I'm giving it a 5 star for this inn's dog friendliness and reasonable $25/night dog fee. The price per night includes parking and breakfast. The frittatas were delicious and homemade. They had 2 options: meat and vegetarian. Also offered gluten-free bread. Staff members were very friendly, down to earth and very accommodating. Housekeeping cleaned our Lavender mini suite every day during our stay. Can't beat the location, which was near downtown Carmel with upscale & casual restaurants and shops. The inn was across the street from the police station which made us feel safe. We walked to Carmel Beach from the inn for about 0.5 mile. Bruno's grocery store had delicious freshly made deli sandwiches, tri-tip, brisket and ribs. Our room had a King bed, loveseat, dining area, mini fridge, and a microwave. The enclosed patio was a big plus. We ate our breakfast in our patio dining area. The garden was full of succulents! Will stay there again! read more

Stayed here for 3 days for a vacation. The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. The morning breakfast is ok and simple. The price was ok. The employees are very nice and friendly. My only complaint is since my room was street side, you could really hear everyone walking by who talks, or bigger cars. I would gladly stay here again. I took a small one day getaway to Carmel over the weekend and stayed at the Carmel Garden Inn. It was such a pretty room in such a gorgeous area of Carmel, so close to all the fun stuff. However, my allergies were horrible over my stay. I looked under the beds and touched some of the decor and it was all incredibly dusty. However the service was so friendly and it was very aesthetic. I was also able to check in a little earlier. Breakfast was at 8am the next day and when I went at around 8:55-9am the breakfast still wasn't ready. There were a few families waiting around for it as well. A pleasant stay, wouldn't recommend if you have serious seasonal, environmental or dust mite allergies. read more

We had a nice time however you have to understand the exterior is shabby chic cute with the emphasis on the first word. The whole experience for us is what merits a 4 star rating. Dog friendly, extra large room, small kitchen, small enclosed porch, fireplace. The frittata breakfasts and coffees were terrific. Easy walking to downtown, pretty quiet, (though there was some noise one nite at 4:30 AM from the auto repair down the street, a beep beeping from a tow truck delivery and some hammering to free a chain.) Easy exit back out of town to get to other places in the area. On the whole, if I had a dog I would stay there again, if I had more money and no dog I'd try another place. read more

The location is really close to shops and our room was easy to access. Had no issue with parking I do wish the dog area was filled with grass not dirt but it worked out. I am giving 3 stars only because we got to our room and it smelled entirely of smoke. We stayed here in March and it was absolutely lovely. The staff were very friendly and accommodating when arriving early. They had shown us to our room and recommended nearby restaurants and boutiques. The room itself was gorgeous, especially loved the awning windows and the beautiful wooden beams. There was also a fireplace which made the room also quite cozy! The only downside was no AC (but the windows kept the room breezy), neither a microwave, and the smell of firewood was evident but we didn't quite mind. The time of year we had visited, there wasn't a need for AC and we had actually used the small in-wall space heater. The bathroom was spacious and the water pressure and temp was perfect! The bed was also incredibly comfortable after walking up and down Ocean Ave and spending the day at the beach! The kitchenette and complimentary local coffee was the perfect start to a slow costal morning. And if staying in; they offer free use of a shared Hulu account to finish binge watching your shows while snacking on your fudge from the Cottage of Sweets (at least that's what we did!) Review of Carmel Garden Inn (September 2025 - Fuchsia Mini-Suite) We stayed in the Fuchsia mini-suite, which sounded wonderful on paper: private patio, king bed with "deluxe linens," wood-burning fireplace, kitchenette, and a "newly remodeled" bathroom. Unfortunately, the reality was very different. The good: * The patio space was nice. * The room itself was large, with a convenient little sitting area in the kitchenette. The bad: * Maintenance is clearly being neglected. It feels like the rooms are just rented out without proper upkeep, yet the rates charged are very high. * The "newly remodeled" bathroom was already showing mold in the shower. The wash basin had been broken and was simply glued back together -- unacceptable for a place at this price point. * The so-called "deluxe linens" were shocking -- our bed sheets were full of holes. * The bath towels were so old that the stitching along the edges was completely frayed. * The patio looked tired and in need of repairs and fresh paint. Most of the plants on the patio were very sad-looking and clearly in need of care and attention. * The inn invites guests to "join us for a glass of wine and light snack in the lobby between 3-5 pm." We went at 4:00 pm and found nothing set out. After asking the very helpful young man on duty, he offered us a glass of red and white wine -- but explained there was no cheese or salami left, only grapes. This was on a Saturday, when the inn was fully booked. Very strange to extend the invitation but not provide what's promised. To make it worse, the wine tasted so poor we couldn't drink it. The bigger issue: On their homepage they highlight all their awards -- six-time winners of the "Best Inn/B&B" award from The Carmel Pine Cone most recently in 2024 and recipients of the Traveller's Choice award,. But honestly, if they want to keep earning awards like these, they really need to do something about the state of the property. Right now, it simply doesn't live up to the reputation they're advertising. Bottom line: This place could be charming, but the lack of care, upkeep, and attention to detail makes it feel run-down and overpriced. At these rates, guests should expect far better than moldy bathrooms, hole-ridden sheets, worn-out towels, tired-looking patios, and undrinkable wine. read more

