We were headed out of town for an event in the Raleigh area and we were searching for a bite to eat beforehand. We wanted something a little different so we looked up some local spots and found this place. I noticed an interesting 5, 4, 3 drink special idea at the hostess stand which prompted me to order a beer with dinner. I also liked the TV setup they had with 5 jumbo screens to watch different basketball games on. When we sat down we waited, and waited, and finally our server came to the table stopped to tell us he would be with us in a moment but didn't grab drink orders. I found that strange but it was fairly crowded. We did finally order drinks and decided it was best to order food then as well. I ordered the wings and my wife decided to split some nachos with her cousin. I'm not usually one that cares too awful much about how long the food is taking but we had somewhere to be. The food took almost an hour to come out! Now you would think the server would almost be over attentive if the kitchen was backed up to try and keep the guests satisfied but this wasn't the case. There were a few tables around us that got up and left because of the wait time. The overall service was definitely dissatisfying but the food wasn't all that bad. My wife enjoyed the nachos, albeit, engulfing them so we'd be on time to our event. My wings weren't all that bad either. The servers are super friendly, service is fast and the food...well all I can say is they are now catering our wedding in October! The location of Backyard Bistro is great (super close to the PNC arena and the NC State Fairgrounds). If you are a sports lover, there are plenty of huge screens to watch a game. The restaurant seems very dark to me and I was not impressed with the food. I had the boneless wings with garlic parmesan dressing. The wings were so overly salty that I did not even want to finish them. The fries were soggy and it was just not up to the standard of great bar food. Recently, my mom and I had to travel to Raleigh for a family event. We stayed at the hotel behind Backyard Bistro. It was so convenient, especially after we had spent all day traveling from Georgia. Considering it was a Friday night, we were thrilled to be seated immediately. The breadth and variety of the menu made us very happy. Burgers, steaks, wings, salads.... and lots of drink specials. So much happiness in one location! The atmosphere of BB is very attractive. We loved all the wood. And I told my husband next time we go up to see our daughter and her fiancé, we must go there. He loves sports bars, and he loves lots of TVs. This place has big screens everywhere. Mom went with a chicken wrap. She could barely finish a half. The other half she enjoyed the next night when we were too tired to go out. I decided to go with a cup of clam chowder and the house salad with a house dressing, a maple vinaigrette.. The chowder was full of clams and was well-seasoned and flavorful. It filled me up to the point I barely touched the salad, but the bites I did take contained lots of vegetables and was very fresh. The dressing was sweet and tart and had a nice bite. I enjoyed it again the next night, and it was still fresh. Service was prompt and our server came by several times to check on us. I want to go back once it gets cooler this autumn or maybe next spring and enjoy the patio seating. If you're attending an event at the PNC Arena, well, it's right across the street. Seated myself at a booth, resting one elbow in the tabletop, I noticed a sticky residue and reseated myself at the bar--should have recognized this telltale ted flag and left immediately. Ordered the baby kale entree salad for lunch. Apparently the adjective, baby, referred to the amount rather than the size or maturity of the kale in the dish. The amount of kale in the salad would have easily fit in a 1.5oz. shot glass. Other than being misleading, the salad was lacking in both flavor and visual appeal. The salad was filled with awkward chunks of raw red onion, lopped uneven portions of portobello mushroom, canned chickpeas, and soggy bits of baby spinach, presumably nearing its expiration date. The plate was then topped off with a mostly-flavorless hummus, only recognizable by its texture and context. read more

I visited with eleven in my family after graduation. All was just fine and better than the reviews average. The food prep was a little slow but we all enjoyed our meals. More ice, hotter food, but I noticed we ate every bit. I had a club sandwich that was more bread than guts but it tasted ok if one is famished. They need feta cheese here. When my husband told me that he had had the best burger ever at this place, I was cynical, but a few weeks later there was a game we couldn't watch at home and wanted to watch, so we went. At the time my son was about 16 months old and my meals out were usually so focused on him that I barely registered what I was eating. This experience was different. The $3 local beer special is awesome, and when my burger came and I took a few bites I though "OK, this is definitely servicable" but I still didn't get the impression that it was the best. Then all of sudden, 5 minutes had passed without me being aware of anything going on around me. I don't know what my son was doing, what our dinner companions were saying, or what