Went here for lunch, back to the kitchen of satan himself. It was about 120 degrees and diabolically nasty. Who knew, but turns out the dark lord is a balding, sweaty "chef" who does not follow directions, or the health code, very closely. I ordered a frito pie burger with no onion. He said it would be ready in "17 minutes". We queried him about this peculiarly specific ETA and he said all the other chefs say 15 minutes but that's not quite long enough. At least he values time precision, which I guess makes sense given the importance of timing in the negotiation of soul-based transactions. 17.5 minutes of waiting later, we returned to the kitchen. The evil one put up my burger, and said something like "sorry, forgot about the onions. They're almost all off now though." Then he noticed another onion on my burger, lifted off the top and proceeded to DIG THROUGH THE CHEESE WITH HIS SWEAT-RIDDEN CLAWS OF DOOM, picking off little bits of onion. Which I'm pretty sure he had been doing for at least 30 seconds before I came into the kitchen. I had to pull away my tray to stop him. What's crazier than that is that I was so hungry that I actually took a bite of the sweato-pie burger. A frito pie burger is a great idea and I really wanted to like it even after the onion debacle. Since the kitchen was as hot as an autoclave it probably killed most of the bacteria anyway. It was about a 3 star burger. Plus 1 star for celebrity chef; negative 3 stars for sweat content. As a tourist in Austin, I was very pleased to have stumbled across this bar. First of all, you must realize it is a dive bar. And they make no effort to be sleek or popular. Lots of stuff to look at on the walls, way above average music, and a very nice Portobello Mushroom Burger. read more

This is going to be straight to the point. I tested the waters with a $4 plain slice during lunch. The pizza was terrible. It was very doughy, the cheese was meh, and the sauce was nonexistent and there was almost no sauce on my pizza slice the little bit of sauce I did get was tasteless. Since I'm always in the mood for Pantera, Black Sabbath, Slayer, and weird movies on the patio...I'm always in the mood for Jackalope. One of the few good bars on dirty 6th for locals. I rarely find myself on dirty. In my early 20s I wouldn't have even noticed this bar because this isn't where the early 20s crowd hangs, unless you're dying to take a pic with the jackalope at the entrance. Since I've been grown, Jackalope feeds my belly and my thirst quite well. Thanks for always serving up kick ass tunes on the patio, serving my favorite food (pizza) and having local brews on draft. They even have a fun cocktails menu for when you're feeling kinda froufrou. Tip: seating inside along the walls are only for customers who plan to order food. read more