Carmel Garden Inn is the sweetest Bed and Breakfast. Situated in the middle of the "Carmel urban forest" the Carmel Garden Inn is a little rustic and it may not be for everyone...but it IS a LOVELY stay for anyone looking for simple, cozy, charming, near downtown, near parks, with friendly service and very dog friendly. My husband, dog and I were going on a long weekend getaway and found the Carmel Garden Inn during our search for a dog-friendly hotel in Carmel. We loved this place! Check-in was a breeze and the person at the desk greeted us with a friendly welcome, gave us a quick orientation/need-to-know about what's in the neighborhood with a map and walked us to our room. Our doggo was even greeted with a dog biscuit. We stayed in the Heather mini-suite that had all of the spaces a typical mini-suite has to offer plus a gated private patio with a table and chairs. The room had a fireplace that we didn't use, but I'm sure it would be really nice during the colder winter months. The room also had a TV with a Roku device, a small refrigerator, microwave, wet bar, king sized bed and a couch. It was everything we needed for our weekend getaway with a dog. During our stay, the Inn offered a breakfast from 8-10am with coffee, tea, fruit, toast, a pastry and two kinds of frittatas (which were delicious, by the way). From 3-5pm, they offered a self-serve happy hour with wine, cheese, salami, pita, hummus, spinach artichoke dip and grapes. (Pro tip: grab one of the available trays and enjoy breakfast or the wine and cheese on your private patio.) I thought this was a lovely touch. There is a parking lot for guests as well as plenty of street parking. There is a cute market with all of your travel needs and groceries just two blocks away on 6th Ave and Junipero. The downtown area, with restaurants, art and shopping is within walking distance - just a few blocks away. Plus, the area around the Inn is very safe...especially with a police station just down the block. (We live in San Francisco and felt comfortable at the Inn and in the area.) Next time we're in the Carmel/Pacific Grove/Monterey area, this will be the first place we will look into again. Thanks for the great experience! read more

My husband and I go to carmel frequently (we even got engaged here back in 2020). Although we come to Carmel often, we have never stayed here until recently. My husband, our 3 month old daughter, our dog and my mom recently stayed for mom's birthday trip and it was magical. My mom hasn't really left the house since my dad died 3 years ago and I wanted her to experience the magic of carmel-she reluctantly agreed and I honestly thought she would bail on the trip so I was excited to find out I could potentially cancel without any fees up to a few days before our trip. Good news was my mom didn't bail, so we got to go on our trip and stay here! We really enjoyed the gardens and ambiance and our room was a good size for 3 adults a baby and a dog we also really liked that they had breakfast which was pretty delicious. My mom would wake up in the morning and stroll the neighborhood around the inn and enjoyed it. Our stay was excellent and my mom keeps talking about how much she enjoyed her trip and this place-I am hoping we can make it a yearly tradition for her birthday! read more

