The James Room is hidden behind a café that is open during the day and at night you're surprised with a really cool intimate spot that has a DJ spinning r&b at the ideal volume. Their selections change seasonally, and I was excited to try one of their newest cocktails. The menu is categorized by drink type (signature, trademark, etc.) and I excitedly tried a cocktail suggested by the amazing and attentive bartender, Raul. I'm so glad that I heeded his suggestion and tried the Lemon Meringue Pie cocktail because it was balanced and great for a dessert cocktail. The passionfruit meringue on top was sheer perfection. I've been here a few times before and always enjoyed it, but this last visit felt a little off. Stopped by after a concert at the tabernacle on a Friday night. My friend and I were having a girl's night and celebrating her birthday a little early. We sat at the bar with no wait. It's been over a year since I have been to The James Room and they still haven't lost their touch! So much so that I've been here two Saturday's in a row! I came last week Saturday and they literally salvaged the night me and my girlies were having. We stayed until the dj finished his set! I had their espresso martinis (three to be exact) while there. We were welcomed politely by the host who invited us in to the speakeasy but did advise it would likely be close to last call. We understood and let him know we only wanted a quick drink anyway. Unfortunately, we were greeted rudely with a dirty look from the bartender when we entered. He looked us up and down, and feel because we did not fit the clientele, as two Caucasians, he gave a look to the host that we were not welcome. The host apologized, and let us know he would not serve us. The host did not need to give us the apology tour because it was obvious the demographic they wanted and would not have been given the same level of service as the others in the bar. First of all, this place is VIBEYYYYY. Okay? It's giving MOODY, it's giving Sexy, it's giving Swanky. 10/10 ambiance. Service is a bit slow (understandable on a packed night) but the workers are very friendly. (We couldn't figure out how to FIND the restaurant after we parked and when we called, the lady on the phone was so polite and helped direct us to their location!) So why -1 point? A few things, 1. When you're placed at a side table there is literally NO room (sitting or standing) when the other tables are filled too. since it's stool style seating your occasionally going to end up bumping/back to back with the person sitting at the table behind you simply by moving around a bit in your seat. Thankfully no one seems to mind because we're all having a good time. Also the walkways are VERY narrow around the sides (screams fire hazard whew) This was a networking mixer so anyone who walked up to our table to chat had to constantly move side to side/squeeze up against our table because the walkway was just so narrow they nearly blocked the entire path (including servers trying to deliver drinks and other people trying to get by) just by standing near our table. Also..... 2. my friend was having a dry January and ordered the "Designated driver" MOCKtail which is essentially a fancy juice. It was only $3 less than actual Cocktails with like multiple liquors and when they brought it, they only filled her glass HALFWAY and with so much ice (check photo) after about 2-3 sips her drink was gone. Legit seemed like she had less "juice" in her glass, than I had in my alcoholic one. Which seems odd.. like there's no liquor in there, so why skimp on the cup of juice? They were both visually very pretty, but for a mocktail, they sure gave her cocktail portions. Other than that we had a great time! The manager, Johnathan, was quite pushy and unprofessional with his remarks regarding our drink preferences. My husband and I decided to stop by the James Room on a Wednesday night after his birthday dinner, based on a friend's recommendation that it was a great spot for drinks, a chill vibe, and good music. We arrived around 11:45 PM, and as soon as my husband reached for the door, the hostess put up a "section closed" sign and bluntly told us they had already done last call, were full, and were closing soon. To our surprise, a patron inside even mouthed to us, "she's lying, they're not full." I understand that we arrived late and that space may have been limited, but the way this situation was handled was completely unnecessary. A simple, polite heads-up like, "We're about to close, so it may be tight inside," or "Y'all will be the last patrons admitted" would have been fine. Instead, we were met with rudeness and zero courtesy. After that experience, my husband said he wasn't going to beg anyone to take his money, and we left -- and we won't be returning. read more

