Now that I have visited The Loaf on a few occasions, it's time to write a much-deserved stellar review. This Japanese-inspired bakery offers SCV visitors some incredible, one-of-a-kind beverages, breads and pastries that are out of this world! Simple concept: deliver quality, homemade offerings that are fresh, free of additives and preservatives and are downright delicious. On the most recent visit, my girlfriend and I enjoyed some speciality matcha iced beverages, including the Iced Lavender Latte and an Iced Peanut Butter Latte. The premium matcha powder with your choice of milk, blended with a wonderfully cloud-like cream that will make your tastebuds dance with delight. In addition to these beverages, we couldn't resist a couple of the homemade bakery items, the French Toast and Matcha Croissant. Both were fluffy, delicious and absolutely perfect for sharing. The staff at this small, boutique shop in a retail-heavy area of downtown Newhall are super friendly, efficient, and experts at drink and food preparation. The prices are more than fair given the premium product quality. Prepare to wait in line that is typically stretched outside the small space, but trust me, it's worth it. After spending almost a month in Japan, I've been trying to find a honest-to-goodness authentic Japanese Bakery with real ingredients and taste from Japan, and not some over-sugared Americanized version. The Loaf is it. Just have one bite of that salted butter roll, and if you're like me, you be transported back to those wonderful underground train station cafes dotting Tokyo and across Japan. I just love how the taste melts in your mouth, and yet stays light and fluffy. A Japanese bakery in the middle of no where. Lines were long for their fresh baked goods. So, we tried a bunch of items, and the only reason I'm giving this place 3.5 stars is because I think around here it's probably the best you're going to get. The custard buns were 3 stars. Didn't really like the bun very much. Custard was average. Yuzu tart wasn't very good. The pastry wasn't very flaky and the yuzu was meh. Didn't like this pastry at all. The best thing our group had was the strawberry croissants. That was 4 stars. Fresh strawberries and the cream was good and the croissant was flaky and buttery unlike the tart. Now I have yet to visit the shop, but my sister who is a big fan of this bakery has sent me pictures of the shop and the aethetics closely ties in with the packaging I have pictured. It is sweet, cute, bright and whimsical. The Loaf Bakery is produced by Okayama Kobo, a bakery chain founded by Tsunetaka Kawakami, that is open in Anaheim, DTLA, Honolulu and Laguna Niguel. The Loaf has the same quality of baked good, made with flour from Hokkaido, Japan, having no additives or preservatives. It is recommended that you eat it the day of since it has a shelf life of a couple of days. Talk about freshness! I recently visited my sister and her family and she had a box to share with me. We had the following: Red Bean Salt & Butter Roll: Simple and delicious. Highly recommend, especially to those who like red bean filling. Not to sweet (a high compliment given by Asians when talking about desserts.) Chocolate Emoji: Soft bun with custard inside Amande: Croissant with a cookie topping, topped with chocolate chips. Cute and delicious Japanese bread using Hokkaido flour! I absolutely love the chocolate emoji - they put various character and the inside chocolate has a bit of custard too. It's more on the medium size filled. I also tried their other buns and the notable one is the custard, I love how well they filled this one. Kevin and I finally stopped by The Loaf Bakery a couple of weeks ago after it was recommended to us by a few friends and I can't believe we waited so long!! From the moment we walked in, it felt cozy and authentic. It's a smaller location, so it was a bit busy, but honestly that just added to the charm. It had that warm, welcoming bakery energy where everything smells incredible and you can tell things are made with care. We ordered the Matcha square croissant, and it was one of the most unique pastries I've had. The croissant itself was beautifully crisp and flaky on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside. The matcha filling was smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced not overly sweet, just heavenly. And the little heart detail on top? Absolutely adorable. I truly appreciate cute touches like that it made the whole experience feel extra special! For drinks, I ordered a matcha sea salt cold brew and Kevin got a taro tea. Super cute bakery in downtown newhall with lots of tasty Japanese pastries! I came by on a Saturday morning and there was a a line but nothing too crazy as the staff is quick