Tip Extortion Been…read moregoing there occasionally for 5 years. Service was hit and miss. Some staff friendly, some merely aloof, some seemingly hostile. Never could figure it out. Gave them the benefit of the doubt. I always support independent shops when possible. Friends don't let friends go to Starbucks... A few days ago it became clear. I ordered a bagel and requested it be toasted enough not to be raw inside. About half the time that's what I got. I paid and saw they wanted a tip upfront. I feel asking for a tip before earning it is unethical. So I selected no tip. I would gladly leave a dollar after. One of the staff, let's call him "Chris", toasted my bagel and delivered it to me burnt. No overdone. Burnt. As in mostly black. I said it was burnt. He replied that I requested it "double toasted". I looked at him like he was speaking in Swahili. I explained that I merely wanted it toasted and not raw inside. He insisted that I ordered it that way. He did not take my order. I said she wrote it but I did not say it. He insisted that I, the customer, was somehow so stupid as to not know how to order a bagel. I said "would you eat this"? Amazingly, he said with a straight face "yes". I replied that he could eat it but I want what I ordered. At this point "Chris" leaned over and told me I should be nice. Nice? Nice! I was flabbergasted. I was being scolded by kid a third my age. I was stunned. Was this a joke? Yes, but he was serious. It was an absolutely stunning display of passive-aggressive behavior. Delivered with a condescending smirk and self-righteousness. I replied that I am not nice and so what. He then insisted that I be nice. I said I am from the Midwest and we tend to be direct. It's not rude. It's the way we communicate. Honestly without hedging. This sailed right over his head unacknowledged, Then the truth. You didn't leave a tip he said. How did he know I didn't tip on the little checkout screen? I tried to explain my view on tipping that it needs to be earned. "Chris" was adamant that they expect tips as they are not paid much and work "hard". I reiterated my view and called tipping up front unearned and possibly undeserved as like Socialism. "Chris" did not like that and said that "people of my generation (Boomers are Bad!) don't get it." He further lectured me on how underpaid they were and that the "need" and thus "deserve" tips regardless of what service they offer. He then declared that a dollar tip was entirely insufficient. I replied that $1 on a $4 bagel was a 25% tip. He repeated that it was too little regardless. I said then how much is fair. He did not answer. My guess is that he knew as much about the mathematics of percentages as he knows about Swahili dialects. I offered that if they were to ask for tips after, the honorable way, they would earn more. People are motivated above all by fairness and would hedge on tips not knowing if they would be earned. "Chris" gave me the obligatory hourly-wage employee response that "that's the way it is"... The self-declared creatives have the ingenuity of cows munching grass. Then a kid decided to be a hero and intervened saying "WE don't have a problem with the tipping". In a stunning display of sociotropic behavior, he elected himself to defend the shop and represent all other patrons. I ran out of patience and told him to STFU. At this point the heroine server, who decided I like burnt bagels, told me to leave. So I did leave. I regret every penny I spent there to support their shop. So now I know why even as I liked the layout of the place, and all their countless little books promoting a myriad of pretentious woke socialist utopia topics, I never felt comfortable there. The all-inclusive did not like me invading their "Safe Space". Instead of just telling me "hey, this is our space not yours Boomer Boy" they instead were a case study in passive aggressiveness. A coward's way to feel all smug and self-righteous. Since they present themselves as fans of "literature" here is a literary quote (Kurt Vonnegut Jr. in Slaughterhouse Five... said to the character Billy Pilgrim in a hospital upon his return from being a prisoner of war in Dresden, Germany... "I can carve a better man out of a banana" So I see that they have high ratings from their intended audience and I am a mere interloper. My little One star rating will not be noticed. They are all very clean, different, interesting and have the most comfortable beds anywhere! The service is the best anywhere..... friendly, helpful and efficient. Kenzie has been my touchstone for the last few years as i'm there every few months. If you need anything fixed in the room, ideas for meals or activities, she is your girl! However, my new best friends there are Haley, Danielle, and, as always, Ed (my fixer when i lock myself out of the room). I travel quite a bit and there are fancier, more luxurious hotels ( not in Fort Collins) BUT this is a very reasonably priced hotel with charm, lovely rooms and great beds ( so important!) and the wonderful service! Insider tip... book directly through the hotel's front desk for a better price!

