Our family tradition is to purchase our live Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving and decorate our home. At 6:00 pm on Black Friday we appeared at this Home Depot to purchase our tree and accessories. The garden center area of the store was empty of staff, save one young woman in a checkout booth engrossed with her cell phone. We chose a tree that we really weren't satisfied with. All of the trees seemed a bit dry and all were scattered about in a rather disorganized fashion. But, it was late and I decided to take the risk and hope the tree was okay. I carried the tree to the counter where the trunks are trimmed, laid it down and went to look for an employee. I found a very nice young women who produced a chain saw to cut the base. I went to the booth to pay for the tree and other items. The first young women set the tree outside on the curb near the booth. There was no netting on the tree as is common for customers to secure cut trees in or on their vehicles. After paying I went to find the young woman who helped with cutting the base. I asked if she could net the tree. "Oh, we're out of that netting stuff." I asked what we were supposed to do. Shrugged shoulders. I decided to take my chances tying the tree on top of my station wagon, so I looked for rope that is usually available for the job. Seeing none I went back to to the booth. The young woman enamored with her phone looked up. "Can you tell me where I can find rope or cord to tie the tree on the car?" She replied "I don't know anything about cords," and went back to her phone. Exasperated, I asked if this was the first Christmas tree they had sold today. She shrugged her shoulders and went back to her phone. After consulting with my wife I decided to just get a refund on everything and go somewhere else. I carried the tree back into the store and to the booth with the cell phone aficionado. "I'm just going to refund everything and go somewhere else". She pointed toward the entrance to the main store and said I would need to carry it all to customer service to get a refund. Then, back to her phone. I carried the tree into the main part of the store. My wife followed with the other items. We passed the first young woman who had helped before. I explained that things weren't working and I needed a refund. She suggested I go to the booth that had the cell phone girl. I replied that Cell Phone Girl was sending us to customer service. The look on her face mirrored my growing frustration. I lugged the tree through the store aisles to the customer service booth and joined the line. While standing in the customer service line (holding a tree!) no less than six Home Depot employees walked around me, totaling ignoring a man holding a tree. When I joined the line there were three stations open. Before I got to the front, two of the employees left the help stations to join another young employee sorting returned items. After 20 minutes I approached the front of the line. The lone customer service person yelled to me, "You should take that to the registers if you are ready to check out." I explained that I was returning everything and asked if a manager was available. "No, I'm sorry, they're in the back unloading a truck." After some head scratching the young employees figured out how to refund a Christmas tree and other items. Over an hour after entering the store our family departed with no Christmas tree. I understand that our country is in an employment crisis. In all my time in the store I didn't see anyone who looked to be over 25, in charge of anything, concerned about the customers needs, or caring at all about the reputation of the business. It is important to consider that this was a simple purchase from a major national retailer on one of the principal sales days of the year at an hour that should be prime business time. It is obvious that these employees are not trained, nor have they obviously been inspired to have any concern for their customers. I have done business with Home Depot for decades, but this will be my last visit to this Merriam location. read more

Unhelpful staff and at this location specifically from their customer service area. I was looking for an item that specifically stated that there are 3 in stock at the Merriam location and showed the staff member the page on their own website and the elderly lady didn't even want to look at my phone and simply said "we probably don't have it." Really? Then why does it say there are 3 in stock? A helpful staff member would look at the model # and check their inventory internally. I guess they are too busy staring into space to give any sense of customer service. I recommend going to another hardware store such as Lowes. read more

I used their in store pickup, they have lockers at the entrance. The customer service rep needs to unlock it for you but this makes life super easy. ! Definitely recommend shop to store. read more

Do not ever ever ever buy a mower or any large machinery from this place we bought a driving lawnmower paid for it and then they sent us an email the day before they were supposed to deliver it to tell us that they sold it to someone else. We went in they gave us a discount proceeded to tell us that they could sell us the floor model but they needed to fix the tire, they gave us a delivery date they sent us an email, no call no text to tell us that they tried to deliver it but no one was home. I was home all day and all night. We called again and they gave us another $300 off and said they would call us back we have not heard anything we're going to go over after work and just get a refund. This Hass to be the worst Home Depot I have ever dealt with. read more

I freakin' love Home Depot!!! Here are my tips to fallin in love with the big D: 1. Slow the F down. If you are one of those people who frantically run through the store because you can't find anything, it's because your moving too fast. SLOW IT DOWN. 2. Home Depot is a big store. Embrace it's freakishly large size. Because the store is so big it may seem like there is no one werking there. But I promise you, they are there. 3. Ask for help when you need it. On several occasions Paul in plumbing has saved my ass. He's made excellent product recommendations and offered expert advice. I owe to him my new main water shut off valve as well as my new (as of June) toilet shut off valve. Without his support, well, I suppose I would have had to call a plumber and paid big bucks. 4. Come prepared. Bring your old whatever: bolt, nut, screw, hose, handle, tile, valve. Bring the old busted one so you can be sure you're picking up the right part. 5. This is my most important tip to falling in love with the Big D. Seriously. And this one takes some zen type thinking, but if you can master this then you may also start "crossing off your to-do list" and get more done. So here it goes... YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE MULTIPLE TRIPS, maybe two, maybe four. OWN IT. ACCEPT IT. Get used to that FACT before you start your project. This way there are no surprises. I have a dirty secret. I love hardware stores. I don't know if it's the smell of lumber or smelly construction workers, but I could wander around Home Depot for hours. I don't really have a need for their garden center anymore since I moved into a condo, but there's still all the glorious aisles inside. Light fixtures, cleaning products, cabinet hardware, plumbing fixtures...you name it. The staff is always available and helpful, too. read more

