I have seen this place a few times on my way to work but I've never stopped until now and now I'm sad I didn't find it sooner. Longmont isn't known for its Asian food and it's hard to find a good Ramen in northern colorado but this place was absolutely delicious. It's tiny and not on a main road so you may not know it's there. I ended up ordering the black garlic tonkatsu at the chefs recommendation and boy I'm glad I did. The broth is light and flavourful. It's not overly greasy. The noodles are the perfect bouncy texture and the chatsu was fantastic. I'm not a fan of fatty meats but the fatty parts of the chatsu literally melted in your mouth. I ordered it with the Thai tea because I wanted a sweet drink and the sweetness from the tea paired so well with the saltiness of the soup. You could tell it was fresh. Fresh bamboo shoot, fresh meat, fresh seaweed, everything was so delicious I literally cleaned the bowl. As for price, my tea and ramen came to just over 20$ with tip which I will gladly pay for the quality I received. The service was great, the food was great. I'm so picky with ramen because I've had the real deal in Japan but this was one of the best I've had in Colorado. I will be back. I will bring friends and I will eat more. read more

The Kazoku is a small and unassuming casual restaurant that is big on customer service and great flavors in food. The Katsudon (pork) Donburi and Gyudon (beef brisket) Donburi were excellent. There is so much good to say about this place! A small cute family owned restaurant, what is better than that? Inside there are a few tables but the outside patio is perfect for warmer days. The waitress was so nice and helpful. We talked for a while! If you aren't too familiar with the menu, just ask because the staff is very knowledgeable. They even have little chopstick helpers if you aren't the best with chopsticks. The food was authentic and all delicious. I tried takoyaki for the first time and I am HOOKED. The spring rolls were delicious. I got tonkatsu ramen where everyone else got spicy miso. There is chili oil on the table if you wanna spice anything up! We ended with Japanese cheesecake which is like a lighter less sweet version of American cheesecake! I am only giving 4 stars because I wish the egg was more jammy (I think that makes such a difference with ramen) and I thought the portions were a little small for the price point. Sad. That is the one word that sums up our experience at the Kazoku. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon after the lunch rush, thinking we'd disturb fewer people with our little one. There was one person leaving when we arrived, and shortly after we sat down, a few more patrons arrived. We ordered, and then we waited... and waited... and waited. It turns out they had one young woman doing literally everything -- hostessing, waiting tables, busing tables, AND COOKING! No wonder everything took forever. Also, the seating area kept getting a bit hazy with smoke from the kitchen, so that didn't help. To top that off, the food wasn't very good. The broths for our ramen were bland. The best thing we had was the side of white rice I ordered just because I was craving some. Additionally, I do not eat pork, and there were very few non-pork options for ramen. I am used to there being a few chicken options, but that wasn't the case here. It would take a lot -- and I mean a lot -- for us to consider going back. I'd rather just go to a ramen chain than experience the Kazoku again. read more

I was really excited to try this place because it's nearby and the reviews are excellent! Unfortunately I probably won't come back--it wasn't for me. I tried the Tonkotsu Ramen and the Donburi (Gyudon). I had the Ramen with vegetables and tofu. I asked for the tofu to not to be fried, so they gave me uncooked tofu. The dish was just okay--it was missing some umami, but hopefully getting the pork or katsu would bring this. The Gyudon was pretty sweet. I was expecting the rice to be fluffy and fresh, but it wasn't either. I wouldn't order that dish again. We are very discerning when it comes to ramen. Since moving from SoCal where there's an abundance of ramen spots, we've struggled to find a place we really enjoy. Until we found The Kazoku. Every other place we've tried has let us down in one way or another whether it be the broth, noodles, marinated egg, chashu pork, or a combination of the above. It's hard to find a coherent bowl of ramen and this is. This spot has everything just about perfect in our opinion. We order the tonkotsu black and the broth has excellent flavor, the chashu pork is cooked excellently and has a good ratio of lean/fattiness, and the egg is marinated to perfection and cooked just the right amount. The only thing we aren't crazy about are the noodles (we are used to house made but this is a big ask) - this is easy to overlook when every other aspect is so well done. My only other wish would be for the egg to be on top of all the other toppings but this may only be an issue for takeout. Super friendly service and a very cozy indoor/outdoor seating area. Looking forward to more visits, it's hard to keep ourselves away! P.s. I recommend adding extra chashu if you get the tonkotsu read more

