Fantastic cute little shop with some fantastic ice cream and milkshakes (they have more offerings but thats what I had). The staff was also incredibly friendly and knowledgeable , service was prompt, and prices were fair. While there is not much space to sit down inside, it is cozy and inviting, and you can just step right out into black mountain, a great place to walk as you enjoy your treat. read more

Came here for an afternoon snack. Small store with limited flavors. Some of the flavors were unique such as grasshopper which was a Oreo mint. I had a single butter pecan in a cone. Nice flavor, ok size scoop. Service was quick Not room to eat inside but it was well kept. They had some in a freezer already to go. They said they rotate the flavors so I will try a different flavor next time. read more

Instant 5 stars for offering a whole entire CASE of dairy free ice cream flavors!! Most shops only offer 1 or 2, but not only did The Hop have more than 6 non-dairy flavors, they also had gluten free cones, dairy-free pints for sale, and other allergen-free goodies like cookies, rice krispy treats, and brownies. The workers were all super friendly and they allowed me to sample a few flavors (which were all delicious) before choosing which to order. I love this place! read more

It was better as a candy store. Their "root beer" float is some soda shit from Whole Foods that tastes like dirt and Hitler's left nut. Don't get me wrong, I love Whole Foods, but mixing their "natural" soda with vanilla ice cream was a wrong move. Also, the store is ugly and could use some FUN local art read more

We live in Black Mountain and have gone to The Hop a couple of times due to friends' recommendations. Both times we went, they were out of ingredients. No chocolate syrup for banana split and no whip cream for shakes. And, in our opinion, even if they had those ingredients, the treats were sub-par at best. Shake tasted no better than Mcdpnald's and the banana split had zero pineapples, cherries, or strawberries. This place is a tourist-trap. Save your money. read more

The Black Mountain outlet of this Asheville ice cream place is small, with only a couple of seats inside. But the selection was surprisingly large, and close to half the flavors were non-dairy, with some being based on sunflower seeds, others coconut, and others like more traditional sorbets. Trying a Southern Comfort flavor, I was stupidly naive as to what it would be (as a former Kentucky resident), but it was actually a bourbon flavor with some fruit pieces mixed in. This was a vegan flavor that was surprisingly creamy. My more conventional grasshopper delivered plenty of mint and conventional Oreos. The price was right too. Realistically, I couldn't have expected much more from a place in such a small town. read more

I mean honestly put me in a Hop ice cream and I will "dish" out 5 stars. I've been a fan of this local spot forever. First of all, they have a inclusive and friendly environment. The shop is always clean and welcoming of all. Happy and friendly staff working here. Second of all, the flavors are great. They keep some staples and rotate others. I love the incorporation of local stuff (like local chocolate, spices and/or cookies from local GS troops). Love their coconut milk options. Third, they give a good go local card discount. I find their prices very fair for what they offer. I got a pistachio chocolate coconut milt cup and it was perfect for my appetizer pre dinner. We were greeted promptly upon walking in and the scooper was friendly. The location was small but nearly organized. The ice cream case wasn't full, which was kind of disappointing; but, it's not tourist season, so it's understandable. They had about 10 or so dairy ice cream options and about 8 non-dairy options... Including one made from pepita milk, which is something I've never seen before. I opted for the blueberry ice cream and a cinnamon non-dairy ice cream. One can get a sugar cone or cake cone at no extra charge. They also offer a gf sugar cone or a waffle cone at an extra charge. Both of the ice cream flavors were good. The blueberry had real blueberries in it, a+ there! The cinnamon was actual cinnamon spice, not hot cinnamon, but not super creamy since it was no -dairy... If I'm remembering correctly, the base was oatmilk. I would like to visit again during tourist season so the case is full of flavors. I'm pretty geeked about my new favorite icecream in Black Mountain! First, The Hop is located in the heart of the quaint and inviting area of downtown Black Mountain. I ordered two scoops: Vanilla Bean and the Salted Caramel. The Salted Caramel icecream had a nice crunch. Their icecream has a nice buttery texture that I just loved. The staff is so sweet and friendly. They went out of their way to package my icecream, so that I can take it home. I'm definitely going to hop my way over to The Hop the next time I'm in town! read more

Five of us walked into tThe Hop at 8:45 pm tonight Friday November 14th and the young man that was working behind the counter looked up at us and said "We are closed". The sign on the door and the time on Google maps listed a 9 pm close time. I asked if he would see iv the five of us and he said "NO, we close at 8:45 pm ". Seeing this is the beginning of the off season in this area I feel this young man is doing a disservice to the owner of this business by turning away cash paying customers. read more

