great chicken cheese steaks, omelets are large with lots of cheese and bacon - great rye bread - been going of 30+ years

Been a long time (definitely over a decade) since I've had food from The Hungry A. I may have had my first Delco hoagie (meat on top of lettuce) from here. I was in the neighborhood around lunch time and saw a line of people waiting for orders. I parked in the bowling alley lot next door. The girl at the counter was very friendly and recommended a cheesesteak. I ordered one with American Cheese and hot peppers. You get a choice of seeded or non seeded roll ... of course I went seeded. I sat at the old school counter and enjoyed hearing some locals catching up, older fellas chatting about nothing and watching the boys work that flat top. My sandwich came out pretty fast. The roll was crispy and fresh, the meat was tasty and packed in so tight not a morsel of meat fell out, the cheese was melted into the roll and meat extremely well and each bite was full of hot pepper bite. It was well put together and made. I was impressed and would rank this cheesesteak pretty high in Delco. Not the best I've had but quantity and quality wise it's well above average. The breakfast here is what everyone typically raves about (I'll be back for a breakfast sandwich), but don't sleep on the lunch menu. Especially that cheesesteak! We've been trying breakfast places in the area and found this gem. There's a parking lot. You order at the counter. They have a case with different drinks including cans of Diet Coke. They have a rack of Herr's chip options. The people are very friendly and helpful. There are two long tables with stools for patrons. They've been family owned and operating for 60 years. We tried the Eggle which is 2 eggs and cheese on a bagel and the grilled cheese sandwich. We also got a side of home fries. Everything was delicious. I saw that they have Amoroso rolls so I want to try a hoagie or cheesesteak next time. read more

We randomly found this place on our way to another event and I am glad that we did. When we walked in we were immediately greeted. Customer service 10/10. My husband got the cheesesteak with hot peppers and onions. He is not a spice guy, so the peppers were hot to him but overall the sandwich was a 8/10 . I had the Big Muff with mushrooms which was really good. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly. It feels like your are having a good meal with neighbors. It had been almost 20 yrs since I had a Philly cheesesteak. So as I headed back to the DMV from Philly, I took a slight detour to get a cheesesteak. Within one minute of entering the restaurant, the staff greeted me and took my order. I ordered the cheesesteak with grilled onions and peppers. It was THE most delicious cheesesteak I've ever tasted. The bread was the very best, and the cheese was very flavorful. Besides my dining great experience, I really enjoyed the interaction between the local patrons and the staff. I look forward to returning. read more

A great place. Been open many years. Recently on TV for their Anniversary. Sometimes crowded but they are quick and move fast. You can get breakfast sandwiches all day which is a plus. Coffee very good, another plus. Only takes cash, no big deal to me. Grew up in South Philly and local neighborhood places the same. I decided to check this place out due to Yelp Reviews. First tip - GPS directions don't work. This place is next to Sproul Lanes I came in at lunch to try breakfast which they served at noon. They don't serve potatoes which was a bummer but I tried the egg, cheese, mushroom and onions on a bagel. What an amazing treat. I ate it all and I'm debating on going back tomorrow :) The owner Bruce was very nice. He came up to me and starred talking to me on many different subjects. You don't get this type of service in a chain restaurant. I love shopping small. They only take cash but not a big deal since my tasty sandwich was only $4. The walls had a bunch of old papers and such (frames could use a dusting). It was neat looking at them. The place is set up with stools along each side of the wall and a long booth down the middle so no private seating. I can tell this place gets packed especially since they had a ton of people in the store at 1130 am on a Monday. Bruce told me about the cheesesteaks. I think I'll try that next. Sometimes, it's the little things that matter. This place has a lot going for it that would make it a favorite of mine automatically. It's been around close to 50 years, that's a plus. It's known for great breakfast sandwiches, that's another plus. It has a lunch counter feel to it which I just love. In a world where people think places like Panera Bread and Starbucks are great, I will take these family run places any day. But why is the Hungry A more special than most places? Let me put it to you this way. I wish I could say I'm a regular here, but I'm not. I try to get here every now and then. But my schedule is what it is, and I live in an area where I have a lot of other choices. That's just me. If I lived in this area of Springfield I'd be more of a regular. So why do I bring this up? I can say I've been here a handful of times in my life. Last time I was here before this week was maybe a year ago, give or take a couple months. But when I walked in this week, I swear the owner greeted me with a "Hi Steve." I don't know how he did it. I don't know how he remembered based on maybe one conversation we had a while ago. But I was impressed. But what's important is the food. And in my book, you just can't beat fresh eggs off of a grill that's been in use forever. On top of that, another little thing they do well is when they serve you a sandwich on a bagel, they fold the egg around the bacon and cheese so your sandwich doesn't fall apart when you eat it. That's just smarts that you acquire from years of doing it right. Comfort breakfast at it's best. I will make it a point to stop here more often. It's worth a side trip. read more

