    Small bar

This was the new restaurant of the week having dinner with some friends. It's in a small town north west of Maddison. It's off the beaten path but we'll worth a stop by. It's an old school WI supper club that's somewhat dated with a small bar and two dining rooms with decent looking wood tables and chairs, not dive cafeteria seating. At 4 pm on a Saturday they had as long as they last cheese ball and crackers on the bar as a complimentary appetizer. OMG the cheese ball is Fu%king delicious/amazing with like Keebler town house crackers. The amazing cheese ball is basically a garlic cream cheese ball rolled in cheese and the most amazing food I have had lately. The drinks at the bar were good while totally enjoying the cheese ball plate. The staff was friendly. It's Texas Roadhouse style warm fresh rolls with cinnamon butter, soft thank you so it's spreadable and more like an after dinner roll. I had the king prime rib rare with scalloped potatoes and ham with potatoes soup. This prime rib was melt in your mouth juicy and not super fatty, I like less lean because fat is flavor but it was very good. The scalloped potatoes were very good because it was served as a ball covered in melty cheese, soft and very good. The ham and potato soup on my visit was also very good in a nice creamy base with small cubes of ham and perfectly cooked potatoes, not mush but not hard so you know it's not a can. The fresh rolls were kinda a baguette style and not a soft white rolls with a slight denseness and chew, I even made a prime rib slider with the good horseradish which was great. The dipping au jus lacked depth of flavor and seasoning but salt cured that. Overall this was one of my best dinner experiences with slowly enjoying a great time with friends having appetizers, drinks , great meal with not being rushed. The whole experience just unfolded at a natural enjoyable place so the elusive 5 star from me is out today, nice job breaking bread with my closest friends.

1/2 order of fried cod with french fries

I've always wanted to try this place out, and I'm glad I finally made it. We came on Friday for a fish fry, and clearly made it at just the right time. We arrived a little before 5pm and it wasn't crowded at all. We opted to take a seating later just so we could do the supper club thing and wait at the bar for awhile. In the 30 or so minutes we were at the bar before our seating time, the place became jam packed! Even so, service at the bar remained attentive. Good drinks, fun bartenders! I ordered the half-order of fried cod, which was actually a great size even though it seemed small. I'd filled up on the communal bar cheese ball/crackers plus inhaled all of my french fries (sooo good. You know it's quality when no ketchup required). And obviously had to have a brandy alexander. So, perfect size for being full and not having leftovers. I liked the breading on the cod. Compared to other supper clubs I've been to, was a little disappointed that the fish fry didn't come with a salad included. I was also surprised by the limited menu -- it included zero chicken options which did not thrill one of my table mates. I get limiting the menu when it's so busy, but some kind of broasted chicken option seems fair... but I came for the fish fry so didn't bother me personally. Overall, this is a fun option near the city for your Friday night fish fry. Has all the classic ambience of your typical Wisconsin supper club. Friendly service and efficient at turning over tables while not being pushy to get you to leave.

Really fun place a half hour from Madison. Cane out here to try a real Wisconsin supper club and was not disappointed. The drinks were reasonably priced, strong, and delicious. We got cheese curds which were a great starter to our steak dinner. The steaks are expensive but you know that going to a supper club. When it arrived to my table it was amazingly cooked at medium rare, which is difficult to find a supper club that cooks a steak like that. The ambiance reminded me of an old 70s restaurant, I have expected the whole place to be filled with smoke as a nostalgic throw back. Overall great place to eat and worth the trip from madison.

Great service, excellent food. Dinners come with a soup or salad, choice of potato or vegetable and rolls. The broasted chicken was crispy and moist. The soup excellent as always and steak perfectly rare. We left room for a brandy Alexander which is large enough to share. Sadly the removed the haystack onions from the men. This was our favorite appetizer and we really miss it.

This place has awesome food and service. It's no wonder The Hilltop keeps customers coming back and back again. The fried cheese curds were mouth-watering delicious! Loved them. My blackened flounder was incredible.....flaky and moist with wonderful spice. My husband enjoyed the Saturday prime rib and rated it very high. I am only sorry that I hadn't ventured out to The Hilltop sooner.

We loved this place, all the old school WI supper club charm you'd expect! We had a fantastic waitress and the food was delicious! We were even given a special ice cream drink menu. There were many other options there and we ordered the strawberry shortcake-we didn't leave a drop behind! We ordered the cheese ball as a starter. It's not complimentary, but it was one of the best cheese balls I've had! It was really big so we had plenary to take home. Overall, we'd love to return to this hometown classic restaurant and give some of the other items a try.

Great supper club! Free cheese ball at the bar, good drinks, the staff is amazing. They have a big parking lot and the food is real tasty! We got the shrimp and cod and they were both amazing. Highly suggest the homemade desserts also!

