We were passing by the town of Melrose and decided to stop to eat at The Hitching Post and we are so glad we did. Our waitress was fantastic and our hamburgers were thick and juicy. The cottage fries were crispy...just the way we like them too. Our daughter had the French Dip and she said it was amazing. After my husband tried a bite he said it was the best tasting French Dip he has ever had. Wish I would have taken pictures of the food but we were way too hungry and the food did not last.

Ate at this this restaurant twice once for breakfast and once for dinner. Both meals were very good. Tried the bacon, pancake and egg combo for breakfast. Lots of huge bacon strips and the eggs were cooked perfectly. Big stack of pancakes. Had the ham by steak for dinner and really liked it. The best thing I have had in a while. Great service. Nice place to stop for a meal if passing through.

The best pork shank I've ever had it was tender well seasoned and the mashed potatoes complimented it with perfection

We hit dinner time with a load of kids and found ourselves in the middle of nowhere, MT. This place popped up and I called to see if they accepted kids. She said "yes, it's a bar but we have kids all the time". So we decided to go for it. If you drink, it has a large bar with a pool table and a little casino. The menu is plenty big for everyone. Lots of fried foods, burgers, sandwiches, seafood and steaks, plus rotating desserts that you have to ask about. We had seen pics of some berry pies, unfortunately they only had some cheesecakes so we passed. We all left full, satisfied, and enjoyed a great service. As we were leaving the bartender came over and thanked us. We chatted for a minute. Fun little place, worth the stop and every penny.

Our fishing guide said this place had great steaks. He was right. Definitely a Locals place. Again, amazing steaks!

Basic fare. Hole in the wall joint frequented by a local crowd. Food was just ok, but would eat there again if hungry.

I spent a week in Melrose last April (for fly fishing the Big Hole) and ate at the Hitching Post every night.

The Guinness is always poured to perfection, complete with impressive beer art. The fish and chips remain my go-to, but I tried the pub burger today and it was spot on--perfectly cooked and served on a pretzel bun that really sets it apart. The entire staff is friendly, welcoming, and attentive. If you're looking for an authentic Irish pub vibe, it's tough to find a place that does it better.

While this restaurant came highly recommended by everyone we asked, I hesitated at first because it wasn't a historic building. It seems most if not all historical restaurants are long gone. Ultimately, we decided to give it a try--and I am so glad we did! We shared the the shepherd's pie and bread pudding for dessert. We hesitated at first with the shepherds pie as it was not the typical recipe, this was made with lamb and topped with colcannon potatoes. I was pleasantly surprised when the kitchen thoughtfully split our plate for us. Because our friends weren't familiar with those potatoes, they settled on the fish instead, ordering the 2-piece and 3-piece cod dinners. They thought the fish was fantastic and the lamb shepherd's pie was absolutely delicious. The bread pudding was excellent too. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and we highly recommend stopping in!
