That sinking feeling when you are a snobby foodie in a small Texas town, pull out yelp on your cell phone, search for nearby restaurants, see a few decent options, realize you forgot to filter for Open Now, redo your search, and see only one restaurant open. Yup, that's how we ended up at Jalapeno Tree. Actually, this place in Carthage, TX, ended up being decent. I'm not sure it would survive in Houston, with so many great options for Tex Mex or authentic Mexican cuisine. But the food is not bad and the service was quick and friendly. Starting with the chips and salsa, I liked the thin and crispy chips. The red salsa tasted too tomato-ey and didn't have much spice. The green creamy avocado based sauce was better, but nothing to get too excited about. It was nice that they brought out plenty of salsa, but we did not finish them. I had the Don Pablo - grilled chicken, six shrimps, with Mexican barbecue sauce on a bed of rice. The chicken was good. The shrimp was just ok. The barbecue sauce was interstingly oily and sweet and was finished by my friend after one taste. She ordered a couple of enchiladas, one beef, one chicken. Impressed by the beef enchilada with the chili con carne topping, but not the chicken. The rice and refried beans were edible, but were later helped out by my barbecue sauce. Bonus points for my friend that they had free soft serve on the way out. She told me that instantly required me to give it four stars. But it's my review. I was passing through on a long road trip to Houston and googled Mexican food. Two places came up and I decided on The Jalapeno Tree. One review was talking about having ordered the Carne Quesada and it was served as a taco dish, lol. Well guess what.... I love Carne Quesada and I did order the C.A. tacos. I could not have been more pleased with my entrée! The fresh cut jalapenos along with the salad for the tacos put them over the top. The wait staff was friendly, attentive and on their game. The Jalapeno Tree - Mexican Near Me - Carthage, Texas

I will NEVER make the mistake of going in jalapeno tree in Carthage ever ever ever again! After waiting FOREVER to be waited on and FOREVER for our food to arrive(which BTW was COLD when it finally came) there was no silverware on the table so i asked one of the waitresses for some silverware. she brought a paper napkin with a tiny little fork wrapped up in it. The fork looked like it had been bent all out of shape at some point by an orangutan and partially straightened back out by a baboon so having caught my attention i examined it closer. That's when I noticed that it was encrusted in a layer of (I'm guessing food?) from a previous meal/meals. After asking for another try at getting some actually clean silverware, She brings me another. Just like before ,this one also was DAH. So i asked her to try again as I simply yet firmly placed the fork on the table. Seriously ,I didn't slam it down and most certainly didn't throw it at her, but she in a VERY RUDE tone said "you don't have to throw it at me! That's when I asked for the manager . The chips were fabulous, very light and crispy. It's pretty typical TexMex, I got a taco and enchilada. I wanted to order carne guisada for my husband, but they didn't serve it by the plate or bowl, only in tacos, which I thought was weird. He got a couple of tacos, ate the taco I ordered ('cause I had filled up on chips) and then ordered two more tacos. Our server was okay, not fantastic, but not awful. She did her job. Solid choice for Tex Mex. I had spinach enchiladas. Sour cream sauce was on the bland side but spinach was fresh and portion was generous. Black beans side was flavorful. 22 ounce margarita a good value. Lots of TVs if you want to catch a game while you eat. Interior is clean and festive. read more

We were passing through Carthage and stopped here..It was the best Mexican food ever(And I dont even like Mexican food that much!!).All the reviews do the restaurant justice..good chips and guacamole dip..the salsa could use some more *zing! The food here is consistently pretty good. Today my wife ordered the lunch quesadillas with rice no beans. She said they were good. I ordered the deluxe nachos, they were OK but very greasy! Don't think I will get those again. The service on the other hand, not so good and hasn't been good the last several times we've been there. The prices have also gone up since they put the bar in. I would actually say they get a 3 1/2 stars, but I rounded down for lack of service a greasiness!!!! read more