Solidly mediocre! Excellent: -It's on the way to the House on the Rock -It's on the *Wisconsin Supper Clubs* map, so we can cross it off the list -The food looks delicious Great: -Au gratin potatoes -Blue cheese salad dressing -The atmosphere/bar/reception -We didn't order the onion rings or the 'spicy' shrimp appetizer! (See note on quality of breading & lack of seasoning) Good: -Prime rib, medium rare -Honey mustard salad dressing -Baked potato -The wait service -Christmas decorations (fair effort) Ok: -Tartar sauce -We were there less than an hour, ordered immediately, and they're not busy, yet we we left feeling subtly rushed by our server (at least the service was fast - so that's a win!) -They put salt & pepper on the table (glad I didn't have to ask, thankfully I didn't insult anyone by asking, unfortunate because the food needed to be seasoned after it was served) Questionable: -*If neither the relish tray ($10) nor the cheese & crackers ($13) are complimentary, then does it still qualify as a legit Wisconsin Supper Club?* (They should have their Wisconsin Supper Club cred suspended until they improve in this area) -That's ok, we're from Wisconsin & we got our own supply of Wisconsin cheese & crackers in the car -Walleye wasn't flaky or tender, it was thick, loose, wet & boggy (imposter fish, perhaps?) Disappointing: -The dinners arrived fast, yet luke warm -Walleye (for $30 on a Saturday, you'd think they could pan fry it) -Everything is under-seasoned & bland -Is this tiny plastic container of unsalted brown water au jus, or are they messing with us? -Soup OR salad (not soup AND salad), one soup option, no French onion -Not enough menu options Never again: -Blackberry old fashioned (is the secret ingredient NyQuil?) -The breading on the fish & shrimp is soggy & flavorless (looks are deceiving, it's over floured & soft - had to peel it off to stomach the fish & shrimp; get it either grilled/baked instead, or better yet - just get something else) Unacceptable: -Dinner rolls (napkins have better texture & flavor) & the weird cinnamon butter -Shrimp cocktail sauce looks & tastes like tomato paste Hilarious: -$19 classic wedge salad (is this a joke?)

Fish Fry. Yummy old fashioned too! :)

Great place for a supper club night out. Best thing is they take reservations, which was helpful for our larger group. 2nd best was the desserts! Amazing turtle cheesecake!

I've been here a handful of times now and every time, it's been fantastic. I've only been for the Friday fish fry, and there's usually a wait but it's worth it. You can wait at the bar until your table is ready. Now, normally I wouldn't order an old fashioned, but here the hilltop huckleberry (blackberry brandy old fashioned) is superb and I highly recommend you order it. Once you're seated, the meal starts with some warm dinner rolls and cinnamon butter (ugh, so good). We ordered the cheese curds for an appetizer and those were great. The deep fried cod is cooked well, and the sides are delicious. The rice pilaf is my personal fav, though if you get the fries, you'll get a mountain of fries (not necessarily a bad thing!). If you order the deep fried lake perch, I hope you're coming hungry and wearing some stretchy pants. Overall friendly service, fantastic food!

I have to say that I am very torn on this review. Logistics and layout of the restaurant make me want to rate lower, but the food and service once at the table was just sensational. When you walk in, you are fighting up stream if it is busy. People are trying to pay and exit, all while you are trying to enter and sign in; all at the same host stand. Only two of the employees were wearing masks. I was very thrown off by this, because they are in Dane County and the mandate goes for a few more weeks. They do not take reservations for anything less than a party of six, so you're chancing a wait. However, when we left at 7:00, the bar was EMPTY. On a Friday night, that was surprising. So if we do go back, that's when we will try and get there. It was a 45-minute wait when we came in (party of 5), and we had to wait off to the side of the host stand, pretty much on top of a couple's table because the bar is such a horrible layout. A cube that is tucked in a corner of the building. So once your name gets called, you pretty much are crawling over people to get to the host stand. They shout names when your table is ready. They really needed to use the speaker system I noticed was set up everywhere, but no one was using. They almost gave up a couple's table because they didn't hear them. I am pretty sure they never called them. No matter where you are in that place, it's near the door, so always cold for the winter. Once you do make it to the bar, they give you complimentary cheese and crackers. So yummy, but I don't know about sharing this platter with umpteen amount of strangers. Double dipping? Ugh. Our service was, like I said, sensational. She brought things without me even noticing she had stopped by! You'll have to look at the photos for details on each dish, but everyone loved their food. I haven't had a steak that delicious (with mushrooms to match), in a long while! Four stars just because of the food and service at the table.

After waiting to be seated, we waited nearly another 20 minutes before our waitress came over. I can understand getting behind, but this pattern continued all night. Our appetizers (escargot) and then food both took forever to come out, and the waitress rarely checked on our table. We nearly got up to leave before the appetizer arrived (which I've never done before). To top it off, the steak sandwich was mediocre and overcook, and my friend's steak was also unimpressive. Still giving this review 2 stars since the atmosphere is neat and our escargot was tasty and buttery, but I doubt I'll be coming back to the Tornado Room.

