Fried brussel sprouts - 4.5 - wonderfully fried and tasty Tagliatelle with scallop - 3.5 - good scallops but small - tagliatelle cooked a little too long Spaghetti and clams - good clams, a little chewy but more in a satisfaction sense Grilled catch of the day (halibut) - 5 - excellent fish, cooked well, tender, juicy Braised short rib - 4.5 - very tasty and tender meat - a bit too much sauce Kitchen s'more - 3 - good taste, not overly sweet - tiny!!!!!!! Great date night spot - service in point, all dishes cooked well, reasonably priced for what they provide (and in Marin). Had shishito peppers with amazing aioli sauce, blue cheese and persimmon salad, gnocchi and halibut special. Everything was top quality and delicious. Oh, and wine list as large as the menu and had two phenomenal glasses; old and new world varietals, very special. Good outdoor seating and very COVID safe, although lots of ppl indoors. They advertised a lobster special on Tuesdays (I think that is the day... this happened a few weeks ago). I logged on to their site and ordered the lobster for myself and another meal for my son, from their take out menu. I paid. I few minutes later, I received a call that the lobster was only for their 'dine in' clients. So, I guess, I don't count as an actual client even though I'm paying and tipping like an actual client. I told the person, "this is how this is going to go... you must comply with what you advertise. That is the law. Since you had lobster on the take out menu, you need to honor it for me. Then, you need to correct your online menu so this awkward situation doesn't occur again." He put me on hold while he conferred with management. When he returned he grudgingly (yes I could hear it in his voice) said they would make an allowance for me. I walked down to the restaurant, and had to wait for more than a half hour for when the website said my order would be ready. I sat with friends who were dining in... I got the stink eye when I came in and announced I was waiting for my lobster order. And, after all of that discomfort, the lobster meal was super small and not well prepared. I won't be going back. This is only the second time I ate at the restaurant and neither time was the food worth the price. Besides, I refuse to eat at restaurants that would rather embarrass the customer than realize their mistake. read more

I am so stuffed from my dinner last night, that I can hardly write in detail, as I am afraid I MAY order takeout AGAIN m- as in RIGHT NOW! Briefly, my cousin Gloria and I wanted to eat outdoors on a warm Friday and thought that as the posted dinner hours were from 5 - 8:30, we should arrive on the early side. So we got the sidewalk corner table, were taken care of by Richard the best waiter in town, and Jacob - a wonderful Manager who helps run the place. But the key is Alexander the chef and his Dad, Nunzio, the sommelier. They are fellow Italians from a long line of famous foodies - and politicians - in SF. I also grew up with their cousins in San Rafael, the Cincotta and Lazio family. But Alexander has created the perfect atmosphere and the most wonderful, creative menu. I find myself dreaming at night of something I have ONLY read about online or on their menu. Give it a try. You won't go to ANY other Italian place in town. They are new, Alexander is young, but since I first met his future Mother-in-Law, Susan and she recommended TKT when I told her I lived in San Rafael, I took her advice. They opened about a year before COVID hit, and although I have gotten take out half a dozen times, I have never had a full meal in the actual restaurant. We were the last to leave - at 10:30 pm. Although the inside dining room was packed (following all COVID protocols) their sidewalk tables and their outdoor "dining room" NEVER had an empty seat that night. Incredible Italian food so close to home! I cannot tell you how many times I drove to San Francisco and had Italian food that wasn't even close to how good The Kitchen Table is. All of the dishes are delicious. The ravioli uovo (which is what they're popular for) was out of this world. It's a ravioli with an egg in the middle that is extremely flavorful. Also, I really enjoyed the mushroom tortellini. If you want to check this place out, make a reservation. The location is fairly small so they're mostly run on reservations. Reserved a table a day prior for dinner. When we reached we were greeted by the host and she passed on the menu while we waited for them to clear some tables. Once seated we placed an order for the drinks. The wine list is pretty expansive and I loved my white wine. We also tried their bread+butter and maitake mushroom polenta appetizer which was pretty unique and well made. Then came our entrees: sausage pizza, sausage pasta and veggie gnocchi. The pasta was so tender and delicious, definitely felt freshly made. They didn't have an overload of cheese in any of their dishes which was a pleasant surprise. For desserts had their s'mores cake and it was pretty decent. The service was very prompt and quite good. Will definitely return again to try out more dishes. read more

