Definitely a place to check out. We were lured in by the jackalope, which you can sit upon and take a picture, after you've bought a drink. Seating was tough to get, but it was a Saturday night and this place was busy. We eventually got some seats and ordered right away. Took a long time for the food, but again, it was a busy night, so completely understandable, but just be prepared. Our food was delicious, wait staff were friendly, bartender was helpful, and drinks were quenching our thirst. Went here for lunch because I heard the burgers were good. They were pretty solid and reasonably priced. Lots of variety of what you could get on the burger. I got the standard bacon one and the jalapeño one and couldn't decide which I liked better. The waffle fries didn't come with it but they were great. Service was about what you would expect from a bar. And they didn't have tea, which was disappointing, but not the end of the world. I didn't realize how big the place was! This is one of the few bars on Dirty 6th that I actually like. They play great music, serve strong drinks, and everything comes with a side of attitude that makes the place fun and unique. I finally tried their food for lunch the other day. I had their pulled pork sandwich with a side of waffle fries. The side of fries was massive, and they were so delicious. Crispy, and hot, and waffly. The best. The pulled pork sandwich was adequate. The pork had a strange after taste to it... which was hidden by the BBQ sauce well enough, except that the center of the sandwich was a lot drier and devoid of sauce than the edges. So, I ate around the center, and ended up leaving a lot behind. It was huge, and the fries were aplenty, so it was probably a good thing I didn't feel compelled to eat the entire thing. read more

I walked in off the street since they offered "damn good food", for a quick Saturday night dinner. The beer was delicious and the service friendly, but the food was downright horrible. I had my bar set pretty low, terrible (but delicious) bar food was my expectation. I ordered their special, a thanksgiving style burger with stuffing and cranberry sauce. The stuffing was gross. It had none of the savory stuffing taste that I expected (like Stove Top?!) and had nuts and tasted mostly like carrots. The texture sucked. The patty was overcooked and dry. The cranberry was the only sauce on the burger and I was really, really disappointed. I also had the special of smoky pork belly mac and cheese, which was also disappointing. It tasted like a stomachache waiting to happen. Not a ton of smoky flavor. Other than that, atmosphere was lively. I would go here not for dinner but as a bar to hang out. If you just turned 21 do not come here. I was told yesterday to a group on 5 taking a 6th friend who just turned 21 it is "company policy" to not accept BOTH (under 21 I'd) that expired on birthday as well as his new paper one until his new one comes in the mail. I was told it was a "valid legal Texas I'd" but company policy doesn't allow so if you turn 21 do not come here without getting your license situation worked out. Company policy sucks. The bouncers are so rude. It's sad my friend left crying because the bouncer told her to shut up and she talks too much. All because we were trying to ask him a question. When we told him that was rude and we're just trying to figure something out. He told us we can no longer come in after we waited in line for a whole 30-40 minutes. Then the other bouncer told us to split into 2 groups and half go to the other bar and half stay here. To see which line goes faster. As soon at half of us walked to the other line. He told us that they can't come rejoin us they'll have to get at the end of the line. Why tell us to do that and you knew that you weren't going to let us in. read more

