The last time I adopted from there was years back, a cat, no offense to the previous administration but the improvements are amazing. They respond very quickly to any questions or request to see a pet after application is done. The kennels are all clean, animals well cared for. The don't leave you hanging for days when you call, ask questions or do application. The front desk ladies are extremely professional and well organized, as good, much better actually than other rescues I have seen. They have you bring in current dog to meet potential adoptee which to me is a GREAT idea, the young man that handled that was extremely knowledgeable and kind. In todays world of so many needy pets, they are the light at the end of the tunnel, wonderful people and amazingly professionally run. The adoption fee is also very fair considering how much it includes, getting a pet already spayed or neutered is a huge plus. I contacted Helping hounds dog rescue and filled out an application. Their process is rather simple- fill out the application, provide your veterinarian contact number, and have one reference who knows you call them. Once they approve you, you are free to go and visit all the dogs (protection of the animals i'm assuming and it's a great thing!). The whole process literally took a week. I was able to go to the rescue, tell them which dog(s) i was interested in and they let you walk them and hang out with them before you decide. They even let me "trial" a dog home because I have cats. I feel right in love with my dog who was "Cheers" at the shelter but we renamed her "Ginger". The fee paid (i believe i paid $600) covered all of her vaccinations, neuter, vet visits etc. All of these fees go back into the shelter. I had a phenomenal experience and was matched up perfectly with my dog. I love, love love her and i would highly recommend this rescue if you're looking to give a dog their forever home. The staff were incredibly friendly, kind , and reassuring. They take excellent care of both the dogs and the adopters wanting information. I would highly recommend Helping Hounds Dog rescue!!

A feral cat that comes to me for food was again at my door, too afraid to come in. I called two hours before appointment to let them know what I was doing and they were very understanding. Another bad weather day I was to meet them at petsmart. I live in camillus and went to that one since they know I live there and the volunteer never once said which one, she was in clay when I called from camillus location. She then wanted me to drive to her house which I said I couldn't get there since I had a ride. I got a text that she was done with me and would give the cat to someone else. I wasn't going to say anything, but a month later the cat is still available.

I appreciated it because I was so looking forward to having her join me and my family quickly. As a family member now, she is wonderful, a doll. Snowy is adapting quickly. Within a couple of hours she was walking around, eating and doing her necessities in her litter box. She follows me around like a puppy. She is still getting use to Bentley (dog) but has no issues with him. And he, none at all with her. We have set Snowy up for a general vet appointment for Tuesday, April 22nd. Basically, to establish a relationship with her and the Rockaway Veterinary Service Vets. Thank you once again for putting your trust in me and my family. Our adoption of Snowy is a serious and lifetime commitment regardless of anything to us. I took my babygirl on November 6 to get spayed...I pick her up around noon..they called me to say…read moreshe is ready to go home...I bought the collar $11.00..so she will not lick the area where surgery was performed....I called them on November 12th..told them something is wrong she has a very crusty white hard substance on the surgery area.U left a message and someone called me the next day..some woman told me it is nothing to worry about sometimes it takes longer to heal... not to worry (NOT TO WORRY) the area is not looking like it healing ..I said she sleeps all the time..the woman said well she is getting older..this lady was rude and short with me..she was not the vet.....then she said take her to your VET !!.that will cost me alot of money..they didn't refer me to any of their vets..BTW she still has thst stupid collar on 10 days !!!!!it hurts me that she has had that collar on her... and she is 4 months old...she was very active playing with her toys all day and playing with her brother...now all she does is sleep...all day and night..she is a kitten!! she didn't sleep all day....she walks right by her brother not wanting to play with him...she was a healthy kitten before I took her to that horrific SANS......I am calling my vet tomorrow she needs to be seen....SANS DOESN'T WANT TO TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY ...THAT LADY BLEW ME OFF.....this is a very sad situation...go to get this done with your vet NOT SANS.....they do surgeries like cats on a converter belt..they do not care about your baby..it s just another animal to practice spaying..who knows if they are even licensed to PERFORM surgeries!!!! there needs to be a investigation to what is going on there.....I am going after them...this is my babygirl and she is family...cheap price and half fast job...is what you get here......

Financially we were able to give a donation during the holiday season in addition to buying all the essentials to bring our girl home. But it is nice that they have events such as this where families who might not be able to part with all that money up front can take home a new family member, spoil them a little, and hopefully give back throughout the year rather than just paying the adoption fee. I was impressed by how clean the cat room was and how happy the cats seemed. The volunteers didn't seem to know much about the individuals and the lady working at the front desk was a bit brash. I also do love that it is a non kill shelter. The only thing that brought it down to a 4 was just the harsh attitude behind the desk.
