Large bbq Jerk Chicken with Rice & Peas and Cabbage

My fiancée and I always have trouble finding a good place to eat especially when it comes to Jamaican food. In our area of South Jersey we are left with options of going over to Philadelphia or sticking in Jersey with subpar food with high prices. Until we came across The Hummingbird Restaurant! We originally found this spot when we lived in Bordentown over a year ago. Since then we haven't stopped raving about it but had yet to return (mostly because we had lived further away now) Yesterday during our usual friendly banter on where to eat we remembered The Hummingbird. Even though the restaurant was 40 minutes away we decided to check it out since it was the ONLY Jamaican restaurant in Jersey worth going to. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. Not only did it smell amazing the whole ride home, our food was still piping hot ( 40 minute drive on Friday going south bound in 295 traffic.) We ordered 2 large platters both came with rice & peas and cabbage. One of the two platters had jerk chicken along with Mac n cheese( Mac is a extra $2.25 to add to a platter but trust me you'll be doing yourself a favor by getting it) the other with bbq jerk chicken. All this to say a year was too long of a wait and the drive is worth it if you aren't in the area. They give great portions no matter the size platter. And it was worth every penny! The staff is friendly and attentive. The food does take a while to come out since it is fresh so if you're someone who needs to be in and out I would suggest calling and ordering ahead. Total for everything was about $35. Great price for Jersey especially with all the food they give you!

it tasted fantastic ! well... of course u have to love spicy dishes to enjoy such

Real Jamaican Jerk Chicken has cloves of garlic in it. Using onion instead of garlic makes it too sweet, I recommend it

WOW! This place is amazing. The owner and her son were so awesome and friendly made me feel very welcomed and at home I had the oxtail. It was perfectly seasoned and so very tender. I definitely am looking forward to exploring the rest of the menu. Anyone close or far should come and check The Hummingbird Resturant out it will be well worth it

Curry chicken. Picture doesn't do it justice.

I can't believe it's been so long and we are trying Hummingbird for the first time. F and I stopped in recently because we were competing in the Passport To Trenton restaurant contest. Our first stop was Jamaica since we were already downtown. This corner cafe has been serving the community for a number of years now and still going strong. I have always heard great things about the food and was happy to finally eat it. I ordered the medium curry chicken with cabbage, rice and beans. F ordered the fish and chips (which was made fresh to order). We took our treasures home to devour, but the restaurant is bright, colorful and clean. The staff was very helpful and welcoming. This spot is a must if you are in the area, or make a special trip. F and I can now add another Jamaican restaurant to our growing list of fantastic places to eat locally.

While the taste of the food is pretty good the service is deplorable: I have been eating here since the restaurants inception and as a fellow Jamaican I held out as long as I could (yes even though how I feel is no fault of my own, as a fellow Jamaican it just hits closer to 'home'): 1. When your prices change it should reflect so on the menu. The soup use to be 3 dollars and now it is 4.25 and being served in a smaller container. The menu reflects the old price and as such if a customer points that out to you you should honor the 'old' price. 2. I am not sure what's going with the oxtail as of late because it has little to no meat on it. In the past it was not like this so maybe it's a new vendor. 3. The workers act as though they are doing you a favor when we go and patronize their place of employment. I was on hold for TWENTY SIX minutes on 11/19/2018. After 5 minutes of being in shock that I was still on hold I walked over to the restaurant only to see that there was NO LINE and when I showed them my phone and that I am still on hold to place an order they gave me that 'what's your issue' look.

Ordered 4 deconstructed rotis: 2 chicken and potato, a goat and a jerk chicken. 3 with paratha root and 1 with buss up shut. All were super tasty-deep and (not too) spicy flavor, really good sized portions (it gave me 3 meals) and packed nicely. substitutes for the curried potatoes that typically go along with the meal are available. I would personally get the buss up shut variety of roti or opt for the wrapped version in the future the chickpea filling was quite messy due to my error of ripping it. A very satisfying meal nonetheless. I'm looking forward to trying some of their other offerings.

I ordered the meals via door dash pickup online and when I told the staff my order they had difficulty finding my order. That was the first issue. Before I could get the full word "door dash" out she blurted out that they did not confirm the order as if it was a delivery order. The next issue was that they ran out of jerk chicken. The man told me that there is some cooking in the oven and that it would be ready in 5 minutes. I was cool with that. At least I knew the food would be fresh. Problem! He lied the jerk chicken would not be ready in 5 min instead it was ready in 45 min. I should have cancelled my order and asked for a refund but I continued to wait. There were no apologies for the wait time or the rude customer service. When I got home to begin eating I noticed that they did not give us a substantial portion of meet. It was mainly bones. I felt like I definitely got ripped off. Also, I think they changed the recipe of the sauce for the jerk chicken because it was really sweet and tangy instead of being spicy. I don't think I will be back unfortunately. This is not the first time that I have had a bad experience at this restaurant. Whether its them running out of food, order not being ready for pickup, or bad customer service..it is always something. It is time to find another local Jamaican restaurant in the area. If you have any recommendations please send them my way! Cheers!

My wife spent over an hour searching for places and stumbled upon scotch bonnet kitchen. We think we heard of a place through the chef and owner Todd of Roti plus Trinidadian restaurant a couple miles away where we're regulars We decide we have nothing to lose and only to gain, and I'm glad that we did make the decision as it ended up being a really good surprising meal I understand a lot of these types of ethnic food. Restaurants are takeout only and we would of course prefer to stay out after being in the house all day, but regardless bringing the food home didn't change anything. It was delicious. So what did we order? I had the stewed snapper with plantains and cabbage. It was cooked to perfection. The meat fell right off the skeleton. My wife had a meat pie, the macaroni and cheese, and then she started digging into my dish as well, which is a good thing Unfortunately, we did not take any food photos, but it was a work of art and just as tasty and we will certainly be back. Need to try the oxtail and or the goat dishes. Very friendly staff helpful with this couple questions that we had for the part that we could see of the establishment very clean well organized seem to have a good system and the best part of all they were busy.
