I really love this theatre. The prices for tickets and concessions are overall lower than a typical theatre. I purchased our tickets through eventbrite and it was an easy scan once we arrived. The theatre is clean and the renovations are beautiful. They have an upstairs balcony where you can take a seat or join the larger crowd on the lower level. Concession consist of popcorn, candies, fountain drinks and sparkling or still water. They typically play a variety of movies from throughout the years. Worth a visit! read more

Loved this theater! Super corny old movies are even better in a super old theater. The popcorn was super salty but they had a good selection of drinks and candy. Small town charm with an updated interior. I hadn't been to this theater in over a decade, and I had forgotten how nostalgic it is. It's actually the smallest, and also the cleanest theater I've ever been to. There's only one screen, and one concessions counter right as you walk in. Parking is free at the back in a lot accessible off of Finley Ave. I love that they kept the balcony seating. I really miss when theaters had that. Last night I attended the first day of the first year Newport Beach TV Fest presented by Newport Beach Film Festival. The night was all about Kate Hudson, her start, her films, her first role in a series, which she was being awarded for, and her other passions such as her beauty line Juice Beauty, and her new album just released last year. It was such a fun evening. She is funny, talented, and adorable with a wonderfully infectious laugh, just like her mother. It was a real delight just being in the same room as her. The rest of the week through Sunday will have several other different actors that will be speaking for a filmed podcast. You can purchase tickets online at www.nbtvfest.com. And if you get lucky, you can see and photograph them up close at the event display area where the press will be stationed before it begins for short interviews. I've been to the Lido Theater a few times now and I'm still in awe of its beauty. It has a stunning blend of classic and contemporary design and although recently renovated, the space retains its beautiful Art Deco charm, offering a nostalgic yet modern theater experience. While the balcony seats have a nice view, I recommend the main seating area because it provides excellent acoustics; the balcony seats have poor sound volume/quality. Also, I love the theater's bathrooms, which are exceptionally well-maintained and beautifully designed. There's an anteroom before you head into the lavatory and both rooms are absolutely lush!! Pastel tones, soft textures, classy retro style!! Overall, it's a wonderful spot to catch a show, with an atmosphere that strikes the perfect balance between old-school glamour and modern amenities. read more

Yeah I'm going to leave a 1 star just based on my short experience with the short guy that was standing in front of the entrance. Not sure what his job was or who he was, but I was with my daughter at the time taking a walk around the area and she wanted to see the newly remodeled lido theater which we were excited about. Walked up and said hello to the girl at the front and asked her if there was a movie playing, and the guy next to her interrupted the conversation and said the movie already started. Weird energy but I ignored it. My daughter then pointed inside the lobby and made a comment about how cool it looked, so I asked when the next showing was, and asked if my daughter could step in for a quick look to see the lobby, figured it wouldn't be an issue since we were 6 feet from the entrance. The guy then snickered and said "not without paying us first". At that point I just kinda looked at him in disbelief, and thought wow what an unnecessary reaction. So yeah, little guy had a power trip and it's all good. But hopefully this guy doesn't represent the energy inside the place or the new management. Bummer that was my daughter's first impression of a place she was excited about getting a remodel. Tip for management, maybe don't train a guy to charge a curious kid for a peep inside a lobby, it's bad for business. read more

To be honest, I haven't been to this location for ever. We used to live in the area and quite frequented the lido isle. The theater offers a free movie with any café purchase. I kept seeing it all summer and finally made the effort to come in. The lobby is a adorable café featuring pastries, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches I believe avocado toast, etc. plus coffee, beverages and popcorn. I opted for the raspberry muffin as well as an iced coffee, which quite honestly was delicious. Both items were. The theater still has that unique old-fashioned but elegant charm. There is street parking I don't know how much it cost offhand but there is a lot across the street run by LAX and quite honestly it's expensive in my opinion. The two ladies at the front who are in charge of the snacks/café and movies were super kind and helpful when I walked in. Every day they post the next movie after 2 PM pacific time on their Instagram page. You guys should really get over here and enjoy a movie. It runs on a loop. If you're gonna support local, you might as well support this since you're already buying coffee you might as well get a free movie too. read more