All I can say is wow! This was one of the best meals I've had in a while, and definitely the best in San Rafael! We did not have a reservation but they were able to accommodate us with bar seating and I'm SO glad they did! From the apps to the desserts, everything was spot on and cooked absolutely p! We started with the mushroom polenta & crudo, had the steak main dish and mushroom tortelli, INCREDIBLE! And finished with the smores dessert and the pana cotta, both cooked perfectly! Also, the chef Zander cooks every single main course himself which you can watch while sitting at the bar, it's really impressive! I was looking forward to eating here as soon as I knew they were opening. It took me a while to go because I'm not big on making reservations. Well, we ate here tonight, with a reservation at 6:00. I was so excited to try The Kitchen Table, I got off work early and we showed up at 5:30 ready to eat at the newest place in town. We were greeted by the hostess with a nice smile and were seated immediately at a table by the front and between two occupied tables. The hostess asked if we'd like tap or sparkling water. Tap? Marin water had fluoride in it. Filter that toxin out. You are essentially offering your diners poison to go with your food. I don't drink sparkling water, so I opted for poison. The dining room was tastefully decorated and comfortable with the exception of the setting sun shining through the closed blinds. We started off with the pork riblets, two for $12. They were boneless, although about 3 inches long. Were they worth the price? They were good, but not something I would crave. We followed that with the kampachi crudo. Again it was a good dish, but I've had much better for the same price. I had the mushroom tortelli which was very good. It was a bit rich for me, but I can see how it could be a favorite for some. My partner had linguini and clams and she said the home made pasta was fresh, tender and cooked to perfection. The clam shells were beautiful, but she has had a much more flavorful clams and linguni dish than what The Kitchen Table offered. We ended with the smores. The flourless chocolate cake was dry and the dish was just average. I noticed the wait and bus staff had on tasteful all black clothes and the general manager had on jeans and a flannel shirt and the hostess had on a nice top and jeans. To me there was no flow in uniform. All black looks professional and jeans do not. What vibe are they going for? Overall I would say it would be better if the staff appeared to enjoy working there. I know this is just my perception, but perception makes a difference. One thing I loved and I've never seen it before in any restaurant, is the itemized bill came on the customers copy of the check. read more

Had a wonderful experience at The Kitchen Table. Made reservation for a date night with my Wife on Thursday December 20th. We arrived promptly for our 7:45 reservation and we were seated right on time. Our waiter was very attentive and the service was amazing. We did have one hiccup that they need to address. We ordered a bottle of Prosecco and it came room temperature. Sparkling wine or Champagne should always be served between 47 and 50 Fahrenheit. This was a little disappointing and they did their best by putting it on ice. Still had to wait too long for the bottle to chill to the correct temperature. Now let's get to the food. We had the Octopus which was prepared to perfection. We also had a salad that was amazing. Our main courses were prepared to perfection and had so much flavor. My Wife had the linguini with clams 18 With white wine, garlic, tomato, and butter and I had the risotto with seafood 22 and mushroom, artichokes, garlic lemon sauce For desert we had the buttermilk panna cotta with fresh seasonal fruit. They were out of the the kitchen table smores chocolate mousse, gram crackers, marshmallows Alexander is the Chef and his Brother Franklin is helping run the front until they find a General Manager. We own Wink Optics in San Anselmo and always dine local and checkout all the new restaurants. I would recommend to them they need to polish up the service just a little. They only gave us 10% off the Prosecco after serving it warm. Unfortunately, they would not give more off. Being a small business owner myself I would have taken better care of the situation especially since I let them know I owned a local business. You never serve sparkling wine or Champagne room temperature. Franklin even admitted that they did not have it in the wine fridge. One slight mistake . Overall the food and service was so amazing that we will overlook this minor inconvenience and definitely come back and we have already been recommending this new Italian restaurant to all of our friends and our patients from Wink Optics in San Anselmo. read more

