Visited the Hoot this week for dinner hoping to catch one of the ethnic menus we had heard about. Our server told us it was Americana and then walked away. Went for brunch and I highly recommend the vegetable omelet and the lemon ricotta pancakes. The service was top notch and I love the self service coffee bar where you can pick your own mug. My 5th visit to the Hoot was more disappointing than delightful. I brought three friends to try the Hoot after sharing my good experiences in the past. We went this Sunday for brunch and were told the wait for food would be 40 minutes despite having a reservation. Looking around the restaurant, there were empty tables, so they were not at capacity. Making the best of the situation we all ordered four cider donuts to take the edge off of the wait. The donuts, usually perfectly done, were overdone. But any warm donut is a good donut, right? What came next was my Medium Rare Hoot burger cooked Well Done. Clearly, there are problems in the kitchen. Our waiter, while nice, wasn't really interested if our food was good or not, and the comments around the table were that the food was fine... I looked at their website to send an email just to let them know our experience before writing a review, but, there was no contact information other than a phone number, and they are only open 3x a week. Looking here, I see many similar reviews. Sad that another favorite is losing its touch. read more

My family and I came to celebrate Father's Day while on vacation, and unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing. We were turned away because we did not have a reservation, despite seeing that many tables were empty throughout the restaurant. As we looked around, numerous guests were already seated and being served food, which made the situation even more confusing. What made the experience worse was the way it was handled. The staff member we spoke with was rude and dismissive, making us feel unwelcome rather than valued as potential customers. We completely understand that restaurants can have policies regarding reservations, especially on busy holidays, but there is a respectful and professional way to communicate that to guests. We were looking forward to celebrating Father's Day together, and instead we left feeling frustrated and disappointed. Had a reservation and seated quickly. The Asked the person seating us if they could put in an order for two Apple Cider Donuts? She seemed annoyed, but said she would. Forty minutes later when I asked her about the donuts, they finally arrived. They were worth the wait! Came to the table big, fluffy and covered with cinnamon sugar. Nice flavor and two donuts split between the five of us was perfect! The young waiter was very sweet and apologized for the wait to order. The brunch we ordered came out hot and tasty. The Buttermilk Pancakes with Blueberries were light and fluffy!! All the other dishes were equally good. This would be a five star review based on food alone, but the attitude when seated and the seemingly overwhelmed, but very nice waiter brings it to a four star. We actually stayed nearby so that we could visit The Hoot after reading so many wonderful reviews. This was the first week of August 2025 and they were open for dinner on Monday nights only, for industry workers. But we were able to secure a reservation far in advance. I can't imagine that any of the patrons on this night were industry workers, they appeared to be tourists like us. Except for 2 single seats at the bar where we wound up sitting after a shit show of where to put us. Sitting at the bar afforded us a front row seat of disfunction..I kid you not. It was like an ongoing act of blunders and then a wild thunderstorm blew through and everyone out front had to come inside. The shining star was the poor bartender, I think Cabot ? Who tried his best to keep up with the drinks and the problem with orders (twice the wrong wine was ordered and new ones needed to be poured, 2 gin drinks were the wrong order, and needed to be remade and actually my husbands drink which was made perfectly, was off in some way, likely the vermouth. What the heck Hoot ? Stick with brunch food if that is what you do best. We watched as hoards of people were turned away, we watched folks waiting forever to order or get their food and the 2 single diners at the bar were locals and both of them received food that they did not order but were gracious enough to just keep what was put in front of them because they saw the bizarre flow of the evening and had already waited so long for their food. There are not really any places to dine in this little area, which is also the entrance to a college. Perhaps they should pivot and do casual take out and find a new niche that can work for their employees and for the local community. I'd stic to visiting for a weekday brunch read more

The Hoot continues its long tradition of inconsistent food and service. We arrived without reservation , the dining room was half full. We were seated promptly and waited 45 minutes for our food. I wouldn't object completely to the long wait , but the food that arrived was lackluster , and barely worth a mention here. I had eggs Benedict , eggs were overcooked and cold. My partner ordered the shasuka. This was an odd presentation with the eggs and sauce in a broiler dish , with pita bread and spinach on the side. I always assumed eggs and spinach , and sauce should all be together. Like so many restaurants I encounter in Maine , it's not that the food or service is that bad, but rather the fact that with minimal effort , it could be so much better. read more

I'm not sure what has happened to the Hoot, but I was there today and ordered the scrambled eggs breakfast. I had asked for them wet, which generally means that they will be soft scrambled. My grandson also ordered one scrambled egg and both of us received a disk of solid egg as dry as a bone on a plate. I did ask at the hostess if they had a new chef. This one really threw me for a loop. I gave two stars because the wait staff. was very good. read more

