Stopped by with my family for a wonderful time. We were gathering for a family reunion of types and…read moresomeone suggested that we all get together at MountainRose. It was an exceptionally brilliant idea. The place has a phenomenal staff (especially Opie). They were welcoming, personable and knowledgeable. They had a deep experience with wines that helped guide the experienced wine drinkers and an empathetic approach to those (aka, me) who were clueless. I (ahm, the inexperienced) were never intimidated or given the snob treatment. However, my brother who knows his way around a bottle or two (or at least actively tries to fake it) was given the appropriate insights to what he was drinking. Across the ten of us, we tried multiple different wines and they were all well liked. Many made their way home as people had to take some bottles home. You can tell that I'm an amateur because the whole "flight of wines" thing was new to me. It was brilliant to sample many different varieties in what I would call shooters to the great disappointment of my brother. Yeah, I told you he acted like he knew what he was doing. They also gave us a brief tour of the beautiful grounds as well as a look "behind the scenes". I would really recommend visiting in the fall and maybe seeing things in action. The drive is a bit "way back there", but I highly encourage you to take the trip. It's definitely worth it.

Stopped at Southern Craft Barbecue while passing through VA and it's a hidden wonder not too far…read moreoff the interstate. Wasn't expecting much, but the food was fantastic. BBQ tends to blend together after a while, but theirs stood out, good flavor without being overpowering, something for everybody. I got the smoked turkey sandwich and the turkey was so tender and juicy I almost ordered a second one, even though the first was plenty filling. I'd be back here in a heartbeat if I'm ever down this direction again.

We visit Bristol every September for the annual Bristol Rhythm and Roots and this is our go-to…read moredinner spot. It's a bit more upscale and the bbq is delicious, there's a good variety of meat selections and sides, portion sizes are good and the prices are reasonable. Prices are competitive with festival food concession prices but coming here you get served and get to sit comfortably in air conditioning! The cocktails and wine are reasonable too. Glasses of house wines are $7. Most of the cocktails are $10. Pints of beer are $5. We've tried many of the meats and sides over our visits and found some of our favorites to be the peppered bacon, dry rub wings, brisket, pulled pork and the house salad. The peppered bacon comes with pickled jalapeños that work really well. The wings are meaty, smoky and crispy. The pulled pork includes crispy ends. So delicious. A house salad doesn't sound like much but the portion is generous. They provide a selection of bbq sauces and I like to blend the Stoney Creek Original with the slightly spicy Memphis sauces together. We've also had combo platters including brisket and burnt ends and those were spot-on too. Sides of beans, seasoned fries, sweet potato soufflé and Mac and cheese are good too. Of the dining spots in downtown Bristol, this is our spot. It's a bit more upscale of a dining experience, the food is quality is consistent, prices are reasonable and service is attentive.