It's Home Depot... If you've been to one, you've been to them all. This one is everything you expect it to be. If you've never been, well, they are going to have pretty much everything that you need. Lumber and building supplies, everything you need for home improvement, appliances, outdoor furniture & landscaping... All of it. Typically the prices of items are at the very least competitive if not as low as you will find. I'd say this is definitely the case with plants, etc from landscaping. Way cheaper than local nurseries (I love to support the local nurseries, but these prices are just SO good in comparison... Definitely less selection though, so there is that). They've got all your tools, paint, etc etc so on and so on. Basically anything you would need that isn't insanely specialized will be there. Finding it might be the most difficult thing but you can usually flag down an employee and they all seem to have a pretty good idea of where things are and can direct you where you need to go. In a battle of big box home improvement stores, Home Depot is JUST a touch lower quality than Menards (but Menards is run by a terrible owner who hates the environment, among other things, so there is that - also, none around KC to shop at anyway) but a rung higher in quality than Lowe's. All fairly indistinguishable but if you've spent some amount of time in each, you'd probably see the differences and agree. This location is easy to get in and out of, no parking issues. Seems a little smaller than some stores, but still all the same junk packed inside. read more

There's really not much to differentiate Depot from other big box stores of this type. Typical selections are available at stores like Lowes, Menards, and to a lesser extent, hardware stores like Ace. What I do like about Depot over the others though is the ability to find help on a variety of subjects. About a year ago or so, I was wanting to do some simple re-wiring of an outdoor pond pump, and the guy helping me took the time, drew me a picture...even gave me a small length of wire at no cost (I didn't need a whole package of wire, just a foot or so). That one act by one employee has kept me coming back to Home Depot for my home improvement needs. Today, we were doing a little shopping for a new fridge - and the gentlemen attending the appliances was friendly and informative, yet never pushy. Always helpful. The employees really seem to live the brand. Another reason we keep going back is the Home Depot credit card. I get coupons for projects every couple months as a card holder, and it makes me more likely to go back. All in all, probably my go-to home improvement store. read more

Being new homeowners, we have started spending a lot of time in hardware and home improvement stores. While I actually prefer the layout and products at a competitor's store, and though I honestly pretty much hate this type of store in general, I have to say that this Home Depot in particular has earned my 4 star rating. The reason? Each and every staff member we have ever interacted with has been friendly, helpful, and they actually know exactly where everything in the entire store is located! And for someone like me, who wants to get what they came for and get out as quickly as possible, the customer service this location offers goes a long way towards making my shopping experience as pleasant as possible. At the competitor store, I have found that not only do you have to ask multiple people where things are, but they generally misdirect you or have no idea. Couple that with painfully slow service, and no matter how much I like their products, I leave ready to tear my hair out. Not at this Home Depot, though! The other day when we asked a staff member where to find a particular door handle, he not only told us the aisle, but also how far along the aisle and on what side of the aisle we would find the handle...and he was spot on. It was a (pre) Christmas miracle. Another time we were looking at lawn mowers, and a staff member from way down the aisle saw us, came over to see if we needed help, and proceeded to answer all of the questions we had on which mower we should buy. After we picked one out, he helped my husband load it into the car, which was greatly appreciated. While I will never love the Home Depot (or any of its competitors), I do have to say that I very much appreciate the great customer service at this location...and obviously, I'll be back! read more

I love the Home Depot. They always have everything I need and it's clean and accessible. I really enjoy their selection of plants and outdoor garden items. They have great prices and a good selection, and if you find a product cheaper somewhere else, they will match it and beat it by 10%. The staff are always helpful and there's always someone by the front door asking if customers need help finding items. It's a nice touch that some other hardware stores don't do. I find it a little gimicky, but I think its their way of trying to actually work for their customers. I like it. The self checkout is my favorite. I don't have to waste time with a surly or over talkative cashier. I just get in and get out. Tools and plants in hand. Woohoo. read more

I have to take time to write a review and this is something that I rarely do! I had ordered a refrigerator and trying to pick one out was overwhelming to me. I had help from Jim Linton in the appliance department. Sadly, because I am in an older home, it didn't fit through my doorway. Not only did Home Depot take it back, but Jim filtered through all the options, found exactly what I needed and saved me money. But after 5 mins it becomes social hour, and why does the person spending all the time get $10 off their 59 bill and those who have been waiting get nothing off. As a contractor there early every morning to pick up supplies, its surprising to watch the lack of concideration this HD store has for its morning customers. Most customers in there at that early time are generally contractors as well. To only have the self-check out lane open and NO human line open is overwhelmingly frustrating. The staff manning the self check out area try hard to not make eye contact and portray absolutely no real work ethic. They just as well talk to each other than do their job. I am not in this store other than early morning, and if possible to avoid this location in the morning, I do. I've found that if I'm headed south, the 151st/I-35 store is worth starting my day out better. read more