the score of the game was. All I knew is that I was eating the tastiest, juiciest, most flavorful burger I had ever had. Last night I went for the second time, and had the second best burger I've ever had. Along with good beer, a very attentive and friendly waiter despite the fact that it was game night and crazy busy even at 5:30PM. I told my husband that I was sad it was almost over and I didn't want to take the last bite. I also told him I regretted letting him have a precious bite of MY burger, because it was a bite I didn't get to have. I am shocked. I have worked near Backyard Bistro for 5 years now and I still have not written a review. Backyard Bistro is the place we all go when we can think of nothing else to have for lunch. Their menu is very American, but it has a nice mix of Southern favorites. I would love to come here for NFL games on the weekend, but seeing as how this is a New England Patriots hangout I tend to stay away. I do like that they have many TV screens and even have boxes on the tables that allow you to listen to whichever TV you prefer. One of these days I am going to have to make it over for a big NC State game (road game of course) because I am sure it is a site to see. As for the food. I usually get some variation of their BBQ. While it is not the best BBQ in the world, it is very tasty, and I do like the sauce they serve with it. "Backyard Bistro" conjures an image in my head: a little girl setting up her kitchen set and tea set on plastic patio furniture in the backyard, serving up Play-Doh foods to Teddy bears and Barbie dolls. This Backyard Bistro however, is none of that. Sit within walking distance from the RBC, Backyard Bistro is probably the premiere spot to grab a bite, or maybe a drink or two, before the game or any performances in the arena stadium, or on any given days, serves as a quick lunch spot for the office buildings across. From the interior setup, with wooden panels everywhere and a wall of giant TVs, undoubtedly this is passing as a sports bar for folks to be "closer to the action." There are plenty bar food stable here; you get your burgers and nachos and hot wings. But what cater to the "Bistro" side is probably the Tamale and grilled Ahi Tuna and Zucchini Parmigiana on the menu. Personally, I've tried the Bison Burger--try to get it medium rare because bison meat is lean, the Backyard BBQ burger were very flavorful with sauce on the side, the Fried Cheese are essentially mozzarella sticks (in very good size actually) with panko breading, and Chicken and Dumplings (what??) looked very good, but I wasn't able to get a bite in before it was devoured by my table mates. WARNING: Be careful during Hurricanes (hockey not weather condition) season or any major events at the RBC, or give yourself at least an hour extra, because this place WILL BE PACKED! read more

My review is for the catering - We had them cater our rehearsal dinner of about 50 people. Even from speaking to the coordinator for the first time - they were so friendly and nice. We got to pick everything we wanted..added more sides, subbed out desserts, and picked exactly what entrees we wanted. They were on time and had set up under control. The grill master was so nice and friendly. They provided everything! Everyone raved about how good the food was. Most of our families are from the north and we really wanted to introduce them to southern cooking. I really cant say enough how good the food tasted. With a buffet, it's easy to have crappy food - so I was very impressed with everything. The sides were amazing but not heavy. Clean up went just as smoothly as set up. Prices were VERY reasonable when comparing to other BBQ places we checked out. Would not hesitate at all to go to them for catering needs again. read more

Looks like a great big chain, but isn't. Even the tri-fold laminated menus don't feel special, until you see the little blurb that says they're a local restaurant that does their best to source mostly local ingredients -- including beef from Angus Barn. That said, the food is going to be mostly sports bar par. I suggest sticking with the burgers and sandwiches. I decided to go with one of their monthly features, the Rasta Pasta (great name! poor execution!). The shrimp was way overcooked and took about ten chews per each side of the mouth. And the chicken -- though supposedly marinated in jerk spices -- tasted just plain grilled. Disappointment in the entree aside, I knocked out a bunch of their trademark mini tacos and some Wisconsin-style cheese curds and couldn't have been more pleased with that calorific cuisine (fried cheese is a rare splurge!). And, thank you yelpers, for pointing me in the direction of the Backyard Brew -- a light easy beer with a pretzel and a cheese cube garnish. An app with your ale? Awesome. Brilliant place for watching the game, or before actually going to the game -- as was evidenced by the many Canes fans around. As others have mentioned, you can dial into your channel of choice and watch any number of the big screens adorning the walls. There's a notch on the dial for music. But it's a lie. Other folks are right - don't even bother attempting to come if there's anything going on at PNC or Carter-Finley. That said, if you come at an off time, this place is quite awesome. I mean, if you're even slightly