One word of caution, though. Not to put you off visiting, but just a heads up: Larimer County only allows the winery to have 11 vehicles in their parking lot. A wine tasting reservation does secure you a spot. Long version - we were visiting Loveland, CO (from Phoenix, AZ) for a very short trip & wanted to cram in as much as we possibly could. Blendings was one of the first wineries we found doing a Google search for the area. What a fantastic place, no joke. We made the reservation online, and not gonna lie, I got nervous about the 11-car limit. I sent an e-mail to a couple of their "Contact Us" addresses. One did not go through. When I reached out to them via Facebook, someone replied almost immediately, thanking me for letting them know about the bad e-mail & also confirming that yes, a tasting reservation guarantees your car has a spot in their parking lot. Now that is excellent customer service. When we arrived this particular Thursday for our 4 o'clock reservation, it was to a gorgeous spot. Green vineyards, a babbling brook, a gorgeous & well decorated eating / tasting area, a beautiful patio for more tasting ambiance, plus a couple more covered areas in their small side yard. Katie welcomed us with a cheery hello & bright smile. She was very friendly as we navigated through our confusion over the reservation. She was giving us a 4-flight tasting when we reserved the Blendings Experience (6 flights, charcuterie plate, bottle to take home) ... or so we thought. Turns out, we weren't paying attention to their website when we signed up & clicked on the other link, the one for the 4-flight tasting. She was super sweet though & said the Blendings master could be there in 30 min if we wanted to go that route. Not wanting to rush anyone because of our screw up -- and because we were thirsty now! :-) -- we opted to go w/ the normal tasting. What a treat that was. Probably a good thing, too, because the flights were generous pours; I don't think I could have handled 2 more pours. LOL! With all the wine consumption, we ordered a veggie plate, as well as a charcuterie plate. Plus, Katie gave us some spicy saltines to go with it. Tasty! The hummus w/ the veggies had a little kick to it, & the small pita pockets were perfect. The charcuterie plate had some wonderful cheese slices, a nice selection of olives (you could choose to go w/ nuts instead of olives), plus the meat & crackers. It was so good we ordered a 2nd charcuterie. There was an excellent selection of wines to choose from the tasting menu. One or two I wanted they were out of, but we were also able to substitute from their other selections. They also had a couple special seasonal wines, as well as some cocktails, on top of a few frozen wine slushie concoctions. Too many choices. We totally should have taken an Uber/Lyft. Ha Ha! We got through our flights, then tried a few of their cocktails: Old Fashioned, Lavender Lemonade, and one of their frozen. Every single one was delicious. All in all, we spent a couple hours at Blendings. We could have spent so much longer, but then we totally would have needed a ride home. We bought a few bottles of their sweet wines: Strawberry Blonde, Caramel Apple, and Blue Me Away. It was a hard decision to make, which bottles to buy. If you are ever in the Fort Collins or Loveland area and want to have a fantastic wine-tasting experience, you should reserve a tasting at Blendings Winery. You'll have a memorable experience.

He also told one of my girlfriends that she doesn't know wine and that she is a "condescending bitch", because she was engaged in a conversation with him about his wines. I invited William to sit at our table with us early on (which he did) and when he switched to the drunk monster that he truly is, I saw it in his eyes. It is VERY obvious that this individual has LOTS of issues he needs to work through and is currently using alcohol as a coping mechanism, while also verbally assaulting his female customers. Unfortunately, we were the only 3 people in the tasting room and had we had a male with us, we surely would not have had the same experience. I immediately began to shut down (trauma response) and tears began streaming down my face. Normally with this type of male (gaslighting, condescending, and toxic to the nth degree), I would have been overly confrontational but the things he said and the look in his eyes, I knew that it was in my best physical health to not fully engage. I looked at him right before we left and said "I want you to know that this feeling, the tears I can't control, are real and you alone caused this". He then made fun of me for my tears and told us to leave as we were trying to pay. We obviously left and were and still are in complete shock. This individual needs to not only seek mental and substance use help but also should not be running a winery. Do NOT go to Ten Bears, especially if you are alone, are a group of women, and/or care about the safety of women. Ladies, go to Sweetheart Winery in Loveland, never had an issue there.