Used to roll over to the Jackalope a bunch when we lived closer to downtown. Definitely a good dive bar - especially on "dirty 6th", where it's mainly cheesy college bars with high turnover. Would get a full 5 stars if they were able to maintain that huge back patio with the crazy fire pit. I guess their next door neighbors were some bitches that complained about rowdy Jackalopers coming into their empty bar to use their pissers. Whatever. So they made the landlord build a fence inbetween the bars' patios. It's since been cut out so it's a "low fence" where you can see the entire patio and hang out with people on the "other side". But still. Lame. If you're in the mood for a monstrous gut-bustin' burger, please bypass Camino El Camino (which is decent, don't get me wrong) and hit up Jackalope for a Frito Chili Pie Burger. Dude. Frito Chili Pie ON an already massive burger? Holy crap. Don't eat this if you plan on drinking beers all night, 'cuz you're going to have to hit up the restroom a couple hours after, but it's seriously worth it. Deliciousness. As for the bar itself: solid, tatted-up bartenders without much ego, decent prices, and for those looking for a good SXSW day party, they usually have good bands and cheap, if not free, beer. I love this place and always have. Been a regular staple of mine for over 4 years now. The menu is good and I'm glad they change it up every now and then. Still the best burger in town. The pulled pork quesadilla is good as well. Metal Mondays, 2for1 Burger Night and always with good drink specials. Love some of the staff there as well...TA, Sarah Kay, Kristy, Nick, Joel, Ian. Just for my personal wants, I'd love to see them get some German lagers either on tap or in bottle (Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Pilsner Urquell). It's also not the typical 6th street d-bag bar. Jackalope was one of the first downtown spots I picked to try after moving to Austin. It's within walking distance, but I'm sure I would continue to go back even if I lived further. It's a quirky dive bar on 6th street, with lots of personality, good daily specials and the food is quite good as well. Whether stopping in for a beer, or grabbing dinner and drinks, I recommend. They have excellent burgers, with a range of specialty burgers to choose from. I LOVE THE FRITO-CHILI PIE burger!!! On Wednesday they have 2 for 1 burgers, which is a good special--especially if you want to try some of the more unique burger combos that you wouldn't normally order. [**Caveat: It was the first time this happened, but the last time we went with 3 people (vs. 2 or 4), and the waitress wouldn't let us order 4 burgers at the discounted rate. We wanted to try another random burger, but she said that wasn't allowed since there were only 3 people, which was weird. Because we've ordered 4 burgers before with two people. When I contested it and said that has never been the case, she said it would cut into their profits or something. She was the ONLY person who ever did that. A and I have labeled The Jackalope as our favorite dive bar EVER! We've been visiting the Jackalope since our very first visits to Austin, before living there. The food is amazing! We're never disappointed. We even stopped in at after we were legally married at the capitol before our destination wedding, that's how much we love this spot. It's a great bonus that we were still able to stop in for a bite even after going vegetarian, as they do offer veggie burgers. We've been in for brunch too and it's just as good! We have brought friends to this spot when they visited Austin as well and they've all loved it. Jackalope, the creature of country legend, is nestled in the heart of Austin's legendary 6th Street such a well deserved place for a creature of legend. Now yes this is a dive bar. However, with a jackalope the size of a 3 yr. old quarter horse you are permitted to get drunk and ride and take pictures on (as long as you follow the rules), that is the something to behold. Like most dive bars it has a few ups and downs but over all a great place. The burgers they serve a juicy, large, and in charge; the fries served are waffle cut and in a generous servings. If you make it on a Wednesday there is a great deal, buy one get one with the burger and fries. I have definitely add this place to my normal stops every time I am in Austin. When coming to Austin for a good time you must hit up sixth street! While on 6th st there are many bars to go to but this bar here had good looking food and the DJ was pretty good too! We had a couple margaritas here and had some good laughs seeing the drunk people try to balance themselves. Overall a fun experience. read more

We watched all of Castaway on the tv while sipping on Lone Stars and tequila shots. We (my wife and I) were just taking it easy beating the heat on a hot afternoon (100). We spent 4 hours there. This place is in a great location on 6th and the waitress, Ericka, was nice. Thats about it. The music is blaring loud so dont expect to have a conversation. Its ear bleed loud. The drinks are small and expensive. And the burger that they became famous for - the Chipotle Bacon Cheeseburger - smelled like soured milk and had more grease in it than my hair in the 80s. It was terrible. No flavor no nothing. The waffle fries were good though. Not very impressed at all with this place otherwise. In fact, most people who were coming in were there just to take a picture with the giant jackalope sculpture inside tge restaurant that u can sit on. Then, they would leave. Smart.
