I've lived in the area for about 30 years and never noticed this restaurant! Decided to give it a try. There was only one other party there on a Friday night. It was very quiet. But a friend had recommended it so we were willing to give it a try. Overall a great Chinese food experience. The menu says it's a Sichuan restaurant. And they had Sichuan dishes plus the "American" Chinese dishes you'd expect. I see they also do dim sum but we didn't try that. They have a ton of vegetarian options! The server told us that they have been open since about 2011 and they used to only have traditional Sichuan food. Their primary customer base was international students who wanted authentic Chinese food like they had at home. But after Covid there were few international students from China in town and their business was struggling, so they expanded the menu to appeal to American tastes. As a result, the menu is huge! And you can choose between authentic Chinese or American style. We tried 2 dishes and enjoyed them both. We will definitely return and try some others. It's not a fancy restaurant but there are comfortable seats for 2 and big round tables with turntables for parties of 10 who want to share dishes. The staff is a very nice and helpful family. Reasonably priced though I have definitely had better for cheaper, quick service, reminds me a lot of home. I missed dim sum, Kung fu hit that fix for me. I tried this place out for the first time tonight through Uber eats. They have a new customer for life. The orange chicken with lo mein is phenomenal. We also got Szechuan beef, which is equally fantastic. I was not expecting a crab Rangoon and eggroll to come with, which were both very good. Gross! I ordered chicken with mixed vegetables. The chicken tasted old in giant pieces with a tough leather like texture. I spit most of it out. Sauces were good. Simply amazing Dim Sum. After a month traveling around China I can say 'The Kung Fu' has excellent authentic Chinese food. If you're used to Americanized Chinese food, I highly recommend trying their Dim Sum shared small plates. We went on the weekend and the service was wonderful and very helpful. I am a Chinese American living in Lansing temporarily for school, originally from Florida. I have been to Hong Kong before and am always on the lookout for authentic Dim Sum. This restaurant so far is the only place I have tried Dim Sun in the area but it tastes really good, very close to authentic (if not there already!) I have ordered most of the steamed and fried menus (but none of the baked menu items) and they have all been tasty. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because I ordered one of my favorite desserts, Dan Tat (蛋撻) or "Egg Tart," which I have had fresh from a Chinese bakery back home in Tampa, and the one from The Kung Fun tasted a little grainy rather than the gelatin texture it's supposed to have. It didn't taste bad, but it didn't taste fresh or authentic. Otherwise, very good dim sum experience if you are looking for something in the Lansing area! Had several dim sum items here: *Shrimp dumpling: Chunks of shrimp, it was tasty *Pork ribs w/black bean sauce: These are the largest ribs I've had in this dish. That was nice because it was meatier vs mostly bone *Shrimp rice roll: Wished the rice roll was a bit thinner *Pan fried radish cake: Needed to be fried a bit more *Fried taro dumplings: This is good but would have liked it to be crispier. *Steamed bbq pork bun: Not much filling. *Egg tarts: The bottom of the tart shell wasn't completely cooked. Needed more bake time *Bake taro buns: Needed to be baked a bit longer so when you break into the bun the top kind of flakes/crumble off. *Salted fish fried rice: It was just rice, salted fish and egg. No green onions or veggies (no peas or carrots). Needed a bit more salted fish. 4 stars with all these comments..... The taste wasn't bad. All the food just needed a bit more flavor and cooked a bit longer on some items to make them crispier. Maybe they don't use much msg so the lack of flavor? Otherwise I enjoyed it. The place has no ambiance but perhaps it's expected in a college town. Menu has a great variety to my surprise. Service was friendly and fairly fast. Food was ok until my daughter found an ant in her broccoli noodle dish. If course, I asked them to remake that. I was told that since organic broccoli was used for the first time, they didn't realize it had ants. First time or not my daughter asked me not to make a big deal out of it and patiently waited for it to be remade. I have ordered the Szechuan mini-hotpot 3 or 4 times here, and it is by far the best Chinese food I have had in my life. The quail eggs are rich and buttery, and the fish falls apart on the spoon and is fresh every single time. Overall, this place has very authentic recipes, amazing service, and great atmosphere. I used to be a regular in the Chicago Chinatown restaurants when I lived there, and these chefs could take over down there and compete in any environment. This place is not often busy, but I think that only reflects the marketing because the food is top tier. It is the hidden gem you have been looking for. Food I have tried: I thought the Chonquing fish was excellent, and loved