Banned from Buying After Their Own Product Broke in 18 Days Bought a sewing machine for my elderly mom--when it broke after 18 days, the manager refused to help and told us to shop elsewhere. It'll be a very long time before I ever set foot in another Michael's--especially the one in Glendale, CA. Let's face it: good customer service is rare these days. I read plenty of negative reviews about this store's self-checkout mess and lack of help before writing this. My main issue, though, is poor management. I recently bought a sewing machine for my elderly mother, a lifelong seamstress who just needed a reliable, basic model. The sewing section was literally a wall of product cards--no demos, no displays, and no one available to explain anything. You grab a ticket and bring it to the register, but a ticket doesn't mean it's in stock. Behind the self-checkout counter sat a random stack of damaged boxes. The kind attendant confirmed our chosen model was out of stock, so we settled for a smaller Singer and took it home. It turned out to be tiny--almost toy-like. So we returned it (receipt in hand) to exchange for a larger, pricier one. Enter "Manager" Nagila. She curtly told me that Michael's "does not allow sewing machine returns if you simply don't like it." She called it "store policy" but couldn't explain why. Whether that rule truly exists or not, her attitude was cold and dismissive. I explained we weren't returning it out of preference--we just wanted to upgrade to a better, more expensive machine. Only then did she reluctantly process the return, warning she'd "allow it this one time" but "not again." It felt less like customer service and more like being scolded for trying to do business there. Fast-forward 18 days: my mom's mid-project when the new machine fails completely--error codes C4 (bobbin issue) and E6 (motor failure). We went back, receipt in hand. Nagila immediately refused to help, wouldn't even inspect the machine, and told us to "just go somewhere else." She processed a refund and said we were no longer allowed to purchase sewing machines at that store. When I asked her name, she mumbled it under her mask and snapped, "I don't have to give you my name!" before storming off. One of the regular employees--the same kind woman who helped us before--apologized and admitted her manager was in the wrong. Michael's Corporate: This is how you lose loyal customers. You are unlikely to find a more disorganized store. I ordered a very small item on their app. The item was fine. Finding it among the other app orders was a disaster. I asked the lady behind the counter how to get my app order. She said just come back here and find your name and take your order. That sounds great until you realize that NOTHING is in alphabetical order. My last name starts with an "S." There were literally four different spots across a long shelf that had "S." Next to S was C which was next to N etc. Each letter of the alphabet was in many different locations. Now I realize why Michael's stores are almost empty when you go in. If the app orders are that disorganized, I can just imagine the stock on the shelves in the rest of the store. read more

They killed Joanne's for THIS?! Michael's is a pathetic excuse for a craft store. THE SHELVES ARE BARE! Not just for Halloween, literally all the time. There's barely any staff and the folks that are working there are overworked and underpaid. Also the prices?! Give me a break. Michael's used to be my go-to place for frames-- now they charge $29.99 for PLASTIC FRAMES! The only reason I went here was because they killed Joanne's and I'm not morally bankrupt enough to shop at Hobby Lobby. But now that they're raising prices while lowering both quality and quantity... Michael baby, there's real craft stores out there. I'll be going to one of them. I found my supplies but the canvas is on the top shelf and shorter people wouldn't be able to reach it. They should put the canvas on the bottom. Worst customer service, Store is a mess and the manager is just sitting down on one of the isles doing something with the markers instead of managing the store. When you have 15-20 people in line and the cashier Marjorie is trying to manage the best she could with no help. Leonardo who came to assist Marjorie was also amazing! Service in this store was poor. We were forced to use the self checkout because the cashier refused to scan or check out our items.