Home Depot has a reputation for bad customer service. During this visit I interacted with 3 employees in about 20 minutes, and they were all incredibly informed, helpful, and nice. I don't know if Home Depot is intentionally working on their customer service reputation or if I just ran into the best Home Depot employees ever- but this was a very pleasant trip to the 'Po. I went for three things and bought two for good prices. The third I know is about $5 cheaper at Ace Hardware and isn't a necessity, so I skipped that. read more

The paint department staff were quite helpful. Lots of stuff in the aisles as they restock the shelves.

I bought two pieces of plywood and both had to be cut to the same dimensions. I figured it would be easier to cut there, with their saws, than at home with two crappy saw horses and a circular saw. So I asked the guy for help with cutting them. That is a service they offer for free. One was cut short and one was cut too long. You would think someone working in a lumber yard would know how to read a tape measure. Fortunately I had enough plywood to cut new pieces at home with my two crappy saw horses and a circular saw. I order a lawn mower on line for pick up. 8 hours later I still have not heard from them to pick it up. I went on line and canceled the order. 3 days later I went in to store and bought the mower and took it home. The next day I had been charged twice for the mower. Once for the online cancelled mower. And for my in store purchase. I called several times and waited on line for over 22 minutes. They assured me the money would be refunded to my account. We went to rent the staple gun thing to install our wood floors. In addition to being friendly, Scott was also very helpful, inquisitive as to what we knew/didnt know/needed to know, and funny. I love this Home Depot because I can get all the help I need without feeling like an idiot. We came in yesterday looking for a toilet and an associate named Tommy helped is shop around and told us what we needed to measure on our toilet at home to ensure we got the right model (we had absolutely no idea what we were doing). We came back later with the information we needed and Tommy remembered us, offering additional assistance and making sure we felt confident with the installation steps. All the employees there really go above and beyond to be helpful. It's always hard going to a hardware store as a clueless female but I feel super comfortable in this store! read more

This store was terrible yesterday. All I needed was two 2"X3" aluminum downspouts for guttering. They only had five in the bin, one was smashed, three were coming apart at the seam, and one was in the wrong bin (it was plastic). I called it to a manager's attention and he seemed to care less, says guttering is out of season, seriously? He said they only get it once a month, but I was welcome to special order it. I told him that wasn't necessary, I would just go to Lowe's and buy it (I did). Customer service here is terrible. read more

I decided to use Home Depot as a one stop shop to renovate my kitchen. It's been a disaster, from installers damaging my walls to contractors not showing up. The renovation started on April 28 and I'm still trying to get this completed correctly. The store manager, Bruce Hovey, came out several weeks ago to get things right and I'm still waiting. Don't USE HOME DEPOT unless you want to be disappointed. At this point, I just want my money back and all of their crap out of my home. read more

Beware Beware Beware Home Depot window install program: planned to buy an Anderson 100 Single Casement Window (18 x 38) at Home Depot and also get it installed thru them. Both local people at Merriam ks store and the guy who came out and measured were competent and good to work with. BUT when I got my install price it showed 1477.50 to install one window. This generated many questions since the bid sheet only gave that one figure:does it include the window? upcharge for 2nd floor install, insullation? etc etc. So I called the "Sales Mgr- at 913 554 7569 but did not get thru -immediate "unable to complete call-pls try again later then it disconnects--then I called the guy who measured and asked him if this was a good price. He told me he did it twice on the HD program and it came to that amt. I had the same questions and immediately called the 800 home depot line who connected me to the window dep. customer servicet., They said I should call the guy who measured again since they did not know the whys etc. I think this is a crazy bid and will avoid Home Depot in the future (might even dump my stock). I can't waste anymore time on this...very poor followup...just want the bid eplained and tell them that is a crazy price for one window. If they didn't want the job all they had to do is say so...one install for one window. read more

I was having furnace problems and it was important I get a new filter so it didn't run all night without one. Walked into the store and was approached by an employee followed by an assistant manager and told the store was closed. Looked at my watch and it was 2 minutes after 9 pm. I explained that I really needed a single filter and he told me all the registers were closed even though there were clearly customers in the store. Luckily for me Lowe's in Roeland Park was open until 10 and so I was able to get my filter. I'm done with that Home Depot. read more

Wrong Dimensions: Beware of sale on 4ft treated pickets for fence. I purchased 120 and headed back to my house to complete the fence project. After attaching about 50 pickets, I discovered they were not uniform length. Some were 48", others were 49.5" and some even 51". I called Home Depot and they offered to trim them to proper length if I removed all and brought them back in to their store. Needless to say, I removed and properly cut them myself. Where is your quality control Home Depot? Do you have any idea how much time (money) I lost because of this? I will easily pay a few cents more next time with a different merchant to avoid this problem. (Have picture showing multiple lengths in a single bundled purchase). read more
