It's in Houth, a gorgeous coastal village just a short train ride from Dublin. The exterior photo is actually the rear entrance, while the street entrance is down the stairs. Like a secret path to a private lair. Fantastic bar! Stone and ancient wood floors. Built in 1042, I'm told. 24 taps, and all the Irish whiskey there is. A few of the better bottles showed prices by the glass, €15 and up. Sorely tempted to try one, but we had a long day ahead. Normally, an $18 glass of whiskey is just fine with me, but as I had moderated my intake, I had found myself less able to drink all day. Plus, it was about 10 am. Great service from a young bartender, who assured me NO hour was too early to drink in Ireland. Pro tip: Fly into Dublin Airport, skip that town, and head to Houth. Seafood galore, and The Abbey. Bonus review: Five minutes away is Ann's Ice Cream just off the Irish Sea. Worth it for the view. My child, a very particular eater, just loved a huge waffle cone with "Double Cream Vanilla" which is apparently quite tasty. Most notable for the "No Toilet's" door. Grammar be damned.

When my husband and I both ordered the Abbey Tavern Howth Chowder, the server ensured us that it would be the best chowder in Howth. He was right! Really delicious and hearty with fresh, local seafood! Of course, I had a Guinness to wash it all down. We hope to get back there again someday.

I also appreciated the fact that a waiter was able to adjust tables to seat our large party and everyone that waited on us was very kind. It's a good spot and if you're in the area like we were I recommend ! The location is also nice and I love how it's decked out with a lot of old and local bar and brewery signage.

To get into the actual restaurant there is about a 3 inch step but once inside there is a wheelchair accessible bathroom on the ground floor. Since I'm ambulatory, I didn't ask to see if they had a ramp, a simple ramp would easily make that 3 inch step doable for a chair. we didn't have the calamari, but the table next to us did and it looked delicious, if we were to go back, we would probably get the calamari and fish and chips.

The decor is exactly what I imagined, complete with stained glass and a real stag's head. Ordered the fish and chips, which were crisp on the outside with a flavorful batter, and tender fish on the inside. It also came with a nice little pea salad, with mushy peas and whole peas together with the greens. I definitely need to make this! Also got the Irish Cottage Pie and it was very tasty - rich in flavor but lighter than I expected, in a good way. Shared a pint of Guiness (just missed splitting the G - lol) and finished with an Irish coffee, which hit the spot. This is definitely a great place to go for a quiet pint or for a fun night of food and friends.

We got their fish & chips and Irish Cottage Pie. Both were very good and filling. Fish was nicely breaded and fried. Good flavor in their batter. Cottage pie was full of flavor but not overly rich. Great atmosphere and food/drinks. Lots of pubs to choose from in Dublin - Stag's Head is worthy of a visit.
