John Ryan is a uniquely first class brewery experience in Williamsport, PA. The brewery is located in a beautifully renovated townhouse with a bar on the main floor, a basement tavern space, and very nice second floor dining areas. My companion, friends, and I dropped in for drinks on a late December Saturday afternoon. The beer list was tasty but eclectic: if you are less adventurous you may want to call or otherwise check in advance. I had several selections that I enjoyed but at first blush others could be put off by things like Japanese rice lager. Give them a try--you will be pleasantly surprised even if you are a conventional lager or IPA fan. We sat at the bar and service was exceptional and very friendly. read more

Fantastic Valentines dinner! First time eating downstairs where the ambiance is very cozy. We started with the olives which were served warm along with the focaccia and calamari. All were delicious. I got the scallops with polenta cacio e pepe. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the polenta was decadent! My husband got the filet and it truly was 'like butter'. For dessert we shared the cookie plate and stracciatella ice cream with fresh French press coffee. All fun and delicious. Highly recommend! read more

We had a dinner meeting here last week. It was my husband's and my first time here. There were about 14 or 15 meeting attendees. There was one server and I wish I had gotten her name because she was excellent! We aren't drinkers, but everyone else loved the brews. We had ordered the petite fillers with Caesar salad, and I have to say the filler was the best I had ever had. Even the salad was very good. We will definitely go there again on our own. read more

Alyssa, our amazing waitress at John Ryan Brewery, made it happen by seating us in their unique downstairs tavern. We've been here a few times- the drinks are good (beer is brewed in house!), the food is amazing (John is the chef) and the staff are so wonderful. Last time Andrew was our server and every drink and dish was perfectly timed so we didn't feel rushed. The Parisian gnocchi was amazing- I could have eaten multiple dishes of it. Food was okay. The service was terrible. Waited for a ridiculous long time to get anything. We had a table for 8 and one of our guess got held up at work for 15mins. So we ordered apps and drinks but apparently that was unacceptable by them. As a fella industry worker we were later told that we were purposely punished by the staff because of it. This was our first time here after hearing nothing but rave reviews. It definitely lived up to our expectations! The space: a beautifully restored historic building with unique dining areas to choose from. We ate in the dining room on the main floor. We also explored upstairs and the tavern. We can't wait to go back and eat in the different rooms. The food: so incredibly tasty and different from everything else in the area. My bibimbap was delicious and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his pork. The fries and dessert were amazing as well. The beer: we both got flights and between the two of us tried everything they had on tap. There wasn't a single disappointment in the bunch. We particularly enjoyed the rye, märzen, and pear ale. The staff was all super friendly and made sure things were moving smoothly. It was my husband's birthday and they put a candle in his dessert and they all made sure to wish him a happy birthday. I had the opportunity to stop over in Williamsport for a night. The first thing I did after hitting the hotel was to wander over to John Ryan hoping for a great meal. The food did not disappoint. The collard greens were delightfully seasoned. The cornbread was unlike any I've had before with a soufflé like texture. Delicious! The fried quail, while hard to eat, had a lovely crispy batter that broke into crunchy, savory pieces I could enjoy with each bite. The service was another matter. My server seemed distracted and uninterested compared to the server of the table next to me. I also don't need to be asked three times if it is just me dining. Yes, party of 1. After reading all the stellar reviews, we were excited to try this restaurant tonight - New Year's Eve. The restaurant is a classic Victorian Era mansion, and it's very well done. We were very much looking forward to a romantic, delicious dining experience. But, sadly, our experience was less than stellar. My husband and I both ordered the Denver Steak entree - medium rare for him and medium for me. I had to send back my red wine because it had disappointingly gone to vinegar. For starters he had the Lobster Bisque and I had roasted carrots. The bisque was good, not great; I really enjoyed the carrots. We were both very disappointed in the entrees. His steak was rare and cold, and mine was medium rare and just warm. He quietly ate some of his while I sent mine back to the kitchen. A note to chefs: cook your customers' steaks the way THEY prefer them - not how you prefer they eat them. My cooked steak was delivered by the manager (?) who asked my husband if he'd like his remaining meal boxed up; he said "no". She asked if there was something wrong with it, and he replied, honestly, that it was served cold and undercooked. She was not happy with that reply and said it would be taken off the check. My properly cooked steak was delicious but as my husband was done, I felt compelled to eat it quickly. So awkward and uncomfortable. Our waitress, Alyssa, was friendly, competent and very apologetic, though none of this was her fault. We will likely not return. read more

Main room looks cold and un inviting because of the lights! Am I at a high end restaurant or hospital? Fix the lighting to warmer color and dimmer. This place is amazing. When we were seated the hostess took us on a journey to the basement. I was a little concerned at the moment, but we were seated in this little nook in the basement. The beer was excellent. The food was barely average. The Bolognese tasted as though it was Manwich out of a can on under (or possibly) over-cooked noodles! The waiter forgot to put in 1 of 3 appetizers though perhaps he was having a bad day. He was very pleasant. All the staff was personable. If the food can be improved to match the beers this would be my go To place in Williamsport. The ambience is spectacular. A late 1800's former home of a lumber baron. I've recently moved to Williamsport from Philadelphia and this restaurant is by far my favorite in the area! The menu is unique for the area with seasonal dishes sourced from local farmers. My favorite thing to order are the collards and shrimp and grits. Additionally, their cocktails are phenomenal! I've never tried the beer but I know they brew in house. It can be on the pricier side however, it's worth it. Stacy is my favorite server who is just perfect at recommending dishes and will chat with the table the perfect amount. The owner, John also makes frequent appearances and is happy to talk about his impressive and extensive culinary knowledge. I always feel well attended to. The mood can range from the bar, to outdoor seating, to basement brunch sports watching, to a lovely evening for two in the dining room. Overall, I love it here and I hope you do too! read more

The first time we ate at John Ryan it was excellent from the offerings, preparation, presentation, and wait staff. Unfortunately, the next two times we ate there, the food was mediocre and overpriced. I had the shrimp and grits special which the wait staff raved about and said the chef had lived in the south and brought the recipe back. I was expecting something incredible. it totally missed the mark. The other food was just ok. We will try it again, and hope to have an experience like our first. read more

Wow! Went there for the first time yesterday for the World Cup final. What a great time! We were made welcome immediately by John. He came out and treated us like old friends. Special food/beer menu for the day was spot on. We particularly liked the Japanese ingredients infused in his menu items. Other family and local friends joined us and we enjoyed the entire ambiance and wonderful service. Ryans' a great addition to the many unique food places in Williamsport. We'll definitely be back.