Fire the hostess Emerald. We had a 7:15 booking (booked days prior) and I received a message at 6:21 and a phone call at 6:19 that they needed to push us back to 9PM because they had a private event and the space was bought out... We were already on the way. Emerald had a horrible attitude with me on the phone when I called back at 6:44. When I asked why I wasn't notified earlier, Emerald insisted she messaged me in advance (20 minutes before.....okay) and said "well do you want me to cancel it or do you want to push it back because those are your options". We have been looking forward to coming here for so long and I am INCREDIBLY disappointed with the experience. Thankfully we got a table at Delbar and the night there was incredible. Hopefully restaurant leadership can guide Emerald on how to handle challenging situations more professionally. read more

If I could give The James Room zero stars, I would. This place is an absolute disaster--poorly managed, and shockingly bad at hospitality for a so-called "cocktail lounge." Let's start with the drinks. They charge premium prices for cocktails that are mediocre at best. Service is equally abysmal. Nothing prepared me for the unprofessional nightmare that is Cortney, the so-called Head of Operations. She was conducting a job interview (yes, at 10 PM in the middle of the loud waiting area), and when I politely tried to make conversation, she was unbelievably rude to me. How was I supposed to know I had walked into her bizarre, makeshift hiring process? If this is how she treats potential hires--and guests--imagine how she runs the rest of the business. I flat-out told the young woman interviewing that I'd never work for someone that nasty, because rudeness like that is a reflection of leadership, not an accident. As if that wasn't enough, the bouncer--who loudly boasts his pro-MAGA views as if anyone asked--decided to get in on the hostility, rudely telling me to leave (which I happily did, because why would I spend another second or dollar there?). But then he had the audacity to tell me I couldn't stand on the public sidewalk about 20 feet away. Newsflash: The James Room and Juxtapose Hospitality do not own the sidewalk--and their tasteless, Trump-loving bouncer in an ill-fitting blazer doesn't have the legal authority to remove people from it. In short: This place is run by horrible people with zero hospitality skills, the service is terrible, and the drinks aren't worth the price. This speakeasy is beyond vibes with live music, food, cocktails, a great Dj, and dancing! Tucked away behind a bakery, we had difficulty locating the belt line, but the hostess was so nice to help talk us to the location! Even before we decided to choose this spot for our nightcap, I called the hostess who explained the live music start time and gave us a run down of the menu! 5 star service before we even got there! Once we located the storefront, the host sat us immediately. Our waitress came over and took our order and even checked on us throughout the night. The chef killed the food. We ordered the lemon pepper wings because why not??? And you don't want to pass these wings up! I promise they are some of the best I've ever had! This is the cutest coffee shop located on the beltline. They have really comfortable outdoor seating, so it's the perfect place to grab a coffee with your pup It's really cute inside too, and they have really delicious looking treats that we didn't try, but I really wanted to. All of our drinks were really good, except I got an iced drink, and the lid didn't really fit so I kept spilling it, which was annoying. My new obession.. a speak easy!! One of the coolest experiences I have had in a while. The James Room is located right on the Beltline and it looks like a little pastry shop. I went at night, and when we peered into the pastry shop there was a line of people... but not for pastries... for a back room! You waited in line and when it was your turn they took you behind a book case, and it was a secret bar! The door man even looked like he was in the Prohibition era with what he was wearing. I was with a group of people so we got a table all together, but I over heard that other people in line where taken to seats that were just open and they could walk around to meet other people they were meeting up with. It was a very romatic/moody/secret like ambiance lol! The lights were dimmed and the music was on the slower side. You had a two hour limit due to the limited seating in the bar. I went in and asked for a table for two. And I was given a table. The server came in. I could barely hear what she had to say so I had to request her to speak up. Then she finally spoke up a little bit and I ordered my drinks. It took her 20 minutes to tell me that there is an issue with the printing ticket and so therefore the drinks that have not been put in yet.
