Great tap selection and their wine list is pretty extensive to cover all palates. While the appetizers list looked good, we were not starving so we went right for the mains. This is a rare instance where we had a decidedly subpar experience and yet would still give the place another shot. My top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality and I came here for brunch on our way back from Boston (this is right around the halfway point for us) after there was a long wait at our first/preferred destination down the street. There wasn't a wait time at all here despite Library simultaneously hosting at least one event in a different area on the establishment, but maybe that should have told us something. Super cool interior, and there's no way around it. The building very obviously housed a legit library back in the day, complete with Doric columns (a term I usually reserve for describing presidential monuments, not restaurants), and the current business leans into it, as they should. You can see in the accompanying photo that their beer tap at the bar has book covers on them, and a lot of the original interior has been preserved. So understandably, you can see why they also sell themselves as an event space; you can play around with a couple of different business models here. Without a doubt the biggest selling point we saw on our visit. Library had an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet, which is a concept I try to typically avoid because I don't possess any portion control (there are memories from the 1990s surrounding Pizza Hut and their lunch buffet that I'm still not willing to fully address) but honestly? It wasn't a problem here, and that's not a compliment. The set-up was pretty impressive; they had a pastry table, an omelet station (I think there was a roast beef or pot roast situation over here as well?) where a cook was serving up made-to-order requests, and a long table of self-serve items for both breakfast and then lunch further down the line. So you had a LOT of options depending on how your palate was feeling. Unfortunately almost everything was a giant miss. The eggs tasted like they were made from powder, the pastries were stale and/or tasteless and virtually all of the food came off as the worst kind of mass produced meal, something you'd encounter in a very low-end motel offering. The only item worth recommending was the roasted potatoes, which I thought were very flavorful and the only item that didn't require copious amounts of additional seasoning. It was so universally mediocre I'm genuinely surprised this is still something they offer every Sunday - the quality just isn't good so it feels like an unforced error to do buffet style in lieu of a more traditional sit-down brunch. Our bartender was friendly; she wasn't consistently attentive especially in the second half of the meal (we were trying to make eye contact for close to 10 minutes for the check, and she was nearby for all of it) but when she was around she was professional and accommodating. This could be a mark against us as degenerates, but we both thought the mimosas were a little too heavy on the orange juice (I'm not looking for gasoline in my brunch beverages, but ideally a nice hue on the cheeks emerges). I have to think the brunch is not their specialty - and if it is, that's a little concerning. But if I'm back in the area during a different time of week/day, I'd see if something else works here. read more

My expectations were high for this place. The ambiance, decor and location are all on point. Cozy, chic, New England vibes. My friend and I started with a glass of wine, and the service in the beginning was good. However things quickly went downhill. This library proves you can't judge a book by its cover. We ordered the calamari appetizer. When it arrived, I opened my silverware from the napkin and discovered that my fork was filthy-- a giant glob of white, crusty food, the size of a dime, was still stuck between the prongs. I waited for my waitress to check in (she didn't deliver the food) but she never came. We tried to get the attention of another waitress and were ignored. After 10 minutes, with my calamari growing cold, I eventually walked to the bar to get a replacement. The bartended exclaimed, "Gross!" -- my sentiments exactly-- when I showed him the fork. By the time I actually sat down to eat, the calamari was cold. It was also super tough and chewy. There were hardly any peppers. We didn't eat much of it. I love French food, and I ordered the duck for dinner. I ordered it medium. When it arrived, it was cooked well done- perhaps in an oven rather than seared. I say this because the skin was not crispy and the fat had not rendered, so the skin/fat remained thick, chewy and inedible. Usually the crispy skin is the best part of duck, so I was disappointed. I had to cut off the skin and thick layer of fat to make it edible. It tasted quite gamey and there was no pink