Most of the staff we saw were on their phones in the middle of the day in view of customers, one was so interested in his videos he wouldn't get out of the way for customers to walk around. Another person who checked us out was engaged in what seemed like a very aggravating personal call too. So if you know exactly what you want, get it and go. You can order stuff online as well but it's always nice to see it in the store first. They also have free bathrooms and Halloween stuff as well as plants. I prefer the North Ave location for their vast garden center, but the Elston Home Depot is good too. In fact, they are about a 10 minute drive from each other, so go to both! I just left here. Every time I come in here the "cashiers" ring me up in self check out. Are you a cashier? or is this self check out? I am NOT handicapped I am well and able to do things on my own. Today I looked around and was like I don't see them ringing anyone else up. Why is it always me? I asked the "cashiers" they had no real excuse. I said why didn't you ring them up? Why didn't you ring that guy up? Why am I the only one? I stood in customer service line and asked for the manager, the store manager should know these things. Instead I talked to someone named Chad who never let me talk to a manager and said "I'm sorry you feel that way" and he will pass my concerns along. It's not how I feel it's what happened, and it happens every time I go there. Why? Is it the color of my skin? Is it my youthful looks? I will start out by saying that in general, I've had very good experiences at this particular Home Depot, aka store #1961 on Elston. They have lots of people on the floor to help; they are generally knowledgeable and helpful; Customer Service is fairly pleasant; and they even gave me store credit and took a return of something I'd bought at Menard's. So I will keep coming here for things when I need them, basically, the minor things like hardware, lights, grill stuff, and the like. That said, you are taking your chances when you do a major purchase with them that includes after-the-sale service, and there are times it can all go upside-down. This is one of them. Bought eight interior doors plus installation for a cost in excess of $5K. The purchase itself was basically frictionless. The installation, however, was--to put not too fine a point on it--a fucking nightmare. First of all, the molding that came with the doors was damaged beyond belief. Even the painters we hired to do our house afterward couldn't effectively patch some of the gouges. Plus, the guys who delivered it kept making these little comments insinuating they expected a tip. We would have tipped them, anyway, but their commentary felt really slimy. Then, instead of two installers across a day and a half, as promised, it was one guy across three days, and he kept screwing up the install and we kept having to get him to come back to fix things, but where he would also make more egregious mistakes. He was so eager to get the job fucking done already and to never have to come back that he was in our house on Saturday night until 830pm. The first clue this guy was awful should have been early on when, as one of his first acts, he installed a doorknob on a bathroom door BACKWARDS, with the lock on the outside, and I had to point this out to him! And this guy was supposed to be a professional?? I mean, seriously, what the hell was this guy on?? And why was he on it while on the job?? There's more, but I don't want to write an entire book here. Suffice to say, this was not an isolated mistake. The install misadventure got so bad that we had to go to the store and request a replacement guy to finish the job, which the people in Doors at store #1961 on Elston made clear to us through their passive-aggressive horseshit that they were none too happy with us for the request. So much for "satisfaction guaranteed", although to be fair, I never have seen the words "Home Depot satisfaction guaranteed" all in the same sentence, or even the same paragraph. The second installer was better, but he still left mistakes unfixed, and he wouldn't swing back around to fix them unless we went through the store on it which, no thanks, we had no desire to deal with their attitudes anymore. We ended up paying extra to a punch-list guy outside the company to fix the errors, and even he couldn't fix some of them because the install was that terrible. While I will continue to buy the little things here, I would highly recommend you not got doors at Home Depot, or at least not at store #1961 on Elston. Pay a little more and get good quality doors from an actually-reputable doors company who have good installers. This store should probably either go out of the Doors business, or else find people who are good at it. read more

