Chicken was quite dry, that's unfortunately what I remember. I don't eat sauces so I hope my meat is juicy and/or tender, just not dry. Shop was good size, plenty of seating, large parking lot, in between Descanso and Shabu restaurants. Rewards program is good but ordering at the kiosk was ok. I think when it's not busy, maybe not offer it, just an idea. People dine in so they can talk to other people, not press buttons on a screen. Only a couple of customers came in to order the half hour I was there so not much of a crowd during dinner on a Sunday. Average noise.

I went to go catch a movie nearby, but I needed to eat lunch first. I don't go to Orange County a whole lot, but I know The Kebab Shop has several locations in Orange County. I had been to 5 other Kebab Shop locations and wanted to see how this one compared to the others. So far, this is looking like one of the better locations, although I'm sure the free premium toppings on wraps and bowls is a pretty big factor here in the compare and contrast. If you're not sure what the last sentence means, the backstory is that The Kebab Shop recently celebrated opening their 50th location around April 2025, and they have since celebrated by offering free premium toppings on bowls and wraps. I thought the offer would only last for a month, but they've since extended it such that it was still valid even on my visit to this Costa Mesa location! This Kebab Shop is located in the Shops at Mesa Verde on the southwest corner of Adams and Harbor. It's about 2 blocks south of the 405 freeway. CVS and Vons are the anchor stores here, but The Kebab Shop is on the opposite end of the parking lot, closer to Adams. Look for a fountain with some umbrellas covering tables and chairs. That's where The Kebab Shop is. They have two sets of front doors, indicative of the ample indoor dining area, which consists of three long community tables and a handful of other tables by the walls. And if you prefer outdoor dining, there are also some tables with umbrellas around a fountain just outside the front door. The front counter is to the left as you enter the shop. Even though there were no other customers in line, an employee (Velinda?) told me she'd be with me in a minute. It was probably closer to two before she was able to take my order. They do have an order tablet on the right side of the counter, but I chose to wait since the tablets can be a little cumbersome to use, especially if you're fickle with your order. After studying the menu for a bit, I decided on a Grains Bowl with Grilled Chicken Shawarma, a new protein offered at The Kebab Shop that doesn't incur an upcharge, which I very much appreciate. Now gone are the days when I will have to pay an additional ~$2 just for a chicken not named carved chicken, and the grilled chicken upgrade isn't even that much of an upgrade in my opinion. For my bowl, I went half and half on the base: truffle brown rice and fries. *Hot tip alert* the fries are normally a $1 upcharge if selected as a topping, but you don't get charged when you choose fries as a base! However, Velinda mentioned that I can't get saffron rice as a topping if I chose truffle brown rice as a base. Not totally sure I understand the logic, but oh well, I'd prefer truffle brown rice over the saffron anyhow. After placing my order, I went over to the sauce station to get one of each of their sauces so I could do my usual thing and take a photo of the sauces arranged like a traffic light. Unfortunately, there couldn't be a red light in this situation because it would have looked nasty! Like bloody nasty! That's because when I depressed the pump of the Fire Chili sauce, it came out all liquid-y, unlike the OG Yogurt and Cilantro Jalapeno sauces. The red sauce also came out with so much force that some ended up on my hand as if I got into a knife fight with someone. I needed a handful of napkins to clean up the mess, both on the sauce counter and my hand. It took about 5-6 minutes before my name was called, and I appreciate how the male employee who handed me my bowl gave me a smile, which should be a standard, though they do forget from time to time, understandably. I've ordered this bowl, or at least a similar one, several times, and this one was almost up to par with what I've had before. I say almost because I didn't feel like the flavor came out as strong in this bowl. In fact, there was more flavor in the olives than there were in everything else combined! That includes the OG and Cilantro Jalapeno sauces as well! Perhaps that bloody Chili sauce was indicative of how muted the other sauces were; I probably could have used double the amount of sauces I got, but I can't fathom how much fuller I would have been just to get the desired amount of flavor for my taste buds! I also thought some pieces of the grilled chicken shawarma were a little burnt, but not terribly bad. I do appreciate how they gave an abundance of fries as part of my base! They always go well with the rest of my bowl. I haven't been the biggest fan of The Kebab Shop, especially given that I've never given 5 stars to any of their locations before, but they've gotten close as of late, though maybe not *that* close at this location with all the shortcomings I've mentioned in this review. Nevertheless, it's a good solid spot for Mediterranean eats, and I do recommend trying their wraps/bowls, especially while the premium toppings are still complimentary! I don't recommend, however, snoozing on their sauces because if you do, you'll definitely lose!