and attentive! I got the bacon bacon, japanini & French toast along with an iced latte! The best bread of the 3 was the japanini, I'm still thinking about it now, weeks later! It was an artisanal panini with pesto, tomato, bacon, cheese and basil! It was so yummy, and perfect for a quick bite! Great selection of Japanese sweet treats and savoury buns! An array of drink options too -- hot and cold. Got the hot oat milk latte (can't go wrong with that!) and the following: French toast (our fave!), strawberry and custard croissants, tomato and pesto buns, and a cinnamon bun. Free parking on the street. Lots of people flock here as they're quite popular, but the line moves pretty quickly. Better to get your order to go and eat it elsewhere as they don't really have any tables or anywhere to sit and enjoy your treats. Definitely a "grab and go" kind of a café. read more

This place is really good! I came in on a weekend to get a matcha and try one of their pastries. It wasn't too packed, and the line moved fast. It was around 1:30pm, so a lot of their more popular items were already sold out. I ended up getting a banana cream matcha, strawberry croissant and a new item that I forgot the name of but it was a bread roll filled with pork. Everything was BOMB. I can't wait to go back and try more! The only reason why I took off a star is because of their hours. They close at 2:30pm everyday, which sucks because I want to be able to take my Godson after school but he gets out at 2:35pm. If they would stay open until at least 3:30pm that would be ideal and I think they'd get a lot more business from the nearby middle and high school kids. read more

I was really, really confused when I saw this place on Yelp (was visiting the area for a short day trip) and saw that all the baked items and general theming of the store was suspiciously similar to Okayama Kobo in Anaheim (and now Little Tokyo). I thought maybe someone had...quietly just copied everything they did, but upon inspection of their website found that the owners are the same! Not sure why they decided to go for a different name? But I think The Loaf does sound catchy/chic lol. Items are just as great as their other locations! They actually have a few items expensive to this location (or maybe I just visited while other seasonal items were in stock that weren't when I visited Okayama). They had interesting new things like cubed croissant loaf pasteries filled with sesame and matcha cream, mocha french toast, strawberry beret, and the seasonal santa custard bread. All were really delicious! I particularly liked the mocha french toast and sesame cubed croissant. I do think The Loaf/Okayama is on the pricier side, but the love, care, and quality is definitely all there. They also had a seasonal strawberry sakura latte that I tried. Really liked the sakura flavor, but thought it didn't mesh well with the espresso/coffee flavoring. They just sort of clash, and I didn't think it was pleasant. Would totally get a sakura tea latte or something though, if they ever have that in the future. I think the sakura flavor would do well with tea and milk rather than coffee and milk. The staff here are so welcoming, polite, and helpful -- it really adds to how beautiful the bakery already is. It's my second time here this week and I can't stop buying their breads because everything is so good. The salt bread is perfectly done and tastes amazing, and the yuzu croissant is a must-try -- they definitely don't skimp on the yuzu! It's mixed right into the cream, and the flavor is just delicious. The drinks are unique and tasty too, but their pastries are definitely the stars. This place is everything I expected it to be and more! Fresh pastries (sweet & savory) coming out of the over fresh and being made daily. This has been on my list for over a year and I finally had the opportunity to go. I ordered buttered roll with red bean paste and it was incredible!! I also tried the croissant that looks like a cube with the match inside. I will say it was delicious but too much filling to pastry ratio for me. I squeezed most of it out. The matcha bun with red bean paste was also tasty. I must add that the service was exceptional - the staff was friendly and patient with me. As an unofficial matcha connoisseur....this is probably one of the best strawberry matchas I've ever had. The foam was perfectly sweet & salty. The matcha itself wasn't overly sweet either. I got it with almond milk and it was just smooth all around. Had curry pan for the first time and the curry to bread ratio was 10/10. I read here that people prefer it to have more filling but I thought it was a nice balance. We've been eyeing this little bakery but have always seemed to stop by when they're closed. We finally got