So we googled this place and made it I was excited to take my wife and two kids my 3 year old got unicorn poop. my wife got salted caramel and I got Oreo mocha so good over all this place was awesome. What was not awesome was service there was a young lady and a young man after paying I had forgot to grave a water and as my wife gos to pay he slammed it on the table like I'm some kind of dog that shhh pissed me off and then his right back to getting on there phones. Such a variety of ice creams and flavors! I have never viewed so many allergic free options! Cayenne Chocolate (dairy based) is my favorite. Homemade waffle cones made as you wait! Be prepared to wait in line outside as the inside is small. There are plenty of rocking chairs and benches along the sidewalk to enjoy your treat! read more

This place needs more recognition!! My husband and I were visiting the area from Dallas and stopped in for a sweet treat. Hubby is lactose intolerant and didn't have hopes that he'd be able to find much, but they had quite the variety of vegan options for him to try. He wound up getting two different kinds because he couldn't choose (banana chocolate and a cookies and cream flavor made with oat milk). He loved both! I got the salted caramel - incredibly creamy with little caramel balls throughout that were both salty and sweet. So, so good. Probably the best I've cream I've had in a while. Please, please give this place a try - you won't be disappointed! read more

Delicious ice cream--really the best I've ever had in all my travels about the USA, and I am serious about my ice cream! Not overly sweet, which I appreciate. A nice range of both creative and classic hard ice cream flavors and also lots of options for vegan or dairy-free folks made with coconut milk or various nut milks; they offer a delicious gluten-free cone as well. Moved to new location at 640 Merrimon Ave. in July of 2007, came under ownership of Ashey & Greg Garrison in August 2008, opened the Black Mountain location in 2018. The Rwandan pour over I had a couple days ago was full-bodied and delicious, with deep red fruit notes. It was made with care using a Kalita wave flat-bottom dripper, and it was clear that the brewer knew what he was doing. It was so good that I picked up a bag of beans they had for sale (from Sweet Bloom roasters), which has been giving me great pour-overs at the house. We also had a butter croissant, which was absolutely delightful. I returned today to try their milk-drink offerings. I had a masala caramel cappuccino to-go, and let me just tell you--these people know what's up. It was a seasonal offering, and it showed a deep understanding of the marriage of sweetness with flavorful coffee offerings. While some of their pastries look decent, there is something about their Viennoiserie (laminated dough) products that they just seem to not understand. Every one of their croissants I've tried were underproved, which causes an undesirable internal texture that is dense and not open and light like croissants are supposed to be. They are also very "bread like", which shows that they are losing control of the temperature of the dough and butter during the lamination process. This causes the butter to melt into the dough, rather than keeping the intended layers. This is what causes the crumb of the croissant to be more bread like, rather than the light honeycomb structure you find in a well-crafted croissant. Their other products, assorted buns, cinnamon rolls, etc., look decent, but I haven't tried much of those as they aren't really what I enjoy. I hope at some point they can dial in their understanding of the laminated dough process as it would only elevate and improve what they offer. However, they seem to be busy, so they may be fine with delivering a lower quality product in that department. I also understand that my perspective may be different than the average customer as I'm a professional pastry chef and consultant. I'm not sharing this review to be negative, but to give an honest opinion that may spark this establishment to look deeper into their process and find ways to offer even more to their customers.

What stood out about Black Eyed Susan is their willingness to accommodate our needs and their attention to detail. They were never pushy or impatient, and the communication was fantastic throughout the entire process. Their team went above and beyond on our wedding day. I was initially worried about the logistics of preparing food onsite, but the process was seamless and the presentation was absolutely beautiful. A few highlights were the ham and sweet potato biscuits, the balsamic glazed short ribs, and the fried green tomatoes. If you're looking for a caterer, I can't recommend BES enough!!

Our server was quick and so was the time we got our food after ordering. The bread, cheese and vegetables were fresh and tasty. The grilled chicken in my sandwich was very chewy and tough. It did not have a lot of flavor to it. It was a bland, white piece of chicken with little to no seasoning. It appeared and tasted liked it were boiled chicken breasts.

As a coffee enthusiast, I admit to sometimes being what my wife would call a "coffee snob" from time to time. I'm happy to report that Recess passes every test I have for coffee. The vibe was perfect, with a classic wooden-style to the seating, and even a really great retro/minimalist playground outside for our kids. The Rwandan pour over I had a couple days ago was full-bodied and delicious, with deep red fruit notes. It was made with care using a Kalita wave flat-bottom dripper, and it was clear that the brewer knew what he was doing. It was so good that I picked up a bag of beans they had for sale (from Sweet Bloom roasters), which has been giving me great pour-overs at the house. We also had a butter croissant, which was absolutely delightful. I returned today to try their milk-drink offerings. I had a masala caramel cappuccino to-go, and let me just tell you--these people know what's up. It was a seasonal offering, and it showed a deep understanding of the marriage of sweetness with flavorful coffee offerings. I love it when I stumble up on a truly wonderful shop for coffee enthusiasts, and Recess has my full stamp of approval. I will be back every chance I get.

Mrs. K. was happy with her latte which is the proper test. We lingered a bit, enjoying the quiet and watching Black Mountain wake up around us before getting back on the road.
