This is one of the best restaurants in the city of Williamsport. Its more of a fine dining place. Low lights, great service and some of the best food in the area. A great place to take a date for a special occasion. Great steaks and salads. I would recommend eating there for any reason. Its not the cheapest place in town to eat (not the highest either), but one of the best. read more

I have been there on a few occasions. The service is good. Other than the crab dip and crab bisque, I haven't food anything else on the menu that I would recommend. The first time I went was to meet a friend for breakfast. I ordered an omelet. It was dry and tasteless. On one occasion, sushi was ordered. It appeared to be deconstructed. This was not mentioned on the menu. On another occasion, a tenderloin sandwich was order. Instead of melting the cheese over the fried onions and steak, they combine everything forming a rather unappealing dark, brown blob on the roll. Recently, I ordered a French Dip. The au jus was watery and the meat dry. In each case, the presentation was unimaginative. Considering the prices, the food should be much better. Side note...the service is pretty good. read more

This place used to be awesome. What happened? They used to have their own in-house oil for the bread, and the croutons on the salads were all homemade. The calamari was crisp and the sauces were all flavorful and fresh. Now it's just kind of "whatever". It had been about a year since I had stopped by, so we went in a few weeks ago. I hope they get back on track soon. I used to love it in there. Maybe they had an off night? I gave it an extra star because of how things used to be and hope they will be again. I am in Williamsport for work. I have stayed here a few times and had some great meals in the area. I had looked at the reviews for "The James" and it sounded good but the reviews were not very strong. Since I got in so late I decided to order room service. I ordered their bacon cheese burger and added jalapenos. I ordered it medium expecting it to be over cooked. The burger was great and the fries were pretty good. I might have to sit down in the restaurant and get a steak based on how well they cooked the burger. read more

I ate there once with my fiance' & it was ok a little over priced like a lot of establishments in Williamsport are becoming. The downtown is just becoming an aesthetically pleasing store front for a crumbling town. There's enough upscale professionals who can afford to plunk down $6 for a pint of beer an $10+ for a mixed drink & $30+ for a meal but the rest of us work for a living. These people need to be well fed so they can go into the office fully nourished to fire employees who's idea of eating out fancy is going to town with the sides and extras on the touch screen menu at Sheetz. read more

Well, in town for business and staying at the Holiday Inn-Williamsport. First night here, wanted to just stay close and chose The James since it's right in the hotel. Upon entering, greeted by a young hostess who based on her unfriendliness, was clearly annoyed in having to leave her phone text chat with her boyfriend. Quick perusal of menu and noticed the prices were on par with a decent steakhouse in a larger city...but, hey, the company's paying, so who cares? Ordered a beer and the 10-ounce center-cut Sirloin (medium-well) with whipped potatoes and whiskey sauce. Along with the meal, you also get a choice of soup or salad, so I ordered the Crab Bisque. Not overly busy, but got through one and a half beers before food was delivered by a different waitress. It was odd, because it was the steak and the soup, no potatoes. Waitress disappeared before realizing that no spoon was provided. So, started in with the steak. Good thing I was pretty hungry, because it was not medium-well, rather solid medium, closer to medium-rare. Finally got a spoon after sighting a different waitress....almost done with steak at this point. Original waiter shows up later and I ask about the potatoes and he claims that the soup served as the side. Hmm....not exactly what the menu states, both hard-copy and online. So, for $26, you get a starter served with your entree, the entree cooked improperly, and no side. To boot, upon leaving, I notice several other tables had bread, which is interesting, because guess what table never even had bread offered? Pretty sure other dining options will be taken for the remainder of this trip. read more

Loved it!! My wife and I recently had the opportunity to stop at the James on our way through town and were very pleasantly surprised. Despite the fact that it was a busy Friday night we did not have to wait long. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was exceptional. We will absolutely stop in again when back in that area. read more

Horrible!!!!!!!! Atmosphere is a 10. BUT I was recently at the Holiday Inn for a 2-day seminar which offered a lunch menu for the James Restaurant down the hall. The prices were a little high but my colleagues and I ordered anyway since they had Crab Bisque as a soup and the menu was okay. We ordered at 10 am --- lunch time was 12:30 - we were seated ---waited 15 mins for food, wait staff seemed disorganized and clueless. Food: Crab bisque was cold and sooooo salty if was hard to eat it. Sandwich - Tuna salad had little to no mayo or wetness -bread was toasted and hard as a rock - French Fries (fresh cut) came with sandwich were literately raw to half done. The meal was a total disappointment for our staff in attendance. The restaurant was not that busy for three seminars in the building. Day 2 we walked to Perkins for the same price I had a way better meal!!!!!!!! There were only 5 people out of 50 that purchased any lunch there on day 2. You do the math!!!!! You need to hire a Chef not a line cook that is clueless!!!! Penn College has an amazing culinary school and you are serving food like that????? The are alot of other choices within walking distance and they definitely put you to SHAME!!!!!!! Barrel 135, The Brickyard, Julie's Cafe, Imbibe, The Old Corner and many others within walking distance of the Hotel. I will never eat there again!!!!!!! read more