My partner and I don't live here and was just visiting the area. Saw this new place and wanted to try it out. Reservations go fast; we were just lucky that someone canceled theirs before us. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the waiters were all really nice. However, I did not like my linguini clams-- 1) the linguini was either old or not cooked well, some were stuck together, some were hard and some were soft. 2) clams were very sandy. I would expect a nice restaurant would clean the clams better... On the other hand, my partner really liked the mushroom tortellini (I liked it too) and the wine! read more

We had the fried Brussel sprouts, Caesar salad, mushroom tortelli, and the mushroom pizza. Everything was sooo incredibly fresh and delicate tasting. had a 9:15 reservation via Yelp. got a text that a 5:00 slot was available but didn't get a chance to respond in 15 minutes as we were still hiking in the offline trails of nearby Larkspur. we then get a call that a table was ready at 8:45 so we had to rush in from our hotel. no complaints here as events happened to our benefit so far. the place is intimate with tables close enough to overhear conversations. specials were presented and we got enticed with the Catch Of The Day which was the Walu Hawaiian Butterfish. we also ordered the Linguini with Clams and finished our dinner with the popular Panna Cotta. food was certainly exceptional with clean plates attesting to this. this place is not cheap but that was expected. service was also 5/5 with the helpful and prompt staff. read more

What a disappointment this was! I think they are overly priced , prices just on the small plate of pasta was $ 28.00 and it was less than mediocre! Not only do they charge for bread and butter but they also add a Living Wage fee ! My plate of paste had no flavor and was smothered in butter , for this I paid $28. This place was such a blessing tonight -- we had the best time and food here. After a long day of hiking, I wanted something warm to fill my stomach and decided to give this place a try. Little did I know, it would become my favorite Italian joint in SR. We ordered three delicious entrees pictured below (I'm not even going to attempt spelling them out haha!), and everything was so decadent. This restaurant serves the best beignets I've ever had, and their in-house pasta complemented every dish perfectly. I've been raving about this place even before I left. This is another great restaurant in downtown San Rafael. We didn't have a reservation but were able to be seated at the bar which turned out to be a real treat. Getting to watch the chef at work was fantastic entertainment!! Watching the simple ingredients go into each meal made me feel so good about my food when it came out. One of my favorite dishes of all time is carbonara - and The Kitchen Table absolutely killed it. It was light and delicious, and egg based instead of heavy and creamy. Although we have watched Check Please fairly often for years, this is only the third time we visited a restaurant based on seeing it on that show, and the first two were disappointing, to varying degrees. So, we weren't really sure what to expect at TKT. As it turned out, it was one of the best meals that we've had in the Bay Area in a long time. We started with their warm bread, which has a crispy crust, and a chewy interior. Served with high quality butter, we had to force ourselves to stop eating it, to save room for the other dishes. We then shared an order of the pepper-infused tagliatelle, as an appetizer. It was delicious. I had the grilled skirt steak as a main dish, and Yetta had the salmon, which she said was among the best two or three salmon dishes she has ever had. Both the steak and the salmon were very tasty, and were cooked exactly as we had requested. We split an apple cobbler for dessert, which was made with intensely flavorful honeycrisp apples. My only mild criticisms are that the two glasses of wine that we had were just good, and fair, respectively, but not great. We were also surprised that the dessert menu didn't lean more towards Italian desserts. But overall, the people at TKT really know how to buy the best ingredients, and how to devise and prepare unique and distinctive dishes. Finally, we must mention the excellent service from waitress Abigail, the maitre d', and the busboy. We will definitely be back. read more