Pro tip - don't order the veggie patty. Although it had great flavor the patty completely broke apart. I asked the waitress if she knew it would break apart and said yes but failed to tell us before we ordered... why pay a $1 more for something that can't even be eaten???? The place was promising upon entering but the bathrooms reeked. It's like the smell of pee soaked into the wood floors. The waitress was unnecessarily rude while we ordered food. We had to ask her to check on it after waiting 50 minutes. The food was warm like it had been sitting under heat lamps for 10 minutes (this was on a slow Tuesday at 3pm...). On a street that reminded me of where I used to frequent when I was in college..back when I used to stumble down the street wasted and was ok with a fratty quotient of people...lies this punk rock, dark, loud bar...with a great back room/patio. It seemed like a place we should be. It seemed like this place had a personality and wasn't where the lemmings went. When we first walked in, I thought it was a bit loud...but once we walked through the door towards the back, opened up the door and entered the patio...i was happy. There were chair swings, and stools on a slope, and the Simpsons Movie playing on the television. Three beers for eight dollars didnt make this place too shabby either. So spicy, so meaty, not fatty--perfection. On Wednesday's, they have half price burgers and the burgers are AMAZE. The blue cheese burger or chipotle burger is the bomb. On Tuesdays, two-for-one pizza is where to be. The pizza rivals Homeslice, for sure. On Thursdays, they have pint night. I recommend meeting at Festival Beach for the Thursday Night Social Ride with Social Cycling Austin and then heading over to The Jackalope for some pint night. The only reason I give it 4/5 stars is because the service can be shitty at times. The crowd is punk rock/eccentric and awesome. The food is really good. Me and my also rather conservatively dressed coworkers in town for a conference were in stimulation overload at this unique punk bar. It was quite a transition form the bluesy jam were were listening to at Nuno's, where we ran into our waitress from earlier in the night (more on Crystal the doll later!) and followed her along to Jackalope. Roller girls and Helldorados and punk music, oh my! I was suddenly Dorothy from California in the coolest Wizard of Oz. 1st, the roller girls--how bad ass is that? You won't find them at Zeitgeist in San Francisco! 2nd, the Helldorado, for professional drinkers only--Crystal required us to order it (twist my rubber arm). A gynormous martini glass with a concoction that may or may not have made some people miss part of their conference the next day. 3rd, the music--even dressed like a corporate tool, I can still enjoy the Fishbone and Bad Brains and The Accused of my youth. The Jackalope and the cool-as-hell people there are yet more examples of what makes Austin my home away from home. We stopped in for a beer and lunch. I have to admit I'm not much for stepping outside my comfort area. I tried my daughters beer, she had the Pear Ale and it was good. I had Blood Orange Ale and it was fantastic! The fries at the bar were cooked to perfection. Crispy goodness! Hubby has a burger and he enjoyed it. They deal with the worst of the worst drunks and do it efficiently (and generally speaking... they are all great looking. Male and female alike). The bouncers are fast to toss drunks, Frat Guys are generally encouraged to leave, drunk girls are removed quickly. The only problem I have with Jackalope is it's location... because of the tourists. Went there the other night, saw the bouncers throw someone around who wasn't even fighting back. I've seen stupid fights before, who hasn't (dirty 6th!)? I don't know what happened, but the guys were really rough, using excessive force on a smaller guy, and the manager (long blonde hair) at the time looked to be coked out of his mind. This place sucks. One of the bartenders (Claire) was drunk and throwing up in the bathroom and then decided to pick a fight with one of my friends while we were in there. My friend didn't say anything rude to her, cuss, or even raise her voice but Claire ran to her manager to get our group kicked out. Pathetic. Claire, you're a joke and so is management for kicking us out for NO REASON. Maybe you guys shouldn't let your staff drink on the job or at least hire people that can handle their alcohol. read more

This place just became our ladies night diver bar. Wednesdays they have buy one burger get one free. They are delicious. I got the cheeseburger which was a nice classic HUGE burger, but my friend Kim got *the* best blue cheese burger. The best ever. Anyway, pints are $2.50 until 10. This is the latest happy hour I have heard of and believe me, us ladies love our happy hours. One of the bartenders there, Oliver, is really nice and outgoing. I liked this place a lot more years ago when it was a dive bar, it made the inconsistent service from the bartenders tolerable, even understandable. Let me share my two most recent experiences with you. I met up with some friends that were sitting at the bar on the dark-side inside. I understand that this is a huge bar but at one point I counted 5 bartenders on the other-side of the bar. So, naturally I decided to see how long it would take for any of the many bartenders that were standing around together to walk over and ask me if I would like a drink. The bar wasn't busy. One bartender even looked over made eye contact and walked away. Clearly these guys just come to work to pour drinks and make as little contact as possible with customers. When my friends glasses were empty 25 minutes later, three bartenders came by one after another to offer up their fine services. My most recent expedition was even more hilarious. 1AM on a Sunday night, the inside bar is jamming out to Journey so we head to the outside bar. The bartender outside was chatting up with some friends. After standing around for a minute, the bartender looked over at us and proceeded to clean his eye-glasses then go back to talking to his friend seated directly across from him at the bar. By this time the music inside was tolerable and a drink was quickly served to us. For years a it's been a joke that to work at the Jackalope you have to be good at crossing your arms, turning your back to the customer and watching movies. Those were the good old days. read more

