The staff is rude, they charged a $100 deposit on checkin and then when we had a small emergency in the room and came down 20m after checkout time, stole the $100 deposit. This was one of the most unimpressive stays we've ever had in NYC. I can understand why it's non refundable because they would be refunding a lot. I have made it known to them three different times/ways about my unhappiness with my stay and received no response or correction so reviews are next unfortunately. It is not worth the price I paid at all (over $500 for three nights) We had three lightbulbs out upon arrival and The maintenance man would not go away until I let him in, he stated the hotel said they had to change the lightbulbs then and there and we MUST let him in while we were trying to rest which I found very inappropriate. I also do not understand having a TV and remote in the room but it does not work at all? Why have a non working tv and remote, it might've helped drown out all the noise? Also was told we had wifi in the room but we did not have that either. The night we checked in my daughter wanted a shower but they were both disgusting and dirty and not cleaned. The next day I took a shower and the water smelt like sewage. Sleep is definitely something you will NOT get by staying here between the loudness of outside (the provided earplugs do not work) and the loud kids staying next door getting any rest on this trip was not going to happen at all. I also asked that no one enter my room without us there and everyday the housekeeping entered even though I asked them not too. The only nice thing about staying here was the breakfast for two days, other than that I feel really taken advantage of and can see why you do not have refundable cancellations because everyone would do that. I tried because I had a better deal somewhere else and you said you would not refund so I was just stuck staying here and it was the most unpleasant stay ever. We have stayed at The Leo House many times over the last several years so I know the layout and the rooms. This year we had seven family members staying. I was SO disappointed in the following items: 1. The price we paid (hero price) was raided up to market price as we checked in for the two rooms for my kids. I expect that if this was an issue, they would let us know AHEAD of time and not raise rates by many hundreds of dollars with no warning, especially on a NON-refundable situation?????. 2. The shower rooms have NOT been updated or improved at all. It was missing tiles on the floors and walls, rust everywhere, caulking was applied over mold and layered thick, hair in drains, paint was chipping and water damaged the areas, it was gross. 3. The temp from radiator in every room was so hot and dry that it was uncomfortable to sleep. I called the front desk and they said to open the windows (25 degrees outdoors). We slept with the windows as wide as they would open which amplified the noises outside (earplugs were provided). 4. In the rooms there were open outlets with outlet covers on the room floors with piles of wires everywhere. Not only a safety issue but just shows that they do not care what customers think of their clutter. As usual, the front desk staff was robotic, slow and exasperated by any requests. read more

The Leo House provides bare-bones accommodations at slightly lower than market rates. Although clean, the rooms are primitive, bare floors, and damaged furniture. Worst however, is their lack of humanity despite their high Catholic profile. I was in NYC for cancer treatment at Sloan-Kettering when an MRI that morning revealed a brain metastasis, so I had to return home as some life-saving medication was delivered to my residence in Virginia. A changed diagnosis made it imperative that I begin this course of medication immediately. The Leo House management refused to cancel the charge for a room even though I informed them at 1pm of that day that I would never be able to occupy the room that night. Just looking for a reasonably priced place for my wife to sleep from midnight to 8 AM after an international flight. My wife called when she arrived and said I can't stay here. She's from Brazil and used to roughing it, but this was too much, moldy, looking tub, industrial, looking toilet, peeling paint, nobody would help her with heavy bags, despite injured hand, just a nightmare And she couldn't sleep. Just stayed awake for the night. When I called to cancel a date to stay in this hotel three weeks down the road when I was expected to be in town next they refused to let me cancel, saying I chosen nonrefundable option and it doesn't matter that it's three weeks away and they can rent the room to somebody else they want my money too. The supervisor was incredibly snappy and rude very hard to believe this is a Catholic organization, I should've read the horrific reviews before scheduling it for my wife or myself, and we are contesting it on our credit card the future date not even this date. We were off on an adventure to drop my son off at school. We wanted to stay somewhere that was reasonably priced. My friend recommended the place and we thought, why not, let's try it. it is located in the Chelsea district and upon entering it has just the right amount of security. We were greeted and given our room key. They have strict rules but nothing that was to crazy. The room is basic, a shower, a bed and a small closet with an air conditioner in the window. Clean and comfortable. We slept great and in the morning I made it down to their patio for a little yoga and prayer. If you are looking for a safe space to rest your head after a long day of NYC, this is a perfect spot! it's no 5 star luxury hotel, but it hit all the necessary boxes for me: convenient and safe location, clean and new enough amenities, good breakfast options, helpful concierge, no bugs or critters, they hold luggage before check in, air conditioning works quickly. my cons: only one working elevator, my tv didn't work, the wifi didn't work very well, i was only allowed a new towel in exchange for my dirty one, no guests in your room. this didn't bother me at all, but you need to drop your key off every time you leave then tell concierge your room number when you return - one less thing to worry about! for the cheap price and being 130 years old, it's a great stay for a low standard single traveler! read more