My daughter set up reservations for two rooms and three days early April, to celebrate her birthday. We arrived early and were originally told they did not have our reservations. Then we're told they found them. We were then told Bookings double booked reservations for Memorial holiday weekend. They gave our rooms to others that booked in May...not good! We spent several hours trying to sort out... We spent over 8 hours of our holiday time working to fix the situation. We had minimal assistance from the Hotel manager, however, he did place us in another residence at his cost for one night but, what do we do about the next two nights? I cannot say enough good things about this Inn! So my friend booked 2 rooms for Valentine's Day weekend one for him and his GF and my husband and I, we were going to help him with his surprise proposal. Both rooms were under different names and when I called on our way out there to give a run down of what was going on I spoke with the manager (forgive me I cannot remember the gentleman's name) and I was prepared to have to explain this 3/4+ times. But he understood and offered to help anyway he could so that the GF wouldn't suspect anything with a double room. We get there he let's us check both rooms in helps with a few things and then put everything back as if we were never there! The rooms are super cute and cozy, with a fireplace and a kitchenette. There is plenty of firewood and you may ask for more if needed. I love that its dog friendly and has a patio for them to be outside but close to you still. They delivered a complimentary breakfast to our room in the morning, which was delicious!! Its close to the beach and shoppes. There is a walk up of stairs They make a frittata mushroom and/or waffles the morning and have cheese and wine in the late afternoon. Best part 7 of the 10 rooms are dog friendly :) The people that run this place are amazing! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! My hubby and I were so disappointed with this Carmel Garden Inn. First off, the room was very dated and looked to not have been updated since 1990, so quaint it was NOT!!! The room was under 200 square Ft, very tiny so with 2 adults and 1 dog it was totally cramped, not to mention the linens were your grandmas bedding. Well over $250 per night, which is way over priced for a room here. Not to mention we were charged $25 extra for a pet fee. Why, I have no clue. The website clearly states "Many of our rooms are designated pet friendly. Sheeted dog beds, food and water bowls, treats are available by request. Please let us know in the notes when you make your reservation... we understand. We are dog people, too." When I inquired at the front desk. I was told nothing extra is given for dogs. I stated the website says the hotel gives out extras for pets. Very rudely, i was told they couldn't due to Covid. Wow, we stayed on May 22, 2021 - over a year into Covid. Breakfast is given, but a dog treat can't be given? Glass cups are in room for coffee and not paper cups, so how much do they care about Covid restrictions? They clearly can reuse the glasses so why can't they reuse the dog bowls and beds? Now, after reading the website, I'm even more upset. We were in the "Iris" room which the website clearly states is NOT dog friendly. Why were we put in a non dog friendly room? I immediately emailed the hotel after booking our reservation to let them know we would be coming in with our dog. Their response back was when I was told about the $25 extra pet charge. It would have been nice to know no dog rooms were available and so I was given an opportunity to look for another hotel or to stay with my current booking. So not only did the hotel take extra money from us and give us nothing in return for it but we were in a room not for dogs. Where did this $25 extra fee go towards? I feel HAD. I will NOT be back. Stay clear of this place especially if you have a dog. However, Carmel by the Sea is absolutely stunning and the town has abundance of hotels. Walking around, I saw many vacancy signs. read more