My partner and I will be moving to Austin from Denver in August, so we decided to make a trip out before hand to check it out. On this trip, one of the places we visited was the Jackalope after reading some pretty positive Yelp reviews regarding their pizza in particular. While the pizza was super delicious (extra thin crust, slightly sweet sauce, and the perfect cheese to garlic ratio) the service was really, really, really flippin' terrible. Perhaps I was a bit naive after hearing all about Austin's warm southern hospitality, and thus I was expecting some sort of infectious generosity of spirit. This, as was mentioned, was definitely not our experience. Though the guy who took our pizza order was pretty alright, the bartenders were exceptionally lame. Firstly, both my partner and I were ignored for a collective 20 minutes or so when separately going to the bar to place drink orders. On my trip, I repeatedly made eye contact with some punk ass washing glasses who I assumed was one of the three bartenders manning the double-sided bar. This guy, after ever so slightly acknowledging my presence with sidelong, reluctant glances, proceeded to ignore me - even when resentfully placing clean glasses nearby where I was standing - for the entirety of my residence standing at the bar. There was no "Someone will be right with you" or "How's it going? Let me finish up with this and I'll take your drink order" or anything. I eventually gave up, and left the bar area sans hoppy beverages. When my partner ordered our first round of drinks he too was ignored for a ridiculously long time. Then, after finally getting a different bartender to take his order, he then was made to wait forever to actually get the drinks despite the fact that the bartender did not appear to be busy. Maybe there is some sort of secret Austin way of ordering a drink that my partner and I are not privy to, but I'm guessing that's probably not the case. More likely, the bartenders at Jackalope are just douches. **Edit 7/7/11** Wow, so since posting this review last night at 1:00, I have received not one but THREE messages from various employees at the Jackalope apologizing for my partner's and my experience. Perhaps we just caught them on an off day, as their yelp prowess suggests they are exceptionally invested in their customers' happiness. This place doesn't have the beer I like. Everytime I go I end up on a stool that wobbles and I feel as if I am going to fall off. It is always dark inside and the decor seems like that of some lame old Mexican type Western (if such a thing exists). That being said I can't stop coming back to this place. For all it's downfalls there is a certain charm to the place. The bartenders are all nice and will service you within a reasonable amount of time (ie you don't have to be excessively pretty or you don't have to flash a $20 to get quicker service). They have a few pool tables here and the customers seem more like regulars than your typical frat boy or tourist type. One big positive of the Jackalope is that one day when me and a friend were looking for a place to drink at 1pm every bar seemed to be closed. Not the Jackalope. They support alcoholics like a real bar should. No waiting for the kids to get out of class before they open up there doors. If not for the negatives listed above I think this might just be the best bar to grab a drink at. Definitely suggest checking it out at least once to see if you get pulled into the charm of the Lope. read more

The burgers are AWESOME!! One of the best in town hands down...why the 2 star review then? The staff sucks...they are extremely rude, and I'm not just talking about an isolated incident...we've experienced it several times...I wouldn't step foot in that place if it wasn't for the fantastic food. One incident in particular, I ordered a basket of fries with my burger...they didn't come out when the cook delivered the food...I told him I had ordered fries...he argued that he brought every thing out that was on the ticket...no big deal, it happens, but when I asked him to add them, he got really defensive and started arguing with me about how I never ordered them in the first place...I finally just said forget it because I was starting to get mad...about 5 minutes later, a waitress brought out a basket of fries, tapped me on the shoulder, and said "will this make you happy sweetheart?" in the most sarcastic tone I've heard in a while...completely uncalled for! I am officially a hungover happy fan of this establishment. Went here on a Monday and for some reason they were having happy hour pricing all night, as such I had far too many $2.50 beers. The atmosphere is kitschy and dark, the music is good, and there are very few brohoes to ruin a perfectly good evening. The booze aside, this place has some of the best and most reasonably priced bar food I've had in a long time. Nothing was frozen or from a can (I think, and if so they covered it up very well), and my Jerk chicken sandwich was huge and perfect after a few cold ones. Voted the best dive bar in Austin and so well-deserved. The Jackalope is a laid-back, no attitude oasis in amongst 6th street's otherwise bland offerings. After two nights of sucking up attitude at the surrounding cookie cutter student and tourist bars, the Jackalope's tatted up staff with zero ego and a positively friendly attitude would have been enough to get the place five stars. Doesn't matter how you dress, they'll make you feel welcome. However, the star of the show for me was the pulled pork sandwich. Succulent and delicious, it was outrageously good, one of the best I have ever eaten and just the sort of food you go to a dive bar for. Throw in a pool table, some TVs out the back if that's your thing, and a patio with a second bar, what's not to like? read more