My understanding is that the owner of the former Malee Thai opened up this shop, and I couldn't be happier with the change. This isn't a sushi/ramen duo, and I'm thankful for that, as it gives them room to really specialize in what they do best. I have yet to try all of their ramen recipes, but the tonkotsu and tonkotsu black are two incredible starts to my ramen journey here at Kazoku. Please give them your business. Kazoku is a ramen restaurant, it does not serve sushi. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the ramen and it was very authentic. The two key ingredients in a bowl of ramen are the noodles and the broth, both were done right. I had the Tonkotsu Black Ramen, the chashu pork was tender with the right amount of fat and the broth had the tasty black garlic oil. The ramen noodles were slightly on the soft side which I like, some people might prefer their noodles a bit more al dente. This is a two person show, one waitress and the chef. The waitress was extremely friendly and courteous. This is definitely the best place to have ramen in Longmont. read more

I wish I could give this restaurant 5 stars, and if I were reviewing this when they first opened, I probably would have. I will start by saying this is hands down the best ramen in Longmont, possibly best in BoCo. It is flavorful and authentic, and on a cold night it definitely hits the spot. If I'm ever craving ramen and don't want to drive far or make my own from scratch, I will definitely order from The Kazoku. My issues have to do with the price and quantity. I am very happy to pay for a high-quality product, but this restaurant provides very little broth, so the ratio of the ramen & other ingredients to broth is completely off. For to-go orders, they only fill a pint container halfway, sometimes less! The broth should be the easiest part to make in bulk, so why they are skimping on this crucial component is beyond me. The result is less a soup and more a bowl of wet noodles and toppings (albeit very flavorful wet noodles!) I have noticed this becoming worse over the past year. When they opened, they would serve closer to a full pint of broth, which in my opinion is the bare minimum; most ramen restaurants provide quarts of broth (the tall 32 oz containers) so I was initially surprised to receive the small 16 oz pint servings the first time I ordered. Now that's been cut back to 8 oz or less; the last time I ordered I couldn't even see the broth when I added it to my bowl of noodles. Another point of decline I have noticed is their eggs. Ramen eggs are not just hardboiled eggs; they are marinated eggs, at least 8 hours and often overnight, and will have the telltale ring of brown around the perimeter with a delicious rich umami flavor, and soft jammy yolk from a softer boil and the marination process. When I first ordered from The Kazoku, they had traditional marinated ramen eggs, although they only serve 1/2 an egg per bowl rather than the usual 1 full egg cut in half. Since at least March, every time I've ordered ramen, I've received half a plain hardboiled egg, no marinade, no jammy center. I love ramen eggs so much, I usually pay extra at The Kazoku to add on an "extra" egg (half an egg) so I can get a whole serving. This costs $3 to add on, and what I've received for the past 6+ months is just a basic hardboiled egg, often with a dry flaky yolk. If they are marinating them at all, they're probably just dunking them in soy sauce at the beginning of dinner service; there's no flavor permeation that develops over hours of marinade. TL;DR the value has declined since opening, and it feels like they're skimping on what should be ramen staples. Will I still dine here? Absolutely; it is the best we have in the area. But I find myself making my own ramen and marinated eggs at home when I can to avoid feeling ripped off every time I order, and I've stopped ordering extra eggs. I'm writing this because I love this restaurant and what it was when it opened, and I hope management sees this and considers some small changes that would make a big difference for their customers. I would love to return with an updated 5 star review in the future. read more

I ordered a house side salad and the black ramen. The dressing on the salad was absolutely fantastic. It was one of the best dressings I have had in a long time. I normally do not order pork, but the black ramen had such good reviews that I had to try it. So glad I did!