This is an older property, read up on the history of this building if you're curious. I love it. Don't trip here - It's a religious guest house NOT a typical hotel or even a motel. Very simple lodging and run a certain way. The service can sometimes be stern, but I have also met the kindest, loveliest people that work here. Refunds are tricky, non existent past a certain point, so know that. Probably best not to commit unless your plans are solid. Suggest visitors read the rules prior to arrival. I have stayed here many times. Again, it's an older property, owned by the Catholics, hasn't been updated too much over the decades. It doesn't smell. It's always appeared quite clean to me, and I am a stickler for cleanliness. Amenities that one may be accustomed to may not be offered. If you know what you are signing up for, it's always fine and a unique stay. I can sometimes hear the hallway noises a bit much from the room, but I have experienced that at other very expensive NY hotels. It's a great location, it's affordable. Horrible service. We checked in, the room was so, I don't know how to explain it. There was no Air Conditioning and it was HOT in there. The bathroom window works open but the main room window would not. You could hear ever sound in your room from the hallway, elevator, hallway (shared bathroom). There was absolutely no privacy. The front desk man called our room and was very rude to me. Offered a fan. They brought up a fan covered in 5 years worth of dust. I checked with Expedia about getting a different place to stay. The front desk refused a refund for our 4 night stay, even though we were there less than 45 minutes, not even a partial refund. At checkin she noted she was working to ensure rooms for a friend and me would be consistent with the specifics I had requested, And she noted that a last minute cancellation meant our friend could also stay at Leo House rather than being at different lodging she had booked because there had been no vacancy at Leo House. Natalia took the time to study the map and determine just which storage locker option was closest to the theater where we were headed given our need to store our luggage in order to be on time to catch our bus home. She emailed all the specifics that made this otherwise stressful arrangement go so smoothly. Natalia literally answered every question with warmth and attention to detail. In combination with all the other staff at Leo Houe (including those n the dining room) we felt consistent competency was combined with kindness. Can't wait to stay again. read more

The Leo House is a dual purpose Catholic hotel in the Chelsea neighborhood on the west side of NYC. It serves as a religious center and as a public hotel. If you're looking for a reasonably-priced hotel but aren't particularly Catholic (or are an out-and-out atheist), don't fret. While there is certainly a religious flair to Leo House, non-Catholics are welcome and you will feel no pressure to pretend to be a Catholic. The hotel side of their mission functions as just that - a hotel. Rooms are a bit cramped and fairly spartan but have been upgraded to include probably the most important modern amenity - wifi, which works pretty well. Bathrooms are even smaller but functional. It's an old building but the plumbing works.There are some rooms that don't include a shower and you have to use the small communal shower facility, which seemed clean and basically OK. Leo House serves a nice buffet-style breakfast, 7AM - 10AM. It reminds me a lot of what you get at Hampton Inn, except the food is a notch better. The dining room is on the second floor and is large enough to accommodate quite a few people. It's a nice breakfast option in a city (and neighborhood) that boasts a lot of options. The hotel front door is secure - you have to get buzzed in to open the interior door (and sometimes the exterior one). Room keys - actual hefty metal keys! - don't leave the hotel but are left at the front desk. Checkin is quick and friendly. My wife has stayed at The Leo House several times and I stayed four nights recently. I will probably return here for my next visit to NYC. Along with being a nice hotel, Leo House is located in a good area of the city - you can walk easily to a lot of stuff nearby. read more

Booked an overnight stay for a renovated room and were given a run-down foul-smelling room when we arrived. When calling down to the front desk they stated there were no other rooms available. The housekeeper came up to the room and immediately recognized the odor and the only option she provided was the can of Lysol she brought with her. Called the front desk again and stated this was not acceptable and they stated we can check out and get a refund. When we did that, they stated we would have to wait until Monday to contact the Front Desk Manager. Called her on Monday and she stated she could not do anything until speaking with the Director that would not be in until Wednesday. Very unaccommodating giving us the run around. As the reviews say, the walls are falling apart, but it doesn't matter when you sleep. I was suggessted that there are bed bugs, but that is not the case. The only complaints were that the air conditioning was not installed in time for the season when the temperature reaches 78 degrees and the internet connection was unstable. The breakfast is nice than other hotels. I have seen some not good reviews, but the problem is that all prices are too high in NYC. They are doing well. read more