the almond chicken and scallion pancakes. The fried rice is not bad at all, but ask for something authentic for an out of this world experience. Didn't even get a chance to order my food. Lady has an attitude from the moment I walked in the door. She was really upset when I asked to see a menu. I asked to make the gravy Spicy with my egg foo young. She yelled telling me she can't make the gravy Spicy it's already made. I clarified what I meant saying that after cooked, I would like the spice on top of the gravy. A request I ask 100% of the time any Chinese restaurant I go to. 99% of the restaurants honor the simple request without me even having to clarify. Instead she lost it and yelled at me telling me that she makes authentic American Chinese etc. it's her right to not honor my simple request, I still would've ordered but she's lost her mind thinking I'm about to eat there after getting yelled at. Dim sum is amazing~ I think Golden wok combined with this place and I've never been happier. When Golden wok closed I craved chicken feet for the longest time and I was so happy to find this place. All of their food is 5 star worthy. It's a little corner so it might be hard to miss (it's right next to Medawar jewelers) but I highly recommend getting food here to go or to eat here. I really enjoyed my first experience at Kung Fu. I ordered carry out through Yelp/Grub Hub and the process was smooth. I really liked that they offered an American and Traditional menu, and their website made it easy to browse different options using their drop-down menu. I played it safe and tried the Thai Spicy Basil Chicken with white rice and a vegetable spring roll this time, but there are so many other traditional items I hope to try in the future. I don't know how this place is not packed every night. I have dined there on several occasions and have always had excellent service and food. Honestly I am normally the only white person in the place; the waitress, whose family owns the place, said they have a large clientele from the Asian students at MSU due to the authentic cuisine. Food recommendations- Try the steamed pork buns. I think they are handmade upon ordering because you may have to wait a few, but the wait is well worth it. They come with the most delicious sauce. I always order the chicken Szechwan hot wok. If you like spicy, give it a whirl! You will not be disappointed. I have also tried and enjoyed the short ribs. Seriously terrible food and we got sick. I hate to bring a place down during covid but not only is the food terrible, barely having flavor, but the MEAT WAS UNCOOKED. Literally pulled apart some beef and it was barely cooked. Even the vegetables, the ones that didn't look like they came from a can, were only par-cooked, and the fried items weren't even fully fried. This is my first time eating at this restaurant and I ordered $30 worth of food because I was starving and craving two different dishes. I ordered fried dumplings that are absolutely awful due to the fact that the chicken inside was not fully cooked. I also got the Mongolian chicken that had little to no flavor and more water or sauce in it than anything, I also asked for it extra spicy which was not received. Last ting I got was the General tsos chicken which is the best food I've received out of this order besides the fact that it is over cooked. The management is once again some Chinese "getting by" folks who tries best at ripping off the American Orange Chicken Goers. Authentic??? Really??? Doing take out is a much better experience than it is doing delivery. Almost every time I order delivery something wrong happens to my order. I order from this place often as I prefer authentic Chinese food compared to its Americanized rivals. Today, knowing I'd be busy for New Year's Eve and not having enough time to cook, I ordered food with the intention of " maybe I'll get the food before I get home" with the delivery system. Until I realized it would cost $20 more for a delivery than just to pick it up on my way home. The only catch was that the person who picked up food ahead of me took my order. And I must have been the last to order a particular dish because when I explained to the staff that there was nothing there for me to pick up and she told me they ran out. They were gracious and provided me with the next best thing. And even included a box of fries for free which proved useful for hungry kids while we waited for our food to be reprepaired. The staff member was friendly and apologetic which it wasn't even their fault. But overall, my food was served steaming hot. I had wanted to try this new Sichuan restaurant for a few weeks now, but the final incentive came in the form of a free appetizer coupon in the mail! I grabbed a few friends and headed over on a Saturday night. The place was filled (with chinese people) around 5:30, so that was a very good sign. We ordered a cold appetizer- the spicy tofu ($5.95). It was incredible! The mala flavor of the sichuan province was very well represented in this little dish. It is extremely spicy, so order it with caution. All three of us enjoyed that one a lot. We ordered three entrees- fragrant eggplant ($9.95), sichuan shrimp ($12.95), and mapo tofu ($9.95). All three were fantastic! The fragrant eggplant was sweet and tangy, but not spicy at all. I asked for a side of chili oil, so I was happy. The sichuan shrimp was amazing! Nice succulent shrimp with vegetables in a spicy sauce. I will be ordering that one again for sure. The mapo tofu was also very authentic, so vegetarians, be warned, there is ground meat in this dish. We ate our hearts out! The only reason I didn't give this place all 5 stars was because the service was a disaster. There were only 3 waitresses for a packed house, and most of the guests, including us, were getting impatient for refilled drinks, food orders, etc. I hope this gets more streamlined as they get into the swing of things. