Very disappointing experience with recent policy changes at Home Depot in Vernon Hills. I've been a loyal customer and contractor for years, but the new return policies are terrible. They make it extremely difficult to return merchandise that's only slightly past the return date -- even when it's unused and in perfect condition. The staff and store managers seem to have no authority or flexibility to help customers in any way. It's frustrating that Home Depot is becoming so rigid and unwilling to work with loyal customers and contractors. Very poor policy decisions -- disappointing to see such a decline in customer service. Better service from local lumberyard and nearby home stores. read more

I was shopping here recently and I injured my arm pulling a lumber cart. A few minutes after this happened, the store owner approached me and accused me of faking it. He said I was "faking it because it was hot outside". I don't know what he meant by that remark but the manager was rude, patronizing, did not care about me and made me feel very uncomfortable. I did although appreciate the lady standing by the checkout who did care for me. I will not be going back to this store and neither should you. read more

What a terrible experience. For starters, I needed to replace my dryer. I took the serial number from my current dryer and brought it with me to order a similar unit. Turns out. I was sold a unit that was very much inferior. When they delivered it the totally screwed up the insulation. They disconnected the washing machine and the washer was flooding my basement. I called the customer service department and was told someone would be out the next day to fix the problem. no one showed up. I called again and was told it would take a few days for someone to show up. it took 5 calls to get someone to finally show up. when they did, they had an order to pick up the dryer! Seems the first installers had no clue what they were doing. I had to take a day off work to straighten everything out. A total screw job from Home Depot. Never again! read more

First of all, save your sanity if you can and do not go on a weekend. I have to say I have come to the Home Depot on a weekend and just wish I had actually stayed at home. That said I did come during the week and had awesome customer service. I had to buy a bunch of different lumber to fix my back deck and the person helping me could've been more friendly, offered me lots of tips after I asked and stacked up everything to get it out front. I also had a lot of little things to pick up in different departments, and I found someone who actually walked me through motor to the store to find what I needed. From a new cage to cover my dryer vent to changing out the hardware on one of my doors. I think the key if you're looking for good service it's just not show up when they're 50 million people there. So if you can get in there before work starts because they open at like 6 AM in the morning, or go after work you'll be doing yourself a huge favor. read more

Went in for a return at customer service and surprise surprise, despite the recording on loop stating that safety is that faces must be covered and the signs posted throughout the entire store, masks are not enforced. What made it even worse? When a Caucasian man is in the store without his face covered and even conversing with multiple employees at Customer Service, not one peep from any of the workers. But the moment a person of color is doing the same thing, ALL HANDS ON DECK! *Sniff*Sniff* You smell that? What's that smell? Kinda smells like white privilege. To add to the matter, bringing this to the attention of their Customer Support, they just really didn't give any strong impression that this matter was going to be taken seriously. There was no sense of concern from their end whatsoever. Customer safety is supposed to be prioritized and enforced for all people, not just some. Why is it so hard to find a place outside of a hospital that actually strictly enforces and prioritizes peoples' safety? Is it really asking for that much? Sheesh! read more

The service provided by Linda in Garden is seamless. She is always friendly, helpful, and honest. She provided great insights to arborvitae's and care. I have seen so many customers come in looking for her by name and after experiencing her service I understand why she has a fan base. Thank you for everything. Don't let Home Depot lie to you like they did to me!! I bought a $7,000 front entry door from them, they said if I gave them the measurements for the door and they are wrong, it is on me; if our guy comes out to measure and it is wrong, it is on them. Yah right!! Not only is the door the wrong measurement, the holes in the door frame don't line-up with the deadbolt and the door latch. Their answer to me, find someone to make it fit!!! Unbelievable bad service, you have been warned. I will never go there again, hello Menards, Lowes and ACE. So sorry I cheated on you with Home Depot, I have learned my lesson. read more

