I went on a Sunday evening and though there was a bit of a line the three people working got us in and out. I went with a vanilla bean shake with malt and caramel added. On our way back to the hotel for the evening we decided to stop for something sweet when we saw The Hop West, which the name isn't a great indicator of what they serve, but the giant mosaic ice cream cone on the front of the building was a good indicator. We walked in to a short line, staff seemed tired, and not overly enthusiastic, but offered some ice cream samples if we wanted to try anything. I got a few, but wasn't overly impressed with the first few. I ended up getting a 2 scoop cup, with salted caramel and i think moose tracks (or some variant of it). Pricing was ok, not great, and unfortunately i missed they offer free sprinkles. The 2 flavors i ended up getting were good, pretty standard, and hit the spot. They did also offer a good variety of vegan options and some small doggie ice cream cups as well, so seemingly something for everyone. The interior was brightly decorated with some fun painting, each incorporating ice cream into their theme, but as we looked around we also began to notice small rubber duckies hiding throughout...so if you go, be sure to keep and eye out for the hiding ducks! read more

Ice cream was amazing. Came in on a Friday afternoon. Team was patient, informative and helpful. Tried a flight with their salted caramel, Aztec chocolate, bulldog tracks and honey cream. Bulldog was my favorite but by such a slim margin. Creamy and rich with just the right amount of chocolate. The Aztec had some heat but it was on the back of the palate and not overwhelming. The honey was not overly sweet and creamy, perfect for an early summer day. The caramel was divine with little crystals of "burnt" caramel for crunch. So glad it's a regular flavor. Service and ambiance was like an assembly line which was appreciated. I got a Brownie Delight (which is a GF and vegan brownie with 2 scoops of your choice, hot fudge, whip [both of which I got vegan], 1 topping of your choice, and a cherry. When you are in need of some ice cream, this place delivers. They had many different flavors and all were fairly good options. The price seemed fair parking seem to be an issue, but we were able to get a spot on one of the side streets nearby. Great local chain for creamy ice cream. I tried the Aztec chocolate, and I thought it was great. I liked the spiciness and also the creaminess of the ice cream. My daughter got the unicorn poop, which is vanilla with berry swirls and nerds mixed in. She loved the goofy name and the sweetness. I forget what my husband and son ordered, but everyone was happy with their order. Service was fast and pleasant. There is a wide selection of frozen desserts made from different milks, so this is a good place for vegans or the lactose intolerant. read more

We stopped into Hop West on both Friday and Saturday of our Asheville weekend, because you have to have ice cream at least once a day on vacation. Friday night we got a parking spot right out front and walked in to an almost-empty ice cream parlor around 9:30pm. Still advertising Halloween flavors, I sampled a few and went with a scoop of "brain" flavored ice cream (strawberry with food coloring provided by beets). Saturday afternoon was a different story and different flavors! It was packed and we had to wait to score a table. I changed my ice cream plan and got a scoop of peanut butter with a generous helping of chocolate sprinkles. I've tried numerous unconventional ice creams here and each time, I'm blown away by the masterful blending of flavors. My last visit I tried the not-so-unconventional Mexican chocolate and, unsurprisingly, it was outstanding. Impossibly deep, rich fudginess jumped all over my palate like an Emeril BAM, and before I knew what hit me a cascade of tingly, intense cinnamon danced into my consciousness. I let Yelp lead me to an ice cream place and in Asheville, I should have expected something like this. Off the wall and unique. Not that there's anything wrong with that at all. In fact, this place is as unlike the standard "froyo" as you can possibly get. A small hole-in-the-wall with tables and chairs that don't match and a pile of board games greet you along with a couple coolers of ice cream with some of the most unusual ice cream flavors I have ever heard of. Sure, they have vanilla and chocolate and strawberry, but why not try the Bulldog Tracks or the Salted Caramel or the Fresh Ginger. I had a taste of the Lusty Monk Mustard. Surprisingly good, but not something you could really eat a whole scoop of. Yes, brown mustard mixed into vanilla ice cream. Try it! I went with a single scoop of the Thai Curry. Sweet and spicy, it tasted exactly like advertised - the slight zing of Thai curry spices mixed through the ice cream. A scoop was all of it that I could handle. Not that it wasn't good - it was excellent - but it's a strong flavor! I would absolutely return and I'll go off the beaten path with their different flavors! read more

The Hop West is an Ice Cream Shop in West Asheville off Haywood Road with specialty vegan and non-vegan ice creams, ice cream cakes, vegan brownie sundaes, ice cream by the scoop, pints and quarts to go, floats, hot chocolate and more. There's street parking, as well as a pay lot off Dunwell that's only $2/hr (I suggest brining cash, it's pretty challenging to shove a bag of $200 pennies in those tiny slots). I accidentally drove to the main creamery on the other side of West Asheville (which is presumably where they actually make the ice creams), but remembered I'd seen the storefront before right by Biscuit Head last time I was at their West Asheville local for brunch. If you're not familiar with the area - and your GPS continuously sends you on wild goose chases; I'd suggest just plugging the numbers in directly, to avoid any confusion. I had been following The Hop West on IG for quite some time - and was really curious about the CBD ice cream that they have, but every time I ingest any type of cannabanoids I start to think that farm animals are talking to me. And, I start talking *to* farm animals - which is a bit troubling considering I don't live on (or anywhere near) a farm. Although - I hear CBD is (actually) a non hallucinogen and great for PTSD, etc. Speaking of animals - the inside of The Hop is super cute; with bright colored walls and adorable, whimsical paintings of bears and other woodland creatures mid-dance holding sundaes and cakes and fun stuff like that. Since it's getting kinda chilly - it's the perfect laid back place to sit back, relax and enjoy some sweets and stay warm. I had a Vegan Brownie Sundae which is a 100% vegan (yasss!) ice cream dessert. It comes with your choice of two scoops of ice cream (I ordered one scoop of Cranberry Orange Habanero - the other a scoop of Cardamom Coconut Crema) on top of a (chewy) Vegan Brownie, drizzled with Chocolate Syrup, sprinkled with Peanuts, a large dollup of Coconut Whipped Cream, and topped with a Maraschino Cherry. The sundae was huge, to say the least - definitely enough to split. I was on a solo date, and couldn't finish it all myself, so the nice gals working there were kind enough to give me a container to tote my leftover brownie home in. After you enjoy your Ice Cream, I suggest stopping the gift shop "Instant Karma West", that's just a couple doors down. They have a zillion fun things like candles, incense, CBD stuff, and mini spirit animal sculptures. I sampled a few flavors (No sugar pistachio, Coffee, Cardamom, Chocolate Orange, and Gingerbread) and it was good but it's not something I would be crazy about. I committed to the coffee, which is my usual go to flavor, and it leaned more on the sweet side. I was also impressed by their no sugar pistachio not having sugar. I'll be honest in saying that I've spent the last many years thinking that The Hop was mediocre and just recently have I began to really appreciate them. First of, Greg at at the Hop is a great guy who is friendly and supports so many local organizations. He donates his goods and hosts events and art shows at his shops. When it comes to basic flavors like chocolate and strawberry ice cream, they are nothing great BUT the specialty flavors is where it's at. I tried an incredible Red Bean ice cream this weekend. It was creamy, dreamy deliciousness. I've felt the same way recently everytime I try an odd sounding flavor. Yum! read more