center. It came sliced into thirds, so they knew it was overcooked when they served it to me. I only ate a small portion. The rest of my dish (which came out looking stunning by the way) was also a big disappointment. Although it looked beautiful at first glance, I discovered the delicata squash still had the rough, inedible skin attached. The cherry sauce was heavy-handed and drowned my brussel sprouts, sweet potato purée and carrots to the point that all I could taste was the sauce (a thick, sugary glaze). I did my best to eat around it, because my waitress didn't check on us until much later. In fact we were basically done by the time I saw her again. I had given up at that point and left most of my food behind. There was also an issue with where we were seated. We had a small table in front of a window, but completely blocking a much larger table in a narrow corner. There was a family there when we arrived, and each time they got up to use the bathroom, I had someone's body pressed against my chair to squeeze by. A woman's behind actually grazed the back of my head at one point. When the family left, I could feel them brushing my coat off the back of my chair, resulting in them stepping on it. I can't blame them- it was a tight spot and a very awkward place for a table. I was annoyed that the waitstaff (I'm assuming) took the other chairs at my table, making a 4 seat table into a 2 seater, so I had no choice in where to sit. I didn't understand why they did this, because there was a lovely fireplace nearby and I had my back to it all night. Clearly, they weren't thinking about the dining experience from the customer's point of view. Maybe I could have switched tables but finding my waitress was like trying to find Waldo all evening, so it wasn't worth the hassle. Safe to say I won't be back. If you decide to try it out, be sure to get there early as parking is a pain to find at peak dinner hours. read more

Went to shower service was terrible. They were told soda on table in pitchers, day of told no have to ask for it cause otherwise it's wasted. But they never came around to ask them for it. Needed more forks for dessert, asked they never came back went into kitchen and took them out of dishwasher our selves. Was 2nd in line for food and it was cold. No sternoes to keep food hot, ridiculous for what they charge. Acoustics in building is terrible you couldn't hear the bride or girls talking. My date and I were in no rush, so we put our drink order in and were waiting to put in our app order until we got our drinks, and we're waiting to put our dinner order until we got our appetizer. Our waitress was very sweet, but she was hovering and kept asking if we were ready to put our dinner order in. She then admitted that because it's a slow night, the kitchen might close early so that's why she wants us to get our food order in...it wasn't even 8 o'clock yet and they are open until 9. She was super sweet about it, and we put our order in and then when she came back with the apps she said another party walked in so the kitchen is going to stay open. It was just weird. The food was extremely average. Since the food is a bit on the pricier side, I was expecting it to have more flavor, but it was just okay. I got the short ribs and they were dry and had a lot of buttermilk fried onions that didn't add anything to the dish and just didn't taste good. My date ordered filet median rare and it came out more like medium well. I ordered the Bees Knees for my drink and it was very very strong and didn't taste good. We did order dessert to see if maybe at least that would be good, but unfortunately it was just okay. I got the lava cake but it was too sweet, artificial tasting and you could tell the ice cream was not local. For how much this restaurant charges, I would expect a lot more so unfortunately I would not recommend. I gave it 3 stars only because our waitress was very sweet and the music was good. read more

From the moment I arrived this building was just beautifully lit up outside in the evening. A gorgeous tree with lights stands in front of The Library Wine bar and bistro. As I walked into the main entrance lobby I was greeted by character all around. The place mirrored an old library with a relaxed atmosphere and dining areas of all kinds. We were lucky enough to be seated on an upstairs balcony that overlooked the bar with a beautiful chandelier. The balcony had tables and chairs, booths and little nooks with books and cushions making it so cozy. Our waitress was phenomenal and the food was some of the best! The burrata appetizer was so different yet so tasty. It was on a bed of apple jam with crumbled pistachios topped with candied bacon and served with crostini and sliced Granny Smiths. I never had anything like it and thought the pairing was perfect. The steaks were all cooked so tender and melted in your mouth. I also especially loved dessert. The pistachio lemon olive oil cake was light and