AMAZING! This is so gorgeous and Gaby who was working that day was soooo kind, interactive, welcoming, informative, and just a super awesome human being. She had the BEST energy and really made us feel so loved and welcome. It was like the best ever! We enjoyed our time and also took a lot of pictures. I will share my single shots as I haven't asked the others in my photos if I can share them online. :) However, this theatre is a true masterpiece and just wonderful. The restroom is gorgeous and it is like you stepped back in time during the glitz and glamour. Old Hollywood style. It is definitely wonderful and just breathtaking and truly fun! SO excited to see this place back open after 5 years of waiting! This theater is such a charm in Orange County, and one of the few historical locations that's been carefully preserved to still enjoy. My whole family loves the Lido Theater, and has for years. The theater looks much the same as I remember it, though freshly zhouzhed up! New carpeting and paint, while still keeping the classic elements it's always had. The new seats aren't exactly comfortable, but then it probably would've felt wrong to have reclining chairs in this 1939 building. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We were welcomed at the door and checked in expediently, and the concessions line was long but fast-moving. Now for my biggest con: the popcorn is one size only for $6 + tax. The box is the size of an at-home popcorn container, with no butter machines or topping options. As a huge popcorn fan who doesn't do any other snacks at the theater, this was definitely a disappointment. They were also serving soda and candy, though I'll say on a similar note, the soda cups were awfully small as well! Still, overall I'm enthusiastic to have the place open again! read more

Such a cool theater! Built in 1939 and it still looks gorgeous. They play movies during the day, and if you purchase something from their pop-up cafe, the movie is free! The staff is so friendly, too. They play kids movies sometimes (we saw Frozen and Turning Red here!), so this is a great option if you're trying to keep the kids busy this summer. We got a small bag of popcorn and a chocolate chip cookie for our kid, which was perfect. I love how they have interesting items for sale and not just the usual movie-theater concession items. Their customer service was the reason we stayed and tried the breakfast sandwiches which were surprisingly great. Dear Yelp Community, Visited for the very first time in recent days. I noticed a sign outside that this theater offers coffee from early morning until early afternoon, like a cafe. They only had drip coffee available, and an espresso machine is on the way. As for the baked goods, I really enjoyed the pumpkin bread. The staff are very friendly and took the time to explain that this theater is historic and was recently restored (so keeps to the original look and feel), as well as that they are developing the lobby area to serve as a coffee shop, of sorts, in the morning until early afternoon with access to the movie screen to view films complimentary. My favorite theater in the entire universe. Oh, so many memories. I think I saw La vie en rose three times during one summer. It was so much fun. I've seen Becoming Jane here and It's a Wonderful Life on Christmas. They're refreshed it a bit since then. The bathrooms are super nostalgic and the whole thing is so old and charming. I attended the 'Growing Up and Other Lies' film screening world premiere at the Lido Theater on April 26th, 2014 @ 8pm. This was my first time attending The Newport Beach Film Festival and this movie theater. This year's event was April 24-May 1, 2014 at various locations. Thanks to Yelp and Ryan C. for the post of this event and the tickets. I didn't know what to expect. The festival's website said cocktail attire but upon visiting the theater that afternoon, if I was only going to the show, then wear what I want to wear. However, attending the after party, then wear cocktail attire. Love the informative and very helpful staff! Dress warm and stand in line early. We stood there till 8pm and watched all these women in short dresses without stockings (I counted one single woman prepared w/ stockings) shaking from the sea breeze. The ticket booth brings you back to good old days. The ladies at the Will Call table next to it mentioned that John Wayne used to sleep it off in this theater. 'Howdy partner. I'm just grabbin' some shut eye.' As you enter the doors past the lone ticket booth, there is a single counter with a single register for snacks and drinks. Talk about giving personal attention to the customer; they take their jobs seriously and give you that TLC you will greatly appreciate. This is a single movie theater that plays one single movie on one screen. Seating is very comfortable but the leg room is tight. Inside the seating area, 2 large fans on the ceiling and marine life paintings on the walls. The screen is adorned by a red velvet curtained trimmed in gold satin/silk. The film was funny and so entertaining. I was really tired of the same old story lines and was so thankful to finally watch a movie with some insight and depth into life. I enjoyed the film and my experience. The staff was really friendly and so helpful. You can really tell they like working there because all of them have a smile...and not a tired/fake smile that is plastered on their face like other theaters. read more