I remodeled my basement a few years ago, and my contractor and I bought everything at the Elston Ave. Home Depot. A few weeks ago, I wanted to buy a back door. I called Home Depot several times, but the phone system is not good, and I couldn't get through to the department. I came in and spoke to someone, but she didn't give me the correct information. I came back the following day to speak to a manager. His name is Prince, and he is truly a Prince. He told me that I would have a discount on the door to make up for the poor customer service that I had experienced. He also gave me his cell number. Ultimately, they didn't have the door that I wanted, and I called and told him that I had found what I needed at Menard's. He told me that I could pick out some things to make up for the lack of customer service. I came in a few days later, and got a whole lot of cleaning supplies! He kept telling me to take more! I was a 78 year old kid in a candy store! Prince is truly a Prince, and a smart manager. I do hope that they can improve upon the phone system. Ran into HD to find a specialty light bulb for my fridge. First time ever to have a burnt out bulb in a refrigerator. Couldn't find the desired bulb until an HD employee came to my aid. He immediately located the desired product and I was on my way out the door , product in hand , in less than ten minutes. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE! I stopped here Thursday afternoon. Whatever happened to customer service?!?! I was pretty much on my own trying to find several hanging baskets for our back deck/backyard. I could not reach several hanging baskets. No one was around to help me take them down. A very nice lady, and very tall, saw me struggling and offered to help take down the hanging baskets. They are now on sale for $6.88 but last year, at the exact same time, they were on sale for only $4.99 I was very disappointed that HD did not have many of their annuals marked way down. We are not far away from Labor Day! One would think HD wants to sell, sell, sell. Why not mark the annuals way, way down? Home Depot can still make a profit even at $4.99 per hanging basket. Doesn't HD want to eliminate their inventory? I purchased 3 fuschia wave petunia hanging baskets & 1 lavender mum. I spent $28 and change. This year I didn't do any gardening/planting. I usually create my own hanging baskets. I am a blue jeans, t-shirt and flip-flops kind of gal. I am definitely not a high maintenance lady. The last time I had a professional mani/pedi was in 1989. I prefer to get dirt under my fingernails, in the garden, than have them done professionally. LOL! I got my passion for gardening from my dad. He taught me the art of gardening as a young child. I have happy memories of helping my dad plant many beautiful flowers in the ground. We always enjoyed making our own containers and hanging baskets. My dad had a beautiful rose garden in Chicago. He still enjoys gardening. Unfortunately, he cannot grow roses in FL. The heat, humidity, mold and mildew is not good for roses. People in the neighborhood would stop by and ask if they could go in the backyard to look at his Rose Garden as well as other annuals and perennials. They would always ask my dad who does "your" landscape. My dad always smiled and said, "My daughter and I did all of this together." He was very proud of his Rose Garden. People would take pictures and selfies and sit on the benches and relax and enjoy some peace and quiet in our backyard. My Dad loved every minute of it! I must have had an eye for color and artistic creativity. To me, as an adult gardening is very therapeutic. It's still fun for me and very relaxing. As a child, it was lots of fun helping my dad in the garden. It was the only time I was allowed to get as dirty as I wanted to get! I enjoy gardening so much that I took courses at the Chicago Botanic Garden and obtained a certificate in landscape design. This year was a bit difficult for me to do any gardening due to ripped tendons in my left wrist. I spent the summer recovering from 3 fractured ribs, and a left wrist with excruciating pain. This is the reason why I decided to hit up Home Depot, August 15th. I could no longer stand to look at how bare my backyard and deck appeared. I love pops of vivid colors. Annuals provide lots of colors throughout the Summer and early Fall. I recommend the Home Depot if you are looking to replace any of your annuals that look leggy, sad or ugly. Many hanging baskets are no longer blooming about this time of year. I noticed other annuals and perennials are marked down ("on sale"), but not enough to get me to make additional purchases. Consumers today are trying to stretch their dollars. The Home Depot needs to realize they will end up throwing more than half of their inventory in the trash. Don't they want to sell their inventory? Aren't they in the business of making money? People will take inventory off their hands if they mark the inventory way, way, way down. It's mid-August. Their sale prices suck. For this reason alone, I rate the HD with 3 stars. Perhaps the HD prefers to throw away the inventory where it becomes compost. read more

I've come here for three years and always had a good experience. I started coming a lot more in the last year, bringing my mother with me when she moved to Chicago and we bought a house together. The staff is so helpful and on it, and just friendly in a relaxed, non-fake way. Shoutout to Kyna, who has graciously helped us with everything under the sun that we've had to deal with buying an old house... we've had a lot of stresses and coming here was never one of them. In fact, I like to bring my mom to this Home Depot in particular - we moved closer to a different one - because it makes her happy to talk to people she knows, and they always take the time to make sure we are getting what we need. The app reflects inventory that is never accurate and it's always a hassle to get help from any employee. Most of the staff seem like they're already being asked to much by breathing. Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY COUNTERTOPS FROM THE HOME DEPOT. The company they use, TCF, is truly awful. Our project was delayed for months, they lost pieces from our project and had to redo the whole thing. While doing so, they destroyed our recently renovated kitchen. The end result is so bad. Be sure to have the employee mark on the sheet how much fuel is in the truck before you use it, otherwise they may have you pay more than you should when you return the truck. I ordered an outdoor light to be delivered to my home. Home Depot says it was delivered but I did not get it. Home Depot won't replace or refund the light. They said they got a signature upon delivery. I asked to see it and they said actually, they didn't get a signature. The tracking software says it was out for delivery at 6:55 and delivered at 6:30. I pointed out that this would require a time machine and they still won't provide a refund. They told me to dispute it with my credit card company. read more

This is the only place nearby to return propane tanks and it's never quick or easy. You can't pay at the station, you have to go inside. Doesn't matter what time of day, there's never a short line to have the cashier process the return and give you the code. Once you get the code the cage never opens so you then have to go back inside to tell them it doesn't work. Then they never know what to do and spend five minutes trying to figure it out. Finally they call the person with the key who takes 15 minutes to come out and unlock it and give you a new tank. Minimum thirty minute ordeal every time. Sorry I interrupted your shift by trying to get in and out in a reasonable amount of time. Really appreciate the attitude. read more