refreshing and cured my sweet tooth. I thought the check arriving in a book was a clever way to receive the bill. Went on a little date night with my husband. We made a reservation and got seated right away. Unfortunately, the two of us were sat less than 2 feet away from a tabletop of at least 6 to 7 very enthusiastic girls who were very loud. We were greeted by our very pleasant waitress. She finally took our appetizer order, probably after waiting 30 minutes The appetizers came out by some other staff members. The tuna nachos are absolutely the best. The chips are light and crisp, and the tuna is always very fresh. I also ordered steak crostini, that came out in the steak was so overcooked. I couldn't even eat it. Very disappointing because the sauce was very delicious. Ordered a peach salad which she enjoyed. For dinner, I ordered shrimp and grits and my husband got a burger. He was very happy with the cook on the burger and very juicy. The shrimp and grits lacked flavor. The grits were clumpy and dry, and the shrimp were overcooked. I would not get those again. Thankfully, there was the red wine. By this time, we have been here an hour and a half already and waiting for the waitress for some more drinks which she never came back with, we asked her to remove them from our check. There was a good variety of brunch foods including your customized classic omelet station. I think the French toast and other carby foods were ok. I went to the library's Sunday brunch buffet with a friend. I read great things. It cost $35 plus the cost of drinks. Coffee or tea was included. It was very lovely and decorative for Christmas. We sat near a fireplace. Seems nice to go for a romantic branch or with a group of friends or family. There was a long table full of buffet platters. The first half was breakfast items and the second half was lunch items. Some of the items were scrambled eggs, potatoes, French toast, bacon, eggs Benedict, salmon, pasta, eggplant, some sort of beef. As a vegetarian, I wasn't sure. They have a dessert section with fresh fruit. Also an omelette station with a chef preparingomelettes. They had so many ingredient options of vegetables, different cheeses, and different meats, there was also a bagel section with things like cream cheese and smoked salmon and other options.. Overall, it was very lovely and I enjoyed my meal. I did get an omelette and it was delicious. I had some of the pasta and eggplant. However, I did not care for the eggplant. I did enjoy the fresh fruit. I would recommend coming here for brunch as it overall great experience. I've been attracted to The Library in Wallingford since I heard about it a few years ago. It has become a favorite spot to celebrate our wedding anniversary. There is a lot of rich history in building and the facade is very grand. When you walk into the foyer, it's warm and inviting as you meet the hostess to bring you to your table. We normally sit in the large dining room by the fire place. I love that the building has a lot of the original features still intact; high ceilings, crown molding and preserving the craftsmanship. There is a bar and an upstairs loft/dining area too. Our meals are always perfect and delicious. I do appreciate that they are able to make small adjustments to dishes to accommodate my food allergies. The starters are large enough to share between two people. We have tried the Pulpo (octopus) and Crispy Brussels Sprouts. If you are an adventurous eater, I highly recommend trying the Pulpo. It had a tasty grilled flavor, delicious piri piri sauce, and I love the addition of the olives. For the mains, I have tried the Scallops and the Cauliflower Steak. I love how all the dishes have a different flavor profile. The Scollops are the perfect autumn dish; roasted butternut squash, sweet potato puree, quinoa and apple salad, and the scallops melted in your mouth. The Cauliflower Steak--a whole head of cauliflower that is in a chickpea curry with jasmine rice and grilled eggplant. Love all the spices! My husband has been trying the steak options. He has had the New York Strip and Ribeye. They've been perfectly cooked to his liking and he had enjoyed. Most of the time we are too full for dessert, but we have tried a Chocolate Crème Brûlée like dessert with toasted marshmallow and a graham cracker cookie. The dessert is a big, shareable portion. It was rich, chocolaty, and smooth. The toasted marshmallow was my favorite part as the caramelized coating was amazing. The perfect bite was breaking up the cookie and getting a bit of marshmallow and chocolate all together. Tasted like a s'mores! The Library is a hopping place no matter the night. I highly recommend making reservations even if it's for a week day evening. Reservations are made easy online on their website through Open Table. This was my first time to the Library and it was pretty great. This establishment is nestled in the heart of Wallingford. I made my reservation through