I've come here often for the last several years since I work nearby. Their oxtail is the best I've had...when it's fresh. Lately it has been a 'hit or miss'. One time it will be super tender and fresh and the next time quite the opposite. However, I still enjoy coming here as it is usually decent. I also love their hummingbird cabbage salad as it is quite tasty. The rice and beans are also delicious. I will continue to come back and update my rating periodically. I plan to also come back here for lunch with a group of coworkers. I will update my retire then. Adding that for service, I would say the appropriate level of customer service is given. I have only done takeout here. In the summer, it is usually pretty warm in here so I wouldn't be able to eat inside. I will give it a try one time when the temp is reasonable. read more

My fiancée and I always have trouble finding a good place to eat especially when it comes to Jamaican food. In our area of South Jersey we are left with options of going over to Philadelphia or sticking in Jersey with subpar food with high prices. Until we came across The Hummingbird Restaurant! We originally found this spot when we lived in Bordentown over a year ago. Since then we haven't stopped raving about it but had yet to return (mostly because we had lived further away now) Yesterday during our usual friendly banter on where to eat we remembered The Hummingbird. Even though the restaurant was 40 minutes away we decided to check it out since it was the ONLY Jamaican restaurant in Jersey worth going to. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. Not only did it smell amazing the whole ride home, our food was still piping hot ( 40 minute drive on Friday going south bound in 295 traffic.) We ordered 2 large platters both came with rice & peas and cabbage. One of the two platters had jerk chicken along with Mac n cheese( Mac is a extra $2.25 to add to a platter but trust me you'll be doing yourself a favor by getting it) the other with bbq jerk chicken. All this to say a year was too long of a wait and the drive is worth it if you aren't in the area. They give great portions no matter the size platter. And it was worth every penny! The staff is friendly and attentive. The food does take a while to come out since it is fresh so if you're someone who needs to be in and out I would suggest calling and ordering ahead. I can't believe it's been so long and we are trying Hummingbird for the first time. F and I stopped in recently because we were competing in the Passport To Trenton restaurant contest. Our first stop was Jamaica since we were already downtown. This corner cafe has been serving the community for a number of years now and still going strong. I have always heard great things about the food and was happy to finally eat it. I ordered the medium curry chicken with cabbage, rice and beans. F ordered the fish and chips (which was made fresh to order). We took our treasures home to devour, but the restaurant is bright, colorful and clean. The staff was very helpful and welcoming. This spot is a must if you are in the area, or make a special trip. F and I can now add another Jamaican restaurant to our growing list of fantastic places to eat locally. read more

While the taste of the food is pretty good the service is deplorable: I have been eating here since the restaurants inception and as a fellow Jamaican I held out as long as I could (yes even though how I feel is no fault of my own, as a fellow Jamaican it just hits closer to 'home'): 1. When your prices change it should reflect so on the menu. The soup use to be 3 dollars and now it is 4.25 and being served in a smaller container. The menu reflects the old price and as such if a customer points that out to you you should honor the 'old' price. 2. I am not sure what's going with the oxtail as of late because it has little to no meat on it. In the past it was not like this so maybe it's a new vendor. 3. The workers act as though they are doing you a favor when we go and patronize their place of employment. I was on hold for TWENTY SIX minutes on 11/19/2018. After 5 minutes of being in shock that I was still on hold I walked over to the restaurant only to see that there was NO LINE and when I showed them my phone and that I am still on hold to place an order they gave me that 'what's your issue' look. read more

This is my favorite Jamaican spot in Jersey! I would definitely recommend calling in your order, especially during the lunch hour, as they can get very busy. My top suggestions would be curry chicken, rice and peas (an extra few cents to upgrade), Mac and cheese, festival, and their cabbage. Really great jerk and curry chicken. I've never had the festival side anywhere else so get that too. Great patties if all you need is a snack! The ladies behind the counter are friendly and take you order and payment as soon as possible. Having said that I just have two issues with Hummingbird. The wait for your order is unbearable. Even when you try to order ahead, you might still wait in the restaurant for your order or wait to pay. This is annoying when you've got limited time for lunch. They do serve generous portions and it's a lot of carbs for the lunch hour. I do have issues with finishing my meal here as it usually results in nap time for me at 3 pm. Take that into consideration when you choose between the sizes that are available. If you have some self control, perhaps some of it can be saved for dinner. read more

This is about my 3rd or 4th visit here, and I always get the jerk chicken with rice & beans and plantains. Though the chicken pieces aren't very meaty, the jerk sauce has that great balance of sweet and spicy. There is a little extra sauce on plate for mixing into rice. My only drawback was the exceptionally long wait time. I don't know what they prepare ahead of time, but I'd doubt they're making each individual serving dish entirely from scratch. If you go, try the jerk chicken, but allow at least 30 minutes during lunch time. read more

They have really great food. Especially the oxtail and jerk chicken. For their meat dishes only, I would definitely give them 5 stars. But I am not a huge fan of their sides. Most of the time I go, the restaurant is empty but I think most customers do take-out (as I do). You should definitely call ahead for take-out since it can take up to 25 minutes for your food to be ready. But there are plenty of seating inside to eat. There's street parking and most of the time I've been there, I was able to park across the street from the restaurant. I really don't know why this place has so many good reviews because I didn't have that experience. I got oxtails, rice and peas, Mac &cheese and 2 beef patties. I take home food every Thursday for dinner for my son. The oxtails were suppose to be falling off the bone. The were tough like they didn't cook long enough. Very chewing...got stuck in my teeth. Mac/ cheese was dry. I haven't ever needed to put seasoning on Jamaican food. But I did yesterday. Bland. The rice was ok. I have been on a diet almost a year but decided to treat myself and was so disappointed. The good wasn't good for 14.00$...not at all and it sent me to the bathroom 5 times between 1 and 4 on. I bought a large plate of oxtails for dinner, I took about three bites and threw the rest away. The tails were tough, not flavorful and drowned in sauce.
