Wonderful restaurant for the price. You'll feel like you've traveled back in time, as the atmosphere has a 1970s or 1980s steakhouse/roadhouse vibe to it. Food was very good, and less expensive than most restaurants with similar menu items. Service was great too - waitresses were very attentive and the fact that we had small children wasn't a bother. There were many families with kids in the restaurant as well. 2 adults and 1 kid meal with drinks came out under $50 (before tip), which is pretty unheard of in 2025 with inflation and all! Most importantly, we were stuffed! If we're ever in the area again, this will be our first pick for a meal! read more

First time to eat here. OMG it was amazing!!! So much food! I got the catfish 1/2 portion for $12 it came with: 2 types of beans, which we're amazing, salad bar which had everything under the sun as options, the basics, plus coleslaw, 2 different kinds of potato salads, like 5 different pasta salads, pea salads, etc. 2 sides (loaded baked potato & green beans. This place is something you don't want to miss. A true, home cooked meal made by your grandmother after church on a Sunday. I had the BLT, where the bacon was real bacon and not microwave bacon. Toast was buttery and delicious. I added the sweet potato fries as a side and it was perfection. Husband had the chicken fried steak, baked potato and okra. There wasn't a crumb left on his plate. Real gravy and not package gravy was the cherry on top of this dish. Meals came with some good ole beans and cornbread. We left 10lbs heavier but a heck of a lot happier than when we got there. read more

What a pleasant surprise this place was! We could not believe the amount of food we got for $37 (plus tip). I had the liver and onions lunch special that came with salad bar and choice of potato and choice of vegetables . My choices were mashed potatoes and green beans. I loved the salad bar. Everything was fresh and there were things not found on all salad bars like sliced radishes, pea salad, broccoli salad, corn bread, 2 different kinds of hot beans and beef stew. The liver was tasty - though a little heavy on gravy. My friends had a burger (which was cooked to perfection according to her order - well done), cat fish with cole slaw and both had hand cut fries. They thought it all was delicious. The cat fish and fries were crispy and hot. We were amazed at the great value for the meals, and then found out as we were walking out that hand dipped ice cream was included with our meals. Bonus!! read more

So as we were moving my Mom and Stepdad brought us here for lunch, and I fell in love with this place. I ordered a ribeye med rare with a baked tater and okra yum, my steak was actually cooked to perfection and very juicy loaded with flavor no sauce needed, my wife and kids loved their food as well. Now you get all the salad, soup and corn bread you want, for after lunch, dinner etc, they have an ice cream area, so dang good. The service was very nice and kind and made sure our drinks were full, the decor was nice the place was busy very. If you're ever in Mabank, TX give this place a try you will not be disappointed. Just do it, great country cooking and we loved everything. Service was great and kept our sweet tea filled. Be sure to add the salad bar because you get outstanding stew and beans with it. My wife absolutely loved the catfish and all four of us had a wonderful meal. PS...ice cream scoops are free and was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. read more

We came in today for the 1st time today and was pleasantly surprised ! We have heard it was a great place and it was real busy so we figured we'd give it a try. Kim was our waitress , she was great and took wonderful care of us . I can't believe we didn't take more pics , I guess I was so hungry I forgot . Horrible elite to forget haha. Definitely country food with a country feel. I didn't have the bean bar but I heard it was great . They offer ice cream for free as a desert ! I was really sad about this review it had been 12 years since the last time I visited this restaurant and it use to be AMAZING! I was super excited but ended up disappointed. First I'll start with the salad bar it looked great but everything had no flavor I ate the tuna ,and the pea salad and I had to add salt the regular salad tasted old :( . The cornbread was really good my boys ordered the frog legs and my husband and I ordered the chicken fried steak every single thing looked great but when you ate it it has ZERO seasoning :( .also this place is pretty big and they only have 1 bathroom for females and 1 bathroom for male ,meatless to say it was a very long wait .The only thing that was awesome was the service the waitress was on point with our refills and they had ice cream that was delicious very sweet people but flavorless food that is expensive. read more

We came in and was seated the hostess, took our drink order and gave us menus brought our drinks back. The waitress never came. We got up and made ourselves a salad still no waitress. She came and took orders around us, but never acknowledged us so after 25 minutes, we got up and walked out. read more

My family and I went to eat here on a Sunday. They was very busy we did not mind the wait. We all ordered my husband, daughter and I all ordered meals that included the salad bar and 2 vegetable and toast. They was out of okra so we went with a potato and green beans. Not a big deal. they bring out our food with just meal and potatoes and say they are out of green beans and toast. So I asked if I could be charged for a cheaper meal. I did not receive what I ordered. I had to go to the counter and address it with the staff. They refused to discount it so I asked for a manager. They got the owner. He immediately is rude and says so just because you didn't get green beans and toast you think you should get a discount. I said yes I did not get what I ordered. He was rude and did not even try to hear what I had to say. He said I don't have to do anything for you and handed the ticket back to the staff. So I paid 12.99 for each adult meal and we got a salad and 1 vegetable and our meat but still not what is on the menu. The way the man treated us was awful. He had absolutely no customer service skills and his sassy daughter did not either. I have to say we drive from Kaufman to mabank to eat here but we will not anymore. I assume he likes paying for things he does not receive since he expects his customers to do that. Oh and the staff actually said she is going up there to bitch. Clean and nicely appointed with generous portions of well-prepared food, whether ordering meals or ala carte, and there is a senior menu. In from the Dallas area with another couple. Food was great. Fried pickles were awesome. Chicken fried steak was good. French fries were delicious. Fried okra was what you'd want fried okra to be. Texas toast was soft and floppy. Salad bar looked fine but we couldn't bring ourselves to try it. It was very busy and in this post Covid era was too much for us. We did try the bean bar. I love small towns because they haven't gotten hip and uppity yet. This restaurant is the typical small town cafe. Exactly what you would expect. Started with their great, fresh salad bar. Couldn't ask for more. Then came a New York strip that was a perfect medium rare. Thanks for cooking it right. The loaded baked potato and grilled squash were delicious. Finish this off with free Blue Bell ice cream. All for $14.99. What? Only in a small town! They also have a free bean bar with cornbread and your choice of pinto or ranch beans. Yeah! To hell with this place!!! Came in here at 6:57 PM and the place was packed. The staff was busy no one slacking except maybe one guy standing at the back of place looking at us standing by the hostess stand. Either he was a manager overlooking everything or a customer being goofy and loitering at back of the place for no reason. Anyway FIVE times waitresses walked past us and not one of them greeted us. No one said "welcome to bean and burger" nothing! Absolutely nothing; not even the bus boy said anything and he walked by us twice. As we were going in, a woman passed us through the door so she could smoke a cigarette; we stood at that hostess stand long enough for her to finish her smoke and come back inside to sit at her table. At 7:03 We walked out and still no one said a word to us on our way out. The bean and burger in Athens is so much better at customer service than this place. What a big let down. read more