Open Table which I enjoy using. There's some history to this place. There's tons of parking around the area. Walking up to the library I had a nostalgic feeling that I was actually walking into an elegant old library. We were promptly greeted by a maitre d' who was able to adjust my reservation to accommodate two more people. "Very appreciative" ! The inside had a very rustic but elegant feel. The nastalgia never stopped. The service was prompt and attentive for our party of 6. We ordered cocktails with our apps to start and then switched over to a very delightful bottle of wine. I really enjoyed the steak crustini. That was probably my most notable part of the experience for me. The main courses were rather uneventful. I had a bananas foster for dessert which was yummy. Anywho, for 6 people, with drinks and apps, the bill came out to just around $500.00. So, service, ambiance, and bar array were great. The apps and dessert were also spot on. The flavor pairings can be improved upon a bit. Out of all the plates we had, the steak crustini had that wow flavor that popped. The grits under the short rib were bland at best. The risotto I had were undercooked, the proteins within that were tasty though. I'm gonna challenge the executive chef to put more "WOW" into his/her dishes. Met some co workers for happy hour at the bar and the bartender made me a killer paper plane.(classic drink) We had a variety of appetizers, the calamari was excellent and perfectly seasoned. There was live music - early too which was nice. My son has the friend oysters as an app. While they were yummy they were very spicy hot. I had a side of cheese grits. Having lived in the south for a bit I'm picky and these didn't disappoint. The side was generous, made for more than one person. My son had the pasta bolognese which he loved. I found it lacking flavor, personally. I had the salmon- an extremely generous portion over grilled eggplant with chick peas and sautéed tomatoes - absolutely so flavorful and filling. A dollop of pesto on top completed the order. For dessert we shared the peach bread pudding which was so delicious. Even the ice cream was excellent. Our waitress was great! My daughter brought my sister and I to The Library Wine Bar & Bistro today for Mother's Day Brunch!! This is a beautiful restaurant and event facility in the old Wallingford library. The brunch buffet was awesome!! The omelet station had everything you could want for an omelet. There was also a carving station with prime rib along with a buffet of eggs, bacon, sausage, savory potatoes, chicken tenders and waffles, tortellini, chicken francaise (which was delicious), Cajun salmon, salad, mixed veggies and I'm probably missing a ton of other items. To finish it off, there were mini desserts as well. I forgot to take pics of my plates as the food was delicious and I just dug in. But I did take pics of the brunch cocktails. We had the mimosa and sangria but the other cocktails looked good too. Our waitress Shay was also delightful and at the end, they bring your check in a book!! Thanks to the Pandemic, the professional organization I belong to hasn't had a live meeting since February 2020. But that all changed on Wednesday evening June 9th when we had a live meeting at the Library in Wallingford. We had a private room upstairs with our own bartender and everything went perfectly. Our buffet dinner choices included salad, bread, pasta, green beans, potatoes, chicken and fish entrees, and chocolate mousse. Our room looked great, the bartender and servers were super friendly and efficient, and most of all the food was hot and tasted great. If you have a bigger party, a reservation is wise. It did get pretty crowded the last time I was there. They started with a welcoming greeting and a long stem rose for us. Then a complimentary flute of champagne. Johnny, our server was excellent! We started with a shrimp cocktail. We split it and it was perfect. My wife picked the filet mignon. It was cooked as ordered, the mashed potatoes were to her liking and the roasted asparagus was a little thinner than a pencil (as it should be) and was excellent. I had the seared yellowfin special. It was seared to perfection. About 1mm all around and slightly cool in the center. It was one of the best pieces of sashimi grade fish I've ever been served. We finished with an outrageously good piece of peanut butter pie, a really well prepared Crème Brûlée, and a cap aching. Overall we were really impressed and glad to have taken the chance. I absolutely love this venue. Such a cool feel to it. We shared a Caesar salad that was good. I had the Lobster Pappardelle. The pasta was cooked perfectly and there was a nice helping of lobster mixed into a savory cheese cream sauce. read more

We had a reservation. We were sat immediately. Our server was very nice and knowledgeable about the menus . The food came quickly . We got the fried green tomatoes and truffle fries for appetizers.