I just left and I asked 3 different people for an item to see where it was. None of them pointed me in the correct direction. I was told to ask the manager and she straight up said they don't carry it. But they have it in stock according to their online store so that was very disappointing. I think it's better to say you don't know what the product is and ask for a picture or something. read more

So I'm in the store today and I've grabbed a few spools of holiday ribbon at a good price (buy 1, get 3 free). On the way out I see a 50% off table of holiday items. I spot a pretty candle and grab it and head to checkout. I already know it's going to be an ordeal because there's no price so I can't go through self checkout. Finally I get to an available cashier and tell her hey I got this on that table right there pointing, but there's no price on it. There's another one but it has no price either. (It was in worse condition, no bottom on it) She calls someone and says, she only wants one. I tell her wait, it's on the 50% off table because someone has broken up what I didn't even know was a set. Someone brings a box up and she tells me the candle is $6.50. I'm like ok I'll take it but just out of curiosity how much is the set and what does it include? 3 candles and a remote, $19.95. The stupid it burns. read more

When placing my order, Maritza showed me the options, and provided me the guidance I was looking for, from frame color and style to the matting options. Alan put it together so nicely. This place deserves no stars. I had "three returns", but I also picked up some beads for my small business. When I got to the cash register, the sales lady started on the "three returns." Once a line started forming behind me, she began shouting at the customers standing in line to use the self checkout option because I had "three returns." I asked her if she could say that louder. The elderly woman behind me had fabric, and wasn't sure if she could use the self checkout option. The sales lady shouted "you're going to have to use the self checkout option because she (points at me) has three returns!" I again shouted at her "Could you say that louder? You're going to have even more returns from other customers once Christmas ends, so you should start getting used to it!" Her voice carries, and I felt like she was putting me on the spot for having "three returns." The elderly woman was not comfortable about using the self checkout option, and she was shouting at the cashier lady "It's the customer's choice if they want to be helped by the cashier!" Another elderly woman asked for help with the Christmas trees. The cashier said "I can't help you. She (pointing at me) has three returns! All the trees are right there in the middle. If it's not there, we don't have it." I also tried to purchase beads for my small business. The cashier asked another employee for assistance with the tax exemption form. The two were having a conversation about the employee experiencing some sort of eye trouble, and how she should go to Doheny Eye Center for that. All of this while I'm waiting for assistance! I called asking if something was in stock and some girl answered and sounded immediately annoyed. Then she asked me to hold and I was on hold for 11 minutes and then was HUNG UP ON!!! Like other Yelpers, my wife and I, too, have spent wayyy too much money at Michaels. So, yes it hurts to write this review. But honestly, this location sucks and needs lots and lots and LOTS of training for their staff and operational improvements. I've placed multiple orders for curbside pickup the past few months and never once have they brought my order out to me curbside. Oh, and forget getting your order on the same day. Your curbside order will take multiple days before you can pick it up, even if it's one item. Whenever I arrive, I park in a curbside pickup spot, mark myself as arrived in the app, and then I sit and wait and wait and wait and never get helped. Eventually, like 25+ minutes later (apparently I haven't learned my lesson), I'd get tired of waiting and go into the store only to find that apparently no employees handle online/curbside pickups. It's as if the entire employee staff has no clue that they take online orders or curbside pickup is something they offer. I know it's specifically the Glendale location that has issues, because the Pasadena location runs like a well oiled machine. Anyway, today at the Glendale location, I again was not helped curbside. When I gave up on waiting and went into the store, I saw that they finally put an online order button by the front door that makes an obnoxious sound when pressed, to presumably let employees know they've let down yet another curbside pickup customer...? I think that's considered progress. Still, it seems hit or miss if any employees respond to the obnoxious button when you press it. It's like all the workers have challenged each other to ignore pickup customers. Final note: the employees themselves seem very nice. I think the problem is with management (or lack thereof). If you read other reviews, this location has clear issues. It's pretty telling that I tried to send this feedback directly to Michaels and couldn't find any way to do so through their website. To the managers/owners: try doing a mystery shop on your own store. Place an order as if you were a customer and choose curbside pickup and wait in your car for your order. Try experiencing what your customers experience. You'll learn a lot. read more