into sports, you almost get an erection (or lady wood, if you're of the vaginal persuasion) when you see the TV setup. This is the first place I've been in quite a long time where you can actually get the TV sound broadcast at the table. Rather than suffering through no sound or vainly attempting to read closed captions, they have a speaker setup at every table (which you can tune to any of the five TVs they're displaying). Oh yeah. Food good (which still pisses me off that that phrase doesn't rhyme, but that's a separate story). Nice big portions, pretty decent quality, and quite tasty. And the truffle fries are good enough to cause a problem in your marriage (not that my wife and I fought over them or anything... *cough*). Service was pretty good. Not amazing, but perfectly adequate. And our waitress definitely earned a better tip when she patiently cleaned up after me after I turned full-moron and knocked over my leftovers. Beer was decent. Nice local selection, but they happened to be out of several of the local options when I was in there. Not too many craft options, but there was just enough variety to satisfy most non-beer geeks. This place actually surprised me even with the ridiculous pre Michael Buble crowd. We walked into a packed house with a forty minute wait for a table. No biggie though we gave ourselves plenty of time. I ordered a bottle of wine from the bar and a White Street Scottish ale I was super stoked they had White Street on tap keeping it local folks i like it. They ran out of wine glasses and we had to drink our wine in cognac glasses which wasn't ideal but it worked. The bartenders and our server were all very friendly and attentive. I was really surprised how good the service was behind the bar as busy as they were they never left you waiting. After being sat at our table we looked over the large menu to decide on our order. We started with the pork nachos they were pretty tasty my only complaint is I don't like that cheap nacho cheese - real melted shredded cheese would have made these banging. For dinner I went with the tuna nicoise salad. The salad was very good and all their salad dressing our made in house. The tuna was cooked rare and it was a large portion of tuna. I love a good bar that gives you some healthy options other then just bar grub. This won't be my first choice when I eat out but if there is a game on or I'm in the area I will definitely be back. There are plenty of large screen TVs for games and lots of space to bring a crowd. Our food came out fast and we had plenty of time to make it to the concert. read more

I've been to Backyard Bistro several times....before hockey games, meeting friends for lunch during the work week, girl's night out, out with friends on a weekend....and every time, this place has been phenomenal! Service has always been friendly and the food has always been delicious! I've tried so many different things on their menu and have always had a great experience! Favorite Appetizer: Loaded Backyard Nachos Favorite Salad: They had a special one day at lunch that had goat cheese on a spinach salad with a warm bacon dressing. SO GOOD! Favorite Burger: The Backyard Burger with pulled pork on it. YUM! Favorite Entree: Beef Brisket. It was so tender! Favorite Side: Sweet potato fries. How can you go wrong with sweet potato fries? We've also used Backyard Bistro for catering office events. OMG! Hands down the best catering! (And I've had some pretty good catering!) They have delicious pulled BBQ pork! Their broccoli salad is creamy and tasty. It has red onions and raisins. You should definitely try their mac n cheese! I hate to have to write this review, because Backyard Bistro used to be one of our favorite lunch spots, but over the past year the prices have gone up and the quality has gone down. Way down. Today was the third time in the past few months that we've received a table full of cold food and burnt-beyond-belief burgers. All after waiting only 45 minutes after we ordered for our food to come out. Seriously, I don't know how a place that specializes in backyard on-the-grill food can make a hamburger that is both charred black like a charcoal briquette and cold. I guess they have been practicing at it, though, because they're getting very consistent at producing these inedible hockey pucks. Besides the burnt burgers, the rest of the food, fries, tater tots, hot sandwiches, was just cold, all of it. When we spoke with the manager it was pretty obvious why the quality has gone down so much. He was not at all interested in what the problems with our experience were, only in trying to buy us off with remade food, free deserts, or appetizer cards for next time. "Here's what I can do for you," he said. Sorry, but the remade food won't help because we're already late getting back to work, I don't want to wait another 15 minutes for you to box up my free dessert, and the appetizer card won't get used, because we're never coming back. We'd been fooled with the offer of remade food before, but it came out again cold and burnt, and took another half hour. Sad to see Backyard Bistro having gone from being one of our favorite, "this is a real treat", lunch spots down to this. The problems have clearly become a pattern that nobody is interested in addressing. If you're thinking about going here, do