This place is great and the food is amazing. We were originally sat at a table and asked if we could move to a booth. No problem!! We were moved to a booth and David U was our server. He is friendly and gave great suggestions. We had the fried green tomatoes, bison meatloaf w/mash potatoes and asparagus (perfect!!!), Smash burger w/Old Bay chips. All of the food was fantastic especially the fried green tomatoes. A MUST HAVE if you visit. M/F and family restrooms. We will be back again and again and again... Our 1st year Anniversary, 1st experience, 1st stop in Asheville, and Pacs knocked it out the ball park with their Fried Green Tomatoes. Solid 15/10 Rating We could not decide on the Entree, so we went with the Bison, veggies and Mashed potatoes. This was also a Homeroom. Not your typical greasy meal. It was well prepared, non-greasy, and I'm not a fan of blackberry, but the blackberry bbq glaze was Fantastic. Also this was very light if you're wanting to indulge in a light meal. Not to mention the veggies. The broccoli and carrots were also soaked with flavor and juices, so every bite was just leaking with flavor and not your typical dry veggie. Nice. Kind of a classic bar with history, but also some modernization. I went on a Wednesday night, and the place was pretty full. The bar staff are very capable but a little crass. Very clearly professionals, but also busy. The food service at the bar was fine, but not ideal. I ordered a Thai Salad and a beer, and the Thai Salad was fine. I was glad they had an entree salad without any meat on it. It wasn't spectacular, but it was reasonably well presented with fresh and crisp vegetables. Overall a good experience. It's been a minute since I was at Pack's. Figured it would be a good day to go by with football on the TVs and the festival in the park. When I got inside, it wasn't too busy. Wasn't very loud. So, I figured there wouldn't be much of a wait for service or any issue with the food. Oops! Sat at the bar. Nice enough customers around chatted me up. Ordered the Blue Moon draft and some pickle chips. Enough time went by after ordering that the pickle chips arrived first, and it took the delivering manager asking the bartender if she wanted him to get my drink since it hadn't been taken care of yet. After she said she "had it", she still didn't get to it for a few more minutes. So, about 18 minutes for a draft beer while other customers were served who had arrived after me. I think the food pictures paint adequate picture of the food quality. Enjoyed this establishment when I lived here 2 years ago. Things have gone downhill. Don't think I'll be back. No longer on my list of recommendations for those who ask. read more

Got a seat at the bar easily on a Sunday night. The dining room was just about full! We had already had breakfast and lunch so were looking for some items to share. The bartender was super friendly. Got us our beers - stellar draft list - and water very quickly. We ordered buffalo chicken dip which came out piping and gooey and so tasty! Pack's Tavern was a short walk from the hotel, and the large space and great beer selection delivered. There was a short wait for a table, so I ordered a beer flight to taste several local brews. The space is large and open with rustic decor. Once at the table, I ordered the salmon, and asked for medium rare. Unfortunately, it was overcooked so I sent it back. The kitchen did better the second time around, but it was still not medium rare. If I visit again, I may stick to beer and appetizers or a burger. read more

We stopped in for a light lunch and just got appetizers and drinks. It's in a busy part of town but so cute!! Street parking is ample along the roads and it's easy enough to walk to. I am so bummed to be an outlier in what appears to be a very good run of reviews but man, we just did not have a great experience here. We got into Asheville late after road-tripping from Athens GA and we were starving. A friend of my husband's had recommended Pack's and the reviews looked great so we decided to head here since their kitchen was open later. Now, the space is very nice. Lots of wood, making it quite cozy. It wasn't terribly busy for a Saturday night so we were seated right away in a nice booth. That's kind of where the positives end. I ordered the brisket mac and cheese and my husband ordered the meatloaf. Now, the food LOOKED amazing but it was so underwhelming. The brisket on my mac and cheese was dry and stringy and the mac and cheese, though the right gooey cheesy texture, was quite bland. My husband's bison meatloaf was also dry/overcooked and, though the menu said it came with green beans, it was served with asparagus instead, which is not his favorite and he wished they would have told him if they changed the veggie side as he might not have ordered it. Now at this point it probably would have been around a three star reviews. The food wasn't awful but it wasn't great. Mid. But the service knocks it down another peg. Our server was wholly uninterested in helping us and I think we only saw him 2 or 3 times, one of those times was when he brought us the check. It was on a wooden clipboard and he literally just threw it on our table as he walked by, not even making eye contact or acknowledging that he was dropping it off. It literally startled me as I wasn't expecting it to fly across the table like that. I know everyone has off nights but we honestly did nothing to this guy. Barely even said 3 words to him outside of our order (didn't have a chance to) so such brusqueness felt really unnecessary. Idk, the whole thing just kind of left a bad taste in our mouths. We left so bummed that our one dinner in Asheville was such a disappointment. Again, maybe it was just an off night? But I'm in zero rush to try again to find out. read more