12/19/23: A bit sad honestly. We were told you can buy gift cards at the self checkout by an employee. Another one later comes by and says you have to see someone at a register. We go to the register and that person tells us its company policy that you can only use cash to buy gift cards.... So we took them to the self checkout. Entered it in and bought it with a credit card.... Seriously.. if you don't know how to do something, say so! Instead they tell us things that makes no sense whatsoever because they are either lazy, incompetent, or both. It is not even about being trained properly. It's about owning your sh$t. Not sure if the workers here are all new or just lazy but compared to the Pasadena Michael's this location just blows. Not sure why it's so hard to get help in this store. Good luck when you need something opened or just about any assistance because it'll take over 100 yrs until they actually come and help you. I tried to price match an item from Joanna and lady at the counter also told me they don't price match (this is the first time I've ever heard this) but she was either just being lazy or didn't know store policies. On the website they actually tell you they do price match and can even beat it by 10%. I suggest skipping this location and taking your business to the Pasadena store. Took his time, but was also incredibly attentive to others as they walked up and needed help. He was polite and we found frames that were far less expensive than what I'd pay at a framing store. I was there today and I have to warn all shoppers. Michael's senior staff and owners have decided it's somehow a great idea to fire all their staff and replace them with fully automated machines at this facility. So unless you have cash on hand to pay for your art supplies, you must do all your shopping alone. Little to no personal help from any staff member. The few members they have left are always busy just cleaning and restocking. This means even if you have 100 items you must scan each item, load each item, as the computer monitors your every move and a video camera records your face. So let me be clear: the new policy is SELF-CHECKOUT ONLY unless you are paying cash. Not only is this a violation of personal privacy, but if someone has to go through all this humiliation why wouldn't they just shop online? I will begging to Blick's art supply from now on or anyone else that avoid 100% automation. Horrible customer service here after ringing for assistance in the spray paint section for 10 minutes and nobody came. I had to go to the front to ask for assistance. Then I had to go back to the spray paint section wait an additional 10 minutes. Finally I go to the register to pay and was told by the girl that sent me back to the spray paint section that I wasn't able to pay with card because I was purchasing spray paint. All the time I'm waiting the girl was waiving everyone ahead of me instead of helping me checkout. I was late getting back to work because of all of this. Had an unbelievably bad experience at this store... picked up a set of 12 small candles and stood in line to pay for them.. the line took 20 minutes and the store was Definitely not busy... there was only one cashier, with over 10 people in line! the rest of the employees were nonchalantly arranging things in the isles. Even after someone called for help at the registers...it took another 7 minutes for an employee to casually walk over and help. When my turn finally came.. at the register I was told the little cardboard box that the 12 candles were in, was not included. I was confused as i was buying a set of 12 candles that were in the box that fit them all perfectly... they made a huge deal out of it and refused to include the CARDBOARD BOX. It was not some fancy box... it was the small cardboard box the candles came in!! Completely mind blown... I'm never going back to this store. I spoke to the manager named Norka... and she insisted that the cardboard box is not included as if it was something extra I was asking for. She seemed wound up and frustrated even at the very beginning of the conversation, worst energy. What is this??? Why is this happening at this store? Been coming to this place with my kids for many years now. Definitely the place to go for craft projects. The prices are reasonable, and even better with all the daily coupons I get via email. When it's time for your child to do the mission project (elementary school), I would recommend coming here the day your child finds out about the project. You have more choices to choose from. So many neat things to find here to add to the mission project to make it look so realistic: grass, rocks, bells, priests, paint, roofing, plants....... We really enjoy looking for stuff to add to a DIY card. I've seen my kids make REALLY fantastic looking cards for Mother's Day and birthdays for their relatives. If you have Girl Scouts doing their Gold Award and they need stuff in order to accomplish this award, I highly recommend coming here. The stuff you need to make friendship bracelets or activity kits all come at a reasonable price with so many colors and designs to choose from. See you in the aisles!! read more