to try it and thought it was delicious. It seems like every item is baked fresh and with care. The workers are nice and it is a cozy environment with little toys and music playing. We got the cookie salt & butter roll, which melt in your mouth delicious with some sweetness to it. It reminded me of starbread, for any Filipinos who know what those are. Japan comes to Valencia! Love it. Salt Bread trend ignited. Good chilled matcha minus vanilla syrup add honey. There was a white looking sentiment at the bottom of my matcha and not sure what that was but it tasted good. Tried the salted bread sausage thing and the French toast. The bread was a bit dry around 11am on a weekday. Maybe I need to arrive early am to get a moist product. No sit down area in our outside tied to the bakery. Now every couple of weeks I stop by to pick up a loaf, and it has become one of our favorite little traditions. The Loaf is a cute little bright bakery tucked in the corner of downtown Newhall. When I'm in the area, I always make a pit stop for their Matcha Sea Salt Cold Brew and some tasty pastries. Japanini 5/5* It's a neat little savory package of pesto, tomato, bacon, and cheese. The top and bottom is toasty with that cheese-skirt type crusty crunch, but the bread is soft and fluffy. The filling somehow is really creamy and gives good mouth feel. Oyaki Takana 3.5/5* Mustard greens doesn't sound like the greatest filling for savory pastries, but somehow it works. They stuff it with a good amount of filling, but it is mostly towards the middle, so you end up with a lot of bread at the corners. The first time it was soft milk bread texture, but other times it was denser and too bready. Black Sesame Cube Croissant 5/5* Insanely flaky!! You can see the beautiful lamination layers creating a design on this cube and even feel the crispness. Breaking into this indulgent masterpiece is an ASMR dream. The black sesame cream adds just a touch of nutty sweetness that wasn't overly sweet. It was really filled and messy to eat, but totally worth it. By far, my favorite out of everything. Matcha Cube Croissant 2.5/5* Same insanely flaky croissant, but somehow I got the one with no filling inside. The only matcha cream was the dollop on top. It left the pastry dry and felt lacking. The matcha cream didn't have as much flavor as the black sesame, and although I love matcha everything, I wouldn't get this again. Matcha Sea Salt Cold Brew 5/5* I get this every single time. The matcha foam is thick and creamy and balances out the cold brew. The cold brew had a strong flavor, was smooth with no acidity, and had just the right amount of sugar. It's a small bakery, but there's always something delicious. There are a few staple pastries and breads that are a permanent fixture, but The Loaf rotates some items as well for variety based on the ingredients in season. The apricot danish wasn't on the menu this time, but there was a honey fromage pizzette. I'm excited to see what other pastries they will whip up next. read more

They really allowed the matcha flavor to take center stage, and it was moist and fluffy. 8/10 Oyaki shumai: the filling really tastes like a shumai! I only wish I had saved this to eat at home so I could warm it up because it was cold upon purchasing it and therefore a bit lackluster. I'm sure warming it up would have made it quite delicious and filling. 7/10 Sea salt jasmine peach tea: I ordered with no foam and it was so refreshing. 7/10 Overall, a great spot that I would love to drive back to for. Service was efficient and friendly. Even though the line extends out the door, it moves along pretty quickly! Amazing baked goods, the French toast was my fave. The lattes there are amazing...the taro with strawberry foam was delicious. At most places, strawberry added to a latte or matcha just tastes like overly sweet syrup mixed into the drink. Here, the strawberry cold foam was light, creamy, and actually tasted like fresh strawberry flavor without overpowering the drink. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. This place had an amazing curry pan. Comparing it to other Japanese bakeries I have been to in socal, this was definitely the best curry pan I have ever had. If this bakery was closer to me, I would be here all the time. The pastries are so tasty, unique AND cute! They have so many different options from savory to sweet. They also have coffee drinks to go with your baked goods! I ordered a the black sesame cube croissant and the kobu kuma to go. I had never even see a cube croissant before! Loved the presentation. Great staff, location, and pastries.. come early enough and you'll have an amazing selection of baked goods from savory to sweet ! My only negative is the place is filthy every time I come in.
