She took a dirty chemical towel to wipe around the customer beer glass. These ladies act very suspicious and a pick me energy. She called my homegirl a man because she was tall. When greeting us at the door!!! She didn't even apologize and she clearly saw how uncomfortable and upset my friend girl was. FOOD: UNDERCOOKED, Raw fries and sloppy burger. It didn't taste like anything and but the bacon was the only thing I tasted other than the dry tasteless meat. I won't be referring my colleagues to this place, however, the atmosphere of the bar is okay. But no one wants a dirty staff and ladies who seem to have attitudes about being there to serve you. Hire some cooler people please, also to the cook PUT SOME SEASONING ON THE FOOD SIR, and wash your hands when entering the kitchen. He kept on walking in and out and going to tables with gloves on. We were passing by the town of Melrose and decided to stop to eat at The Hitching Post and we are so glad we did. Our waitress was fantastic and our hamburgers were thick and juicy. The cottage fries were crispy...just the way we like them too. Our daughter had the French Dip and she said it was amazing. After my husband tried a bite he said it was the best tasting French Dip he has ever had. Wish I would have taken pictures of the food but we were way too hungry and the food did not last. read more

Came here to melrose for a fishin trip, saw this place and decided to try it. Great lil bar n grill inside with plenty of tv's and Slot machines to entertain you. There was 4 of us and we all enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners here, Full menu for breakfast and dinners Surloin steak, soup n salad, pizza n wings. Food was excellent and was cooked just right and drinks were good too with plenty of choices for beer n alcohol. Jaden our server did an excellent job and kept the drinks coming and checking on us while helping others. I mean, there isn't much around here, so it was packed. The bar had music playing and the next door RV Park and rooms also add to the crowd. You can make reservations if you stay next door and it might be a good idea on weekends. Kitchen was clearly overwhelmed, took 45min for our food to arrive. Wow!!!!! There aren't any great options for breakfast where we are currently staying/visiting so we decided to drive to Melrose for a Sunday breakfast! So worth the drive. The building itself is so cute and staff were very welcoming. Coffee was spot on. Everything was cooked to perfection and delicious. We had the eggs with a side and French toast. Loved it all but I must say The French toast topped the cake for me!!!! I love sweets! This French toast was filled with flavor with every bite I took! I also loved how it was cooked! The service was amazing, but we might have been there at a non busy time. Looked like mostly locals staring at us when we walked in. We got there late afternoon before dinner was being served. That's what I was looking forward too. Chicken tenders and fries were just average. The ranch was surprisingly good. We had a burger and a patty melt for the other meals. The burger was cooked great and messy that made it delicious. The patties were not bigger than anywhere else. The patty melt was delicious, but on the smaller side. I wish it was a little bigger. They only had a little sliver of the cheesecake left so we passed on that. We will try again for the dinner menu. read more

We love this place. Food is consistently good. Owner is there and mingling with customers making sure the food is cooked to customers liking. The atmosphere is definitely Montana, pictures of "The last best place", wildlife, mountains and of course, the Big Hole River! Servers are very friendly and helpful! I stopped here passing through on my way to Idaho Falls. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It is super clean. Decorate nicely and for a small place it wasn't cramped. The food was good as well as fresh. It is definitely a locals hangout as everyone who walked through the door was known by the bartender/server. Danie, the Bartender who was as also handling the server duties was awesome. She was efficient taking care of everyone and kept checking in with me. While staying at the Sportsman Lodge we had dinner and breakfast here. The pancakes were so fluffy and good I was full for most of the day. For dinner I had the Hitchin Post Burger (minus the blue cheese) it was good. Service was great with very friendly staff. The inside makes you feel at home. read more

Ate at this this restaurant twice once for breakfast and once for dinner. Both meals were very good. Tried the bacon, pancake and egg combo for breakfast. Lots of huge bacon strips and the eggs were cooked perfectly. Big stack of pancakes. Had the ham by steak for dinner and really liked it. The best thing I have had in a while. Great service. Went for the first time for 2025 Valentine's Day dinner. I enjoyed the salmon special, hubby had the Prime Rib. The salmon was delicious and I enjoyed it for two more dinners from take-home. My husband's prime rib was tasty and cooked as he requested. We both loved the generous salads and twice baked potatoes. The service was great - Attentive but not bothersome. We hit dinner time with a load of kids and found ourselves in the middle of nowhere, MT. This place popped up and I called to see if they accepted kids. She said "yes, it's a bar but we have kids all the time". So we decided to go for it. If you drink, it has a large bar with a pool table and a little casino. The menu is plenty big for everyone. Lots of fried foods, burgers, sandwiches, seafood and steaks, plus rotating desserts that you have to ask about. We had seen pics of some berry pies, unfortunately they only had some cheesecakes so we passed. We all left full, satisfied, and enjoyed a great service. As we were leaving the bartender came over and thanked us. We chatted for a minute. Fun little place, worth the stop and every penny. read more

We stopped here for breakfast and I am glad we did. I ordered pancakes with eggs over hard and crispy bacon. The eggs were perfect - no burned edges. The bacon was crispy and delicious. The pancakes were sweet enough you didn't need syrup. I only ate 2 of the 4 slices of bacon and 1of the 3 pancakes. I NEVER take leftover pancakes with me but I did today! I ate the bacon and pancakes for lunch (no syrup on the pancakes - did not need it). Iced tea was good, too. Freshly brewed. Hubby got biscuits and gravy with eggs and bacon and he made short work of all of it. We will definitely stop there again when we are in the area. read more

While spending the night at the Salmon Fly Campground during a bike tour through the Pioneers, I rode up to The Hitching Post to grab a drink. As a storm rolled through, one drink turned into three (maybe more; I lost track) and my stomach started rumbling. Basic fare. Hole in the wall joint frequented by a local crowd. Food was just ok, but would eat there again if hungry.

I didn't expect anything special when I walked in but I was completely surprised by how good the fish & chips were. My 10 year old likes to think of himself as THE chicken strip authority and he loved them as well. The only thing that keeps me from saying is they needed more help waitressing (ours was good but she was swamped and didn't have help). I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again!! read more

I spent a week in Melrose last April (for fly fishing the Big Hole) and ate at the Hitching Post every night. Everything about this place is wonderful: the service, the food, and the prices. The "ambiance" was classic small town Montana and could not have been better. Hanging out in the bar was fun too. Lot's of friendly locals with great stories.