yourself a favor and go to the Wendy's down the block. Went to Backyard Bistro for the first time yesterday with the family. We were all starving after a long day of tax-free shopping, and this was the closest place to where we were going next. We were seated quickly, and our orders were taken just as fast. We were all very impressed with the layout- five huge TV screens, and each table is facing them in one way or another. Each table is also equipped with a box that lets you choose which TV station you want to listen to, we definitely had a lot of fun playing with that. The food itself took a very long time to get out. I ordered chicken tenders (for my inner child), my sister ordered the (if I'm not mistaken) shrimp salad wrap, my mom the Backyard Roadkill, and my dad the Backyard Burger. The only item off of that list that seemed to be the one that was worth ordering was the shrimp salad wrap. The Backyard Burger was good, but not phenomenal. I was dissappointed in the chicken tenders, most of it was just the hand-breaded crust, there was barely any chicken to eat inside. I will admit, I did thoroughly enjoy the fries! The waitress and staff were friendly, but I was disappointed in their slow delivery, since there was almost no one in the entire restaurant. It must get popular during the local hockey and college football seasons, but in times like this, not so much. For those burger/meat-lovers, this place has a variety of choices. But for those of us who just enjoy select items and a good salad from time to time, this is NOT the place to go. I'm on the fence about whether or not I actually want to go back. Extremely disappointed that though there were empty tables I was only offered a place at the very crowded bar or the very crowded rail (like the bar without the alcohol). As a matter of fact as I was debating staying or going somewhere else while waiting for a table 3 guys came in and were immediately seated in a booth. All I wanted was to be able to sit and eat, might have been there all of 30 minutes tops. And the whole time the blonde hostess treated me like I was scum, a bother, not worth her time or attention. We were headed to a show at PNC arena and were pleased to find this was located within walking distance. A plus was that you could park in their lot if attending the show for a small fee. The guy collecting money for parking told us there was no wait to dine so we opted to dine here and pay to park. We headed in to the restaurant and immediately we were greeted by a hostess who told us there was a 10 minute wait unless we could dine seating in the bar. She also advised that they were doing "family style" seating. We didn't know what that was but she advised that we would be seated at a long table with other couples waiting to dine. We decided we would give it a try as we had already paid to park. We waited for 30 minutes and still did not get seated. We saw a manager walk by and stopped her to see if she could determine when we would be able to get a table. She did come back to tell us that the hostess had forgotten to put us down. She did find us a table a few minutes later and gave us some chips and salsa for the wait. The server was good but it was clear they were severely understaffed on a busy night with a show playing at the arena next door. Our food took awhile to come out and so did our drinks. Food was mediocre at best but the bar drinks were good. Overall, not the best experience and not somewhere we would likely go again. I wanted to like it, I really did. The location next to the RBC Center is great, and its proximity to my work makes it even better. I had stopped in one time before with my wife, but we just could not find anything on the menu that interested us. We had heard a lot about Backyard Bistro, since then, so I decided to give it a try for a business lunch. I ordered the Monterrey Chicken Sandwich that was supposed to come with sliced avocados, tomatoes, pepper jack and organic bib lettuce. The sandwich did not have avocados - but a small dollop of old/grayish guacamole, a single tomato, and the bun was smathered in butter, and the chicken breast was more like a chicken feather it was so thin. The food was just really forgettable, and they made a healthy dish, unhealthy. A friend told me not to bother trying this place & I should have listened! I stopped by for a sandwich & a beer & found out she was right - the prices are high, the service is SLOW, & the food is nothing to write home about! read more

Decided to eat here before the Justin Timberlake concert...apparently most of Raleigh decided to as well. My husband somehow managed to squeeze in at the bar and order our drinks. Not even sure how he did this the place was packed. When we arrived we were quoted a 30 minute wait...4:40 pm arrival and we got seated at 5:30pm. We shared a 6 top table with another couple which was absolutely fine. They were also going to see JT. We gave our orders for food and drink as soon as server arrived - worried we'd be late for the show. (I was basing this on other's reviews) Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Hub had the french dip and I had a grilled chicken salad. Everything looked and tasted great. Added bonus we paid to just park our car there. The worst. Went to watch NCSU play on a Saturday afternoon... 