Over the years, I have spent thousands of dollars at Home Depot, and most of it at this store. Much of it because they promise that they will make things right if they go wrong. I have not returned much. A couple things that come to mind are a few boxes of extra Pergo we bought to be sure we had enough to finish (the sales person recommended we do this) about 6 years ago, and last summer, a hammer that dented when we used it. Today, I was appalled that they refused a return of a $10 fig tree that I bought last year. The fig, which came in a 9 inch box and was less than 5 inches inside, did not take. It is still under HD's return policy (1 year for perennials) but "Maggy" decided that it did not qualify for a return because "the stick was lacking the root". I explained to her that HD sold me a stick with a few hairs attached to it, and that when I pulled it out, that's exactly how it looked - it lost the hairs. Maybe the root stayed in the ground. She said that she didn't think so, and that she needed to see a picture. I asked, a picture of what? She said "a picture of the plant", which sounds like that part of the training was not well explained to the employees - how would a picture help Maggy could no explain, but she wanted one. I asked to speak to the manager. "Gary" did not want to come to the returns desk, I suppose that a $10 plant is not worth his while, but he sided with Maggy that a plant that is still under return policy is not actually returnable because they don't like how it looks. I came home and cancelled my HD credit card. They issued me one under the false pretenses that this would make things even easier with HD. Even that was hard. The lady tried really hard to get me to talk to HD customer service so they could escalate my complaint. But why would I want to do that. It's just a $10 plant. read more

An alright Home Depot. Situated in a more busy plaza with Sam's Club, restaurants, and other stores -- the traffic to get in and out of this location is surprisingly easy with the logical parking layout. The store itself is fairly large, with a good assortment of items -- although not as many holiday items as I've seen in other stores nearby. Service was minimal as I was never approached by any associates during my visit -- although fortunately I already knew what I was searching for. Overall, not a particularly good or bad location. It's convenient and has most home improvement items you need at reasonable prices. read more

Nothing really exciting or extra special to report as far as my purchases are concerned, but I have to give a huge high five to Home Depot for having the nicest bunch of helpful and interested-in-being-there employees. Hubby and I were immediately greeted and asked if we needed help finding something. We did, actually. Instead of being told to go to Aisle 3, we were taken there. And right before we headed out, I ended up needing one more thing, and a guy with a cane happily led me all the way around the store and to the back with pride. Honestly, a really terrific Home Depot. I happened to notice they also had a few Christmas trees remaining, but not a huge selection, so get there now if you need to pick one up! read more

I went in to buy some patio furniture for my small apartment balcony. I greatly underestimated the size of the box the set I bought came in. Not only did the box not fit in my car, two larger pieces didn't fit individually when they were removed from the box. One of the customer service representatives came out to my car to help without my even asking. He must have spent 30 minutes helping me to remove all the pieces from the box. When we realized the only option was to tie the larger pieces to the roof of the car he expertly did so. Everything made it in one piece to my apartment, and my car didn't even get scratched. He couldn't be nicer, is very knowledgeable about their products, and is detail oriented. Most importantly, he is responsive but never feels pushy. Twice in one week I attempted to buy Behr paint at this Home Depot. On Saturday, there were three people behind the counter and only one actually helping customers. I was next in line, but the one person behind the counter ignored me and helped the man behind me. HELLO??? I decided to leave and went back today. Again, I was next in line (and there were three people behind me, and again, the one clerk assists the person at the end of the line. I said loudly, "I believe I am next," but I was ignored. I then asked, "is there a line here??" And the clerk answered, "I don't know...whatever." Well, whatever to Home Depot. I guess they ignore women. Thinking about a major appliance purchase at the Home Depot? While they may be #1 in appliance sales, consider this: In Lake County (and other areas I'm sure), Home Depot exclusively contracts out all major appliance delivery and installation services to Linn Star Transfer Inc. This means if there is a problem--and with Linn Star, chance are there will be a problem--Home Depot will do whatever they can to wash their hands of the issue and pawn you off to their sub-contractors. If you suffer any property damage--which is highly likely with the less-than-professional Linn Star Transfer personnel--they will pawn you off to Sedgwick. While Sedgwick has a poor reputation in their own right, they in turn will likely tender your damage claim down to Linn Star Transfer Inc. Think you can get any assistance from the store where you purchased the major appliance? Nope, not their department... During a sale, you might save a few bucks with the Home Depot, but if something goes wrong, you'll wish you hadn't bothered. You don't get "more saving, more doing" at Home Depot. You get: More aggravation, more hassle. read more

