She suggested this place said, it was a nice vibe and the food was really good. She was absolutely correct! This business is beautifully decorated. The staff is friendly and efficient. The customers were grown, sexy and engaging. A place where the boys can hang out together or when they feel like bringing a woman they can do that too or us girls. Just as long as you are grown no foolishness here. It's a great vibe, that kind of place! My cousin had the chicken and waffles. I didn't taste that chicken, but it smelled absolutely delicious and she loved it. And baby, those dry rub wings are the thing to get! Lions Den has a cool vibe, but don't go expecting great service, at least not during happy hour. The place has a strong cigar scent, which adds to the lounge atmosphere, but the service was frustrating. Our server was impossible to track down, barely checked on tables, and kept putting orders on the wrong ones. We had to chase her down just to get drinks, and even then, they weren't as good as they could have been since she was also bartending and clearly overwhelmed. Other tables seemed to get better service, so maybe it's hit or miss. The drinks were decent but nothing to rave about. The real highlight was the food. We ordered one of everything on the happy hour menu, and not a single complaint. Everything was flavorful, well-prepared, and worth ordering. My personal favorite was the NOLA egg rolls--absolutely delicious. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The crowd was fun and lively, but the music felt way too old-school for my taste. Early 90s and older, which gave off more of a retirement party vibe than a modern lounge feel. When they have live bands, though, the energy is much better. Overall, it's worth checking out, but if you actually want decent service, sit at the bar. read more

We chose outside because they were having an event that day and it was very packed inside. Attention, Northsiders. If you think you have to go outside of your neighborhood to get a great meal, you're mistaken. There is now great food in Northside, thanks to The Lion's Den. I stopped in at The Lion's Den for lunch and was pleasantly greeted by Desiree, who presented me with the drink and food menus. I asked for a prosecco. They didn't have any, but without missing a beat, she offered me an alternative (the name I can't remember). She allowed me first to taste it to see if it was to my liking since I mentioned that I preferred a dry sparkling wine. And it was. Bonus points for Desiree! I ordered the crab cakes with rice and sauteed vegetables, which were broccolini and green beans. I thought that was a strange combination, but when they came out, to my delight, they paired very well together, were perfectly cooked al dente, and seasoned very well. The crab cakes are ALL CRAB! No filler. Perfectly seasoned and topped with remoulade. The rice was light and fluffy. It is a simple meal--elegant in its simplicity, plated well and done right. Perfect portion size. Kudos to the chef, Jose! Right on cue, Desiree suggested a dessert (again I can't remember what she called it), which she described with enthusiasm, so how could I refuse? She presented the prettiest little personal bundt cake (warm) with ice cream, drizzle and strawberries. It was as good as she promised. I really have nothing bad to say about my visit. Desiree anticipated my every need before I could even ask and gave me excellent service throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch to the backdrop of old school R&B playing in the background and a richly designed decor (check out the gold velvet fabric on the sofa). Things to note: (1) this is an intimate space, so if you want to enjoy a meal at peak time, you definitely want to make a reservation, and (2) this IS a cigar lounge. So, if you're not into cigars or smoke, then you can still come and enjoy your meal on the patio. I'm not into cigars OR smoke, but when I was there for lunch, didn't really have to contend with either even though I sat inside. They must have an amazing air purification system. Since I don't do cigars, I didn't really check out the other spaces for the cigar connoisseurs--a walk-in humidour with lockers and small private lounge area for members. (3) I was in for lunch. I understand the vibe is much livelier at night and on weekends, as they often have live entertainment. There is plenty of parking in their lot and off-street, and I understand they often have live music on weekends. Go and enjoy Northside's newest hot spot! The food is great and the band is top notch. I had the salmon Alfredo pasta and wings. Service was decent. They were very busy and the staff was being pulled in multiple directions, but they were attentive. If you have even the slightest concern with smoking you may want to rethink this. I read a lot of reviews beforehand and thought there were areas that you could get away from the smoking. That's partially true. There is an outdoor area, but it keeps you from hearing the live band inside the restaurant. Also, it's only good if no one around you is smoking. As soon as someone else comes out with cigars, etc. it's over lol. I would highly recommend making a reservation to ensure you can sit inside to hear the band, if that is your preference. read more