The asparagus was okay, again no salt or pepper here. My boyfriends steak tasted much better. The garlic mashed potatoes are also good. We ordered a bourbon old fashioned and it was super good. My whole family had another wonderful dinner experience. It was packed, so it was a bit louder, but we didn't mind. We were distracted by all the food. The cheese curds were lightly breaded and fried perfectly. They even had a bit of a squeak. The haystacks were enjoyed even by my family who didn't like onions. The prize app were the pork bellies. Tender, meaty, and covered with a sweet tangy bourbon glaze. I could've eaten those as an entree! My filet was a perfect med-rare. Tender with just the right amount of char. The ribeye was prepared with the same tender perfection as well. My son, who lives in Chicago, said his steak rivaled those of the steakhouses in Windy City. He really enjoyed his filet. The scallops were seared to perfection, and they were nestled in a bed of soft, warm, creamy risotto. And I mean CREAMY. It's the way they should be made. HPSH doesn't skimp either on the number of scallops; we had to box up the rest. We didn't have room for dessert, but we did box some up for later.....and they tasted great. The restaurant is fairly small, but cozy. The ambiance is very relaxed and social. It was a bit noisy but a good noisy, not obnoxious noisy; people having good conversations and lots of laughing. Our server greeted us in a timely manner and took our drink order. I ordered an old fashioned, my wife a Hugo spritz. Both were fantastic but just a heads up, the drinks were relatively strong. The menu is relatively small but still enough to choose from and not be disappointed. My wife and I both ordered the 5 oz filet with shrimp. We split a side of green beans. When our food reached our table, we thought that it might not be enough to fill us but we were more than full afterwards and agreed that anything bigger might be too much. The food was excellent, one of the better steaks I've had in a while. The service was good and our server, Sammy, did a real nice job of taking care of us without being overly intrusive. Prices were appropriate for the quality, maybe a little higher than you would expect but still worth it. If you're looking for a high quality, local small town steak experience that isn't a chain, I highly recommend Driftless Social.

The automated recording said to send a Facebook message for reservations, so I went to their page. It was very simple, and was able to get a reservation for 7:30 pm. I asked if it made a difference that it was for a birthday celebration, and they said it definitely mattered, and that they offered a boozy dessert if that was something he would be interested in. When we arrived Saturday evening, we were immediately ushered over to our table. It was the perfect spot for a duo, and the atmosphere was very cozy. Everyone was so kind and we immediately ordered beverages - I chose the Aviation martini, and my husband a glass of Caymus. Martinis are obviously all alcohol, but DAMN was it strong. I don't drink much anymore, so it may have been a poor choice for myself. My husband had been wanting to try Caymus for a long time, and he enjoyed his glass. For our entrees, I opted for the 5 oz. filet mignon with coconut shrimp and a side of Smoky's onion rings. For the accompaniment, I chose the garlic & fine herb cheese crust, which was phenomenal! My mouth is watering as I type this, recalling how delicious it was. I ordered my steak medium, but it was definitely more on the medium rare side. I would have sent it back, but by the time I discovered it (it was so dark in the restaurant) it was mostly just the middle left. I decided to box the remainder up to cook further and enjoy at home. The coconut shrimp was sweet and crunchy (perfect) and the onion rings were very tasty, especially with the side of peppercorn ranch. For his entree, my husband ordered the 16 oz. ribeye with local melted bleu crust and Smoky's hashbrowns. You know he loves his steak when he takes a bite, closes his eyes, and chews it slowly. Driftless Social knocked it out of the park with this one! He absolutely devoured it. His only complaint was that the bleu cheese was more of a sauce, and less of a crust. Now on to the hashbrowns - we LOVED Smoky's when it was still around, and when we found out that Driftless Social was incorporating favorites from Smoky's, we were stoked. My father-in-law worked as a bus boy there in the 1950s, and we considered it a staple in our families for many celebrations over the years. We were gutted when it closed. These hashbrowns, however, were not what we remembered. They were almost reminiscent of a potato bake, which was a little too starchy for us. We really enjoyed the crispy top though! When it was time to order dessert, I mentioned to the waitress that it was his birthday. She listed off 3 desserts, so we assumed that all were complimentary for birthdays, and not just the boozy dessert that I was informed of ahead of time. Partly our fault, but it was also presented in a strange way. My husband ordered the apple crisp (absolutely HEAVENLY), but we were charged for it. We asked the waitress to see if it was a mistake, and she said it wasn't. I did reach out via Facebook messenger to the restaurant regarding this, and they were so kind! They sincerely apologized, and are sending a gift card in the mail. We are very excited to return - I need more of that garlic & fine herb cheese crust in my life!