No screens on living room windows, bugs come in to help themselves, breakfast is the worst ,they need to learn how to cook! We were greeted by a rude and unwelcoming front desk and were required to pay in full for our four-night stay. After we paid in full, we were told that our room was next to the laundry facility and the patio would be too loud and prevent us from using the patio from 11 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon. If i had been told before paying in full that our patio and room were next to loud washing machines and dryers, I would have not booked the room. We loved our stay at Carmel Garden Inn. Everything was perfect. The hotel is situated on a very quiet street but very central and walking distance to everything. It was very quiet at night and the bed was super comfortable, so we slept very well. Why only three stars? There is a $150 cleaning fee for cleaning any evidence of pet-on-bed or furniture. Unable to find any reference to the fee anywhere on their site. Kept me pretty anxious, and that's not why we go away to stay at a hotel. Be aware. Other than that Big Red Flag, the complimentary food in the morning was very nice. We brought our own coffee, otherwise there is a lilliputian coffee maker and a bag each of decaf and high-test coffee in the kitchenette. The room was wood paneled and cozy, with a fireplace and wood ready to light. The tiny TV and vcr was handy, and there were maybe 40 VHS movies from which to choose. Even though there was "an event" at the youth center right across the tiny street from the rooms, and the "event" meant noise through 10pm+ that first night (and we could not have been more tired), all in all it was a pleasant experience. The bathroom was very narrow with a wall-length mirror and more lights than I've seen since Broadway, so unless you're thin or newlyweds, you may have to back out in order to let your spouse in. beep, beep, beep "I'm backing out, Hon!" Very nice plant landscaping and a woodsy all-over nice place to stay. I would give the overly soft bed a 4 out of 10 as far as comfort, but that is my personal preference. Would I stay there again? Stayed here about 2 years ago. We were blessed with great friends who bought us a 2 night stay here, Overall we had a great experience. As far as location its on the top left side of the Carmel by the sea area. So its definitely not walking distance to the beach unless your ready for a long hike! The room was dated but it had two big beds, a little kitchen area, a peaceful private patio, a fireplace, and a small bathroom. The bathroom was my least favorite part. I had issues with the shower. The common area was also very pretty. Lots of foliage and fountains. Very tranquil. Every morning we woke up to a nice customized breakfast delivered to our room. Even our dog got some breakfast! We loved our stay at this little locally owned hotel. The staff/owners were so kind and welcoming. For example, the owner dropped what he was doing to get us some coffee in the middle of the afternoon. We stayed in the violet room, which was decorated in a Victorian style. Here are the pros and cons of our stay: Pros: -Super friendly -Dogs allowed -1/2 block away is a small park for the dog to go potty -Homemade breakfast (frittata, breakfast casserole, banana bread, hard boiled eggs, granola, fruit, cranberry and orange juice) -Fully stocked fireplace in the room ready to be lit -Decent sized room -Spotlessly clean -Fridge in the room -Coffee in the room with 3 types of creamers (liquid, not the powdered type) -DVD player and basic cable -3 blocks from Ocean drive -Comfy bed with soft linens -Wine and cheese hours (local white and red options and brie and dubliner cheese) -Free fast wifi Cons: -The rooms are right up against the sidewalk, so you can hear people getting in and out of cars. This was not a big issue since there was not a lot of traffic -The bathroom was small but we didn't care Overall, you can tell these folks put a lot of thought into your stay. For example, your room key comes with a small LED flashlight because there are no street lights in Carmel. This hotel is in a great location, a great value, with dogs welcomed in some rooms. Closer to 4.5 stars because Curtis was a very attentive host. He and Holly [she's a teacher] and the staff go all out for breakfast and to address issues. Wood-burning fireplace is a nice feature, and the outdoor patios are convenient. Small parking lot, but street parking is easy - and the police station is at the end of the block! Easy walk downhill to the heart of town and the beach. Only suggestion is for the cleaning crew to dip the shower head in bleach to get rid of some buildup; likewise, a paper towel dipped in bleach placed along some of the tub grout would be helpful. With tax, just over $800 for two nights, but it's Carmel, after all. Don't skip nearby 17-Mile Drive into Pebble Beach - well worth the $11.25 fee. Yes, we would stay here again. read more

