    62. Chicken with Mixed Vegetable
    Joe H.

Gross! I ordered chicken with mixed vegetables. The chicken tasted old in giant pieces with a tough leather like texture. I spit most of it out. Sauces were good. This place needs to reduce the size of their pieces of chicken and broccoli as well as improve the quality of ingredients. I recommend avoiding this place.

Simply amazing Dim Sum. After a month traveling around China I can say 'The Kung Fu' has excellent authentic Chinese food. If you're used to Americanized Chinese food, I highly recommend trying their Dim Sum shared small plates. We went on the weekend and the service was wonderful and very helpful. Pro tip: avoid tripe, chives, and durian if you are new to Chinese food.

    Egg Custard Bun

I am a Chinese American living in Lansing temporarily for school, originally from Florida. I have been to Hong Kong before and am always on the lookout for authentic Dim Sum. This restaurant so far is the only place I have tried Dim Sun in the area but it tastes really good, very close to authentic (if not there already!) I have ordered most of the steamed and fried menus (but none of the baked menu items) and they have all been tasty. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because I ordered one of my favorite desserts, Dan Tat (蛋撻) or "Egg Tart," which I have had fresh from a Chinese bakery back home in Tampa, and the one from The Kung Fun tasted a little grainy rather than the gelatin texture it's supposed to have. It didn't taste bad, but it didn't taste fresh or authentic. Otherwise, very good dim sum experience if you are looking for something in the Lansing area! Note: They do Dim Sum made to order, not on carts. Food usually comes out within 10 minutes of ordering though.

The place has no ambiance but perhaps it's expected in a college town. Menu has a great variety to my surprise. Service was friendly and fairly fast. Food was ok until my daughter found an ant in her broccoli noodle dish. If course, I asked them to remake that. I was told that since organic broccoli was used for the first time, they didn't realize it had ants. First time or not my daughter asked me not to make a big deal out of it and patiently waited for it to be remade. We did order a lot of food and I expected at least that particular dish would be taken off our bill but it wasn't. Oh well..not sure I'll be coming back.

Szechuan mini hotpot as of April 2022
    Giovanni L.

I have ordered the Szechuan mini-hotpot 3 or 4 times here, and it is by far the best Chinese food I have had in my life. The quail eggs are rich and buttery, and the fish falls apart on the spoon and is fresh every single time. Overall, this place has very authentic recipes, amazing service, and great atmosphere. I used to be a regular in the Chicago Chinatown restaurants when I lived there, and these chefs could take over down there and compete in any environment. This place is not often busy, but I think that only reflects the marketing because the food is top tier. It is the hidden gem you have been looking for. Food I have tried: I thought the Chonquing fish was excellent, and loved the almond chicken and scallion pancakes. The fried rice is not bad at all, but ask for something authentic for an out of this world experience. I haven't written a review in years, but got the app just to leave The Kung Fu my highest possible recommendation.

    C7. Thai Spicy Basil Chicken
    Allison R.

I really enjoyed my first experience at Kung Fu. I ordered carry out through Yelp/Grub Hub and the process was smooth. I really liked that they offered an American and Traditional menu, and their website made it easy to browse different options using their drop-down menu. I played it safe and tried the Thai Spicy Basil Chicken with white rice and a vegetable spring roll this time, but there are so many other traditional items I hope to try in the future. Everything I ordered was great and the portion size was filling. Definitely adding this spot to my favorites list!

    Chef special!

I was excited to hear that my family decided to meet up there for a post-Thanksgiving/birthday celebration for my niece the day after Thanksgiving. My brother arranged their private room for our group of 13 and it was a great experience. It took a bit for them to make sure the room was ready, but it was so cozy and pretty. The "happy birthday" menus are a nice touch. We were also able to bring in our own cake/cupcakes. We ordered some appetizers for the table - calamari and spinach artichoke dip. They were both good but the spinach artichoke dip was my favorite. The calamari was cooked nicely but a little bland. The dipping sauces were nice and a good variety. For my entree, I went with the Market Catch - king ora salmon. You can choose from several different options and select your preferred cooking method. I went with broiled and asked for it medium rare. Our main meals all came out at staggered times, but it wasn't too bad. I really liked the mashed potatoes that came with my plate. The fish was a little under seasoned, but cooked pretty close to medium rare. The portion size was great for me. Others had the fish and chips, shrimp and crab tortellini, seared scallops and risotto, etc. The shrimp and crab tortellini looked especially delicious! I didn't hear any complaints about the meals. I did have a bite of the clam chowder and found the clam I had to be pretty chewy and tough. Our server was really great the entire time, with refills constantly being poured and managing everyone's orders well. I would recommend this spot for a special occasion in their private room.

