Nice to have in the neighborhood. I have had my office down the street from this store for the past 8 years. It was not until the last 6 months that I really appreciated how convenient and helpful the store is. I started remodeling my office and found my self heading to Ace almost on a daily basis for one thing or another. Sometimes a small .50 items and other times a larger item like a snow blower. What ever I was searching for the staff has always been helpful. There was the one time I was attempting to direct connect my coffee maker to my kitchen water supply. After 4 visits the staff member suggested that I might want to take a picture of what I was trying to do and he would help me identify what I needed. I did what he suggested, took the picture, and the items he suggested and instructions he provided did the trick! This is a neighborhood store so they might not have all of the items of big box store. But there is something nice about being remembered by the staff...even if it is because I'm the guy who takes 2 or 3 times to get the items to complete a single task. read more

I really like to shop here at Olson's Ace Hardware, I am always impressed by how professionally their employees treated their customers from entering and checking out at their store. All of them are so friendly and helpful, they are always willing to assist or guide their customers. They have the best and great customer service for me. Their store is so huge, clean, and nice. They also have big parking lots and you can freely walk around and enjoy the ambiance of their location. Their location is so easy to go to, easy to find, you can go anytime like early morning, late, or even evening shopping. But I will recommend to go there early for you to avoid long lines and that time the place is not so crowded. When it comes to their products, you will be satisfied and will definitely shop there again. They have so lots of variety and selection, all of their items has a reasonable prices, and you can buy everything you need in such a fair prices. You will save a lot of money here compared to other Hardware around the City. They also have good deals and promos. Be careful! It seems that this Ace (in particular) and other Ace stores in general like to indulge in price swapping and misleading prices. The price of many 'non-Ace brand' items are displayed lower than the actual price on the sales floor, only to be rung up 'higher' at the regular (higher) price at the register. If you purchased an item at the artificially lowered price you saw on the display, you would most certainly be surprised to find it rings out at a much higher price at the register. Most of the time, the higher price IS the actual price on the website, but not always. In any case, that's actually not the point. The point is that an artificially lowered price lures you into making a purchase you might not have normally made. The usual excuse from the store manager is that there was a 'pricing error', but it happens ALL THE TIME at this store (Waukegan, Genesee & Grand). For big-ticket items, you may want to snap a photo of the price with your phone for later reference at the register, and save your receipt. Better yet, skip all the hassle and just shop at another, more reputable store, or Amazon. Oh, and if you are a minority individual, they will follow you (clumsily and quite obviously) no matter how long you may have shopped at the store. Let the buyer beware. read more

This place always makes me feel like a dope for going to the big boxes a little nearer to me. Just got a toilet repair part, the right part, from these folks after spending too much time talking to someone at a big box who's advice was wrong. Not just wrong but sort of dismissive. This isn't the first time that adding 20 minutes of travel time would have saved a 1/2 day on a project. While I was in the store I heard the manager send a customer to nearby locksmith for a key he couldn't duplicate and I saw a cashier go out of her way to help and elderly lady check out. Really like this Olson's Ace Hardware, they are so convenient and worth visiting again and again. They always have exactly what I am looking for, also they have so incredible customer service, their staff is helpful and knowledgeable. All of them are so accommodating, they are always willing to assist and guide all of their customers everyday. Their store is so big, they have big parking lot, and their location is so to find. Their place is always clean, organized, and decent. No wonder why lots of their customers are going back again and again, also all of them are so comfortable while doing shopping at their store. Chris in paint gave me the best deal, mixed my paint from the can, I asked for a painter referral, took me to the bulletin board for a painter he said this guy is in the store a lot. Cute little neighborhood hardware store; like any good local store, they stock a few specialty items the big boys don't... but the prices reflect a little bit of the cost of local convenience. The staff was friendly -- even joking after the third trip back for little items(apparently the square drive bits I'd gotten a "deal" on elsewhere were made out of pot metal and semi-sweet chocolate chips.... grrrrrrr...). They didn't have much in the stove pipe line (yeah, another stove project) and we had to head to Gurnee. That said, they did have a nice selection of cutting wheels for my 4.5 inch angle grinder that I did NOT find at the Big Box DIY stores. The store was clean, well-lit and organized; and there's free parking across the street to the north. read more

I was the first customer in the store at 7:55. Instead of telling me to wait they welcomed me into the store and were ready to help. It gave me a good feeling when I asked questions about my needs for several home projects. Every need was answered with help choosing the right product for the problem. First Juan M was on the job suggesting and helping me find where I could go in the store. It's a small store compared to so many that have lots of "stuff" but no one to help you find it. Then I headed for the checkout counter and there was Maria on the job. She wasn't spending time wandering she was so helpful helping me effectively while Juan ran to get "one more thing" I needed. Ace is the place.. Love the downtown Waukegan Ace.. Store has plenty to free parking and the staff is knowledgeable on all projects i have worked on.. Plus they do not push the most expensive solution.. I live closer too a big box store but Ace is the place. read more