I've been to multiple TKS throughout soCal and from my experience all the food is consistently good. This location stands out due to it being low key not too busy plus I got great service. If you're lucky enough to have your order taken by Ricky who provided great customer service from the get go you just might score some food on the house if you dine in and be respectful... after all they are handling food.

My go-to order is the chicken Cornish, and I always substitute the rice for zereshk polo. The rice is perfectly fluffy every time, and the barberries add the most delicious tang that just brings the whole dish together. It's seriously so good. They're also incredibly generous with their lavash bread, which I love because it pairs perfectly with everything. But what really makes this place special is the service. Having…read moreeaten at hundreds of Lebanese restaurants across multiple states--and traveling back to Beirut once a year--I have a very high bar for authenticity. My wife is also very familiar with the cuisine and cooks many of these traditional dishes herself. Last night, we tried BEI in Costa Mesa, and we are both absolutely thrilled to have found it. The hospitality here is amazing. Tommy gave us a warm greeting right as we walked in, and it was a pleasure chatting with him all evening. Our waiter, George, was equally amazing. He isn't Lebanese himself, but he jokingly told us that he is becoming Lebanese more and more every day just from eating the food here! He knew the menu inside and out, guiding us through the options and sharing his personal favorite plates with real passion. As for the food, my wife and I completely agreed that the chicken shawarma was easily the best I have ever had anywhere in the United States. It fully equals what you would eat at a high-quality restaurant in Lebanon. The toum (garlic spread), which is an absolute must for the chicken, was unbelievable. The hummus, baba ganoush, batata harra (spicy potatoes), and the fattoush salad were all absolutely amazing and perfectly seasoned. We finished the evening with an incredible knefeh for dessert. Even the hookah was great--smooth, well-prepared, and the perfect addition to the evening. They have a DJ on Fridays and a belly dancer on Saturdays, giving the space an awesome weekend energy. If you want genuine Lebanese cuisine paired with true Middle Eastern hospitality, BEI is a must-visit. We will certainly be back every time I am in town!

Now listen. The food? Solid. Reliable. The kind of food that understands you are not here for nuance. You are here because life has punched you in the throat and you require a plate of rice, chicken, gyro meat, and mysterious white sauce to spiritually stabilize. I used to go to the OG one in NYC when i was getting punched in the throat there too. (PUNCHED IN THE THROAT BY ACADEMIA, FIGURATIVELY, y'all haver crazy imaginations outthere). I came craving something familiar and left feeling like I wasted both time and money. First Impressions (1/5) When I walked in, there was only one person working, handling the fryer, the register, and assembling plates. I genuinely felt bad for her, especially considering the steady line forming. What We Got (2/5) I ordered a regular plate, which is what I usually get at Halal Guys. Nothing customized or complicated, just the standard order I have had many times before at other locations. Taste and Quality (0/5) The food was shockingly bad. The rice was raw and crunchy, which was hard to believe at first. The meat pieces were tiny and very chewy, and the pita bread was extremely soggy. On top of that, it was only around 4 pm and the usual spinning meat and grill were not even on, despite the line picking up. Service (2/5) The worker was clearly trying her best, but one person running everything in a busy location is not realistic. She was constantly running back and forth between the fryer and the line, which made the whole operation feel chaotic and slow. Space and Atmosphere (3/5) The space itself was fine and what you would expect from Halal Guys. Clean enough, but nothing stood out positively enough to offset the food experience. Was It Worth It (0/5) Not at all. As someone who is pretty frugal and almost always finishes their meals, I could not finish this plate. It genuinely felt like a waste of $18. Final Thoughts This location does not seem to be held to the same standards as other Halal Guys in the area. This experience was disappointing from start to finish.