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Kung Fu by some Chinese friends. Kung Fu is located in Frandor, next to Big John's Steak and Onion. This restaurant used to be a Los Tres Amigos Express. The decor inside is rather plain, but most importantly, appeared to be very clean. Kung Fu has a lunch buffet during the week for $6.50. My friends said the lunch buffet has some fairly authentic Chinese food on it. I asked my friends to order what they felt was good, and the most authentic, as I have been searching for a non-Americanized Chinese restaurant. They told me that the style at Kung Fu is more Northern-China, and spicy. Kung Fu is known for spicy dishes, in fact, when you go to their website, their tagline is "We will spice up your throat". If you aren't into spicy food, there are several non-spicy items on the menu. We shared several dishes including: - #06 -Sichuan Cold Chicken- A delish appetizer that was sliced cold chicken, with a flavorful sauce, sprinkled with green onions and sesame seeds (non spicy). - #43- Spicy Rabbit- Cut up roasted rabbit with a spicy sauce- very tasty, just have to get used to eating around the bones a bit. - #45 Fatong Fish- A huge, hot bowl that contained the fish that was cooked in a spicy broth with vegetables. This was spicy, but I find if I did not eat the peppers directly it was really good and flavorful. - #79 Green Pepper with Beef- This was a non spicy dish with cooked strips of beef and green pepper- this dish had a lot of flavor and was much better than the standard beef/peppers at Chinese restaurants. #122- Sweet Potato in Sticky Rice Pie- This dish is listed under desserts, but we ate it with our meal. I was picturing a pie, but this really looks more like a cookie. The sweetness level was low, it had about the sweetness of a sweet potato. It was lightly fried and coated in sesame seeds. I really enjoyed this one! Now that I have had a tutorial from my Chinese friends, I feel excited to go back and try some more authentic Chinese food. They said I really can't go wrong with the menu, and the dishes above are their personal favorites. The service was friendly, and the food came out fast. Bad News first - lemon chicken call-in was a plastic bin of yellow sweet sour stuff to pour on a shoeleather patty ... i've had worse but wont eat this again. Good News is that when i sat at counter on busy Friday night as walkin, i got the best orange chicken i've had [other than my own] on a long damn time. Dark meat, breaded, not overcooked, in very flavorful, authentically 'hot' [i beg for a bit of it but am not a Hot freak - find Chinese eateries reluctant to trust western palates]. Took a long time to make - old boy Chinese cook, working w/ scratch materials. Place was full of Chinese, btw - always a Good Sign. Ingredients fresh, staff works hard/fast and pays attention to what they're doing. Caught tail end of a lunch buffet and its probably better when you're there three hours earlier - not a large selection but if prepared well would be fine -- dinner 12 bucks / lunch 6 = Fair Enough, maybe on low side. Awful name - pay no mind. DO think about what you order - menu is still a little bit Original and you can probably find something a little out of the ordinary here ... but Apple Jade and Hong Kong are also Frandor area, and same can be said for them. I used to eat here a lot. However, the most recent experience has made me never ever want to eat here anymore. Both my Gf and I ordered take out. It came fast. Only 30 minutes. But the quantity has reduced to half of what it was. The Horrible thing is. The food made two of us bad stomach. We spent a night dealing with medicine. I will not recommend you come here. We've been coming here since we moved to Lansing 3 years ago. The owner has always been very pleasant and although their wait staff don't speak English well, you can see their progress through the years that they have been trying to learn and now the lady who waits on us can even take order on the phone now. The Sichuan style dishes are always the bee's knee. Even though I've never been to Sichuan province in China, I know what good food tastes like. This place just knows flavors and every dishes we tried (off the authentic menu, we haven't tried American Chinese menu, why would you when you can experiment?) has been explosion of deliciousness. All Chinese restaurants always look a little dingy, but Kungfu definitely is much cleaner than a lot of places and sure knows how to deliver scrumptious meals. Worth every penny! read more
