An Oasis in the Arkansas Countryside I was in the Osceola area for business meetings and was tasked by one of my colleagues to cater a lunch for 10 people. I was directed to the Hog Pen as the closest place to get food for a group. I must have driven past the non-descript building a million times and never even noticed it. The Hog Pen is a local mecca for barbecue in the area. When I arrived, I was lucky to have just beaten the lunch rush and the kind staff helped me put together a lunch for twelve people. My order had pulled pork, dry-rubbed ribs, smoked chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, and peach cobbler. The staff also provided me with buns, cutlery, napkins, sauces and everything else needed for a catered lunch. The food was exceptional, as I have had Barbecue from all over the US and can make a qualified statement about the flavour and quality. The chicken and ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and had an excellent smokiness. The rub was not overpowering and the flavour was mild with just a little touch of heat. The Pulling pork was soft and smoky and went well with the sauce provided by the Hog Pen team. In the end, there was not one scrap of food left as every morsel of food was eaten by the Big River Steel team whom I had brought the lunch for. It was good. The people were very nice. The only reason it's not a 5 star review is my ribs were not hot. I know you can't have hot and fresh off smoker due to cooking times and it was towards closing time, but my ribs were almost cool to touch. Maybe the warmer knob got bumped or they had already turned it off for the day?? Ribs tasted great just should have thrown them in the microwave for a min before bringing them out to me. read more

A great spot in the middle of nowhere. I opted for the half chicken with coleslaw and beans. While the beans and coleslaw are unremarkable, the chicken was well done. It literally pulled easily off the bones. Pricing was a little high, but not too bad. There seems also be a serious lack of restaurants in this area. Ultimately, I would recommend here. read more

I really enjoyed The Hog Pen's Half rack of ribs. The ribs tasted as though they were first boiled and then smoked. The barbecue sauce really added a nice flavoring. The only concern I had was I wish the serving size of the coleslaw and baked beans were a bit more than just small Styrofoam cups; specially if you were eating in rather than taking out. Ok so I was just working in the area and asked some local State Troopers where the best place to eat was in the county. They told me about this whole in the wall place. Well I decided I'd try it....IT. WAS. AWESOME!! I got the pork steak and it was seasoned perfect. Didn't need to add sauce. The coleslaw was wonderful and now my new favorite. It's in the middle of nowhere but I'll definitely make the trip again just to try something else on their menu. read more

Stopped here with my mom on our way back to Chicago from Texas and it was great! Mom got the bbq wrap, which was wonderful because you got a bit of everything, and it was all good :). I got the bbq sandwich and it was great, with nice, smoky meat and great vinegar coleslaw. The fries were also excellent, thin and crispy. Sauce was good too. Our server was very nice and friendly, and she had an adorable helper as well, a little girl. A great find, and popular with the locals too based on the license plates we saw. Would definitely recommend coming here if you're heading north on US 55. It's a slight detour, but well worth it! :) read more

Stopped in for lunch which you know will be good when the parking lot is packed and the local law enforcement is there eating! They always know the best places for a home-cooked meal. Pulled pork was ok, French fries were WAY underdone. Just basically a greasy French fry. Not even fully cooked. I will not go back.

This is a fantastic barbecue place. We had the ribs and pulled pork. Tender meat, great flavor, great sauce. The cole slaw was like my grandma used to make. The fried okra had just the right crispy coating, but tender on the inside. And they weren't sliced, these were full size okra. Fresh! I'm just sad we were too full to try the pecan cobbler. Well worth the 10 min drive off interstate 55. We highly recommend!!!!!!! read more

I'm here for business trip. This place looks not that fancy from outside even inside, but the ribs were so amazing! The best BBQ ribs I've get ever, meat is soft and juicy, the sauce taste is just right no need to add more other sauce. I usually don't eat much during lunch but I finished a half rib rack! Amazing!