Hadn't been here for a long time, but this is always been a solid place. Nice selection of craft beer and variety of food. Tonight I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly along with savory broccoli florets, and mashed potatoes with fantastic mushroom gravy! Unfortunately, they had the air conditioning on for some reason on this cold 40 degree night and it made for a chilly dining experience. Service was good throughout the meal. I got a piece of chocolate cake to go, and it was not good at all. The cake was stale and the icing not good. Tasted like something you'd grab at a gas station, totally do not recommend it read more

Pack's Tavern is in a 120 year old building in he heart of downtown. The place is decorated to make you think you're in 1932, back at the close of Prohibition. Despite not being very full (it's quite a large place), it took a few minutes for my server to acknowledge me. Once he did, service was very good. I ordered their prime rib sandwich with au jus for dipping, French fries, and their draft root beer. Everything was very good. The fries (unpeeled) were hot, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The root beer reminded me of the root beers I drank growing up in the 50s/60s. And the roast beef sandwich was generous, the cheese was creamy, and the au jus was very savory and not at all over-salted. This was my third visit to Packs, and easily the best. It's a great spot for a very filling lunch, and I'm sure I'll be back. read more

This was an unexpected surprise! We went on a Friday night and the Orange drinks were $5 (half off) and they were tasty! The manager and servers were on point when it came to gluten free. They send out a manager to talk to you about your food choice, options and the process - they have the cook clean their space and help decrease the possibility of cross contamination. The food was delicious! I got the chicken Marsala and my partner got a French dip with fries and the mozzarella sticks. Definitely recommend! One of the best gluten free meals I've had - they even had delicious gluten free gravy!!! LARGE RESTAURANT IN DOWNTOWN AVL! My dad loves this place, so he brought me and my husband. Firstly I was impressed by how large it is, especially for the area it is in. A great place to keep in mind for large parties or if you don't want to make a reservation elsewhere. For appetizers we got the fried pickles and the elote dip. The pickles came with a flavorful dipping sauce, and the breading was thick yet crispy. The elote dip was one of my favorite appetizers I've had recently, great combination of sweet and savory. They give you plenty of chips to go with it so you don't run out prematurely. The hand breaded chicken tenders were to die for, probably the best I've ever had. Plus the portion size is very large. Prices are a bit expensive in my opinion, but the food is amazing and portions are large enough to share. A party of 3 with cocktails, 2 appetizers, and 2 entrees was over $100. My family and I came here for Thanksgiving. Reservations need to be made in advance. They survey full course Thanksgiving meal that includes salad, stuffing, dressing, moist turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie. My wife and I drove from the Charlotte area to visit The NC Arboretum. After our visit we stopped at Pack's Tavern for dinner. My steak taco had overcooked steak, and the flour tortillas were toasted (edges were hard). The fries were good, and the coffee was warm following a day outside. My wife's backyard BBQ burger was delicious. The service was a bit meh. Our server Spencer seemed a bit disinterested and underwhelming. But in fairness to Spencer, we observed the other servers, and they ALL appeared disinterested and underwhelming. Maybe a little training is needed. Plus, your tips will improve with just a little bit of effort. We enjoyed the layout of the restaurant, its history and location. Popped in with family for a late dinner. Seated quickly. Note .. parking around the corner but watch that you do not park in spaces reserved for the city. Very large venue inside that has been restored beautifully. They have a large bar and plenty of TVs. The menu is eclectic...lots of options for everyone. The portions are huge .. even the salads. I had the Philly cheese steak sandwich which was good. I wish it had more fillings but the taste was spectacular. I subbed asparagus for the side .. mistake. I was trying to be healthy but the asparagus was covered in salt and cooked just short of mushy. Others at the table had the buffalo Mac n cheese. I'm was released from jury duty early and stopped by for lunch to celebrate. The pastrami in their Ruben is made in house and it may be the best I have ever had! Went to Pack's Tavern yesterday evening for dinner and had a great experience overall! We started with the fried pickles, which came out hot, crispy, and absolutely delicious. For our entrees, I ordered the Prime Rib Dip while my friend got the El Cubano. The Prime Rib Dip was excellent, and the au jus paired with it perfectly. I didn't try the El Cubano myself, but my friend really enjoyed it. The service was friendly, and the only small thing I noticed was that our water glasses weren't refilled very often. It certainly wasn't a big deal, but it would have made an already enjoyable meal even better. Overall, it was a solid dining experience, and I'd definitely return! read more

Parking was a bit of a hassle because it's just street parking but not on the street the restaurant's on. Sadly, they were out of their mains like brisket, skirt steak, and had a limited amount of meatballs left. For starters, we did the Elote Corn Dip and their breaded wings with lemon pepper dry rub. My friends didn't like the corn dip and the wings were extremely salty. I would've done the brisket, but was craving a pizza so got the Margherita pizza. It was very underwhelming, just tomato sauce on bread. My friends did the Mt. Mitchell burger and then the meatballs. They were not impressed either. Our waitress was really nice.