What a lovely oasis in the city! My wife and I stayed two nights here, and as a member of the clergy I got a very nice discounted rate. When we were worried about arriving too late, the reception folks were very responsive. We had a "European-style" room, meaning that we used a shower down the hall from our room. Each morning we had a fabulous, hot breakfast buffet. When we were checking out we stored our luggage in their cloak room while we visited the Met uptown. And the location in Chelsea is so close to the High Line, piers on the Hudson, and wonderful cafes! We will definitely book here again when we visit NYC next time! read more

The staff are all excellent - to a person - each are kind and courteous and always very helpful. Cable TV and fast internet. A full hot breakfast (delicious eggs!) served @ 7AM M-F. Bring quarters for vending machines. For me, the amenities are all I need for a 5-day stay in a great neighborhood and amazing city: a room for sleeping, private bath and a decent breakfast. While a guest at The Leo House, I lost my purse containing all my cash, credit cards and I.d. Fortunately for me I was traveling with my daughter who covered my expenses until I got home. The staff at The Leo House were most helpful looking with me for my purse, but it was nowhere to be found. Imagine my joy when I got a call from Leo House staff saying the purse had been found and was being overnighted to me! As soon as I got it, I unfroze my credit cards and resumed normal life. I would say this Leo House is an excellent value for a certain type of traveler. If you want a large fancy room with room service and a pool, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for a clean, safe place to stay and enjoy old things with a bit of character you'll love it. I never really spend much time in my hotel rooms when visiting New York anyhow. It's close to he high line, C and E subway line, and a reasonable walk from Penn station. My room was clean, very small, and perfect for me. Everything is old and perhaps a bit worn, but still in good working order. Breakfast Monday morning was well prepared and would probably be a more congenial affair in non Covid-19 times. They have a luggage storage room, which is a must when traveling by train. The back garden is a nice place to enjoy some takeout diner if eating inside is not your thing in these odd times. They provide earplugs, but I didn't need to use them. The air conditioner provided white noise and the clientele didn't strike me as the loud and rowdy type. The only issues I have were: they make you leave the key at the front desk when you leave the building (slightly odd and annoying), and the lack of water pressure in the shower (a problem inherent to every hotel in Manhattan as far as I can tell.) Lastly, it's owned by an order of Catholic nuns and is definitely very Catholic. There's crucifixes everywhere, but no one is trying to push their religion on guests. You'll be warmly welcomed whatever your religious views. You should stick your head into the chapel and enjoy the beauty of the stained glass regardless. read more

The rooms are very simple, but there is wi-fi, TV, and in-room safe. I stayed in a single with a 1/2 bath for one night. I did not use the shared shower facilities, so I can't weigh in on them. the weirdest hotel my friend and I have ever stayed in. When we first arrived we had housekeeping done every day for about 5 days but they seemed to give up after that. It got to the point where we had an accumulation of trash from a week of no housekeeping. We had to take our several trash bags downstairs by ourselves AND when we informed the front desk they did nothing about it. No point in letting them know, they didn't ask what room we were from etc. Not a surprise that our room wasn't cleaned afterwards either. We almost ran out of toilet paper... NEVER in our lives in any hotel have we ever had to leave our room key at the front desk before heading out, giving us the impression that they don't trust not to lose the key. the breakfast is terrible. We were served the exact same thing for 2 weeks straight. It's bizarre that you have to ASK someone to serve you the food, which again made us think they didn't trust the guests enough to serve themselves. the creepy bald man at the front desk was the cherry on top. If you're a woman staying at this hotel please be wary of this man doing the night shift. Every time me and my friend went out he would be there when we came back, giving us disgusting up and down looks (how un-Catholic of him). One day we were walking through the lobby and a guest was asking him what he planned to do about the RATS in the hotel to which he pretended not to know about, saying she's "embarrassing him in front of his boss". read more

I generally enjoyed my stay at the Leo Catholic Guesthouse. I stayed two nights for a conference in Chelsea and a dance concert at the Joyce, so it was incredibly convenient to both. I did not take advantage of the dining or the chapel, unfortunately, but I did enjoy the free rosary which had been blessed. Again, I spent most of my time away from the hotel, but the time I spent there was pleasant. Chelsea is one of the quieter neighborhoods of NYC. BE WARNED! Air conditioning units are not set up in the windows in May... and on a hot day (and there will be hot days in Manhattan in May), the room is STIFLING. No fans are provided. No ceiling fans. There is no air circulation at all. You can try opening the windows, but again, on a hot day in NYC, there will be no breeze. They do have air conditioning in the summer (not sure when they install them?)... but you are taking a risk in May for sure. read more
