try to find where you check in. Stupidly we ended up walking up and down the stairs, before realizing that we just had to zig-zag on the main level to find the host. He was very friendly, as was our waitress, and the bartender. We ended up being seated upstairs where we had a room to ourselves through most of our dinner. It was pretty nice that there were only 3 tables in the room. As for the food, they are running an Oktober-feast Special, so we figured that we should order that and then we also got the Chicken Fairchild. The meal also came with muffins, with the variety of the day being apple cinnamon. They had a little too much brown sugar on the outside for my liking, but the texture was pleasant. Also more of a dessert than a bread to have with dinner, which kind of threw me off. The Chicken Fairchild came with 3 chicken tenders, essentially, spaetzle smothered with swiss cheese sauce, and brussels sprouts in a balsamic vinegar glaze. The tenders had a crispy breading, but it did fall off easily. It was also a little saltier than I would have liked. The brussels sprouts were my favorite with the balsamic glaze. Not overly sauced, just enough to give flavor. The spaetzle, which was the thing I was looking most forward to trying was kind of a disappointment in this dish. The Swiss cheese sauce was dolloped on and didn't really do anything for it in my opinion. That being said the spaetzle on the feast special was much better as it just had some shredded cheese on top. The Oktober-feast special had the option for an appetizer, entree, and dessert. We went with the Konigsberger Klopse, which was seasoned veal and pork meatballs. This was by far the standout of the dinner. It had a great flavor and paired very nicely with the dill cream sauce. For the entree we got the Bavarian sampler. This included a pork schnitzel, veal sausage, and pork chop with spaetzle and apple cherry kraut. The smoked pork chop was the star of the 3 meats. It looked a lot like ham, but was excellent in flavor. Again this spaetzle was better. Finally, we finished with the black forest cherry cheesecake. It was a vanilla cheesecake with a chocolate cookie crust, cherry sauce, chocolate ganache, and whipped cream. Our issue was that the components didn't seem to go well together. The cheesecake had a lot of tang but it was overwhelmed by the sweetness of the cherry and the cookie crust. Also the crust had a quite grainy texture, almost like sand. Overall, the food was fine but nothing really extraordinary and the portions were the right size for one meal. That being said, the price was a little much to only get one meal out of the dish. Hopefully, we'll try the Stable Grill in the future. I think that may be more towards my taste. read more

Quiveys Grove is beautiful at Christmas. Twinkling white lights abound both outside and inside. They also offer a special menu in December and we always look forward to dining in the Stone House. We had reservations and were promptly seated upon arrival. We had a nice table by the window. They make great brandy old fashions, muddled and served with a cinnamon stick so we ordered them. Dinners come with fruit muffins and a choice of soup or salad. The apple muffins were warm and very good. My husband ordered the cream of mushroom wild rice soup and the duck with port wine and cherry sauce, wild rice and sautéed apples. The duck was moist and had very crispy skin. I had the salad with raspberry vinaigrette and the prime rib served with garlic bread pudding, twice baked potato and horseradish sauce. The food was delicious. We usually skip dessert but we couldn't resist ordering the warm gingerbread pudding with brandy cream sauce. So glad we splurged. read more

I love Quivey's Friday fish. It is arguably the best. 5 for the food which we normally carry out or eat in the Stable. The paddock (outdoor) dining misses the mark on many counts. The dinner cost the same as in the Stable or house, but the meal is stacked on a small plate. Fish on fries, bread on fish. Just piled up on this little plate, with no bread plate. Dinnerware's plastic in a plastic bag and condiments are in little pouches. Not to complain, but if this is what I were to expect, I would go 3 miles to Verona Culver's and pay half the price for a likewise delicious fish dinner. I reluctantly gave it a 1 star review because not once, not twice but 3 times they loudly moved dining tables and chairs to accommodate groups of diners. With an amazing fish fry, their Friday's were pretty busy, you are able to make a reservation online on their website. I'd highly recommend. We stopped by around dinner time, sun beginning to set, and had a wonderful outdoor evening. The space is beautiful, they even set up a small bar outside to serve the patio guests. They are currently offering seating in the paddock tents limited seating in the stable grill, and the stone house has limited indoor/outdoor seating on Friday's and Saturday's.
