It's was the end of the day but Kramer didn't mind. He welcomed us all with a big smile and how can I help attitude. I really appreciated that because I was already feeling bad for sliding in so late. They had cases full of cheese, deli meat, chicken, steak, and pork with a refrigerated/freezer section as well. After visiting I learned Grand Butchers is a full service shop offering all natural beef, pork, chicken, lamb, and veal. Affordable organic, grass-fed, and pastured products with an emphasis on made-in-Michigan. Besides custom cuts and a full display cases they have a fully stocked deli and offer many grocery items. We got a bag of BBQ chips to enjoy on the ride home.

It was about $20 per pound, which is certainly better than any restaurant pricing so I was happy. I don't buy a ton of meat so I'm not sure if that pricing is in line with other stores, but I wanted to support this local shop right in my own neighborhood. They had a large selection of other cuts of meat, chicken, and packaged items like crackers, sauces, dips, gifts, and more. I'm definitely coming back to Grand Butchers the next time I need a more special cut of meat. Love the large parking lot and I was in and out in no time.

Breakfast is served anytime they're open, which is cool since it's my favorite meal. Nate and I were in the area running an errand a few months ago, so we stopped in for lunch. We got the bratwurst sandwich to split. It was quite hefty, with two thick bratwurst patties, sauerkraut, and stone ground mustard on a pretzel bun. It's served with fries that are seasoned and almost beer battered. I think I was expecting it to be amazing with how awesome it looked, so I was a bit disappointed when it fell a little flat. It was just really lacking in flavor for me. The patties were juicy and cooked nicely, they just didn't have a lot of flavor. Then even the sauerkraut seemed like it was almost just braised cabbage, not a lot of that zingy sour flavor I like. I'd like to try a burger next time, or maybe breakfast - I saw a photo of the corned beef hash that looked so good! The two employees working were super friendly and kind, and one came out and checked on us as we were eating. If I lived closer I'd definitely go back soon to try something else. It might be a bit before I get back to Dokl's but I'd love to try the Cajun blue cheeseburger!

There is a lot of foot-traffic in the market, but ordering has never been difficult and the service is typically decent. Over the years, I've been back to Carver's multiple times and they have upped their game since my first visit. The burgers have been great and the fries are particularly good. Their menu changes with their inventory, but there are always burgers and good sandwiches. The French Dip, Pulled Pork and Reubens have been standouts. This is now my go-to for lunch when the family stops at the Downtown Market.

Carvers has an actual kids menu. I don't think any other food stall in the market has a kids menu, so that's a bonus. The kids' menu includes the standard kid fare: chicken tenders, grilled cheese, a hot dog, a cheeseburger. That was enough variety for my children, who picked a grilled cheese and cheeseburger. All of the kids' meals are served with fries. We also got steak fries, which I was told were "very good." OK! The steak fries were what you'd imagine them to be: fries topped with chopped pieces of steak, topped with white cheese sauce. I was impressed by Carvers ready-to-eat offerings in their refrigerated case. They had stuffed baked potatoes, ready-to-grill asparagus, cole slaw, egg rolls, and even elote salad (which is labeled as street corn salad). Lots of delicious-looking foods ready to take with you.

This was perfect as I was going on a camping trip and figured I could get some snacks and/or brats etc. at Lewandoski's. The outside of the market is cute and cheerful, and I was greeted right away when I came in. One of the owners told me about the history of the shop (they've been open in the same location for 100 years!) and pointed out some of their products. He even gave me a sample of their kraki, a cured meat that is delicious. I love that they have everything you need for a BBQ - meat, buns from local bakeries, condiments (lots of mustards), and more. I bought some hot links, kielbasa dogs, buns, pretzels, focaccia made by Wealthy Street Bakery, and some kraki dip. It was only about $30 after the discount which was awesome! I'm so glad I finally visited this NW side staple and look forward to going back again soon.