The Lido is a wonderful venue. It is full of charm and nostalgia. According to their website: "The Lido Theatre was opened in 1938, and the first film it played was Bette Davis in "Jezebel". The reason for that was that Davis lived nearby in Corona Del Mar and traveled by the site daily. Upon stopping onsite, she told the owner "they had better open with my picture." And they did. Davis also is responsible for the sitting parlor in the ladies room that harkens back to a time when women sat and smoked and chatted while arranging makeup in the mirrors. There were supposed to be a Men and Women's room downstairs, but Davis insisted on the sitting parlor for the ladies, and so the men's room was relocated upstairs. " I have visited this theatre many times, and each time I visit the restroom, I think of this Bette Davis story - they still have the lobby card for Jezebel hanging in the ladies room parlour. The theatre has a balcony, and we love to sit there. It reminds me of seeing movies as a kid. We enjoy seeing family films here, or just going as a couple. They only show one film at a time, so check their website to see when they change. Inside the theatre itself the walls are painted with sea life in flourescents that glow in the dark under a black light. There is very much a feeling of stepping into the past. Sometimes, during big event movies, the manager will speak to the audience before the film begins. He shares trivia, and announces "Enjoy the Show" as the curtain rises. There is clapping, and enthusiasm from patrons. The theatre focuses on service, and patrons are often greeted, and acknowledged by staff. The entire theatre was restored, and has a wonderful sound system. It is not a beat up old movie house. In fact - The Lido is only a block from the ocean, and houses independent surfing and skateboarding films. It is the Surf Film capitol of southern CA. Every April, they participate in the Newport Beach Film Festival. My favorite movie so far was "It's a Wonderful Life" - screened yearly at Christmas. I love seeing the film in a cinema that would have originally screened it. It is a wonderful tradition to have during the holidays with your family. My 2 grown children and I all cried, it was so moving in this setting. There is a faithful following of moviegoers. I like it that you buy your tickets out front, under a grand marquee that lights up at night in a majestic way. The theatre itself is a part of your experience...not just the film. read more

Lido Theater has some serious charm. It's old school and has just one screen. Went to see the Hunger Games on opening night and the lines were nothing like you'd find at some of the larger theaters. As a matter of fact, we were second or third in line and we didn't get there until about 45 minutes before the movie! The theater ended up only being half full, so definitely didn't need to wait at all. There's an upper balcony you can sit on, which is a lot of fun and seems to be where the majority sit. The one downside to this theater (and why we won't come here regularly) is because the seats are rather uncomfortable. Okay, REALLY uncomfortable. Definitely not a bad spot to see a movie if you're near the peninsula, but there are better options elsewhere. read more

I can't give a place like this less than 5 stars. Although, there is one problem, the seats. They don't recline and, for me, they are almost a little too upright. Wish they could somehow fix it. Truly like stepping back in time here. But, with good picture and sound. Sitting in the balcony seats really take you back in time. On weekends, noted announcer and restaurant critic, Jim Woodin, introduces the shows with tidbits and trivia. The Lido has a waterfall red velvet curtain that rises with each show, and no pre-show advertisements are allowed by the owners. I saw Doubt here and they were recently showing Milk. So, some mainstream stuff. They don't seem to have any set schedule for changing what's playing and may extend showings at any giving time. Beautiful full-sized screen, black lights on the ceiling illuminating giant fish painted on the walls, dill pickles for sale at the concession stand, balcony seating, and a suit-clad man holding out a silver mint-filled tray at the exit as you leave. Free parking in back of the theater. Matinee prices for all movies starting before 5:15. Discounts for students with i.d.s. The first thing that struck me is how retro this theater was without being in disrepair. It looked nice but like I stepped into my grandma's era. After we loaded up our arms with popcorn and sodas, we headed into the theater. And it was pitch black. Be ready with the flashlight function on your phone bc it was so dark you couldn't see a single seat or anyone in them. You could use the help.