We stayed for one night in the Fuschia room. Check in was easy, we met Julian, the owner. What a delightful man he is, he made sure we knew about the wine and cheese tasting that began at 4:00. We went down to the main lobby at 4:30, had some wine and cheese and crackers, talked with Julian some more, he told us his story, treated us like family, it was wonderful. He gave us many recommendations for dinner and shopping also. Our room was fantastic, huge King bed, fireplace with fire already laid, just needed a match if we wanted it. Our room had a private little patio, that was a nice touch. Bathroom is updated. Small sitting area in the room where the coffee and microwave are. Bottom line is, this is a great place to stay, centrally located, a block from Ocean Ave walking distance from everything you need. As far as family-run B&Bs go, Carmel Garden Inn sets the standard! The Inn is situated on the top of a carmel hill, which descends into the downtown and the ocean. It's about a 15 minute downhill walk to downtown, 30 min walk to the ocean. There are five parking spaces available for guests to leave their cars for no additional charge. A benefit to this location is that you really don't need your car for the duration of your trip! The lobby has several little dining tables that seat a couple. Between the hours of 5-7pm, the B&B offers a selection of red and white wine as well as cheese and crackers. (*Also homemade chocolate chip cookies!!!) There is a tower of DVDs that are open for guest enjoyment. *Note, there aren't many "new" DVDs. The B&B includes a homemade breakfast every morning between 8am-10am. They provide eggs made to order, yoplait yogurt, cereal, juice, coffee and fruit. The staff is SO FRIENDLY!!! You can tell the entire staff is passionate about their B&B and making you feel like you came to visit family. Even to the last detail of including a small LED light on your room key so that you may navigate Carmel's sans street light paths. The suite my family stayed in was clean, roomy and had a fireplace ready to ignite! They set up the fire for you, all you have to do is use the available matches on the mantle and light the newspaper under the logs. That nice touch of a cottage get-away is satisfied with their fireplace amenity. Finally, price. With a AAA discount, the Carmel Garden Inn is a FAR better value than the surrounding hotels and B&Bs. I really wanted to give this place a high rating! Let's start with the GOOD: Dog-friendly! All wood floors made this a perfect place for our sandy dog. Location! This place is far enough from town making parking easy. But it's close enough to town to walk everywhere. Housekeeping! The wonderful staff that cleaned the room every day did an amazing job. Our dog sheds SO much, and they kept the room spotless. Now for the BAD: PLEASE update the bathrooms! I wasn't expecting much. I was expecting the bathroom to be tiny (it was). I was expecting it to look outdated (it did). I was even expecting the ANTS! (They were everywhere). But at the price the Inn charges, they could at least afford to have proper drainage! The shower backed up every time. If this was my home, I would have this fixed immediately. Also, the showerhead was so low; my husband had to duck to wash his hair. The shower hot/cold water knobs were broken too. Again, this is an easy fix that any average person would fix in their own home! The bathroom sink water came out in a trickle, and the facet knobs were broken. Now let's talk about the fact that the room next door to us was being worked on (painted). Every morning we were awakened to the sound of the handyman working on the room, and the strong smell of paint coming through the window. We should have been notified that this was going to happen! I get migraines and smells impact me greatly. The real problem came when, on the morning of our last day, we were rudely awakened by the handyman DRILLING on the wall. SO much for relaxing. And, no, the room next door wasn't getting an updated bathroom, just paint. When I informed the front desk, she just said "Ok, sorry" like I was bothering her. BAD BUSINESS. This is a great place to stay if you visit Carmel. The Inn is on a quiet street and you can easily walk to the downtown area and even the beach if you can walk a mile. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The room has a fireplace and they provide free firewood. They provide homemade treats during the breakfast period and the wine and cheese time. We sampled frittata, blueberry coffee cake, rosemary shortbread cookies, and lemon bars in the last couple of days. We have a small private patio area adjacent to our room which is great if you have dogs. There is also a parking area right on the property which is important in Carmel. The good,the bad and the ugly!!! I do not understand the good reviews on this place, I went by these reviews and picked this Inn !!! Big mistake!!! The inn was close to everything, walking distance that was great and no problem with parking, The room itself was clean and smelled like smoke from a smoky fire somebody probably had the night before. The room was a little worn, and don't go in the closet old and broken, keep clothes in luggage. The lighting above our head had signs of electrical issues, burns was afraid to turn on at night. The bathroom was fairly new , no storage to hold much other than a toothbrush, and bathroom window has view of furniture pile up in shed. The food was not as described, wine and few crackers on table in the afternoon , no special lemon bars or sweets as described. Breakfast not much of choice, fruit loops in large bowl to scoop out, frittata heated up, stale fruit bread. The prior reviews also stated friendly innkeepers, did not see that either. Ok for one night I guess , dog friendly, small yard for dog, we will not be staying here again. read more

They do a great job selling this place with the carefully taken pictures and descriptions. We had no major issues but wouldn't stay again. On the plus side, they are friendly. I didn't love the fact I had to check with them to see if they wanted to know dietary restrictions. Got a very fun "absolutely. We want you happy, not dead" answer. With that said, the breakfast is the worst we have had at a B&B. Very cafeteria-ish in its quality and they are skimpy on what they put out. The main course is not on the counter - they bring it to you and manage the portions that way. Hampton Inns have better spreads. The room is small and old, even with the updates they made. My wife did not like it at all. The air is controlled by an old-fashion type contraption and sometimes stuff like that is quaint, and sometimes it is just inconvenient. It was the latter. The gardens are nice, but they are small and claustrophobic. Again, we'll seek other places on our next trip. read more

If you are considering staying here, do it!! I was a little hesitant as I typically gravitate towards more modern/boutique hotels and inns, but was pleasantly surprised with this quaint, charming inn. The value is great considering the location, included homemade breakfast and wine and cheese happy hour. The room felt welcoming and and clean. We loved being able to light a fire in the fire place in the room (a real wood fire!) that was all setup and ready for us to light, such a treat after a chilly night exploring downtown. Diana was extremely pleasant and gave wonderful recommendations and made us feel at home right away. Would stay again and recommend!! read more
