Won't be back, waited 5 minutes to be seated eventually I found a waitress to ask if there's any tables and was escorted to the back dining room where we waited almost 5 minutes to be seated again. My wife and I both had the fillet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes and supposedly French green bean. I stopped in here with a friend of mine & was greeted by a very cool & hip bar scene, there was pop & r&b music playing inside, and sports playing on the big screen tv's. My waitress was very patient and attentive, I ordered the fried haddock that came with french fries, roumoloude sauce, and cole slaw. I must say that it was the bees knees! so much flavor , and huge portions!!! The slaw wasn't too soggy, and the fish had the perfect amount of seasoning! I was in absolute paradise! We were in town visiting and The Knickerbocker Tavern came recommended by our local friend! It was a great recommendation and overall we had a good time! This is a seat yourself type atmosphere and all the tables had wait staff service. The outdoor patio area in the back was so pretty and perfect for the weather we had!! They seemed super busy and it took our waitress a little while to get to our table. But what made up for the wait was that our waitress was a true gem!! She apologized for us waiting and was quick to take our food and drink orders. My drink came out first and my fiancé had to wait for his Guinness. When the Guinness came out they accidentally made me another drink, so I had a drink on the house! My drink was a grapefruit and blood orange collins. I thoroughly enjoyed it!! The food was worth the wait, it was very delicious. I had the fish and chips and ate every last bit!! It comes with a Cajun remoulade that was super tasty. The fish was ale battered and light, but crispy. The french fries were hand cut and tasted like real potatoes, which I love!! Definitely recommend the fish and chips!!! Glad I got to swing in here. I didn't realize how big the place was. We were sat in the back area and at a high top table by the fire place. I appreciated it, although fireplace wasn't running. After a slow start, we got our apps and drinks. Also, right after we got our apps, we got our meals so the table was crowded. I slowly ate and got full quickly. They were extra attentive and careful as well as cleanly and hygienic every single time. No messing around here. We shared Brisket Mac and Cheese & Crab Dip. Both were good, the little pita triangles were good with the crab dip. The brisket with mac and cheese under, was good but the actual cheese sauce on the noodles was bland. IDK if the brisket flavoring made it that way or what. It was supposed to have French onion crumbles on it but I didn't pick up on that. I snagged a Riesling and root beer (not together) but both were good. I think the soda filled me up. I ordered the valentine's menu shrimp linguine with parmesan and peas. I thought all of it tasted good. I just got really filled. I packed it up to go home and - not being weird - it was better the second day when I heated it up. Maybe its just me or I was hungrier the next day? I bet this place is cute when there is some big Steelers or PSU game going on. Out in the bar area. Our server not only had awesome colored hair but was friendly and accommodating by substituting one of the entree side dishes. His recommendations were appreciated as this was our first time here. The one-page menu offers several options for appetizers, small plates, sandwiches, and entrees. Pickled Deviled Eggs: Flavorful throughout the filling and egg white, these were a nice blend of slightly sour and savory. Pork Chop Dish: Certainly the thickest pork chop I've ever eaten. The wedge cut french fries were delicious; no ketchup required. While the collard greens were prepared well, I personally found them too heavily peppered. Fried Chicken: (The server was right, I should have ordered this dish) The thin boneless chicken breasts were lightly breaded and perfectly fried. Accompanied by collard greens and coleslaw. I recommend giving this dish a try if not sure what to order. Overall The Knickerbocker surprised me with the charming architecture, professional staff, and delicious food. Small tavern with good food. The four of us shared cheese steak perogies and crab dip. Very good. Individually our youngest ordered hot wings which she said were great, fajita bowl for the wife that was packed full of goodness; a cheesesteak for me that was damn good, but the fries were limp, and the other daughter tried the tomato bisque that was way too sweet to finish. There's a decent beer list of (mostly local ish) flavors. The service was excellent. We ate interior and the air was full blast to combat the summer weather outside. It's such a cool experience when you have the opportunity to go back to a place you had fun and enjoyed your time in. And it makes an amazing return visit when you have the same (or even better) wonderful experience as the one before. Even though my last visit was August 2014, it feels like I just came here yesterday. This place was a pleasant survive while traveling to Altoona, great mixed drinks that are higher end then your regular bar, great charcuterie board and bacon wrapped poppers. The steak was cooked to temp and the sauce was flavorful, the server brought it out a little late so the actual food temp of the steak dish was a little cold but she was new, so I was giving her a bit of a pass. A great dog friendly place to stop and have a beer and a burger in the courtyard, especially if like us you are just traveling through Altoona on the highway. We were grateful to the wonderful staff who were extremely welcoming and helped us reserve a table for us and our pooch. Only challenge was it did take quite some time for food to come out of the kitchen the night we were there. But it was clearly a busy night and when the food did finally arrive everything was very good. Would definitely return when going through Altoona again, and recommend it to other travelers. read more