We moved to Media about a year ago and The Hungry A has been on my list of places to try. Idk why i waited so long to go!! This place is awesome. Great prices and super friendly staff. It is family owned and operated and they appreciate every customer that walks through the door. It's such a good, heart-warming feeling. They make everything fresh to order and they get a lot of to go orders. Be prepared to wait and if you are in a rush, just call ahead. The Hungry A is definitely one of my go-to places now. Anytime I am in the Delco area, I have to get us some bfast sandwiches from The Hungry A! I never had any issues with this spot, and the employees are always super welcoming. The inside is small and you get a homey/family feel from it. I highly recommend the smokie, egg, and cheese. The bread is always fresh, which is key to a good sandwich. First time at the Hungry A and had a fantastic breakfast with my son. We decided to stop on our way to school this morning. The staff were very friendly and helpful as some food joints can be a bit intimidating the first time you walk in. Even some of he customers helped in the decision making process. We settled for a Bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel and the cheesesteak and egg on a fresh Amoroso roll (see pic). So good!!!! Make no mistake this is a "joint" and that is a compliment. So you know when you stumble upon a place that ends up being a national treasure? That's what just happened here. I was greeted immediately, it's a walk up counter and I had to look at the menu, they left me alone but also explained the menu and what was going on. I ordered and as they made it ( right in front of me on the cleanest grill area I have ever seen, especially in a establishment that has been there for almost 60 years) the owner explained that the sausage was fresh sweet Italian. He also introduced me to the whole staff, asked my name. Let me know that they had other specials and that they deliver to businesses in the area. I got my breakfast sandwich. A soda and a tasty cake for later. I drove to work and sat in the parking lot and ate the BEST breakfast sandwich of my life!!!! You know when your stuffed and you contemplate actually driving back to get another it was so delicious???? That's where I'm at right now!!! Instead I'm writing this review while licking my fingers. My husband and I were hungry after getting off a flight coming back from a cruise with a group of friends. We use Yelp a lot and came across this place that had great reviews. It's a small place, a "dive" joint that has great friendly staff, family owned business for 56 years, and I cannot say enough about the cheese steak hoagie I had. I love a restaurant with personality and this place has it in spades! This is a family run joint and the owner, Bruce, is incredibly personable. I guarantee he will make you feel welcome. The remainder of the staff is very nice as well. Just a heads up that the place gets busy, especially on Saturday mornings. You're going to wait a few minutes for your sandwich but it will be worth it. Order a very good coffee and you can sip while you're waiting. Note that your first refill is free. A breakfast sandwich here is so much better that the fast food joints that's it's unfair even to compare them. Every order is made from scratch. The first thing that made me smile is seeing the stack of Amoroso's boxes. That's a great start to what will be a fabulous sandwich. BTW- here you can choose a kaiser or a long roll. I highly recommend the long roll. Trust me, I know these things. All the usual fillings are available and I chose sausage, egg and cheese on that incredible long roll. The have this neat trick of folding the fillings inside the egg so it's easier to eat without everything spilling out. They do the same thing with the kaiser. Very cool. This is an OMG, role your eyes and moan kind of sandwich. One bite and you'll understand why it gets so busy. My sandwich and coffee was $7 and change and worth every penny. Cash only. There are other breakfast options available including omelets and platters but sandwiches are by far the most popular. Both of the big fast food chains are just seconds away but for a breakfast sandwich, they don't stand a chance with me. read more

