Jay's is a great place to meet for lunch. I'd avoid adding bacon to your burger. And always save room for the pie.

We so enjoyed our dinner here last night! Even though it was a very busy night, the waiters weren't rushing you, food arrived in a timely manner and was so delicious! The kitchen staff deserves a High Five for keeping the quality top notch while so busy! The owner stopped by our table a few times and checked on each table with a friendly greeting. Great.chicken fried steak. The people working there are really nice. The restaurant is very clean. They make their own dressing and the ranch was excellent. We got the shoestring onions for app and they were awesome. Reasonably priced and I love to support local business. Maybe next time we will try the homemade pies! read more

We had heard how good The Jay Cafe was from several people so we decided to try it. We ordered the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and fried okra. All of it was very good. We asked for lemons for our tea a couple of times before we finally got them and we asked for our gravy on the side and it still came on top of the chicken fried steak and potatoes. But it was hot and fresh and tasted great. You definitely get a lot of food for your money. The rolls were hot and good. We ordered strawberry shortcake to go and they boxed up each component separately which was nice. The flavor was ok. Not great but not bad either. The cake was a bit dense and heavy. The little gift shop had so many things I wanted and the ladies working in there were super friendly. We will definitely return to try more of their food. read more

They have impressed me over the past two years. Their desserts are phenomenal and delicious. The dishes are great. My favorite thing to eat are the salads. They are huge and the ranch dressing is quite creamy. The only thing I wish they would make are breakfast tacos for breakfast. Never have seen those on the menu. read more

Absolutely delicious - can't emphasize enough how much we enjoyed the meal we had this evening. Chicken fried steak with green beans and mashed potatoes, sweet iced tea that was not too sweet and a delicious slice of coconut cream pie to take home for later. A very fine Texas country cafe. Oil cloth table cloths, homemade dressings, soups and pies. Clean. Courteous. And they are anxious to please. Chicken fried steak was outstanding. Servings are large, so consider something like the Little Tex unless you have a cavernous hunger. I had the Little Tex (half the normal CFS) and was too full to try the desserts. Next time I pass, I may just stop for pie and coffee. You get the feeling the place is run by people who love their work. Highly recommend if you are passing by on Hwy 36 to or from Austin or San Antonio. read more

First off, hands down best country fried steak ever. The manager Aaron was very accomodating to let me come in so close to closing. Service was exceptionally fast and the food was top notch. Everything was obviously made from scratch. Nicely seasoned corn and rolls with homemade honey butter was so good. Chocolate cream pie to top it off was rich and dense. Well-worth the short drive, this restaurant is amazing! Everything I've had here is perfectly cooked... the catfish has the best batter I've ever tasted, and not a drop of grease. And the onion strings, I can't even describe, other than yummy deliciousness. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I've been to this place several times, after the very first time I wanted more! Everything I've had has been exceptional. My favorites are the juicy jay (hamburger with cheese inside the meat patty), the chickenfried steak, and the turkey and dressing. I often stop to eat here on my way to Houston (there is no place I'd rather eat at in the entire area). The food is excellent, the service is even better. I'd recommend this place to anyone who enjoys country cooking, and pie. Oh, the pie.... its absolutely amazing! I don't know who wrote that the pie was "out of a can tasteless" in their review, but they must have been coming from a dentist appointment, because anyone with taste buds could have tasted the awesome flavors of pies! My favorite is the peanut butter. YUM!! I always take my friends and family when they come to visit. I don't mind driving the 20+ miles to go either, its worth it! read more

I went in and thought "this isn't going to be any good but then I got my burger I took one bite and went wow I fell in love with it the patty wasn't too soft or too hard the bun was tossed just right and it was the best burger of my life. Plus it comes with onions, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mustard, Mayonnaise and more plus it comes on the side so if you don't want one thing you don't have to dig into your burger to get it out you just don't put it on. read more

We hired the Jay cafe to cater for our class reunion and they were amazing! From the moment I reached out to Tim he was professional and had great communication. We had chicken fried chicken/steak. It was hot, fresh and delicious. His wife's pies are the best I have ever had. My husband (a foody) said the peanut butter was the best dessert he had ever had. Excellent fresh food on every visit. Nice variety of entrees and desserts. Friendly service. Reasonable pricing. My only pet peeve is that the waiters are extremely pushy about offering dessert. It's so annoying that I'm pretty convinced they make a commission off of selling pie or have some sort of insider contest happening. Our waitress brought up dessert right when we had barely seated and got settled, also mentioned we needed to take some home if we were too full. Pie was brought up at least 5 times, nice at first, but got annoying. If you want good country cooking THIS is the place! My husband and I come here for true comfort food. They have the best fried pickles with ranch sauce! My husband loves his bacon cheese burger. He marvels every time we go there at how wonderful it is. The small chicken fried steak is more than enough, I end up taking a portion of it home. If you don't have room for dessert, trust me, get it to go. We have had pie, apple turnovers and cake...... Never a disappointment!! read more

I had high hopes for this place based on the mainly positive reviews. I ordered the shrimp "extravaganza" with a side of green beans and a loaded baked potato. The fried shrimp was slightly undercooked, leaving a layer of gummy breading under the barely golden exterior crust. The green beans appeared to be canned and limp, although they were dressed up with onion and bacon. The "loaded" baked potato only had scant amounts of butter, sour cream, and cheese, leaving it drier than I'd hoped. The only real saving grace was the peanut butter pie, which was rich enough without being too sweet. read more

Enjoying a mid-week ride through the Texas countryside, the colorful roadside sign for The Jay Cafe certainly caught my attention. What else caught my attention? The dozens of work trucks filling the gravel parking lot, a sure sign of good country cookin'. I enjoyed the Little Tex chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans. This didn't leave me any room to eat pie right after lunch, but you can bet I bought a slice of triple chocolate pie to take home. It was delicious! We've been to the jay cafe previously and the food has always been excellent, with decent service. But today when we went we couldn't even get a server. We were seated, then three other tables were seated after us and all got drinks and their orders placed while we sat there waiting for a server. read more

A MUST!!!! We live in Needville and eat at The Jays Cafe weekly, sometimes twice a week! Wonderful home cooking and Tim and his family as well as his wonderful staff alway take great care of us! Try the Pork Chops on Tues or Catfish and OMG!! 4 cheese Mac and cheese on Saturday! Weekend breakfast buffet is the best! Finally, don't forget the pie! Great mom and pop style cafe. Had their delicious Salisbury steak special. Didn't try their pies but they looked amazing! Farmers from around the area love this place. *Use their butter on their bread. The butter makes the bread taste like a cinnamon roll it's soooooo good. The owner is very friendly!