Here are all the things that went right: - we were immediately greeted by the bartender Jackson and presented menus and water and told about the featured cocktails -as we were deciding what to drink, I noticed a pretty impressive coctktail list and a list of some very good, rich red wines -the Angel's Envy Bourbon Berry Smash was delicious..spoken by someone who normally doesn't like bourbon but wanted to try an Angels Envy bourbon drink that was not too sweet. I chose the raspberry rosemary syrup as the berry of choice. My boyfriend had a well made gin and soda. -nice to see there were appetizer and entree specials. Makes you want to come back to see what will be on the specials list each week in addition to a nice well-rounded menu -Jackson helped us select among multiple good sounding entrees. As a pescatarian I wanted a seafood dish and decided on the suggested seafood risotto. My date was between a couple of fish dishes but after a discussion with the bartender and a further description he decided on the Maui Mahi with coconut risotto. We chose to split a salad rather than have an appetizer. -the meal--the salad came out on two plates so we did not need to divide the spring mixed berry and goat cheese salad. It was delicious and fresh and definitely enough for two side salads. We were also provided some warm crusty bread with olive oil and balsamic. Our entrees were of good portion size, visually appealing and HOT---not just warm---which I greatly appreciated and talked about after we left. The risotto was prepared perfectly by someone who clearly knows how to make a proper risotto--it was not gluey and set-up, but perfectly tender and creamy. The seafood was delicious. The scallops were seared nicely and not overly salty (something many restaurants don't understand is that you typically don't have to salt shellfish as it is salty/briny on its own). My boyfriend's mahi was sizable portion on top of an ever so slightly sweet and spicy coconut risotto. His was fantastic as well. We also enjoyed the sautéed zucchini that came with both..also nice and hot! -we had a delicious bottle of wine with dinner. After we paid for dinner and left with our remaining wine, we promptly came back in because of the heavy downpour of rain. We sat back down and finished our wine. The things that could be ever so slightly improved: -the lighting in the dining area is fitting of the decor and vibe of a nicer restaurant but the lighting at the bar is just too bright. Could maybe benefit from dimming them and possibly adding a few candals oe the small table/rechargeable lamps along the bar as it seemed wide enough. -the shrimp on the risotto should be two larger shrimp (8-10 size ) rather than the very small shrimp that don't seem to fit the vibe of the dish -there were only two options for dessert...maybe another one or two would be great -a little birdie told us that the restaurant will be having a happy hour menu soon (and a second location). We would LOVE for you to add some truffle fries with some sort of aioli...we can envision ourselves stopping in for those and some wine...often! Great addition to the limited higher end restaurants in the area. We look forward to many more meals there.

Pretentious bartender who really really wants to be known for being a mixologist. Don't you dare ask to modify any of his ingenious cocktail creations. I've been to many many bars in my lifetime. Nice bars, hole in the walls, distilleries, hotel bars, outdoor bars, cute little trailer-wedding bars, speakeasies. You get my point. My standards are high but i'm down wherever too. this is the first time anyone has refused to modify a drink for me. and i'm not talking about changing everything. i'm talking about swapping out mezcal for gin (there are barely any gin cocktails anymore). i've been here three or four times since the new bartender-- and i don't even sit at the bar anymore. the only redeeming quality of the place is the chef(s?) who I feel really takes care of people and makes the food with love and care and excellence. the burgers and steak are literal perfection. Le sigh. Travis if you're reading this-- Mike and I miss you!! Management, please try to get him back! I finally got in with a reservation and I was not disappointed. You absolutely must order steak here. Skip the sea bass or chicken and go for what they are known for. The Cowboy Ribeye was perfection. Juicy, seasoned beautifully, and so good that even though we ordered bleu cheese and horseradish sauce, we hardly touched them. Honestly, you do not need garnishes. To make the meal even better, try the Brussels with Pork Belly as a side to share. I could do without the pork belly, but the dish still worked really well. For a drink, the Nightcap was delicious and hit the spot. At first I was unsure, since the restaurant is small and the table next to us had a group of very loud business men, which made it hard to talk. That is the only reason I gave 4 stars for atmosphere. Thankfully they left early in our dinner, and the rest of the experience was wonderful. The service was excellent. We were told the steaks might take some time since they are large, but it did not feel like a long wait at all. I will definitely be coming back when I am craving steak. Come hungry because the portions are big. Highly recommended.

The mashed potatoes were ok, but are just there as a filler. Side: Michigan Kale Salad 2/5 - The ingredient list sounded superb, but the execution was not there. The kale pieces were LARGE and were hard to eat in bites. It desperately needed another chop (or few) and a deep tissue massage. The salad was also HEAVY on the red onion - if that's your thing, then this is a great salad for you.