At the risk of being redundant, I will say I, like others, have driven by this place a thousand times. Probably more than that. I've noticed it (you can't miss the big painted sign on their wall), never even thought to go in. Thanks to my trusted Yelper advisors Steven B, Dee M and Steve S, The Reverend Dr. Steak and I went. I am so very glad we did. This place is like a lunch counter, where you order up front, grab a cold drink from the cooler (or get coffee from them) and go sit either at the 20-seat rectangular communal table (with stools that spin!) or at a counter facing the wall. All around are boxes of Amoroso's rolls and other supplies. Amoroso's rolls IMHO are the best in Philly. We were greeted so warmly. They asked if this was our first time in, yes it was, so they gave us a rundown of their food - known for their breakfast sandwiches, also known for their french toast, don't serve pancakes or waffles. Not being a big egg eater, I got the French Toast and the Rev. did as well. I got Scrapple on the flat top, and he got well done bacon. He also got coffee. We sat, and his coffee came out. It was a little delayed with an explanation and apology because they just got an order for 75 breakfast sandwiches. Wow. We didn't mind the delay. It was declared "very good" which in Reverend-ese (he is the king of understatement) means excellent. Our french toast came out a little later, on plates you'd see in someone's kitchen. I found that charming. The french toast itself is wonderful. They butter it on the grill so it's so well flavored, firm on the outside and tender but not mushy on the inside. Mmmmmmmmm. Scrapple was my second favorite ever, reminded me of my Mom-Mom's, which was very good. Bacon was delectable. Even being very busy with that big order and the diners they had, they were friendly and helpful and made sure we were taken care of. As we paid, we got a full rundown - Closed Sunday, open 6 AM - 5 PM weekdays and 6 AM - 3 PM Saturdays, grill closes 1 hour before they close so the last hour it's cold sandwiches only. They will serve you lunch or breakfast any time, no problem. I mentioned we would be back when we go visit my mom at St. Peter & Paul Cemetery very close by, and he said, yea, I visit my mom there too. Cool. This restaurant has been in business 52 years, and it looks old-style. It was clean, and especially the grill & hood were declared in great shape (The Reverend at one time was a supervisor for a commercial kitchen cleaning company - he is WAY more observant about these things now that he knows what to look for). Tips: It is cash only, and they price French Toast by the slice. Slices are hearty, I ordered two but was full with one. Tips are in a tip jar, be nice, they work hard. This is Philly dining, old-style. You will not find a broccoli rabe and quail egg omelet here, nor will you sit at a cozy two top. Classic Rock on a boom box plays, and yes, there are flats of rolls right behind you and those are wonderful rolls. You will find some genuinely nice people who make damn good food, and you will feel like part of the family when you leave. read more

This is a great find for breakfaat, and I'm sure it flies under the radar. I stopped here twice in the last 5 months, the last time being last week. They have an assortment of items on the menu, and are a basic joint. I stop in here to get some sustenance before bowling next door, so to date, I've only had breakfast stuff. This morning I was a little miffed how long my sausage on a bagel was taking to arrive (though I got my excellent coffee immediately upon sitting down.) When the breakfast sammy arrived, all was forgiven for the wait. This was REAL Italian sausage chopped into 1" chunks and each and every piece was browned and crispy. Sausage like that doesn't cook itself. Someone painstakingly ensured the Maillard reaction was present on every hunk inside (and overflowing outside) my Everything bagel. It was a freaking work of art. Add to that, a staff who (from the owner to line cook) treat you like a family member, and you leave with more than just a breakfast under your belt.