This review is during the pandemic so my review is reflecting covid safety protocols. Two employees within 5 minutes of me entering the store were not wearing a mask at all. Two customers also walked in without a mask and no employee at the entrance to enforce it while there's a state mandate. The store has a duty to keep customers safe during these crazy times and they clearly failed. Not all employees though. Many were still wearing masks, so they are not included in this review. I can't wait for this to not be an issue and hate to complain over it, but this store needs to do better. read more

Good selection, decent prices! I like going to Home Depot. I'm not sure why, maybe it's because my parents were constantly remodeling things when I grew up so I learned about all sorts of random things. I can install windows, paint, drywall, and other various things that are certainly handy to know how to do. So I love looking at the tools, paint, flooring, and other random cool things that come out now and then. Anyway, I stop in here from time to time, mostly buying houseplants and for various household items. I spend way too much money because I always find cool things to buy! Prices are decent too, and they always have a good variety and plenty of items in stock. Service is pretty good too. Like the time this summer where I declared an all out war on spiders trying to sneak into my apartment and went in for advice, I walked out with a ton of bug killer, spider traps and window insulating stuff to keep them out. The guy showed me exactly where it was and even helped me to the register with it all since I didn't have a cart. The only thing I really don't like is their weird entrances, they seem very far apart and there is no winning parking in one spot or another, you're going to have to schlep it all over the place. read more

Today we tried purchasing a barbecue grill. My daughters had purchased it for Father's Day. Home Depot assembled the grill. The vents to the LP were malaligned. The entire ignition assembly was missing. The wires leading to the electric start were improperly installed. Basically you had a central line of LP gas being ferried into the grill it could've had detrimental effects. I would use extreme caution when buying a product from this place that they assembled. read more

I attempted to return a $12 item without a receipt and was dutifully told that even though the item appeared on my Home Depot credit card. I was informed that I had too many returns without a receipt even though I usually use my HD card. I tried to reason with an assistant store manager. I didn't get far so I asked to speak to the store manager who wasn't there. I asked for a call back. Its been 3 days and no call. Guess they don't want my business....and I'm a contractor. The boyfriend and I got sucked into listening to a representative talk to use about refacing our kitchen cabinets. First of all, I just bought my house last year and definitely do not have any money to spend on any renovations whatsoever. Nevertheless, we felt bad for the guy so we listened to the presentation and had someone come out to our house. Now, I live in a townhouse with a pretty small kitchen. The total cost for the kitchen cabinet refacing was almost $8000.00. And, that doesn't even involve changing any countertops, back splashes, etc. Yuck. Needless to say, we did not sign up for that renovation job. Other than that, this place isn't too bad. I like the self-checkout. We haven't had any issue finding what we need and we can usually get in and out. Customer service seems OK for the most part. read more

Shout out to amazing Home Depot assistants in Painting! I've been coming for supplies and paints for several months and always got everything I needed. And today, one of the assistant really shoved one of the most challenging tasks: to match a greyish-white color which I had in my living room. It took some time, but the result is amazing. I ordered something from homedepot.com for pickup in store. Within an hour I received a phone call from the store saying it was out of stock and they were very sorry. Less than 10 minutes later I got a second phone call from the store saying that they called around to other home depots and found my item. I had purchased a piece of wood and needed pieces cut. As soon as I entered the store I was greeted by Dave. He was extremely friendly and tried to assist me. I was then directed to Jason, who was extremely pleasant and friendly. Jim & Tom assisted Jason in cutting the wood to my specifications. It was a wonderful experience.
