I'm in the process of cleaning out a storage locker because they keep raising my rent on it…read more.. A couple items I had in storage were sports related. A 10.5 ft Viper kayak (used a couple of times) and a kayak cart (still new in box). I decided to take both into Play It Again Sports. I didn't really want to deal with selling them privately on eBay (local pick up), Craigslist, or FB Marketplace. Play It Again Sports is the only place I know of to sell stuff like this other than a normal consignment shop (Stuff Etc. or a different place like that). If you are a seller they will give you cash or in store credit. The in store credit offer will be more than the cash offer. The kayak was purchased for $240ish new a few years ago. The gentlemen I was dealing with at Play It Again Sports said they'd sell it for around $100... Offered me $50 The kayak cart was purchased for $40. Was still new in box... They said they'd give me $7 If you don't mind the back and forth messages with possible buyers. People lowballing you. Having to arrange to meet someone...who may or may not show up, etc. Selling privately might be a better option for you... As far as putting the maximum amount of cash in your pocket...selling privately is definitely going to be the better way to go Like I said... I didn't want to deal with the hassle of selling these privately so I took their offer. At least it paid for dinner that night for my son and I... So you know what to expect... As a buyer you can probably plan on getting a used item for half off new retail. Maybe less if the item has been sitting for a LONG time. As a seller Play It Again Sports is probably going to sell your used item for half of new retail, and offer you half of that in cash (25%ish of new retail). It's a great resource to have to get rid of unneeded sports items. You at least get a little money back v. donating the items to Goodwill, etc. To wrap things up... I found the staff here to be polite and great to work with. I dropped in with no call ahead and the process was simple and easy. If you have sports equipment to get rid of maybe slide in and check them out... Doesn't cost you anything but time. Don't like the offer you can always say no and choose to go in another direction. If you are a parent looking to save a buck... Definitely stop in!

My kid finally decided to go for a high school career in softball. As a catcher, the starter kits…read morecan be exorbitant in cost, not to mention shoes, and the uniforms, etc. we got her a full set of used gear, including women's size 11 shoes, catchers mask, chest guard, shin guards, summer pants, batting gloves, and a sports bag all for under half the cost of what a new kit of Catcher gear would cost!! Can't say how happy I am with the shop. It was definitely full, but clean with great friendly service. We had a great experience!

This place is a joke! I ordered online 5 different pair of mens pants. Called their customer…read moreservice line to find out why the freight was so ridiculously high. I was told the customer pays to have them shipped to one location then pays to have them shipped to the final destination. I decided to go ahead with the purchase they were all name brand and still less than I could find online. Here is what I received later that day to my inbox. Over all the years I've visited Ames, I've rarely travelled over to the West Side where Lincoln Way…read moresoon merges US 30. There's a now shuttered restaurant where my Sister had her rehearsal dinner and I sometimes passed Ames Surplus, which as it turns out has been folded into the 2-building complex that is called Jax Outdoor gear. The military surplus part of this store is not much more than a couple short aisles. Past that, Jax has loads of outdoor gear, fishing and hunting inventory, clothing, footwear, and even a corner for Boy and Girl scout supplies. It's all very high quality merchandise and a good value. I came in looking for some Carhartt pants, which they don't currently stock. I left very impressed and with a cool and nicely priced little Gerber knife. I found store staff to be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I'll be back in Ames in a few months (or so), and I'm be sure to stop in again. I'm sure there will be new stuff to admire or goods that I missed during the last visit. And there's no need to drive all the way to Des Moines.