I find that the bar staff here can be a bit snooty. If I walk in not wearing one of my pearl snaps or if it happens to be a day I am dressed up I can never get them to serve me a drink. They see me but they choose not to come over and serve me. If it was not for their awesome food I would not even deal with the place. The food is awesome! All sorts of delicious sandwiches and burgers. To top it off they have the gift from the gods... DEEP FRIED CANDY BARS! Thats right, a frozen snickers, covered in batter then deep fried till its nice and melted. The crowd is an interesting group but is a group that is not all about getting drunk then fighting with their bud outside. Drinks are strong and are priced decently. The huge Jackalope in the window caught my attention right away, so of course I HAD to go inside and take a picture on top of the darn thing! However, it came with rules, one being that you physically had to have a drink in your hand in order to sit on it. In I Went! Plus, to top it off, I also needed to sit down somewhere to charge my phone. Immediately my boyfriend went to find a waitress and he asked her to sit us somewhere where they was an outlet available. Right away, she brought us to a booth in the back, Booths are spacious and have some lovely fake pictures of women and their knockers plastered on the wall which I thought was pretty hilarious. My boyfriend then decided to ask the waitress what drink they were known for, and right away she pointed to a drink on the menu called the Helldorado. According to the menu, you needed at least two people to order the drink and it was suppose to taste like a fruit punch martini. It was brought to our table and this thing was HUGE! Like a jumbo martini glass with two gigantic straws sticking out of it. I took a sip, a very sugary drink which had a lot of club soda in it. I would say a fun drink for college students to enjoy. I am 25 and was asking myself why the heck I was even drinking this thing. However, I guess it was cool for the experience, but for $17.00 there was definitely not enough liquor in it especially for two people. Since I finally had my drink, I was able to get on top of that huge Jackalope and take my picture. And for those of you who are wondering, yes, it was just as awesome as it sounds, especially after a night of bar hoping. There was also a pool table inside as well. Very cheap, and the sticks were all broken but usable. The back porch was very nice though! I would have been content just hanging out there all night. I like the layout of this bar. It's giant. It has two rooms that are both intersected by the bar so they are open to one another. This also means you can start a tab at one side and close it on the other if you don't want to fight your way back over to the show side. Is this always a music venue? I have no idea because the only times I've been were during SXSW when everything is a music venue, even people's houses. Other than that, the things I noticed were that it's kind of dark which makes it feel like it might be dingy, but who knows if that's true all of the time. I'm pretty torn on this place and I still can't understand why some people make this their hang out spot. On the positive note, their pizzas are great and their burgers are pretty dang good (Casino el Camino has them beat). The only caveat is that you've gotta order a whole fresh pie to really get a good slice. Stay away from the window slices if you can. Plus their house/specialty pizzas are pretty awesome. (Garlic Lover will be the death of me) On the down note, the bartenders there are just unpleasant. Always, with very little exception. It gets me down and makes me feel like I'M the jerk. I don't expect or even want overly friendly/bubbly, but it makes me feel like I prefaced my drink order by telling them someone died making every thing they have to do awful and painful. When I first moved here, I probably would have given the Jackalope at least 4 stars, mainly because I was excited to find a non-shiny-shirt bar on Crunk Street. It's an easy place to miss as you won't find dudes barking about the shot specials when you walk by. I've had nice times there, cool vibe / great outdoor area, but my experience there this past Sunday drops em to a 3 in my book: - Granted it was the Sunday of ACL, but i've seen the place more crowded on Thursday weeknight. We apparently couldn't order burgers for 30-40 minutes because they were so backed up (we saw three burgers on the grill) and could we all please leave and come back to order because we're stressing them out by standing and waiting. So we had some of the pizza slices instead which we waited too long for, then we had some beers which we waited too long for. - They play some pretty wack horror movies on the TV's. It has been entertaining for me in the past but this past Sunday, they played a movie that was just straight nasty. Granted, I may be guilty of being the sensitive-artist-in-glasses type and I won't go into the details. Let's just say there was a scene in which involved some ghouls drilling a vice into a lady's mouth and then stabbing her. Dude. Like, total buzzkill. read more

