The following conversation is common all across the Swarthmore campus: "Hey wanna go to dinner?" "Where? Sharples? What is it tonight?" "Pasta bar and dry chicken." "Ew, again? That's the fourth time this week. Want to go to bamboo, the place with average asian food but literally the only restaurant in a five mile radius?" "No, I can't. I ran out of points on the low-points plan that swarthmore forces its freshman to be on." "Aw, shit. Guess we have to go to sharples then." "Hey, it's not too bad. There's meatballs." "Oh, nice. I'm mildly not as disappointed." If it's not dealing with the absurdly crowded cafeteria during the lunch hour and waiting literally twenty minutes for mediocre food, then it's dealing with the angry ice cream lady that constantly screams at you for no reason. (Like, what's up with that? Seriously. She yelled at me for trying to put ice cream on a waffle.) The pizza is mediocre. The jambalaya is completely bland. The grill is okay but always busy during bad food days. During actual good food days, like fish tacos, my god, good luck getting food. For some reason, they sequester everyone into one fucking line. I've seen the line stretch like thirty feet beyond where you get trays. Furthermore, the line moves slow, so you could be standing there waiting for actually half an hour. Don't even mention the "pho" bar. My god, I don't think I've ever seen a dish butchered that badly. The broth is BITTER. BITTER! Why is it bitter??? One more point: the tables are... sticky? I don't know how else to describe it. The table surfaces are weirdly sticky and not smooth. It's as if they don't clean the tables every day and just let everything dry out and condense, forming a thin sticky defensive layer for the table. Swarthmore efficiency and design thinking at its finest. In conclusion, it's kinda mediocre but sometimes it manages to reach average.

My coworker got the big breakfast but subbed out the homefries for corned beef hash. While I'm not a fan of corned beef hash, it looked exactly like how my mom and grandfather like it, with a little bit of crisp to it. The pancake was huge and he said his over medium eggs were cooked exactly like he hoped they would be. Now I just need to plan out my flights so I can come get breakfast here again and try one of the sandwiches, or omelettes, or maybe get French toast again...

We got the booth we wanted, off to a good start. Basic breakfast order, no fuss, server took down all the details. When it comes to my bacon, I prefer crisp - and it was perfect, honestly. Coffee, big mug, hot, robust. My meal did not disappoint in the slightest. Generous serving of potatoes with my eggs (I suggest asking for onions, again, perfect). Except ... My toast. I had to wait for my toast while my breakfast sat. I've been to *many* diners in my life, not the first time I've experienced this, it happens ... but the amount of time I waited for it to come, seemed to suggest there had been an oversight. And I guess that ties into the strongest negative I might mention. There were intervals of waiting that threw off the rhythm of how a diner operates. I needed water my partner needed a refill ... and for a while it seemed like the only way that could happen is if I got up, went to the counter and asked for it. (Not alone in this. A nearby table did exactly that to get what they needed.) Easy fixes, not that big a deal. My first suggestion: Have a big pitcher of water on ice ready at all times. When you see a glass low, go for it. Simple, the mark of a pro. Listen -- I love diners, can't get enough, the more around my neighborhood the better. When we told our server we'd be back, we meant it. Especially for the gelato! Homemade! The sample I tasted, delectable. We all have room for improvement, so no harm no foul. I really need to try dinner at the Delco Diner -- BYOB, c'mon. Support these folks, they're great.

We were seated in the corner by the cookie jars, 3 kids among us. The waitress for some reason could not hear my non-white friend even though she was perfectly audible to me, and I was audible to the waitress (not speaking any louder than my friend). Nonetheless, my friend had to repeat herself more than once, and I felt her guard go up that the treatment was odd. My protective instinct for them (and my child) went up as well. The food took an extremely long time but that can happen at lunch because they are very busy. What was odd was that my friend was given an order of fries she never asked for--I heard her order THREE TIMES and somehow the waitress still did not get it right. I will add that the waitress was extremely preoccupied with a male customer, flirting, giggling and acting like a high schooler (she was 20-something). I get being giddy in a new relationship but it was completely distracting her from her job and was totally inappropriate especially considering all the mistakes she was making. We also had to wait extremely long periods between being given water, ketchup (again, my friend's request), our bill, etc. Worst part, the bill was extremely high and included about $15 more than what we ordered. We were charged for the fries she mistakenly (on purpose?) gave us, and the wrong sandwiches were on there too. You know what I did? I did the "nice white girl" thing and obediently made no fuss and left a tip that waitress never deserved. However I did attempt to call them multiple times in the days after but no one picked up during lunch hours when I called. They have no email address I could find to show my receipt and as the days passed I had a million other things to do as the mom of a young child so that's how it goes when a business has no email in the 21st Century. We were treated like crap and overcharged. I realized all my prior visits were with my family or extended family, all white people. Childhood visits were with a white friend who lives nearby, and her white family. You can see in photos and reviews I have been to this place many times going back to my childhood, but I haven't returned since and I will never go back. I got a good sense of how it feels when "odd" passive aggressive behavior seems to happen around non-white people, and yes it could be honest mistakes (a series of them aimed at my non-white friend) or it could be discriminatory. It could be that one waitress's attitude is irreflective of the establishment but this is what happened at this establishment, and the result is we were treated deplorably and I have no reason to ever return. They owe me an overcharge of $15 plus the unfairly high tip I left that horrible waitress!
