I was out snowblower shopping and had previously seen an ad for a unit they had. I stopped by to check it out. I didn't buy, but I was greeted and treated well by a "regular" employee. A short bit later, I believe it was the president/owner, came out to talk. We kicked around some ideas, and I was on my way. No pressure sales tactics. I took a card, and said I may be in touch. I appreciated that treatment. I can't speak to their service, but so far, I was treated well and would consider coming back if I needed anything. read more

First off, I don't know why this place has such negative reviews, you have to know at least a little bit about what you're in there for, they can't know EVERYTHING. Second, Brian is the man! Two other guys attempted to find a snow blower part on Cub Cadet's online shop manual (man, that thing needs a rework) and they couldn't find it despite me knowing the part name (see why it needs a rework). Brian knew exactly what the part did and was able to find it on the site , no problem. Once again, I blame the online parts manual more than any person. I have to say, I have bought many EGO products from Homesteaders Madison and Homesteader Richland Center. I love the customer service and I have not found it to be a problem at all! I feel a part of the family atmosphere they have there. Do I have to wait while staff are talking to other customers, sure! That's not a problem to me! In fact, I see that as a positive. Being busy can also mean that they are great at their job! I would hope that if I was there first, they would help me first. I have been in the store when they have had just a massive of influx of customers. It happens and not everyone can be helped instantly. They always acknowledge me and say, we will be with you shortly, to which I typically respond, no rush. I have also dropped units for repair at both locations and have found that they are done in a very timely manner. They may reach back out to you asking if a part purchase is okay before just doing, and as long as you communicate back to them, they will do it and get it back to you. Sometimes I need to wait on a part, but that is not on Homesteaders, that's on the supply shortage, or the company that sends it. Overall, I love the staff and I love the service I have received here. I think that patience is key and is so different than what we expect at times. Thank you Homesteaders Crew!! read more

Terrible service and treatment by owner. Took mower in for service, they picked it up and dropped it off which was nice however none of the service we paid for was actually completed. Blades were supposed to be sharpened and were not. Deck was supposed to be cleaned and wasn't. Battery was replaced but they never secured it so it fell out while mowing. Asked them to adjust the parking brake and now the mower spins in circles when the brake is set. Called to voice my concerns. Nes was receptive but said it was up to the owner Rick. Rick was incredibly dismissive and rude. Told me there was no way he new what was going on and would have to call back. Its been a week and no return call read more

Sadly we had a terrible experience. Rick is a nice enough fella, willing to share his time and knowledge ahead of the sale. Sadly, his customer service skills need a LOT of work after the sale. I think the problem is that everything seems to fall on Rick's shoulders and since he runs two stores, that's simply too much for one man to handle well. In any event, we spent roughly $4000 on a robotic mower, 1/5th of that went to Rick and his family for installation. Many mistakes were made, which is fine - things happen. Alas, apologies NEVER materialized and solutions either never materialized or were minimal at best. Personally, I'm generally more interested HOW one handles mistakes and not the mistakes themselves. In this regard, Rick & Company failed spectacularly. What mistakes? Border wire fence was improperly installed, leaving a huge dead zone in the middle of the yard (months later, still no resolution), wire installed too close to the house (I even heard him state multiple times during installation, "Mother! The wire is too close!" - he clearly didn't realize we could hear everything from our living room), wire does not fully follow our property line, he left the installation of a connect kit to me even though it was supposed to be installed by the reseller (warranty is now void, thanks), connect kit and promised sign was not delivered on installation day (nor the day promised), location of all the wire splices were not written down and sometimes not even divulged, and so on and so on. The whole situation was unfortunate. I prefer to support local businesses and, like I said earlier, Rick is a nice enough fella. Alas, his customer service skills left a LOT to be desired. After this nightmare, we'll be dealing with a reseller in Sauk City because we've completely lost confidence in Rick and his businesses. Caveat emptor. read more

Anyone who wrote a bad review about The Homesteader's Store has failed to realize the enormous depth and breadth of product knowledge that president, owner, and front man Rick possesses. Although he has a great staff, Rick's attention to detail and attempt to give hands on personal service stretches him thin at times. But I can assure you, I would not have spent over 6k on lawn equipment without a thorough understanding of what I was buying. If you are looking for lawn or farm tractors or lawnmowers, Rick can be your best asset in making a difficult decision easy. read more

If I could rate with no stars, I would! Terrible experience! We were in the market for a riding lawnmower. We stopped in the store several times and spoke with the owner, Rick. Our numerous calls were never returned, which was bad enough, but the final straw came during our last visit when Rick escorted us outside to look at a mower and almost immediately stepped back in to the store to deal with another customer. We waited for Rick to return to us for over twenty minutes. He never returned . We eventually walked back inside and found Rick dealing with another customer. We told Rick that we were leaving and he barely acknowledged that we were standing there. We immediately drove over to Middleton Power Center and bought a great John Deere riding mower and received OUTSTANDING and respectful customer service. read more

We went with our son to purchase a lawn mower for his first home at the Madison location. Rick was wonderful! He took the time to understand my son's needs and explained in detail how to mow, care for the mower, and many other tips. He is a born teacher and we feel confident that if our son needs help, he will get it from Rick. Note that Rick really is hands on with customers in the shop. His goal is excellent service to the one facing across the counter from him. He is honest about letting people on the phone wait if he has a person in front of him. That is great service! We feel confident in his knowledge about any of the machines he sells. read more

Ripoff. My lawnmower wouldn't start. They said bad gas you need a new caeburetor, "because you can't clean out carburetors" for $130. They tried to charge me $60 just for looking at it. Farm and Fleet cleaned out the carburetor and charged me $30. Good as new. Don't go to this place. read more

Purchased a Toro Super Recycler Lawn Mower today. I called initially looking for a different model, which was actually more expensive, but Rick called me back since he was helping another customer, and took the time to talk about the pros and cons of the mower I was initially looking for. When I described how I would use the unit a small percentage of the time, and my 11 year old son a majority of the time, he recommended the unit which I ended up purchasing, and described the reasons why he would recommend it. Including a better overall mower considering my son would be using it, and he mentioned that there was a factory rebate bringing the cost of the mower I purchased lower than the one I had initially called about. By the time I arrived at the store, the mower was fully assembled, Rick showed me the details of the mower, and we loaded it up and I was off, all within about ten minutes. As a small business owner myself, I appreciated the customer service, the time that was taken, and the concern for my valuable time. Will do business with again for my other landscape needs and service needs in the future. read more