This has been on the must try list for a while- so why not now? I must have a disclaimer that I honestly feel to go food is hard- plating, internal temperature etc is all compromised when transported in a box. With this said, I think a 3 star for to go food is pretty great! I tried the cold octopus salad- this dish was ok, I felt it was a bit bland. It needed a bit more seasoning and some acid to really make all the other ingredients pop. I tried the mushroom ravioli with a brown butter sauce. This dish comes with tomatoes- even though not specified on the menu FYI. This dish was delicious, you could tell the pasta was handmade and made with care. The filling was delicious and it went perfectly with the butter and smashed tomatoes. It was a perfect bite and super yummy! For dessert I tried the lemon tarte which was not overly sweet. It had a pleasing sour note in the curd and the berry sauce on the side was the perfect pinch of "sugar" that highlighted all the notes in this dish. Bustling place. Two ladies next to us, lingering over their drinks, got politely but repeatedly asked to surrender their table. Which they did, no drama. Small space, high demand in downtown SR, so it's clear they need to maximize what they have through coordination, and in this particular case, coercion. But there's a note at the bottom of the menu warning diners arriving before 7 that they might be asked to relinquish their tables in timely fashion. Or words to that effect. As to the food, third time around, still underwhelming. Fries and fritto misto were great, but the tagliatelle was overcooked and mushy, as if it had been languishing in warm water for too long. Having been a prep cook back in the day, I can understand why pasta gets precooked, but at a certain point it loses so much texture that it just needs to be chucked. They graciously took it off the bill, which really wasn't necessary, and I opted for fish and chips, given that the fritto misto starter had been really good. Well, the fries were great, as I said before, and the truffle version probably even better, but I'm married to -- what? --a fungiphobe, so I couldn't go there. Regrettably. But the cod was still pink on the inside, which I've never seen in deep-fried fish before. I didn't even know that outcome was even possible. Long story short, we're big fans of the concept, a city-style restaurant in SR, but it's just too expensive and disappointing for what it presents. $33 for fish and chips seems steep. We live nearby and have been wanting to check out the restaurant for a while. We were excited by the menu options, both the food and the varieties of wine by the glass. However, many aspects of our experience were disappointing. First and foremost, most of what we were served was literally drenched in a soup of butter. There was a pool of butter sitting on my minuscule pork chop (I've gotten chops twice the size for the same price at top restaurants), the risotto was literally in a soup of butter (eaten risotto plenty of times and never seen that), as well as my wife's pasta. It was just way too much butter, and not enough of anything else. The staff was friendly, however I have never in my life felt so pestered by waiters to "move along". When telling the staff I was still trying to decide what I wanted, they would literally show up one minute later, multiple times. While eating, we were checked on at least four times. It was clear that they wanted us to move along even though we weren't taking especially long. When the bill finally came, I saw something I have never seen anywhere in my life: a "merchant service" charge of 3.5%. What does that even mean? I wouldn't eat here again. read more

Very lovely fri evening out on the street. Very attentive staff. Great menu choices. We started with the Parmesan crisps, eh, ok. They made them well, I just think it's not my jam. We then dig into the perfectly panko fried mozzarella with a bright marinara. I mean gorgeous crust! The mozzarella was very bland, could use more salt. That pretty much goes with most dishes here. It's very straight forward food, low on salt and very mellow flavors. We moved on to the crab cake. Fried to perfection and very fresh but the consistency of the crab cake was gluey. The bright acidic salad that accompanied the crab cake was luscious. I got the crab pasta. The fresh pasta was exquisite! Perfectly made, fabulous texture. The crab was super fresh. Again, just wished it had a bit more flavor. I took it home and added sautéed onion, mushroom, tomato and drizzled truffle oil and Parmesano Reggiano. Perfect. Hubby got the uovo pizza without the pancetta. He was underwhelmed, said it lacked flavor. I still like this place and will go again for sure but know it's straight forward clean food. Wine glass a little more than half from other restaurants but priced the same. Charge $2.00 for 1 small slice of bread. Full price for spaghetti that was a little more than the size of 1 scoop of ice cream. Catch of the day, no mention of price until bill comes. Because I guest was gluten free had to substitute mash potatoes and they didn't only charge for the full dinner but also for the substitute. Will never go back and will tell people not to go.