The service was horrible! The waitress took our order, we got our drinks then the food came. We ordered fajitas, didn't get any plates. She dumped the food off and left. We had to ask another waitress for plates. Then our waitress came before we were even half way done with our meal asked if we wanted dessert we said no and she left the check and left. Stopped here midway through a long drive. Great, friendly service. The place was packed with Sunday after church crowd, but our food came out quickly. Kids had the enchiladas and loved them. Food is great but it takes forever to get out of this place! First is when you wait to be seated, there's plenty of empty tables but you will still wait then the food although it is good, I feel like its not as appreciated because of the wait. It took them 45 mins to get us seated and an hour to get our food. I finished my no refill lemonade by that time and my friends were hammered by the margarita already lol.... after dining our to go order was not ready even though we ordered it same time we just noted it to go, that was another hour I believe. We were just passing through Carthage and saw this little gem right off one of the main roads through town. The parking lot was pretty full so we decided to try it. Stopped by here on a 3 day motorcycle ride. Looking for some place good and this place shows up. I enjoyed the green sauce. The red sauce - basically ketchup with some peppers in it - and not much at that. I had the tamale and my wife had the flauta. The flauta and chalupa were good. So, this is a local favorite. Try the queso flameado or the Ultimate Fajitas! The red sauce and green sauce are both amazing, but the chips are perfect. They are thin and crispy, but don't break when you dip them. Luke is our favorite waiter, no, I don't know him personally. Free ice cream after your meal is always a huge hit with our kids as well! The kids meals here are HUGE. The corn dog is a 12 inch corn dog, the cheeseburger could feed an adult! I usually get a kids meal for my kids (1, 8 & 10) to all split. By the time they eat chips and salsa, split their meal, and get ice cream they are all stuffed! The ultimate fajitas for 1 will also feed our entire family of 5! Ordered take out to treat the family. They took my order, asked for a description of my vehicle and told me to just pull up outside the pick up area and someone would be right out with my order. I did as instructed... and sat there for 10 solid minutes. I got out of the vehicle and walked in through the take out door, and waited by the back register for another 10 minutes while being studiously ignored by no less than 3 servers and a bus boy, (but to be fair, the bus boy may not have spoken much English, he nodded at me, but did not speak) FINALLY, a young lady came back and asked to help me. I told her that I had put an order in, and was here to pick it up, and she went to the kitchen. She returned saying one of the items I had ordered was still not done (we are now nearly an hour after my order was put in) and as soon as it was done, she would bring my food to my car. I paid, and went to my vehicle. Another young lady comes out to my car a few minutes later with my food, stuffs it through the window as I am still rolling it down, mutters "sorry about the wait" as she is spinning around to go back inside, and vanishes. I'm not sure what we were waiting on to be cooked because everything in the bag was stone cold. This really is the best Tex-Mex located in this small town. I've been here quite a few times now and although some of the entrees I've tried were hit or miss, I can confidently say that this place definitely offers the better quality cuisine in town despite that. My last meal here I think I finally found my favorite dish from Jalapeño Tree- the habanero pork tamales and regular pork tamales. I also asked if they would kindly be able to make me a regular Mojito instead of the Skinny Mojito on their menu and they happily accommodated the request- and it was one of the best mojitos I have ever had! Service has always been friendly and very attentive, everyone has always taken great care of us! My only complaint would be that the temperature of the rice and beans could be a little warmer upon arrival- other than that, this is a great place for a meal in Carthage. read more

I will admit, the food was good. However, the mediocre customer service and overcrowding ruined the experience for me.

This place is ok, if you know that you're not really eating Mexican food and just want something tasty. I make more authentic Mexican dishes at home and im not Mexican. The staff was friendly and even though we came in with 30 or more guests, they didn't treat us like an inconvenience and the ONE waitress we had was quick and never seemed overwhelmed. I had the shrimp enchiladas which were actually very tasty! 2 Cheese enchiladas smothered in a tequila sauce and topped with 4 large, nicely flavored shrimp. The tequila sauce was nothing special. It just tasted like a white cream sauce. The shrimp, like I said, were very nicely flavored. Im actually very surprised that Jalapeno Tree has many other locations. Born and raised in Houston, I always thought that authentic Mexican food was the norm and probably a standard all over Texas. The more north you drive, the worse you feel for everyone who doesn't get to experience good Mexican food and thinks this is what it's limited to. read more