First of all, let me say that I think The Lion's Den is better than 1 Star, but I gave it one because I wanted people to click on this and read it. I'm not a connoisseur of cocktails so, when I'm drinking a mixed drink; I usually order house or rail liquor. Based on my experience at many places in Richmond, I don't expect to pay more than $8.00 a shot for rail liquor. I ordered a house vodka and tonic and was surprised to receive a check with Tito's at &10.00 a shot. The owner spoke with me about it and said that Tito's is their house vodka. He also emphasized that "they are not like most places". Basically, with a very dismissive tone. If that is the case, I would suggest that when someone asks for house liquor, they just say that they only have premium brands and share the cost. One other issue I encountered: I ordered a double and requested a tall glass. I had had a couple of singles already and they were served in a short cocktail glass which was fine. Asking for a tall glass meant that I wanted a glass that held more than the short glass. I didn't think that I needed to point that out to anyone. What did I get? A tall, skinny glass that held the same quantity as the short glass. And I doubt that I was served a double at all. Hopefully this feedback will help the Lion's Den better set customer's expectations in the future. I may be the first customer that provided feedback like this. But just think of how many customers felt this way, but didn't say anything and just decided not to come back. Best wishes to you. read more

So... myself and about 3 other people went here last night after a concert. It was around 9pm and a Sunday, but we checked to make sure the establishment was still open. The hours on the website stated they close at midnight on Sundays. We arrived and the doors were locked but there were people inside. We thought it was a security measure so we knocked...and knocked..and another gentleman arrived ..and he knocked..finally someome came to the door and said they were closed "cuz Sundays are light." I look down at the hours posted and sure ensure it just wasnt an oversight on my part...nope, posted hour was midnight. Mind you while all of this is happening, people are arriving via uber and we are having to inform people not to let their uber leave (the area is not well lit) while the gentleman who answered the door went backbto check to see if they were really closed. He came back and said they had shut everything down, sorry. If you're pressed to go here, call ahead. My advice, skip it and go to Mona's. read more

I'll start with the good: We drove down from the DC area. Upon entering, it is a nice looking black owned cigar establishment. We were greeted promptly and seated quickly. He purchased cigars, food and drinks. The wings and Bombay shrimp were good in flavor... there is a but coming. The Moscow mules were mediocre. The bad: We sat for a long while, to the point, he had to go seek out the hostess to see if we could be serviced. When the young lady finally came, the first thing she said was, Do you have a card to put on file? Im like, well Hello! Lol We ordered our food and drinks. The shrimp came with a very long piece of blonde hair in them. And the wings were fried very hard. We had to seek someone to AGAIN, to get a new order shrimp. The hostess informed our waitress and I watched her continue talking to a bartender instead of coming to see about us. She apologized and took them away. When she brought the shrimp back, which was fairly quickly AND on the SAME plate, made me wonder if they actually made them over. After finishing our food and finally trying to get into the cigars she came and asked if we were ordering anything else because there's a 2hr. limit on the tables. Never mind some of our time was wasted on waiting on her AND waiting on the return of our hairy shrimp. Not to mention, there were customers sitting at the bar when we arrived, still there when we left. We frequent cigar lounges VERY often. And, We did have high expectations for this lounge but they were not met at all. We were disappointed. We did not feel welcomed or satisfied with the level of service we received. We spoke to Brian, which offered no solution. We will NOT be back. read more

Over the last 10 years, I have visited 70+ cigar lounges across the US and other countries around the world. The Lion's Den Cigar Lounge rates in top 10 cigar lounges I have visited. Although this was my first visit to the Lion's Den, Brian (General Manager) and Tony (Manager, Cigar Sommelier/Catador) made it a point to stop by and speak to me, shake my hand, and make me feel welcomed. This excellent customer service was also evident in the wait-staff, who ensured my visit was pleasurable. There is a good selection of cigars in the walk-in humidor. The food and beverage selection are equally good. I had such a pleasurable experience, I returned later in the evening with three other people so that they could enjoy the same experience. My thanks to Brian, Tony, and the entire staff. I will be back the next time I visit Richmond. read more
