EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED in service and the DISCRIMINATION from Jalapeno Tree gunbarrel, city location, I received today with my special needs Nephew (who is 3). We had planned a birthday lunch & my sister drove over an hour to meet me here for lunch. My nephew is Autistic and has ARFID( severe food avoidance, limited diet) he eats 5 things. His mom always brings his own food. The waitress saw that he was eating something not on the menu and she said she couldn't allow it because it was against policy. My sister explained that he is special needs and had Autism, ARFID, he was in a special needs chair, we had a handicap place card, medical documents and that she always brings his safe foods. The waitress said they had chicken nuggets. It was explained again that he only eats a specific kind. The manager said it was company policy and they refused to let my nephew eat so we packed up our things to go. We were asked to not make a scene. The waitress said she was a "special needs teacher" and the manager said she "has an autistic cousin" and they understood. APPALLING!! When they were brought out they were sizzling but the shrimp had a very strong seafood odor. People at the table thought we ordered fish! They weren't the best tasting and the smell bothered us so we didn't eat more than one each. The beef was the best tasting and the chicken was good too. The rice was a little salty and crunchy. The charro beans were so good! We got both corn and flour tortillas and the flour ones were better! My mango unsweet tea was good but it's a bummer you are charged a refill price for flavored teas. I am so disappointed with this location since they have opened back from their remodeling 2 years ago the food and service just hasn't been the same. The quality of the food is sub par they raised the pricing on all the food I'm guessing to cover the cost of the remodel but the when your raising food prices you should raise the standards of your food quality and it's always disappointing and this used to be my favorite restaurant in town. I have always wanted to try Jalapeño Tree every since I saw the location in Mesquite, TX. Well! While in town this past weekend I made a stop here. It was sooo good! I had the shrimp enchiladas. The shrimp were DELICIOUS! Margaritas were fantastic! Too bad I had to work the next day or I would have had two! Service was wonderful. Our server was super friendly and quite the comedian. Typically not a review person but after my visit today I have no intentions of coming back. Today was my wife and I's anniversary and we heard this would be a great place to celebrate. The fella who greeted/seated us was great and friendly. However the server we got was the complete opposite forgetful, dismissive, no sense of urgency at all, never checked on us for anything just took the order and gave the check. It was completely dead there when we arrived and even by the time we left. If it was busy I'd be more understanding. Took over 15min for the server to come ask us for drinks only for her to come back another 15 minutes later without the drink I ordered... we can see her just sitting there chatting up with the other servers not serving us. shit happens I guess. Pretty sure we were discriminated against. We came in around 8pm on Sunday and were told it would be a 40 minute wait for our party of 8 (most of us Hispanic). We were told in a rather rude manner by the hostess that if we wanted to eat we'd have to go through the drive thru or order from the bar. When we went to the bar the bartender/server seemed confused. However, she kindly took our order. That's when we noticed groups of 7+ and other guest counts being seated almost immediately. I must admit when we first walked in there were a large number of patrons waiting but they started getting seated within moments after we ordered our food. Then every other group as well. Yeah, then a pattern was noticed by our group that everyone else being seated (people with groups as large or larger and arriving AFTER us) were non-Hispanic. It wasn't until we ordered our food that I guess they realized we spoke English that they tried to get us a table. I mean I like the design but I guess you can put a big chain restaurant in a small city but you can't take the big disrespectful attitude out of the small minded folk. I know a few people will ask why a 3? Well, we only interacted with 2 people so it'd be unfair of me to judge a whole group of people based on such a limited interaction. (Bombastic side-eye to JT). To start off, the hostess was very nice, gladly sat us in the bar area where we didn't have to wait for a table, our server Lily was an absolute delight, she was extremely busy, but we are patient people and weren't in a hurry. Started off with chips and two different kinds of salsa, the red that I really liked, and a green that my 6 year old loves. A swirl margarita rimmed with salt instead of sugar ( I requested it that way). Ordered the kids meal first, beef enchilada with queso, french fries and Mac and cheese, the Mac was cold, otherwise everything was good. My husband got lunch beef fajitas ( served all day) and meat came out about med rare without him asking for it that way, with charro beans instead of refried, wasn't impressed with charros, I got the Elvis Presley, again meat came out med rare, I actually swapped out some of my less done meat for my husband's, because the hot skillet helps cook it more, and I like much more around medium. I think it's pretty cool the meat isn't well done like most places, but beware if you like your meat well done. I got double tortilla soup as my sides, and I thought it was delicious. We went to Jalapeno tree on a Sunday at 7pm. The restaurant was sparsely populated with patrons. We asked for a party of 9 to be seated. They apologized, but said it would 1.5 hr wait. We then asked would it help if we had a 5 party and 4 party table split. The host advised that he would not be able to do that as an option. His inability to accommodate seating our party in any form or fashion was not possible. His response was short. Management has failed this restaurant in being able to properly staff it to run an effective business model. I have no clue how the food tastes, nor will I ever.