3:30 kickoff. Yes, there are TVs and projector screens a plenty, but the tables shoved up against the GIANT projector screens are literally the worst and most illogical idea ever. How can you possibly sit adjacent to a huge screen and not only look directly UP but directly to the RIGHT or LEFT at the same time. Additionally, THERE ARE ABOUT 50 TVs!! We asked for ONE. ONE to be turned to the Big 10 network, and our request was denied. Rather rudely, I may add. "YOu can go back to your table... if it changes, that was a yes." Onto the service... I'm not sure how, if your job depends on tips, you can afford to be so rude to your customers. We sat at a table with about eight 25ish-yr olds, and our server was irritable and annoyed anytime a new person came to sit with us. Took about 30 minutes and 3 reminders to have her bring a few of us waters, and she seemed angry that we weren't ordering entrees... it was 4pm. No one was trying to eat a ton of food. We were there for beers+the game. DID I MENTION THE RESTAURANT WAS ONLY ABOUT 35% FULL?! The one star was for the pork loaded tots. They were delicious. Too bad I'll never go back to try enjoy again. I still enjoy coming here and always enjoy the burgers. I don't stray too much from that. The banana pudding is always delightful. Disappointed to see the poutine was taken off the menu, and extra disappointed today to see that they don't offer a brunch menu anymore. They are open for brunch at 11 on Sundays, but now only have their regular menu plus about 4 specials - some more breakfast-y than others. Backyard Bistro is a great place to grab beers (much better price than what you'll get at PNC) and a bite before a Canes game, or any other event at PNC. The menu has much more variety than one would expect. They have the typical bar food, but they also have some gourmet items to fit anyone's pallet. I am a fan of the Greek salad, which is anything but ordinary. The romaine consists of two romaine hearts that have been grilled so they have a charred taste. YUMMY! They have most local brews on draft, of course I support Wake Forest by partaking of the White Street Scottish Ale. Be sure to go early if you are going before an event. I usually plan for a 5pm arrival time to be sure to score a table. They do not take reservations. read more

It would definitely be helpful if they took the bistro off their name, as it's a little misleading. I too went there with a Groupon coupon and ordered the brisket special. It was on a night when a Canes player was there, so it was packed...but they were all leaving. It took a while to clear a table for 2, but I was O.K. with a wait. Now, back to the brisket. It was not good. One of the owners must have been watching my sad face because he came to our table and asked how everything was. I was honest. Long story short, he made me brisket the way brisket should be made and offered just compensation. Me likey. I will go back to use the gift card before an event at the RBC center...on beer. The place was packed when a friend an I went on a Saturday night, but the wait to get seated was not bad at all. And that's when everything stopped being good. The server took 15 minutes to get us our drinks (we ordered sodas) and the food took another 25 minutes to arrive at our table. We were seated outside under a tent, which had a heater, but somehow the room started to get really cold. Others were pulling on sweaters. I got the Bison burger, but it was so bland it could have been anything. Absolutely no flavor. The chips were okay, but not special. My friend got fries with his meal and told me they were not very good and he ended up not eating half of them. Overall, the place seemed very generic and the food bland. Common sense and good customer service should know to adjust "their rule" to accommodate customers when the place is empty. Asked for wine, they don't even have wine glasses and served wine in a pee cup size plastic cup. Bartender chatting with one person the entire time, not checking in on the other few customers. I frequent this place on football Sunday to watch my Browns. Even when busy, the service here is always really good. The staff are motivated and thrive to do a good job. They are friendly too. They offer a decent enough craft beer selection and seem to feature local brews (a good thing in my mind). I would love to see at least one more IPA on tap, but I can't complain with Lagunitas being available each week. The food here is always just okay to me. I have tried lots of different items here (Appetizers, to gridiron menu items, to sanwiches, to ribs, etc) but not one item has ever wowed me. To their defense, the hotdogs were the only item I ever had that I would consider bad. Now for the other half of the equation. I am highly frustrated with the speakers (at each table) that do not work consistently. I have had to watch many games without sound unless I get there early enough to test various tables before I sit down. Equally as frustrating is displaying a 16:9 HD feed onto a 4:3 screen. It throws off the proportions of everything! Please, set it so that there ARE the black bars at the top and bottom. Displaying a feed in the correct aspect ratio/proportions is much more important than filling the entire screen. With a few tweaks I could see this place earning 5 stars. read more