How was I going to help her plan a wedding that was not in her hometown in Connecticut? We definitely needed a planner to help. We interviewed several planners and my daughter and now son-in-law felt that Casey was the only one we interviewed that spent the time to get to know them and find out what they wanted in their vision of a wedding verses just telling them all the services they provide. Casey was asking how they met, what they liked to do in their free time and what was the vibe they were going for with the wedding. I felt confident that Casey would help them plan a wedding that was perfect for THEM. I wanted to be included in the planning process and Casey had no problem with this so I would be conferenced in on any calls and looped in on all the emails. Casey was very patient throughout the planning process from the number of site visits she went on to find the perfect venue to answering all the little questions we had. Casey helped us find the perfect venue that fit all the characteristics the B+G explained to her in the initial interview. At first, we signed up for "day of" planning because of expense but added the "full service" planning when we decided the venue we chose would end up being like a destination wedding where no guest lived locally so the whole weekend needed to be planned from Friday through Sunday. I am so glad we did this because Casey stepped right in and helped us with all the details! Casey is very organized and helped keep the B+G on schedule with their tasks so it never seemed overwhelming throughout the whole planning process. She recommended some great vendors! Casey went through each contract to make sure all contracts were good even before forwarding them to me to review and kept me on schedule with payments needed for all vendors so I never missed a payment. Casey was great with communication and would often answer an email on her day off even though I didn't expect an answer right away. I think Casey really excelled with logistics and design so when the time came, the wedding was flawless! All of our guests commented on how well everything came together and how beautiful the wedding was. The weekend of the wedding was amazing, the B+G and I showed up and were allowed to be just guests for the whole weekend! We did not need to worry about a thing because Casey and Jessica handled everything! It turned out better than I could have imagined! I did not find out about a problem that happened during the weekend until after the brunch when my sister let me know that she was having such trouble with the altitude right before the ceremony that Casey got her some oxygen and set her up in a place to see the ceremony where she did not have to walk. I did not even notice that this was going on. There was no doubt that Casey did not want the B+G nor me to be troubled with anything over the weekend and what a joy that was to not have that stress! When first interviewing planners I thought they were, as a whole, expensive and was a little worried with the cost of them, however, I can honestly say Casey and Aspen & Ivy are well worth the expense! Casey, I really enjoyed working with you. I felt that through the process you became more of a friend than vendor we had contracted! We definitely could not have pulled off such a beautiful event without you!

She gently advised us on everything including, caterers, food, alcohol, flowers, and invitations. During the weekend Casey worked behind the scenes to make sure everything ran perfectly. We were particularly impressed when she was the last one to bed because she was running the vacuum at night to make sure the space was in perfect order for Saturday breakfast. This is the very first time we've ever used a party planner and we are so glad we did. Three months later our friends are still raving about the weekend and how well organized it was. It did help that we had the party at Estes Park on a glorious fall weekend. Casey didn't plan that. We had to recruit friends and family to help clean up the previous client's mess - not how we planned to spend the morning of our wedding! After expressing our disappointment to management, we were ridiculed for the delivery of our feedback and reimbursed the absolute minimum amount we said we'd accept for our time and trouble on the day of our event. (We had paid top dollar, too. We've been in contact with other customers who'd been charged significantly less.) We cannot recommend Block One until their policy and procedure around cleaning changes. Our guests were as disappointed as we were. Local friends said explicitly that they would not do business with Block One having witnessed our experience. It's really too bad - like I said, it's a beautiful venue!