This place always felt like a larger corporately run Casino el Camino to me when I lived here. That being said, I stopped in while in town last week on a Monday night and was pretty pleased with the experience. The bartenders were cool, Evil Dead was on the TV, and Bulleits were $3.25 all night. That's a recipe for a pretty kickass bar and a pretty bad hangover the next day. I'd say there are much MUCH worse options on 6th street, and if I lived in Austin again I'd probably make this my standard backup to Casino if I was downtown. read more

Just realized I never even wrote a review for this place yet, and I've been coming here for years! Well gosh darn it it's time to remedy that. Jackalope is the best bar to go to on 6th street. They maybe a little bit on the pricy side, but they make up for it with quantity giving you large helpings of alcohol instead of small servings. They serve you excellent local drafts straight from the tap. They are superbly dainty and are turning into some of my favorite doses of alcohol period. They have an AMAZING outdoor patio... just go all the way to the back whenever you get here and go through the door on the right... and you will see what I mean. They have TV's everywhere... usually playing either the most absolutely bizarre films you could possibly imagine watching, or music videos of the songs they play. The music here is better than most bars on 6th... I mean a lot of the music on 6th sucks... but this one actually plays some good tunes here and there. Even though I'm rating this 5 stars, there is one minor hick-up here. Occasionally the staff here can be rude. I've been given the stink eye more than once at this joint... or an attitude. A lot of the staff here can be very very cool though... and the majority of the staff here are pretty dang hot lol. They almost all have tattoos covering their bodies... and dress as you'd expect people would dress like on 6th... not some professional raiment. Love that! Also adding to the sexiness of the bar is that topless portraits of females seem to be ubiquitous here... though perhaps not so alluring to the female patrons that come here. The food here is good as well... though sometimes a bit too meaty for my tastes on some entrees (I'm more into vegetarian stuff). I would say the food here is a step up from most bar foods.... and the pricing for the food is surprisingly much more affordable than the alcohol here is. Considering this place is better known for its food (and perhaps the HUGE jackalope at the facade of the bar), this is indeed surprising. So in the end I highly recommend coming to Jackalope if you're ever around the dirty part of 6th street... just make sure to have a little extra for the alcohol.. I usually spend around 14 dollars here for just 2 drinks including the tip. However if you come here on a Tuesday the drafts are half off which is quite a treat since they serve up some amazing drafts. They have a good burger for $4 when half off Wednesdays and a $5 draft of local Austin IPA for a meal that's less than 10 bucks and close to the Los Alamos theater nearby, worth a visit for bar hopping or a cheap burger! read more

Beyond the grossness of having the worst female restroom in Austin, I really kind of like Jackalope. I'll illustrate (hold your thanks until later, please). There are some images that one will never fully get out of ones head. Gross things, that leave you frozen in horror with a fully churned stomach. You can imagine, but really, no, no, you just can't. I fear that a few such snapshots will remain etched on my brain for many years to come...lurking. Yes, Jackalope has the worst women's restrooms in Austin since the Ritz closed, and no, Lovejoy's has nothing on the Ritz. My friend had a valid point, "Don't leave it to a punk rocker to clean a bathroom." Indeed. I mention this so you can save yourself from a life of similar images. Perhaps find a outdoor festival Port-a-let at around 7pm in August instead. Before Sunday, it had been a while since I'd been there. Years. Back then, Jackalope was the new kid on the block. There was Lovejoy's, Casino, the Ritz (the area near the bar only), and then this new bar with sleazy pin up lady paintings. I just didn't have a place in my heart for it. That was until I recently met the outdoor patio. We precariously sat on bar stools around a giant Live Oak tree whose shallow root system was creating havoc for the brickwork on the ground. Both I and the table a friend sat next to leaned at bad to be drinking at angles. Regardless, as I spent the evening sipping decent cheap Chardonnay, rocking out to songs such as Rocket Queen (GNR), and chatting with old friends, neither I nor the table fell.