What a great breakfast surprise! We aren't brunch people, we are breakfast people so up until now we haven't been to The Hoot other than for dinner. But now....its a whole new story as they are opening at 7:00 am on some weekdays. Menu has egg classics and waffles, donuts, home made hash. Totally yum. This is a farm to table restaurant and everything really seemed to be home made. Coffee is self serve with a "select your mug" rack. I love this model because there are three different organic coffees at the coffee station and I can refill whenever I am ready. Breakfast items were all delish. Service was great. Fast and friendly. Nice tables, beautiful artwork by local artists adorn the walls. Parking was good but we were early. I have seen a full lot many times so be ready for a tight squeeze. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the host who let us know it would be just a few minutes and to please help ourselves to some coffee. They have a table setup with a variety of coffees and a bookcase filled with mismatching coffee mugs. This is brilliant and I wish more breakfast spots would copy. My husband and I split a couple of dishes because everything sounded too delicious to just attempt one taste. Both meals rose to the occasion. I believe they change out their menu with seasonal flavors. We enjoyed fresh blueberry pancakes and honeybun french toast. Everything was fresh and I don't think we left even a drop on our plates. The restaurant itself is quaint and feels almost barn-like on the inside. It's very open with tall ceilings. There is an outdoor seating area as well. read more

Service, ambiance and food 5 stars. We recently had a fabulous Middle Eastern dinner. Ordered the lamb with Orzo... mouth watering with incredible taste snd texture, falafel (Best ever and as a New Yorker of the Jewish persuasion I've eaten a lot of falafel) was incredibly moist. The accoutrements that went with it were outstanding and tasty as well. The three of us shared those two entrées as well as the beet salad which was scrumptious. The cocktails were fabulous... We enjoyed the margaritas which were fruity, flavorful and refreshing . For dessert, we shared the chocolate Babka . Don't tell my Bubbie that it was even better than hers. The only disappointment is that they close for the season, and that's what makes the place extra special for us . See you next year ! read more

This is a great spot. Travelling through the area and found this place and were lucky enough to get a table on a Sun around noon. They had seating on the patio outside (which looked inviting) and comfortable spots inside as well. My bride ordered the North African Green Shakshuka ($15) and enjoyed the dish but thought it was a little too watery and should have been served in a bowl so the pita wasn't wet/soggy. I ordered the Smoked Salmon Omlete ($17) and it was a great choice. It's a very chill atmposhere and they do a great job creating a comfortable dining experience. After one negative experience here, I had become disillusioned, but clearly it was just an off day and not indicative of this restaurant overall. When we return this year, Service was fantastic and attentive, and the food was just as wonderful as ever. We made reservations and were seated quickly. The restaurant was cute and very clean. Tables were spaced well. It was odd that there were so many hostesses, servers, runners for the number of tables. Lots of workers were standing around. The service was ok. Our sever was very nice, but there were multiple people helping us, but we still had to wait a long time to order drinks and for our food to get to our table. The food was not worth the price in my opinion. I ordered shrimp scampi. The shrimp were small and overcooked. The portion was very small. My husband ordered the fajitas. The portion was small for the price and the tortillas, salsa and guacamole were store-bought quality. The veggies were undercooked. First time here. First weird thing was that when we walked in, it wasn't even half full and the hostess sat us at a tiny two-top in the middle of the room, when there were several four-tops open by the windows. Not a big deal, just kinda weird. We sat there for about 10 min before the waitress came to take our drink order. We wanted iced tea. The menu is very vague about the flavors of the tea, and instead makes a big deal of the brand of the tea. I ordered "green" tea. It took another 5-10 min before it arrived. The waitress dropped them off and then turned to leave. I had to stop her and ask if we could order. Mind you, it was not busy, and we had already been sitting there 20min. Again, not a huge deal but kinda weird. The menu only had breakfast items in spite of it being 12:30pm. Apparently they only serve brunch, dinner occasionally but never lunch. I ordered the one thing that wasn't breakfast (hamburger). When I tried the tea, it had so many other flavors in it and was so lemony that I couldn't drink it. The waitress never came by to see how we were doing. Finally the food was dropped off by someone from the kitchen. I kept waiting for the waitress to come by so I could order something else to drink. Finally I flagged down the kitchen worker who had brought us our food and asked for a club soda. When she brought it, there was literally not a single bubble in it. It was like flat water. So, $4 for a glass of still water. The burger was good, the fries were soft and not crispy at all. The waitress only came by one more time, when we were almost finished. And then we had to flag her down for the check. All in all, decent food but horrible service. I would give it another try, hoping that it was just a bad waitress and not indicative of the whole staff. Enjoyed the eggs benedict and preferred it without using the "hollandaise" sauce. Pancakes were delicious but a little overly sweet for me. Husband really enjoyed it though! We ate at The Hoot twice today. First, we did take-out for brunch. Hubby got the delicious Breakfast Burrito, and I made the mistake of ordering two cider donuts. They are huge, so one was plenty! :-) It was delicious, although just a teeny bit dry in the thickest parts. Still, I snarfed it down. I still prefer 'county fair' cider donuts--smaller, more cake-like and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The Hoot's donuts were very good, but not 'fair donut' good. The Monday dinner menu was intriguing, so we decided to give it a try. It was Korean night. On Mondays, they have a single entree, and then a number of small plates. The menu is more limited, so if you're not inclined to the entree, you might opt to go 'tapas' style. We were both eager to try the Bibimbap with Bulgogi Beef ($25). The food was tasty, but it missed the mark on two fronts. First, Bibimbap is great not only because of the flavors, but the way it is prepared and served. It's usually served in a sizzling hot bowl, so as you eat, the rice on the bottom forms this crispy brown crust that also incorporates the flavors from the ingredients and sauces. It would have been EASY to crisp up the rice in a hot pan, giving it that crunch and warmth and then topping it with the tasty morsels of carrot, greens, sprouts, Bulgogi and shiitake mushrooms and give it that extra flavor, texture and authenticity. The Hoot's Bibimbap, while tasty, had none of that authenticity or soul. It's served at room temperature. It's not hot, it's not cold, and it's not quite Bibimbap. However, the Bulgogi beef was meltingly tender and tasty, and the Gochujang sauce was so very yummy. The second miss was the fried egg. It was fried almost hard. It's great when you have a softly fried egg on top of the Bibimbap where you break the yolk and it runs down and mixes with the other ingredients. Having a floppy, overcooked, flabby fried egg on top was kind of grossly unappetizing. While these issues with the food didn't fully detract from enjoying the meal, I found the service to be wholly lackluster. Our server never once checked on us after serving our meal. She came back after we were finished. I also asked her specifically not to put any onions or scallions on my Bibimbap, and of course, both our bowls came garnished with scallions. To her credit, she did offer to remake mine. But I wasn't about to wait another 20 minutes for them to remake my meal due to a few scallions, and, well, I wasn't about to ask them to remake my meal due to a few scallions. However, the server just dismissed it then and never mentioned it again. It was service with a fake smile. For dessert, we had the poached Asian pear in ginger syrup and black peppercorn with cinnamon ice cream. That was the star of the evening. The flavors together were outstanding. I almost licked the bowl! I found that the quality of food was good (albeit a bit pricey for what you get), but the lackluster service and the few details that missed the mark make me give The Hoot four stars instead of five. The food is tasty, but lacks attention to the fine details, and the service can use some work. And c'mon guys, learn to fry an egg the way it should be fried, okay? Rubber eggs are unappetizing any way you plate it. ***** Went back again this morning to try their brunch. The Lemon Ricotta pancakes were really delicious, with a lovely orange zest compound butter and maple syrup. The texture was fabulous--light, but dense as well due to the ricotta. It was almost like marrying a pancake and a crepe. The Peach Bellini was tasty--not too sweet. Service was much better, but we were seated and served by one of the owners/managers. I think the gal we had the other night was just phoning it in. If I could, I would up my rating to 4.5 stars. read more

I don't want to be a party pooper and NOT give this treasured local spot 5 stars, but I reserve that rating for restaurants that are a true destination, or superlative in some other way. The Hoot is a great neighborhood farm-to-table restaurant and bar with a terrific brunch menu. However I don't think it's worth going far out of your way, particularly for dinner. Kudos to The Hoot for the fresh ingredients and daily changing menus, for great brunch items and a world class cider donut, but the "themed" nights are a tax on the chef's skills and creativity. Recent Jamaican and Mexican nights reminded me that it might be better to just stick with brunch. Nothing terrible about the dinner experience, but nothing terribly inspired either. Started off with the banana pineapple bread. It was toasted, warm and it only lasted on the plate but a few minutes! It was delicious! The omelettes were filled with fresh ingredients and were so tasty. Fresh tomatoes, sausage, cheese...mmm. We finally made it to The Hoot after moving here 3 1/2 years ago, and I wish we'd have gone much sooner. We love the vibe of rustic wood beams, sky lights, and beautiful window light. Brunch on Friday had many choices and it was hard to choose. We started with a bloody mary (him) and cider press (me). They were delicious. Then for entrees we chose Smoked Ham Benedict (him) and Swiss Omelet (me), with a side salad. All was just perfect, we could really tell that the ingredients were premium and preparation was top notch. The omelet was full of yummy mushrooms and cheese. We liked having the coffee bar available to top off our mugs whenever we wanted. We ended with delightful, warm cider doughnuts outside (it was a warm Nov. 4th!) with a final cup of coffee. I grew up in downeast Maine and have been to many restaurants in Maine throughout my life, this one is a gem and stands head and shoulders above them all. I now live in California where the cuisine is top notch wherever you go and The Hoot would stand out here too. We went here for breakfast and the smoked salmon benedict was amazing. The hollandaise sauce was the best I've ever had. Eggs were perfectly poached and the potatoes were seasoned incredibly well. Great place alongside of Hwy 1, south of Belfast. Breakfast and brunch entrees were delicious - try the huevos rancheros. Outdoor patio is excellent, but the indoor seating is perfectly pleasant with windows opened. Come and sit a while - the kitchen prepares it just right, but isn't in a hurry (which is ok). read more
